Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the motivations and justifications behind the British attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir in Algeria during the Second World War. The July 1940 operation contravened the accepted use of military violence in war and displayed a ruthlessness seemingly at odds with Britain’s status as a liberal democratic pillar of the international community. The strategic use of violence was central to the planning and execution of the attack. The British government justified it by invoking notions of a supreme emergency and the wider moral imperatives of defeating Nazism.
