How do we decide what meat is acceptable to eat? In this philosophical short story fiction, a crew of over a 100 are onboard a ship, and slowly starving. The captain is worried they might all starve before finding their way to shoreline. They try fishing off the side of the boat, the but seas are uncharacteristically empty, that is, until they net a mermaid. As the unconscious mermaid hangs upside down the cook, the captain, and key members of the crew try to decide what to do with her, or “it” as the captain prefer they call her. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, British and American naval records show a great number of women on board. They travelled as mistresses of sailors or were officially signed as wives of ship captains and officials. Some even acquired fame by serving in the Royal Navy. But they had to resort to disguise and secrecy for the success of their ventures. Also, there were pirate queens and light-house keepers; and tales of sightings of mythical ‘sirens’ and mermaids were not unknown in the history of seafaring. .However, despite a huge treasure trove of testimonies of female adven

The New York Hippodrome theatre brought together many different types of performance on its massive stage. Its opening production in 1905, for instance, included circus acts, a ballet, and a fictionalized Civil War battle (Fig. 1). Many of the acts focused on a key feature in the theatrical environment, a water tank beneath the apron of the stage that could be filled to a fourteen-foot depth. High divers plunged into the tank; in shows with an “ice ballet,” its water was frozen into a skating rink; for a production of HMS Pinafore, a replica ship floated in its water with Brooklyn Navy Yard sa

Council Directives 92/29 and 93/103 establish the “use of long distance medical consultation” for the protection of the safety and health of maritime workers and distant or isolated populations of the EU. In response to these needs, MERMAID will set up an integrated 24-hour multilingual, telematic, around-theworld, medical emergency service that will transfer medical expertise via satellite and ground based ISDN networks when and where necessary. Since, (a) voice medical teleconsultation is obsolete, (b) videotele-phony has introduced “face-toface” medic

MERMAID is a project that intends to provide multilingual medical emergency services to seaborne vessels around the world. MERMAID uses two-way transmission of live images in marine medical teleconsultation, greatly improving services that up to now depended on short-wave and VHF radio alone. Transmission of high resolution still pictures is also possible, so that the teleconsulting physician may closely (visually) examine his patient, along with transmission of biological signals and patient anamnesis details. Abstract Literary relationships are in some respects like family relation ships, as Ben Jonson and John Dryden were each acutely aware. The notion of a poetic lineage was of particular and absorbing interest to both men, and it seems natural therefore to ask about the kind of relationship, the family tie, that may subsist between them. There are fortuitous but significant similarities in the shape of the two writers’ careers. Both Jonson and Dryden attended Westminster School, and retained from their schooldays a lifelong interest in classical transla tion, imitation, and precedent. Both were

A WDPS (wave devouring propulsion system) is a device that generates thrust directly from wave power and, at the same time, generates large damping forces. This phenomena is same as the thrust generation by the oscillating hydrofoil which are commonly used as the animal propulsion system such as the sea mammals or birds or fish propulsion. Relative flow acting on the hydrofoil generates thrust and damping force respectively. It is quite simple and consists of hydrofoils positioned in front of the bow. If the WDPS is installed in a ship hull, it can drive the hull (even against waves). One exam
