The intention of the study was to examine student mentoring, self-description, and academic achievement in a selected private university in Jakarta, Indonesia. There were 150 respondents in the study. The 2 instruments used for collecting data were adopted from Cohen (1995) for identifying the mentoring style of the mentors of the students, and from Marsh (1999) for identifying self-description of the students. The analysis of data employed descriptive statistics (independent t-test) as well as Chisquare, One-way ANOVA, and Two-way ANOVA. The research inquiries focused on the following issues:

AbstractNursing homes aim to provide person-centered care and recognize residents as unique individuals with their own histories, life goals, and preferences. The life expectancy of nursing home residents is rather limited. Nursing homes have been hit hard by COVID-19 because of an increased risk of death and a total nursing home lockdown from March 19 until the end of May 2020. Although social relationships are a basic human need and the fulfillment of social needs is essential for both physical and mental health, nursing home residents were no longer allowed to meet their loved ones. This decision was taken without involving residents and their loved ones and without considering the psychosocial impact of such measures for residents and their loved ones. When visitors were again allowed in the nursing homes, this was valued highly. To enable decent decision-making, we call both the government and nursing homes to involve residents and their families in decision-making. It is essential to know how residents weigh the risk of a COVID-19 infection and the possible implication of them opposing social isolation. We have to adapt to a new common and need to stop talking about residents and their loved ones and start talking with them.

On a balmy day in June 1955, George Anderson took his sailboat out on Lake Washington, the long stretch of fresh water that separates Seattle from its eastern suburbs. Anderson had recently finished his doctoral research on phytoplankton, and knew the lake well. The water that day looked odd; he noticed a strange brown tinge. So he collected a sample in an empty beer bottle and brought it back to the University of Washington lab where he worked with his mentor, W.T. Edmondson, the ranking authority on the lake. Under the microscope, Anderson and Edmondson found a life form they’d never seen before. It grew in long, narrow chains, striated with lines that separated one cell from the next. They thought this might be a species infamous among limnologists, the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria rubescens. (Cyanobacteria, popularly known as blue-green algae, are in fact distinct from and far more ancient than algae. They appeared more than 3 billion years ago, when the planet was inhabited only by microbes, and were the first organisms to evolve photosynthesis. Their proliferation and release of great volumes of oxygen profoundly changed the chemical makeup of Earth’s atmosphere, making the evolution of complex life possible.) The researchers needed to be sure, so they sent a sample off to an expert, who confirmed their suspicions. O. rubescens signaled deteriorating conditions in Lake Washington. To Edmondson, it also meant an unprecedented opportunity to track the impacts of nutrient overload. O. rubescens had been the harbinger of drastic change in a number of western European lakes. The best-known case was that of Lake Zurich in Switzerland. Fed by Alpine glaciers, Lake Zurich was, until the late 1800s, an expanse of blue known for its abundant populations of whitefish and lake trout, which thrive in deep water. The lake is made up of two basins separated by a narrow passage. In the late nineteenth century towns at the edge of the lower basin, the Untersee, abandoned privies for flush toilets, and began to release their raw sewage into the lake.

I feel as though my graduate student experiences “preadapted” me to become involved in long-term ecological research. I already enjoyed collaborative research and instantly felt comfortable in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program when I first had the opportunity to work in it. Working on large, collaborative projects offers a great number of opportunities for students and postdoctoral fellows, but their mentors need to ensure that they develop intellectually independent ideas. Giving students and postdoctoral fellows the long-term collaborative view of science while having them develop as fully independent scientists is a balancing act that I try to always keep in mind. The LTER program has led me into an increased level of communication with the public, students, and local and regional level managers and policy-makers. I have found that at every level people are hungry for scientific information, and my interactions with all of them have been extremely rewarding—although challenging. It has forced me to expand my communication skills and work with others who have the gift of science translation. There are costs and benefits to scientific collaboration that change with the size of the project and with one’s level of involvement in the project. Entraining young scientists is a challenge for large-sized projects, such as those in the LTER program. It was 1975 when I and several other beginning graduate students first walked down a short path through the woods to the Great Sippewissett Marsh in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Ahead of me marched my major professor, Ivan Valiela. As we explored the marsh, Ivan pointed out numerous circular plots staked in the grass. These, it turned out, defined the bounds of his fertilization experiments. The grass within some of the plots was distinctly greener and taller compared to others. Ivan began explaining the marsh fertilization experiment that he had begun 5 years earlier with John Teal. He described how the responses of the marsh seemed to differ with the amount of added fertilizer. The community composition of the vegetation had been changing over time.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the authors describe the essential need of mental health and psychosocial support for people accommodated in mandatory quarantine and isolation facilities during the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in Namibia through a multi-sectoral response. Namibia recorded its first two index cases on 13 March 2020 when a married couple arrived in the Windhoek district in Namibia from Madrid, Spain on 11 March 2020. Namibia has since March 2020 provided supervised quarantine services to 12,128 persons in facilities around the country. The Ministry of Health and Social Services provides mental health and psychosocial support services, which were critical in the short and long-term response to COVID-19 pandemic. Public health measures were developed in line with WHO guidelines to contain the virus. These measures include the need of setting up quarantine and isolation facilities. Recommendations for future research in strengthening mental health and psychosocial support services and coping strategies are provided in the chapter.

This chapter compares and contrasts between the perspectives of the author (G. A. Cohen) and of his mentor, Isaiah Berlin, on the thought of Karl Marx. The discussion is intertwined with the author's personal experiences and impressions of Berlin, as well as the former's own struggles to better understand Marx. For the author, nothing was more fundamental to Marx's motivation than his perception of the misery which the capitalism of his day imposed upon the working class. 1868 should have been the high mark of achievement for Reconstruction, but, in hindsight, it all happened too fast. ‘Resistance, May 1868–March 1869’ describes how between the Reconstruction acts and the re-admission of the first seven Southern states, voter registration was carried-out, the old Confederate power structure dismantled or disabled, state constitutional conventions called and constitutions written, and elections held for both state and federal legislatures, not to mention a presidential election, which was won by the Republican Ulysses S. Grant. With over half a million paroled Confederate veterans, mostly unemployed and smoldering with resentments, large pools of clandestine white resistance easily sprang to life, the most infamous of these being the Ku Klux Klan.
