No fim do século XIX, o Simbolismo estabeleceu-se no campo literário francês e, para garantir a difusão de suas obras, seus representantes fundaram as petites revues. Nas páginas dessas publicações, não figuraram apenas as contribuições de autores franceses, mas, também, de outras nacionalidades. O Mercure de France, cuja série moderne data de 1890, foi uma petite revue que circulou em Paris e aportou em outros locais, a exemplo do Brasil. Neste artigo, discutiremos a chegada do Mercure entre nossos escritores e redações de periódicos, bem como discorreremos sobre as rubricas “Lettres Portugaises” e “Lettres Brésiliennes”. Ademais, consideraremos a representatividade de Xavier de Carvalho, Philéas Lebesgue, Figueiredo Pimentel e dos jornais O Paiz e Gazeta de Notícias nesse diálogo entre França e Brasil.

Abstract The aim of this article is to describe the beginnings of the cooperation between Hanuš Jelínek and the journal and publishing house Mercure de France. In March 1900, Jelínek published, under the pseudonym Jean Otokar, his first study ‘La Poésie moderne tchèque’ in the Parisian journal. For some time, the critic then wrote the column ‘Lettres tchèques’ (August 1900 – February 1903) in Mercure – after Alexandr Bačkovský (alias Jean Rowalski) and before William Ritter. The early origin of the ‘Lettres tchèques’ of Bačkovský and Jelínek as a result of the aesthetic affinity between literary and artistic modernism on the one hand and some French and Francophone circles of the time on the other has the merit of introducing the readers of an important French periodical to Czech production. These columns have their firm place in the history of Czech efforts to gain recognition in France and the French-speaking world.

AbstractIn the foreword to the Mercure de France edition of de Staël. (1996 [1793]. Réflexions sur le procès de la reine. Paris: Mercure de France), Chantal Thomas, French historian and writer, writes that this apology in favor of Marie-Antoinette did not help the queen nor the author herself; on the contrary it only made the latter more unpopular. So why did Germaine de Staël write it? Mme de Staël and Marie-Antoinette did not share many interests; however, at the moment of The Women’s March on Versailles in October 1789, the situation had changed. It was at this moment, when Mme de Staël witnessed people’s hatred for the Queen, that she for the first time felt that she was on her side. She had the feeling that the Queen would be a victim to a public opinion that had been “manipulated” (Thomas. 1996. Preface. In Réflexions sur le procès de la reine, 7–14. Paris: Mercure de France: 12) in a systematic way, and to which she herself had been a victim. Pursuing some ideas formulated by Reddy (2000, 2001) and (Nussbaum, Martha C. 2001. Upheavals of thought: The intelligence of emotions. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.) in their work on emotion and empathy in history and philosophy respectively, I hope to offer some suggestions, with the aid of cultural semiotics. More specifically I hope to be able to provide some answers to the question whether Mme de Staël’s apology might be regarded as an act of compassion.

O fin-de-siècle francês caracterizou-se pelo surgimento de diferentes propostas na literatura e nas artes. Em meio a diferentes ismos e às diversas modificações sociais e estruturais, periódicos franceses serviram não apenas como ferramenta de divulgação de informação, mas, também, de matéria literária e artística. Assim, nasceram as petites revues, publicações que rivalizavam com a grande presse e que contaram com colaboradores tais como Remy de Gourmont e Henri de Régnier, entre tantos outros. No Mercure de France, também uma petite revue, Rachilde, uma femme de lettres, destacou-se e alcançou sucesso. Pseudônimo de Marguerite Eymery, Rachilde foi a responsável pela rubrica “Les Romans”, que trazia ao público as resenhas dos romances publicados nos últimos anos da década de 1890. Neste artigo, propomos a apresentação e análise da trajetória de Rachilde como romancista e participante do grupo do Mercure, sua inserção no campo literário, a relação com outras escritoras de sua época e com Émile Zola, além de sua reflexão sobre o processo de escrita da literatura.

Визит Петра I во Францию (21 апреля — 24 июня 1717 г.) — важное событие в истории русско-французских культурных и дипломатических связей. Пребывание в Париже оставило яркий след в биографии знаменитого русского монарха, дало заметный толчок развитию петровской темы во французской литературе и общественной мысли. Европейская франкоязычная пресса уделила серьезное внимание путешествию царя. Газетные сообщения наряду с официальным журналом путешествия и мемуарными свидетельствами являются ценным источником, позволяющим реконструировать основные события визита, а также его восприятие в европейском обществе, в первую очередь — во французском. В основу статьи положены материалы четырёх франкоязычных газет. Две из них — «Gazette de France» и «Le Nouveau Mercure» — выходили в Париже, «Relations Veritables» издавалась в Брюсселе, а «Gazette d’Amsterdam» — в Голландии.

À peine 400 exemplaires sont vendus. Craignant que le livre soit soldé, Bloy tente de récupérer quelques exemplaires. Finalement le bouillon est racheté par Alfred Vallette qui fait recouvrir les exemplaires de la couverture jaune du Mercure de France avec le millésime 1908 et remplacer le troisième feuillet du premier cahier qui comprend le titre, en gardant ainsi la justification au bas de laquelle par contrat tous les exemplaires sont signés par Bloy en 1898.

Abstract:
In 1704, Abraham Gugger of Augsburg published a ‘Dance of Death’, whose lengthy German title is best abbreviated as Sterb-Spiegel. Only five acknowledged copies exist. Originally the work of brothers Rudolph Theodor and Conrad Meyer of Zürich, the first iteration of the Sterb-Spiegel had appeared in 1650. The posthumous 1704 version, re-engraved by an unknown artist, differs in one essential regard: the clothing of Death's victims has been modernized to represent the fashions of the beginning of the eighteenth century. The illustrations show that death comes to everyone, represented by the different victims at work, home and play in appropriate settings. The Sterb-Spiegel thus depicts the clothing in context and in ‘action’, and further represents all levels of early eighteenth-century society, divided into the ‘Ruling Class’, and the ‘General Home and Worldly Positions’. All are appropriately attired, and the Sterb-Spiegel accurately portrays non-elite garb and accessories. The Mercure Galant had ceased issuing regular fashion plates in the 1680s, and the Mercure de France resumed consistent publication of current styles only in the 1720s; the Sterb-Spiegel, even though it was not the original intention, provides contemporary insights into early eighteenth-century fashions when documentation is relatively sparse.

The article is devoted to the acquaintance of French critics with the philosophy of Lev Shestov, who emigrated from Russia in 1919. Shestov’s ideas almost im­mediately resonate with French readers and over the course of several years the philosopher gains some fame; he is perceived as one of the most important fig­ures of modern original Russian thought, comparable in importance to M. de Un­amuno in Spain and J. de Gaultier in France. Shestov makes acquaintances with French and European intellectuals (J. Rivière, J. de Gaultier, L. Levy-Bruhl and others), collaborates with reputable French magazines “Mercure de France”, “La Nouvelle Revue française”, “La Revue philosophique de la France et de l’étranger”. Shestov has disciples and followers: B. de Schloezer, G. Bataille, B. Fondane, R. Bespaloff, A. Lazarev etc. The most important for his followers is the philosopher’s appeal to the personalities of thinkers and writers, and not to their ideas; “peregrination through the souls” as a philosophical method; the inextricable link between philosophy and life; criticism to reason and mora­lity; religious orientation and others. Shestov’s ideas become one of the sources of existentialism of A. Camus, works of A. Malraux and G. Marcel. Shestov and Fondane separate the philosophy of tragedy, identified with religious existential philosophy in the spirit of S. Kierkegaard, B. Pascal, F.M. Dostoevsky and M. Luther, from the existentialism of M. Heidegger, K. Jaspers and others.

AbstractIn 1677, Georges Pierre des Clozets visited Robert Boyle and told him that he had been approved for membership in the Asterism, a secret international society of alchemical masters, headed by Pierre's patron Georges du Mesnillet, the Patriarch of Antioch. Extensive correspondence followed, replete with gifts and bizarre claims, until Pierre vanished in August 1678. This paper links several new documents—articles in the Mercure galant and the Gazette de France and a manuscript account by another convinced admirer of Pierre—to my previous study of him, particularly in regard to Pierre's claim to be working with the Patriarch to reunite Eastern and Western Churches. Dating from before and after Boyle's involvement, these sources add fresh details about Pierre and his other contacts, and show the consistency of Pierre's stories and the credibility he fashioned as he travelled around Europe convincing people of his claims alchemical and otherwise.

The article reveals literary (Emile Zola’s novel “L’Œuvre”, Richard Muther’s work “History of Painting in the 19th Century”), literary and artistic (magazines “Mercure de France”, “L’Ermitage”, “La Revue Blanche”, “La Plume”) and artistic (exhibits of the French art exhibition of 1896) sources of Konstantin Somov’s acquaintance with the art of French impressionism at the beginning of his independent activity (before leaving for Paris in the late 1890s). There are also identified sources of phenomena in his work that are similar to impressionism only externally. These issues become the subject of special consideration for the first time. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that it first reveals that the artist did not address to impressionism in the period before his departure to France, as it has been long believed. To study the tasks set, the article involves sources of personal origin (letters and diaries of K.A. Somov and his friend A.N. Benois), as well as A.N. Benois’s articles of the 1890s, published on the pages of the magazine “World of Art”. The author comes to the conclusion that K.A. Somov did not turn to the artistic method of the impressionists in his work at that time, since the information he had been able to get from the identified sources was of a verbal and theoretical nature. Black-and-white reproductions of impressionist paintings in literary and art magazines and in Muther’s “History of Painting in the 19th Century” had not provided sufficient information for the artist. The phenomena similar to impressionism in Somov’s works are based on the study of nature, the heritage of the old European artists, the art of the Barbizonians, J.-F. Millet, W. Turner.

Le premier, de Pietro Citati, intitulé La mort du papillon (Paris, Gallimard, coll. « L’arpenteur », 2007 [2006]), est un essai biographique « classique » qui évoque, en quatorze brefs chapitres, les multiples facettes d’une relation nourricière et destructrice ; le second, Alabama Song de Gilles Leroy (Paris, Mercure de France, 2007, Prix Goncourt) redonne la parole à Zelda, dans une sorte de réhabilitation de cette figure à la fois fantasque et énigmatique. Si l’entreprise biographique relève indéniablement d’un souci éthique, où il s’agit de construire la vérité de l’autre en respectant tout un jeu de contraintes factuelles, la reconstitution imaginaire est-elle tenue aux mêmes exigences ? Quels sont les procédés formels, énonciatifs ou narratifs qui autorisent à la fois la représentation du réel et l’enjeu d’écriture ? Издатель большинства этих журналов Пьер Франсуа Фош выполнял политические поручения роялистов, имел прочные связи с русским книжным рынком, неоднократно посещал Россию. Сами сотрудники были хорошо осведомлены о русских делах, некоторые из них жили в Петербурге. Журналы имели и русских корреспондентов. Редактор Le Spectateur du Nord Амабль де Бодюс привлек к сотрудничеству Н.М. Abstract:
Why did the French show so little enthusiasm for emigration to their early modern colonies, compared to other European peoples? In 2006, historian Yves Landry proposed that the image of America communicated to the French reading public by print media might have played a role in this phenomenon. This article examines this question by showing how America in general, and French colonies in particular, were represented in the Ancien Régime's three most prominent periodicals: the weekly news Gazette, the literary Mercure de France and the learned Journal des Savants. Through a combination of distant reading methods, the article builds a three-layered portrait of the New World as displayed to French readers. The first layer, made up of references to America in theater, games and other cultural artefacts built upon common knowledge, shows an unchanging, alien land filled with riches and glory for the few, mortal threats for the many, and the best, perhaps, set aside for foreigners. A second layer, made up of the periodicals' coverage of the slow production of knowledge through science and exploration, edulcorates this picture to some extent by showing that the New World is in the process of being domesticated, but that this process is very much still in its infancy. Finally, the top layer, represented by the Gazette's news coverage, shows a French colonial world that is dominated by Britain, virtually invisible in peacetime, and fraught with chaos at every moment. This top layer is especially important since it was the only one visible to the majority of readers, as the Gazette reached an audience perhaps ten times larger than the other periodicals. Therefore, the article largely supports the original hypothesis.

With the considerable attention paid to Russian-French cultural ties, the topic of the French reception of the Silver Age literature still remains poorly studied. In this paper, we consider three review articles that rarely come to researchers’ attention. These are texts written by Russian authors in French for French magazines: “Letter on Russian Literature” by V.Ya. Bryusov (“Le Beffroi”, 1905), “Notes on Russian Literature of Our Time” by Z.N. Gippius (“Mercure de France”, 1908), and “Russian poets” Ya.M. Povolotsky (“La Grande Revue”, 1911). All the cases are not a part of regular cooperation with the French press, but individual performances aspiring to convey the authors’ vision of the modern literary process in Russia to a foreign audience. All the authors, under the guise of objective reviews, seek to acquaint readers with the literature of symbolism. The ideas presented in Bryusov’s and Gippius’s texts are very similar to those found in their numerous Russian articles and notes, but their assessments of “realist” writers turn out to be less harsh than on the pages of Russian magazines. Nevertheless, for both critics, the appeal to M. Gorky and L. Andreev is only a pretext for introducing symbolist writers. Unlike Bryusov and Gippius, Yakov Povolotsky in his article on Russian poets turns out to be not so much the creator of a concept of his own, but a systematizer. His system is based on already existing views. He identifies three groups of poets and describes the “masters” in meticulous detail. Some assessments made in the given articles seem obvious today, but it should be noted that all the authors assume that the French public knows nothing about Russian non-realistic literature.

Ya en 1909 hace ofrecimientos sin suerte al periódico y editorial Mercure de France, y, en diciembre de 1912, recibe —con solo un día de diferencia— tanto el rechazo de Fasquelle como el de la Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF). En busca de editor, Proust intenta, a través de amigos e intermediarios, publicar en el sello Ollendorf que, dirigido por Alfred Humblot, desestima también la propuesta en febrero de 1913. Finalmente, por consejo de su amigo Gaston Calmette —quien trabajaba en Le Figaro, periódico varias veces mencionado en su ciclo novelesco—, Proust se contacta con la pequeña editorial Grasset donde logra editar su obra (Peter, 2008, pp. 76-77) en 1913 “à compte d’auteur”. Cet article souligne le rôle Jean-Baptiste Beurard dans l’histoire de la paléoichtyologie. Ancien chanoine de la cathédrale de Toul, il trouva après les affres des débuts de la Révolution un emploi d’agent du gouvernement attaché à l’administration des mines entre 1794 et 1815. Chargé de la surveillance des mines de mercure dans les nouveaux départements annexés par la France sur la rive gauche du Rhin, il redécouvrit en juillet 1799 le fameux gisement d’« ichtyolites » (poissons fossiles) imprégnés de cinabre de Münsterappel daté du Permien inférieur. Il envoya plusieurs spécimens dans des collections institutionnelles parisiennes. Des représentants de l’espèce Paramblypterus duvernoy (Agassiz, 1833) (Actinopterygii, Amblypteridae), probablement envoyés par Beurard avant 1809 d’après le témoignage de Barthélémy Faujas de Saint-Fond, ont été identifiés dans les collections du Muséum national d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Un autre spécimen ayant appartenu de manière incontestable à Beurard est conservé dans les collections Géosciences de Sorbonne Université et revêt un intérêt historique tout particulier. Beurard possédait également dans sa collection deux échantillons de poissons fossiles du Cénomanien de Haqel dans l’actuel Liban, qu’il avait reçu de son neveu Claude Charles Harmand (1784–1847), officier de marine, en 1817. À partir d’eux, Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville décrivit deux espèces qu’il nomma Clupea beurardi Blainville, 1818a et Clupea brevissima Blainville, 1818a. La première n’est plus considérée comme valide et la seconde est aujourd’hui assignée au genre Armigatus Grande, 1982 (Actinopterygii, Clupeomorpha) dont elle est l’espèce type. Un de ces spécimens est conservé au Natural History Museum, Londres, et provient de la collection de William Willoughby Cole (1807–1886), comte d’Enniskillen, qui avait acquis une partie de la collection Beurard. Étiqueté par erreur Clupea beurardi par Beurard, cet échantillon porte en réalité les quatre syntypes d’Armigatus brevissimus. Un lectotype est désigné ici pour fixer le statut de cette espèce, certainement la plus abondante et la plus iconique du gisement de Haqel.

The mercury resistance gene merA has often been found together with antibiotic resistance genes in human commensal Escherichia coli. To study this further, we analysed mercury resistance in collections of strains from various populations with different levels of mercury exposure and various levels of antibiotic resistance. The first population lived in France and had no known mercury exposure. The second lived in French Guyana and included a group of Wayampi Amerindians with a known high exposure to mercury. Carriage rates of mercury resistance were assessed by measuring the MIC and by detecting the merA gene. Mercury-resistant E. coli was found significantly more frequently in the populations that had the highest carriage rates of antibiotic-resistant E. coli and in parallel antibiotic resistance was higher in the population living in an environment with a high exposure to mercury, suggesting a possible co-selection. Exposure to mercury might be a specific driving force for the acquisition and maintenance of mobile antibiotic resistance gene carriage in the absence of antibiotic selective pressure.
