Wu, Yi-Ping. "Nutrients Analysis of Preschool Lunch Menus in Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43470.

Full text
Abstract:

Child care centers are becoming much more influential in educating and caring for children because more and more families choose supplemental care for their young children in child development programs. In June 1997, Child and Adult Food Program (CACFP) served nearly 2.2 million children and provided meals to 2.6 million children in March 1998. A large number of children eat at least one and sometimes two or more of their meals at child care centers. It is imperative that nutritious and satisfying meals and snacks are served at child care centers. The purpose of this study was to examine menus planned in Head Start Program and Child Day Care Centers in Virginia and to assess if they meet the national Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) standards for vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron.

Lunch menus for 3-5 year old children were collected from 114 CACFP staffs attending a state wide CACFP menu training session. Fifty-seven weekly menus were selected based on geographic representation to analyze vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron levels by a nutritional analysis computer program. Menus were also divided into Head Start Program and Child Day Care Center for further analysis and comparison.

For all 57 sites, the mean values of these lunches exceeded the one-third RDAs for vitamin A, vitamin C, and calcium; the average percentages were 198%, 121% and 134%, respectively. But the average iron level was only 63% RDAs. None of the child care centers met 100% of one-third RDAs for the lunch menus. Because dietary iron levels are consistently low, iron food sources were studied. The results showed no significant (p< 0.05) difference between the Head Start Program and Child Day Care Center.

Based on the findings of this study, following the established meal pattern guidelines for the child nutrition programs did not guarantee adequate iron levels in the planned menus of the child care centers. Some foods with high iron levels should be used more often. Further research is needed for this population in implementing the appropriate dietary guideline. In addition, the menu planing, food purchasing and preparation should be part of the training programs for child care centers.

Because of the ever-changing nature of the economy and the food environment, research as recent as 2010 may not be relevant to today’s discussion on food insecurity, food deserts, obesity rates, and nutritional quality in the U.S. population’s diet. Today, people of low socioeconomic status in the U.S. are at risk for overweight, obesity, and chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers. In this report, I investigate published research about low-income populations in the U.S. relative to the food environment and describe implications for healthcare professionals implementing interventions with these populations, discussed in the following categories: Dietary Intake Quality and Socioeconomic Status; Food Insecurity; Barriers to Quality Food Access in the U.S. Food Environment; Communities Alleviating Food Insecurity; Food-Related Perceptions, Attitudes, and Behaviors; Homelessness and Food-Related Behaviors; Why Do People Buy What They Buy?; Nutrition Assistance Programs and Policies; Current U.S. Food Costs; and Comparing the Nutritional Value Versus Price of Foods. Although the literature on the subject of low-income diet quality is thorough, much of it needs to be updated with current data on food prices, food environments, and U.S. diet quality. For this purpose, I compiled the most recent data from the National Bureau of Labor & Statistics on food prices to discuss the elevated food prices of healthful foods as opposed to less healthful foods. I also created a one-month menu based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Thrifty Food Plan budget allowance in order to follow a healthful diet in this harsh economic climate utilizing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 and the Affordable Nutrients Index.

Full text
Abstract:
Prostate cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States. Because early prostate cancer is frequently without symptoms and data on how to prevent prostate cancer is lacking, early detection has the greatest potential for decreasing mortality. Studies have shown Hispanics/Latinos to be less likely than whites or African-Americans to utilize prostate cancer screening exams. The purpose of this descriptive study was to design a social marketing plan which could be used as a model to promote Hispanic/Latino participation at prostate cancer screenings. Information obtained through medical and marketing literature review, the author's experiences serving on the promotion committee of a community-sponsored prostate cancer screening project, and interviews with 51 Hispanic/Latino prostate cancer screening participants is described and incorporated into a guide with recommendations for future program planners.

Abstract:

This thesis-project aims to research the possibilities of new wireless technologies in general control-situations. We have studied different existing control protocols, and developed a new protocol focusing on textbased menus. Our protocol is scaleable, easy to implement, and platform- and media independent. Since our protocol supports Plug and Play with dynamically allocated id’s, it does not require a unique id in the hardware.

To test the protocol we have developed a prototype system, consisting of a mobile phone connected to a server, which in turn is connected to two slave units, controlling peripheral equipment on 220 Volt.

The phone is an Ericsson T28, equipped with a Bluetooth unit. The server is runningthe real-time OS eCos on an ARM 7TDMI Evaluation Kit, and the slave units consist of two developer boards equipped with PIC-processors. Communication between the phone and the server is done over Bluetooth. However we did not find a working Bluetooth protocol stack ported to eCos, so a serial cable was used instead. Communication between the server and the slaves is done over a RS-485 serial network which simulates the traffic over a radio-network.

The results show that our protocol is working, and that our system would be easy to implement, cheap to produce and very scalable.

Daniels, Nicole Miriam. "The gendered experiences of women, men and couples who plan, have and narrate homebirths." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20024.

Full text
Abstract:
In South Africa excellent scholarship exists on women's experiences of homebirth but no studies have yet examined men's or couples' experiences. The thesis sought to make a valid contribution by uncovering a relational view of homebirths that made sense of the gendered interactions and relational negotiations of women, men and couples who experienced homebirth. It adopted a longitudinal, qualitative approach based on thirty interviews with five couples before and after homebirth. Dyadic interviewing and the listening guide offered relational methods of collecting and analysing data that additionally engaged the researcher in highly reflexive modes of producing knowledge. By foregrounding the relational context, narrative constructions of homebirths showcased simultaneous operations of gender as both opportunity and constraint. This study uncovered the active social processes involved in couples' decision making narratives and the relational interactions in their homebirth experiences. Joint narratives of homebirth displayed the interconnectedness of relating-selves where couples' relational scripts were brought to bear on the meanings of homebirth. Women and men found meaning in their experiences through connection with others; men privileged a selfless masculinity and women a self-reliant femininity. Both positioned women's relationship to their body and thus their baby as central to homebirth. Through in-depth scrutiny of the practice of homebirths, this study detailed how intimate interpersonal relationships are shaped by broader social and gendered processes.

Abstract:
The current study was conducted to determine whether or not electronic gaming is related to the formation of certain body ideals and appraisals of attractiveness. A sample of 219 college-aged males (age 18 to 32) completed a variety of measures designed to gather information about their game play habits, their perceptions of their own attractiveness (MBSRQ, SMAQ), and their perceptions of women's attractiveness (BCRS, FRS, photographs of women of different BMIs). Results indicate that men's ratings of women's attractiveness vary across the genres of games most frequently played but that frequency of play and age of commencement of game play are not related to self-perceptions of physical attractiveness, the association of positive attributes with muscularity, or the drive to become more muscular. However, results suggest that men's appearance satisfaction and the degree to which they value muscularity are influenced by the extent to which they compare their own appearance to that of the characters they play in the games. Results indicate that unlike other forms of media, electronic gaming is not related to decreased appearance satisfaction in players or the formation of unrealistic standards of attractiveness for women.

L'Abbé, Sonnet Lynn. "Green men, plant brains and nervetrees : Ronald Johnson's object-oriented poetics of embodied mind." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44877.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an ecocritical single-author study of the work of the American modernist poet Ronald Johnson (1935-1998), who sustained in his work a career-long inquiry into the relationship of poetry and Nature, and into the limits of representing subjective perception in language. Johnson understood poetry as a process by which "nature looks at itself" that took, as its starting point, the biological embeddedness of the human subject in his or her own environment. The human mind, for Johnson, was the telos of Nature’s evolutionary change and the chief instrument of this looking. When Johnson's Nature, not dualistically differentiated from human subjectivity, “looks at itself” through his poetry, the boundaries of epistemological and identity categories of subject and object become indistinct, a representational challenge that Johnson — who was not at all interested in disrupting, but only discovering his own model for, “the” Natural order — often negotiates through the use of plant tropes and metaphors. The figure of the plant shows up in Johnson's work where the poet, acting as an idealized Western human self, reaches to identify beyond the boundary of species identity, to greenly and leafily represent a kind of alterity that is un-othered by its observer. This dissertation proposes that Johnson's formally innovative poetry, which plays within the genre tradition of nature writing, poses figuratively what philosopher and critical plant studies pioneer Michael Marder argues: that the figure of the plant, which grows "in-between classical metaphysical categories of the thing, the animal, and the human" stands as the potential "prototype of a post-metaphysical being" (“Vegetal” 487) More importantly, Johnson’s work suggests that the mindbody, particularly the human nervous system, as an object-that-knows, confounds Western metaphysics in the same way. Johnson’s “nervetree” figure, I argue, moves us closer to visualizing where the human object, as embodied, ecologically-embedded subjecthood, fits in a post-metaphysical, object-oriented ecological thought.

Shattuck, Debra Ann. "From child's play to molder of men: the gendered narrative of nineteenth-century baseball." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5994.

Full text
Abstract:
Baseball has not always been identified as a man’s game despite the fact that its boosters began proclaiming it a “manly” pastime in antebellum America. This thesis reveals, for the first time, that baseball began as a gender-neutral sport. Countless girls and women across the country played the game in every decade of the nineteenth century that the game existed, organizing the same types of teams that boys and men did. The thesis explains how and why the gender-neutral game become so fiercely gendered as masculine and explains how this characterization persisted despite dramatic changes in gender ideals and roles over time. Close scrutiny of nineteenth-century sources indicates that baseball’s gendered character was neither inevitable nor quickly solidified. For decades journalists, scholars, and ordinary citizens unwittingly perpetuated the gendered narrative—a narrative introduced by men with a personal and financial stake in shaping the game for their own purposes and one accepted and reinforced in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth by female physical educators who organized a structure for girls’ and women’s sport that discouraged elitism and encouraged participation by individuals of all physical characteristics. This thesis traces the evolution of baseball throughout the nineteenth century, focusing on the development of the formal structure of the sport and the cultural “creed” it shaped. To the extent allowed by available primary sources, each chapter highlights the perceptions of female players, particularly as they saw themselves in the context of baseball culture and social ideals of gender.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Each school is obligated to maintain an emergency plan in case of events and situations that could lead to a state of crisis with one or among several individuals at school. There are no directives from the department of work environment or the department of education on how an emergency plan should look like or what topics to be covered. This gives each school the freedom of choice to form the emergency plan in their own manner. I have gathered emergency plans from five elementary schools ranging from preschool to fifth grade and upon critical analysis, great differences was noticed but also some similarities which I will describe in my results. Focus was put into three recurring themes noticed:

  • Death of a pupil
  • Follow up of pupil´s feeling depressed as a result of occurred death
  • Emergency plan topics covered by one individual school only

There is a discussion around how the emergency plans are formed and around the three themes which then are connected with psychological research around children’s emotions when a state of crisis occur and their ability to handle and process a state of crisis.

I also seek indications that children feeling depressed as a result of parents separating are considered in the emergency plan. As no indications where found that this was covered in the emergency plans there is a discussion around children’s specific reactions to a separation within the end discussion. There is also a discussion if children can take part in the creation of the emergency plans at their school on the basis of the children’s convention, third article which points out that the children’s best must be of the highest interest and the twelfth article which points out that the children´s opinion must be considered in situations where they are affected.

Abstract:
After the Cold War ended, the process of nuclear disarmament began to stagnate and in recent years there are signs of backsliding. Efforts to revive the disarmament regime over decades culminated with the drafting and ratification of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2017 and 2021 respectively, much to the dismay of nuclear weapons states. The U.S., Britain, and France have declared their dismissal of the treaty while subscribing to the disarmament regime as established by the Non-proliferation Treaty of 1970.  The Western nuclear powers typically channel their opposition through NATO, and this thesis will first look at NATO’s legal arguments and as the strategy of nuclear deterrence which is fundamental to their defensive strategy. I will then investigate NATO discourse as it pertains to nuclear weapon strategy as a constituent of its subjectivity and intentionality. In other words, what it is like to “be” NATO, and in so doing understand why it acts in opposition to a goal it already pursues.  This is relevant to IR in that it explores an alterative manner in which to understand social structures while adhering to research designs typically ascribes to the “lower” unit of analysis of individuals.

A trama existencial destecida nessa experi?ncia revelou algumas possibilidades e limites da pr?tica do plant?o no contexto estudado.
The present paper discusses the experience of a psychological emergency attendance in Maternidade Escola Janu?rio Cicco (MEJC) in Natal and has as main objective to investigate the limits and possibilities of this practice in offering psychological care to women in abortion situation. The Ministry of Health considers the abortion a serious medical problem in Brazil and acknowledge the repercussions it causes in personal life and between the women?s family, most of all among the younger ones, in fully productive and reproductive age, that if not supported may suffer deep psychological and physical wounds. This research inserts itself in the field of psychological practices in institutions, by many ways, and aim to offer, by different approaches, among then the psychological emergency attendance, a psychological attention at the institutions. This attention refers to a care during the suffering at the time of crisis and in the many ways that the problem is present. The results were analyzed at a heideggerian hermeneutics optics, which search a determined aspect of reality that intends to know/understand, accompanied by the man?s own movement in existence. The cartography and the logbook were chosen in narrative form as a resource to allow the approximation of daily experience. The emergency psychological attendance was realized on curettage setor of MEJC between march of 2013 and february 2014 at tuesdays and Thursdays from 9h to 12h. The existential plot unveiled at this experience showed some possibilities and limits of emergency psychological attendance as studied. Among the possibilities, the emergency attendance helped the women that suffered an abortion to find new meanings, as: realize the need to self-care; see in the attendance a way to cope with the lost or other issues in their life?s; to enlarge the possibilities of her choice; to rethink her sex e reproductive life, and rethink her relationships and life projects. The attendance has proven itself as a health care mechanism showing the women the need to search for the necessary condition to self-care and to question what in that environment was saw as natural. The attendance showed itself as a suitable practice to the health care demand by creating/inventing ways of meet the woman needs. The attendance promoted an opening at the technical horizons of women?s, what was realized when the complaints moved past the physical health. As refered to the limits, some needs was beyond the emergency attendance service and demanded forwarding to regular psychological care or others specialized services. The service was not able to attend all of the demands of the sector. The attendance did not touched the medical staff to its need or made a change in posture to act beyond the technicality. The attendance, although has not made change in this context, was able to show the main difficulties, like the lack on prepare of the medical staff to deal with the abortion past beyond the technical procedure and the precariousness of the infrastructure of the services offered. At last, the attendance represented a shelter to the women in abortion situation, allowing the suffering to have a place.

Abstract:
My aim with the experience-based essay is that I want to explore the implications of mathematics on children's development. I also want to examine my approach in relation to the various mathematical tasks. Why do we think that mathematics is important for pre-school children? What does the research say about how the teacher is thinking about mathematics? Can the teacher combine playing and learning and create meaningful moments and activities related to mathematics? I also want to explore our policies and the objectives that the teacher should relate to. What is required of me as a teacher in order to meet those goals? My essay is about mine and my boss’s view of the mathematical tasks that I usually perform in the preschool. She thinks that they might create a pressure on the children. My reflection on this will help me to understand my mathematical activities in a deeper way. During my research trip I will examine how the teacher can combine mathematics, playing and learning to form pleasurable moments of them. I want to show how the interaction and storytelling can create a link between the teacher and child. My role as an educator is an important part of children’s development, because it is me who opens or restricts the child's ability to grow and learn.

Abstract:
Community colleges are tasked with helping all students regardless of their academic background to receive a degree, certificate, or other form of education. Many of these students need support in learning the mathematical content necessary to take college-level courses. Since a large proportion of students in these developmental classes are students of color, and unlikely to be successful, developmental courses are not leveling the playing field of higher education. In-class computer-centered (ICCC) classes are a possible solution to this social justice issue because they provide students with flexible learning opportunities. Students can work independently on a schedule that matches their needs and can access the multiple learning tools embedded in the software in ways that make the most sense for their own learning. Research on ICCC mathematics courses has primarily compared success rates with those of traditional lecture classes. These quantitative studies provided a limited view of student activity in an ICCC class and did not demonstrate how students were navigating these courses or the nature of their experiences. This study uses a qualitative research design to explore student actions and their experiences relative to their success. In my analysis, I utilized Bandura's construct of agency, defined as the capacity to understand, predict and alter the course of one's life's events (Bandura, 2008). My framework also considers agency as a temporal phenomenon residing in the past, present, and future (Emirbayer & Mische, 1998). Agency is operationalized temporally and by using four characteristics, intention, forethought, reflection, and reaction. This study uses case study research design where students are interviewed and observed in an ICCC class. In it I illustrate the various forms of agency students bring and leverage in the ICCC mathematics classroom in their attempts to be successful. Findings indicate that the students who were successful were most adept at leveraging a variety of resources to help them work towards their goals. There is the assumption that students need flexibility and individualized learning in developmental courses; these needs are addressed by ICCC and are a way in which the ICCC format perfects the traditional lecture. However, this research demonstrates that the question of how to best help developmental students remains open.

Gulliver-Terry, Amy. "How do adult men experience and respond to norms of masculinity and what part (if any) does resistance play in their wellbeing?" Thesis, University of Surrey, 2018. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/849247/.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Research indicates detrimental implications for conforming to masculine norms on psychological well-being, mental health and psychological help seeking in men. However, research predominately focuses on measuring levels of adherence and non-adherence to these norms. This implies a passive process of men’s gender socialisation, which is inconsistent with the social constructivist position which dominates masculinity theory. Less is known about men’s active role in their socialisation and how active resistance to masculine norms might impact well-being. This research explored the question: How do adult men experience and respond to norms of masculinity and what part (if any) does resistance play in their well-being? Method: In depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight White British males between the ages of 25-40 to explore their understanding of societal conceptualisations of masculinity, their own relationship to masculinity, and their experience of resistance to traditional masculinity and implications this may have for their well-being. Results: Five themes emerged from the data: Traditional Masculinity is Understood by All; Relationship with Traditional Masculinity is Not Universally Shared; Societal change creates pressure for change on masculinity; There are costs and benefits to specific masculine norms; and The Gap between the Authentic self and The Masculine Mask. Conclusions: Participants linked Traditional Masculinity (TM) with detrimental impacts for emotional and social well-being. They discussed wanting to resist elements of TM but felt pressure from male peers to conform to TM. Participants discussed this disparity as a gap between their authentic self and outward behaviour when in male dominated environments. Clinical implications include: how restrictive emotionality can be recognised and addressed during interventions; use of humanistic approaches to address self-alienation and increase authentic self-identity; and taking a Positive Psychology Positive Masculinity approach.

Abstract:
One of the principal objectives of equal opportunity plans for women and men is the reduction of gender gaps in accordance with the constitutional mandate of the right to equality and non-discrimination by sex. However, based on an analysis of seventeen regional plans between 2006 and 2010 we came to realize that the majority of such plans do not include elements that ensure their implementation in their design, and are therefore not actually capable of facilitating the reduction of gender gaps at the regional level.

Abstract:
This essay examines how preschool educators view play as an observer and as an active participant with the children. In addition, the essay investigates how intersubjectivity and an authentic playful approach can affect the relationship between child and adult, and how this can have an impact on the child's social development and sense of well-being. The study was carried out with a qualitative method where I interviewed four preschool teachers at a preschool area south of Stockholm. The theoretical starting point of the analysis is the relational perspective that focuses on the interpersonal and subjective in togetherness and interaction with each other. One of several focus areas is to see how the subjective exchange takes place between parties, both emotionally within themselves but also to others, via the "gap". The results show an intranet of relationships and factors that affect an educator's playfulness and how play and relationship between educator and children can be developed and shown. The results from the educator’s perspective indicate that children want and wish for a playful educators to be able to play with in addition to their peers. The winnings will be many for both adults and children. Adults get a more rewarding working day and good relationships and the children as well. In addition, the children get a secure and fun stay at the preschool, which in turn benefits the child's social and academic development.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work was to provide knowledge about how preschool teachers look at play and its importance for children´s motor development. They have shared their thoughts about how play and motor development are related and what preschoolers consider is their role in play and motor development. This has been made possible by using the phenomenological perspectives where man experiences the world through body and mind. Previous research shows that there is clear connection between play and motor development. The survey is based on qualitative interviews, semistructured interviews on four preschools teachers. The result shows that preschool teachers believe there is a clear connection in play and motor development. In the result, it was also found that the preschool teachers play and important role in the play and motor development. Being a present teacher assumes that more people participate and participate, and that there is more even level of play.

Ever since the accident at Three Mile Island, the nuclear power plant industry has begun to place importance on severe nuclear accident evaluation, resulting in the initiation of the development of the Modular Accident Analysis Program (MAAP) by Fauske & Associates for the severe accident analyses. Compared with the previous versions, the latest MAAP 5 provided a variety of improvements on the physical modeling and numerical method. The aim of this thesis was to discuss the differences between the current MAAP code (MAAP 5) and the precious version (MAAP 4.0.4) of the code; in addition, the impact of inclusions of emergency operating procedures (EOP) will be evaluated. The computer base-deck for the MAAP code was based on the established parameter file developed for the Advanced Boiling Water Reactor of Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant. First of all, the previous version, MAAP 4.0.4, was used to analyze the Station Blackout (SBO) and Anticipated Transient Without Scram (ATWS) accident scenarios, and then a new parameter file for MAAP 5 was developed. In addition, the results obtained from MAAP 4.0.4 and those obtained from MAAP 5 were compared. Furthermore, logics related to the operator actions in accordance with the Emergency Operation Procedures (EOP) were included in the analyses to determine the impact of these actions on the progression of the accident scenario. Observed from the simulated results, the results obtained from MAAP 5 were similar to those obtained from MAAP 4.0.4, except for some modeling differences. Their differences were resulted from the software models and parameter settings. In addition, the study will discuss these differences between the modeling and the initial values used in MAAP 5 and MAAP 4.0.4 such as hydrogen generation, water mass in condensate storage tank, and the time of RPV failure. Since MAAP 5 has numerous enhancements by improving calculation models, the new features improved by MAAP 5 were also discussed. Finally, by implementing the EOP, the MAAP simulated results for the severe accidents under consideration indicated that the degrees of degradation of the nuclear power plant as a result of the SBO and ATWS were highly mitigated, leading to the avoidance of core melt and the resulting release of fission products.

Abstract:
We have investigated the feasibility of using digital tabletop displays during design team meetings to improve access to design information. To achieve this goal, we have applied various design guidelines for tabletop interface design and requirements for digital meeting scenarios in order to implement design ideas (in a prototype named Mozaic) that specifically cater to design team meetings. Mozaic intends to improve information retrieval and browsing activities during meetings thereby improving information access through a tile based layout, pop-up menu control and filtered list. We have evaluated the features of Mozaic through an exploratory study on a tabletop display (in comparison to a commonly used desktop software tool, which was also used on the tabletop) to evaluate various design ideas and ferret out design ideas for future iterations of Mozaic. We present the result of this study as observations and user feedback and discuss them in the light of interface development for design meeting situations.

Due to contemporary fascination with virtual games, the seminal concept of the playing person (homo ludens) − as articulated by Huizinga – has regained prominence. Nel (2014; 2015a; 2015b), Burger (2013), Viljoen (2011; 2013), Anker (2011) and Barnes (2014) observe a preoccupation with ludics in the narrative structure of various Afrikaans literary texts. This report focuses on three critical developmental stages of play: pre-Huizinga, Huizinga and post-Huizinga. Classic hypotheses by Heraclitus and Plato that manifested in Huizinga's (1949; 1950) notions on the play-element in culture as well as revisionist ideas by Caillois (1961) will be utilised as theoretical framework for an exploration of the ludic discourse in Klimtol (Van Heerden 2013), Afstande (Sleigh 2010) and Sirkusboere (Loots 2011). The description and interpretation of various play markers signify that not only the narrative structure of the novels, but the novels themselves, might be regarded as ludic play that shapes culture.

Since the “Three Mile Island Accident” happened, the safety of nuclear power plants was in doubt. Therefore, a number of simulated softwares were developed to simulate and analyze severe accidents resulting from nuclear power plants. By those softwares, operators can simulate the accidents and evalute the severity resulting from the postuated severe accidents. In this study, the program MAAP5 which was developed by Fauske and Associates was used in analyzing postulated accidents of Lung-Men Nuclear Power Plant (LMNPP). The case being analyzed followed Final Safety Analysis Report, (FSAR of LMNPP), and simulated a number of accident scenarios. Afterward, the Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) were included in the cases. Simulated operator actions followed EOPs, intended to lead the nuclear power plant accident into safe and stable situation. In Chapter 6 of this study, EOPs were included in the stimulated cases in order to determine the effect of injection at various core water level for the ATWS scenarios on the progressions of the postulated severe accidents. The result showed that, in ATWS, the operators had to control the water level carefully to avoid the high water level in the core region, causing high power level. In Chapter 7, with the cases including EOPs, the injection of AC-Independent Water Addition (ACIWA) or the so-called firewater system was delayed for 10 min and 20 min to determine the impact of injection delay on the developments of the postulated severe accidents. The results showed that, even though the operator actions could guide the nuclear power plant accidents into safe and stable situation, the accidents would lead to more severe actions if the operator delay injection of water beyond the critical value of 10 min.

After the Three Mile Island accident in the United States in1979, the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986, and Fukushima nuclear accidents in Japan in 2011, people worried about and paid attention to the safety of the nuclear power plants. Institutes of nuclear research do more thorough researches in nuclear power plants, and develop many nuclear safety analysis softwares. This study used MAAP software which was developed by FAI to analyze Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) at Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant. The cases being analyzed were station blackout (SBO) cases with the effects on radiation doses. There are two parts in the case studies: Chapter 5 is the study on the SBRC-PF-R-N documented in Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR), and Chpter 6 is the study on severe accident station blackout case with Emergency Operation Procedures (EOPs). In addition, the effects of AC-Independent Water Addition (ACIWA) injections on the releases of radiation dose were also performed.

Due to the fact that NPP (Nuclear power plant) is more and more important in a national security after the disaster at Fukushima Nuclear Power plant, the level of security of NPP is higher than the usual factories or other kinds of power plants. Except the risk of nuclear reactor, the most dangerous problem of NPP is cause by fire. Because that the major source of fire is the electrical cable and because no matter what we use to transport electric power or digital signals, we must have to use cable. Especially in the control room, there are a lot of switches and cables to control the nuclear reactor or other equipments to make sure that all situations will be under proper control. The FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) software was used in this study to simulate the situation. The FDS was developed by NIST (Nation Institute of Standards and Technology) to simulate the short circuit problem leading to fire at the main control room. In addition, the properties of the shielding of cable was specified in accordance with the data obtain from the hand book published by Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to determine out the concentration of burning of the shielding materials resulting in smokes like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, together with the temperature profile of the main control room.

In the 1970s, because of the increased demand for the electricity, the nuclear plants were popular and were built extensively. But after the Three Mile Island Accident in the United States in 1979, the Chernobyl Accident in Ukraine in 1986, and Fukushima Accident in Japan in 2011, nuclear power industries have been hard hit by these accidents, and people were beginning to lose faith for the safety of the nuclear power plants. Over the years since the TMI accident, to improve the safety of nuclear plants, the nuclear industry and the research institutions have carried out researches in the safety issues associated with the nuclear plants and have developed a number of nuclear safety analytical codes. This study used the MAAP 5 (Modular Accident Analysis Program) code, developed by Fauske & Associates, Inc. (FAI), MACCS 2 (MELCOR Accident Consequence. Code System) code and MELCOR 1.8.5 (Methods for Estimation of Leakages and Consequences of Releases) code, developed by Sandia National Laboratories, to analyze postulated accidents at the Lung-Men Nuclear Power Plant. The cases being analyzed were loss of coolant accident (LOCA) with Emergency Operation Procedures (EOPs) and controlled AC-Independent Water Addition (ACIWA) to explore each stage of phenomena and find the impact on the dose being released. From the analysis of the results obtained from the case studies, it was found that modeling of the behavior of the core when the core becomes molten in MELOCR was more rigorous. The bottom of the reactor vessel was calculated to be failed by penetration through the in-core monitoring instrument tube or control rod drive guide tubes at first, followed by the failure by creep rupture. In addition, after relocation of the core materials to migrate to the lower part of the reactor vessel and after the reactor failure, part of the core materials were modeled by the MELCOR to be still remained in the core region, which is consistent with the physical phenomena. Delayed injection of the fire water (at the volumetric flow rate of 950 gpm), (1) the core remained intact if time of delay for 94 sec and 100 sec, obtained from MAAP and MELCOR evaluations, respectively, (2) the core melted for delays of 14.25 min and 4.78 min, and (3) the reactor failed by creep rupture through for delays of 6.25 hr and 5.56 hr.

Chipunza, Linda Lorraine Cecilia. "What men say, how women say : an exploration of the interactional mechanisms at play in management meetings." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1994.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how men and women as co-interactants in management meetings use various interactional mechanisms to play out their roles and identities, as they position their ideas in a particular way for intended meaning and effect. The study aims to demonstrate how a particular approach to the examination of naturalistic data, gathered through the use of a case study design, based on recordings and supported by a number of ethnographic strategies can, when examined and informed by conversation analysis, pragmatics and more indirectly critical discourse analysis, generate further insights into the semantic and pragmatic meanings of utterances. The study focuses on four companies in postcolonial Zimbabwe, where the entry of women into senior management positions has changed the complexion of most organisations, but men continue to be the fundamental power brokers in the corporate workplace, which remains a site of social struggle where language, power and gender are important variables. This study finds that while perceptions of power may not vary significantly between men and women, how they use language to play out this power in meetings is of significance. The study suggests that gender-linked communication styles are reflected in management of talk in areas of influence, such as the corporate boardroom. It also shows that men and women, irrespective of their levels of position power or perceived power, present themselves in meetings in different ways, possibly due to gender-role socialisation processes. Apart from generating some new insights regarding theory and research methodology, and describing and interpreting male-female interaction in an under-researched domain (management meetings in a Zimbabwean corporate setting at a time of major socio-economic transformation), it is hoped that this study will also be of value at an applicational level: serving for instance to support applied linguistic goals such as the development of Language for Specific Purposes courses; and conscientising corporate citizens, in particular, to be more accommodating about, and appreciative of differences in communication styles that may be gender-based.
