Abstract:
Tomato is a highly cultivated vegetable in Tanzania. The intensive tomato cultivation and production in Tanzania has resulted in high pests and diseases build-up. A survey to identify and quantify entomofauna diversity in different seasons and pest management practices in Meru District was conducted. In addition, a laboratory experiment was done to assess the effectiveness of commonly used pesticides SnowBecco (Thiamethoxam)and Belt (Flubendiamide) against two dominating insect pests, white flies (Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius, 1889)) and leaf miner (Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917)), respectively. The results obtained revealed that, tomato fields in Meru District had significantly higher entomofauna build up during dry season than the rainy season (U0.05 (df, 24)= 45, p = 0.0441). More than 70% of all collected entomofauna were dominated by the whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) and tomato leaf miners (Tuta absoluta) belonging to orders Hemiptera and Lepidoptera, respectively. It was also observed that, the common pesticides management practices were the use of pesticidal cocktail, broad spectrum insecticides, use of botanical pesticides, frequent application of pesticide and insecticides over dosage. Moreover, yield reduction due to whiteflies and tomato leaf miners infestation were observed in terms of reduced fruits number per plant (38 and 18.4%), fruit size (22.4 and 14.2%), and fruits weight per plant by 43.6 and 26.2%, for Bemisia tabaci and Tuta absoluta, respectively. The study showed that the recommended doses in both tested insecticides caused significant pest mortality (F0.05 (df, 19) = 4.367, p = 0.0199) and (F0.05(df, 19) = 4.761, p = 0.0147) for B. tabaci and T. absoluta, respectively, within a specified period of time. The results suggest that high insect pest infestations could be caused by factors other than development of insecticidal tolerance including inappropriate identification of insect pests due to lack of training, and inappropriate selection and application of insecticides. Consequently, frequent application of broad spectra insecticides not only increases production expenses but also disrupts agroecosystem by killing beneficial entomofauna and disrupting soil organisms that are susceptible to insecticide toxicity.

Gibbon, Hugh. "Using remote sensing techniques for rural development planning in Kenya : a study in Meru District." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1987. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/29107/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis sets out to examine the utility of remote sensing techniques in helping to define recommendation domains relatively homogeneous agricultural areas - to act as foci for agricultural development planning in lower Meru, Kenya. Recommendation domains are used in farming systems research (FSR) for agricultural research and development initiatives enabling greater participation from rural producers within the development process. Recommendation domains are defined by agricultural potential (agro-ecological zones) and farming systems (agro-economic groupings). A multilevel approach incorporating Landsat MSS data, 1:50,000 stereo panchromatic air photography, large scale aerial colour slide photography and ground surveys is used to collect data on the farming systems of the study area. Relatively homogeneous farming patterns are identified and mapped using a number of different computer software packages. These patterns are related to previously identified zones of agricultural potential (agro-ecological zones) to define recommendation domains for new agricultural development initiatives in the area. Several domains are identified for specific attention. Recommendations are made which are relevant to both national and district level agricultural planning in Kenya. It is suggested that future development programmes should focus on areas undergoing population movement and cultivation change since without careful planning these changes are likely to detrimentally affect the local farming systems and natural environment.

Brown, Katrina. "Women's farming groups in a semi-arid region of Kenya : a case study of Tharaka Division, Meru District." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1990. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/27678/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines how far women's farming groups are able to foster self-reliance among peasant farmers in Tharaka Division, a semi-arid region of Kenya. This is a particularly impoverished, drought prone part of the country where population pressure is resulting in intensified land use. In the past development policies have increased the vulnerability of peasant farmers making local people increasingly dependent on cash cropping and off-farm sources of income. Many households are headed by women, and the majority of farms are managed by women. Three aspects of women's farming groups were investigated: participation; extension and innovation; and access to development resources. A comparison is made between the economic and social status of participants and non-participants in women's farming groups. If it is the case that poor women are excluded from these groups, then a policy of targeting agricultural services and inputs to women's groups actually discriminates against resource-poor farmers. The study compares the number of extension visits received and innovations adopted by participants and non-participants. It questions whether the dissemination of information takes place through groups, and whether or not groups facilitate innovation. It examines the distribution of services and inputs to groups by government and non-government development agencies, and identifies those factors determining which groups receive assistance. The study concludes that women's farming groups have the potential to foster self-reliance amongst peasant farmers. However at present poorer women do not join groups because of severe time constraints created by competing labour demands. Any policy supporting women's farming groups can only be consistent with a "people-centred", participatory approach to development when these constraints are overcome and poor women, particularly female heads of households, are able to participate. Present policy is biased in favour of groups from more fertile areas. It is necessary to formulate policy appropriate to dryland areas where women's farming groups may provide a valuable mechanism for reducing vulnerability and ameliorating the effects of drought and famine.

Abstract:

A cross- sectional descriptive study using a self-administered close-ended questionnaire was conducted with pupils in standards four to seven (aged 10 &ndash
17 years) in ten government primary schools in Meru District. The sample of 400 school pupils was obtained by a simple random sampling technique. Data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences SPSS (version 15) computer software and the results were presented in frequencies using simple percentages, tables and graphs. The Chi-square test was used to assess the significance where a p-value of <
0.05 was considered statistically significant. In conclusion, Primary school pupils in Meru district engage in several risky sexual behaviors including substance use, sexual coercion, early sexual debut and engaging in various sexual practices. This calls for a more comprehensive approach in the fight against HIV among primary school children in Tanzania, which could include life skill training at an early age, behaviour change communication interventions, advocacy activities to influence policy formulation, condom promotion and incorporating key stakeholders in the rollout of school based HIV programmes such as parents, community leaders and faith-based organizations leaders.

Abstract:
Background: Obesity is an international health problem. Early intervention of child care is important and can avoid and prevent future complications. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe the district nurses' experiences of supporting families with an overweight child to a healthier lifestyle. Methodology: Qualitative interviews were conducted with eight district nurses in child health care in southern Sweden. The analyses of the interviews were done by manifest qualitative content analysis. Results: Study findings are reported in three categories:”Relationships between district nurses and parents”, “The importance of parents' awareness and willingness to change” and “Supporting families to healthy nutrition and exercise”. The study showed that parents understanding and willingness to change and motivation was the key to change to a healthier lifestyle when a child was overweight. Trying to support a family when parents lacked insight was a difficult balancing act that required a professional approach. District nurses' pre-understanding, experiences, prejudices and attitudes may affect their treatment and family reactions consciously or unconsciously. They could sometimes feel frustration when families were not interested in the support they had to offer. Multidisciplinary collaboration was infrequent. Conclusion: It is significant that district nurses are aware of that not all perceive obesity as a problem. Own preconceived ideas and values can affect the interaction with families. Parents’ knowledge and motivation are determining factors for district nurses to support families to a healthier lifestyle.

Hejde, Alexander, and Peter Kylén. Thesis, Halmstad University, School of Business and Engineering (SET), 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hh:diva-4811.

Full text
Abstract:

District heating constitutes about 12 % (48 TWh) of the total energy usage in Sweden. Arguments for utilize district heating to provide housings and premises with heat are the possibility to use different kinds of fuels with various prices and quality, the good efficiency a centralized heating plant gives and the benefits of produce electricity and heat at the same time.

The energy company HEM supplies Halmstad and surrounding area with district heating and the produced amount of energy 2009 was 596 GWh. Waste and bio fuels constitutes the largest part of produced energy but also industrial lost heat and small amounts of oil and natural gas are used to produce heat.

The competitive situation for district heating is in many places close to monopolistic because only one major participant owns the market. It is important to improve a district heating system to maintain it’s ability to be competitive in the future. The following report investigates and describes interventions to make an already existing district heating system more efficient.

From meetings with personnel, ten items has been presented evaluating different elements in the district heating system of Halmstad. These elements also give a view of how well HEM:s district heating system works in different areas.

The conclusion of this report shows that the potential of a more energy efficient system is possible but the economical benefits are few.

Enarsson, Elin, and Renée Magnusson.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Wound treatment is a part of the district nurse daily tasks, a task that is time consuming. The focus is often in finding the right dressing and conversion interval. The patient's lifestyle affects the wound healing process. Through a holistic view and a collaboration with the patient, wound healing can be facilitated. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe how the district nurse works with the elderly patient's lifestyle in connection with difficult-to-heal leg ulcers. Method: Qualitative method with inductive approach was used in the study. The data collection was carried out with a web-based, asynchronous survey. The sample consisted of district nurses from the southeastern region and the collected material was analyzed using a content analysis. Results: The district nurses described a lack of structure in the work with the patient's lifestyle. The documentation was made in different ways in primary care and municipal home health care. This led to a lack of information transfer and follow-up. The district nurse discussed the patient's lifestyle with open questions and motivational conversations. At the same time, they emphasized the importance of the patient's own responsibility. The district nurses felt that more attention should be paid to the importance of living habits. To do that, time and continuity are needed. The district nurses described that reflection is seldom carried out in a structured way. Reflection was requested by the district nurses for the exchange of knowledge and for raising awareness of living habits. Conclusion: Despite the fact that the district nurses have great competence in working with living habits in connection with wound healing, there is too little focus in the daily work. The district nurses' preventive work is seen as a core element in the profession. Living habits need to be given a greater place in wound care work in primary care and municipal home health care to draw attention to the connection with wound healing.

Thesis, Littoral, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014DUNK0362/document.

Abstract:
Agriculture and the rural society have been constantly changing in the district of Montreuil-sur-Mer since 1850. The production and marketing techniques and structures haves modernized. Farming and cattle breeding have developed. Unionism, mutualism and cooperation have emerged. Farms have become huger and the numbers of farmers has been decreasing. The district has got one of the most powerful and active organizations in the country. The Agricultural Company of Montreuil-sur-Mer was established in 1821 and has been defending the farmers interests and spreading progress since. It was run b Octave Corne from 1923 to 1956. It reached its climax during the interwar period. However, the territory remained one of the least developed areas of the Straits of Dover throughout those years. Productivity, cereal crops in particular, has been one of the lowest of the Straits of Dover. Farms are less well-equipped than in the Arras and Bethune areas. Backwardness mainly results from the natural conditions which are quite hard, the poor quality of the soil and from a conservative attitude. Disparities remain at a local level as well. The rapid expansion of farming and cattle breeding is far more important in the coast areas and in the south of the Canche than in the north eastern ones. The regions of Fruges and Hucqueliers are indisputably the most deprived of the district

Abstract:
Small-scale Business Enterprises (SBEs) lack proper mechanisms for supporting the provision and access to business information that can nurture their development in Kenya. This study investigated the role that public libraries could play in supporting the development of SBEs in Meru County with a view to developing a model that would enable public libraries to effectively support the development of SBEs. The study used the pragmatic paradigm to explore the identified phenomena. It applied the mixed methods approach and survey research design; collected data from 355 SBEs, 21 staff from three public libraries and two staff from the enterprise development unit of Meru County. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews and document analysis. The response rate was 83.4% and 95% for SBEs and public library staff respectively. The descriptive and inferential statistics were used with the help of SPSS and Excel. Thematic analysis was applied on qualitative data. The study found that the factors that influence the development of SBEs are anchored in the environmental, cultural and personality factors of SBEs. SBEs have a myriad of business information needs which are sector-specific and cut across all the stages of business development. To fulfil these needs, most SBEs consult informal information sources and places. Technology-related tools were a popular means of accessing business information. Public libraries were poorly stocked with business information sources while business information services were in a desolate state. The study concludes that public libraries have facilitative and functional roles of providing business information solutions to SBEs by collaborating with like- minded stakeholders. The availability and accessibility of business information sources and services at public libraries is critical in addressing the information needs of SBEs. The study recommends repositioning of public libraries as business community development centres by providing value-based information sources and services. Public libraries need to revise their collection development policy, increase budget allocation, establish business information centres, seek partnerships, improve ICT facilities, ensure adequate staffing, engage business services librarians, open more libraries and widen their business outreach activities for effective support of SBEs. Policy framework and support systems for symmetrical access to business information, and entrepreneurial training for SBEs and for public library staff are needed. The proposed model of public library’s support for the development of SBEs is valuable and contribute to knowledge in business development.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how, in the decades after the War of 1812, slavery and the slave trade in the city invited domestic and international criticism as the movement to abolish slavery focused its efforts on the District. As abolitionism became a national force in American politics in the 1830s, the national battle over slavery was waged in large part in and about the nation’s capital, and local abolitionists, black and white, actively challenged slavery within the city itself. Washington became the national battleground over slavery not only because it was the seat of government but also because of the city’s political impotence. Because Congress had veto power over any legislation passed by the city’s local council, national leaders could (and did) use Washington as a pawn in their political power struggles. Escalating political and racial tensions erupted in an 1835 race riot that concludes the chapter.

Abstract:
This book takes up the problems that we run into when we judge works of art to be morally good or bad. This might seem like an unserious thing to do. In public discourse, such judgments are often born of prejudice or are mere devices for political scapegoating. For example, former senator Jesse Helms’s attacks on the alleged immorality of Mapplethorpe’s photography seem to have been grounded in his hatred and fear of gays and lesbians; leaders of the National Rifle Association routinely raise moral concerns about violent video games as means to distract people and to undermine public support for gun control. We ought not to take such moral judgments very seriously....

Abstract:
This chapter begins with the axiomatic premise that nature was no friend to the Anglo-Saxons: exile into the wilderness often equated with both physical and spiritual death and the power of water was equally frightening. We have only to look to the quintessential locus for the image of the Anglo-Saxons’ distrust and fear of the sea, lines 850-866 of Christ II, which presents life as a journey over difficult seas. In Beowulf, the mere of Grendel’s mother gapes as a kind of hell-mouth, while even the fragmentary description of the mysterious baths in The Ruin uses language reminiscent of the destructive flame of Beowulf’s dragon. On the face of it, Old English poetry provides no evidence of practical uses for water except as a method of transportation; nevertheless, the poetic manifestations of Anglo-Saxon antipathy towards water may well demonstrate the ways in which the figurative language can denote the physical realities of sea, mere, and river during the period.

Abstract:
The time for a Fulldome Manifesto has come because fulldome as an immersive, surround, communal medium is happening now. It comes as a vast vessel and in new form, with deep changes in the production and perception of 360-degree media. Within seconds, and without changing seat or body, one can switch from visiting a church, mosque, synagogue, or temple to being lured onto The Red Light District on a custom, generative, real-time responsive, science-fiction planet. Fulldome's mere scale can provoke profound wonder and interconnectedness and encapsulate the intersection of all media disciplines, unlike any other multimedia vessels humans have built so far. Like the membrane of a cell, fulldome houses the cross mingling of desires, projections, and technological abilities. In Tour d'Horizon For The Immersive Inclined, authors venture Towards a Fulldome Manifesto—exploring fulldome as a medium, venue, and genre while pointing to its promise for the advancement of immersive media.

Abstract:
Protecting and preserving the knowledge and skills of traditional crafts is a growing challenge. Further, ensuring a sustainable livelihood to artisans working in these traditional crafts is a tall order. Section one of the chapter explores the traditional tribal art form widely practised among a semi-nomadic tribe in the north-west region of India. Section two of the chapter examines the role of a not-for-profit organization involved in the revival of the ancient Lambani craft. Sabala- an organization located in one of the districts in Southern India has been working on the revival and preservation of Lambani embroidery. At Sabala, crafts are designed to enhance the creative appeal of products for the local and global market, as well. The integration of both, the creative design and the execution of craft in the hands of the artisans can ensure ingenuity in the craft form and not reduce the craft worker to a mere labourer.

Lyman, Peter. "Technology and Computer Literacy." In Rethinking Liberal Education. Oxford University Press, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195097726.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
What is "computer literacy," and what is its place in liberal education? Liberal education is incomplete if it does not prepare educated people to address the presence of technology and, more important, the presence of technology's information products, in an informed and critical way. There are four reasons I say this. First, the traditional liberal arts understanding of technology as machine, merely an "object" in relation to human "subjectivity," is an essentially aristocratic attitude that fails to acknowledge the way technology and information saturate the modern world in which educated people live and work. Second, defining the computer as a mere machine is an uncritical ideology that enhances the technological mythology that computers are more objective than humans, thereby masking and legitimating the social power of technicians. But, third, there is a deeper reason as well: technical objects are created within a technical culture that contains a powerful (if tacit) critique of liberal education, one that has the potential to replace liberal education in the modern world. Finally, liberal education's dismissal of computers as mere machines distracts attention from the fact that technology's information products define modernity: mass communications mediate most of the information in our culture, and digital technology produces the images and information that saturate everyday life. If liberal education is to come to terms with the significance of technology in the modern world, or to subject technology-mediated communication and information products to critique, liberal education must also become self-reflective about the technical objects that shape its own communications and information. What is the origin of the book form, as it has evolved from the codex, the journal, and the social organization of education around printed objects (the bookstore, the lecture, the library, the disciplinary society, scholarly publishers, the college)? What are the origins of the concept of creativity stemming from individual genius, and of the social construction of the "author" as property right holder? In some ways, higher education is the last social institution primarily organized around print technology and still resistant to information technology.

"The difficulty with the case is that although the court was unanimous in its decision (in effect, because the judge had misdirected the jury), there is clear divergence in opinion as to what the law should be; between Mellish LJ and Baggallay LJ on the one hand and Bramwell LJ on the other. The latter’s robust views on the need for parties to look after their own interests would seem to leave little scope for judicial intervention. In general, the law has developed more along the lines indicated by Mellish LJ. For example, the latter’s point that some tickets might reasonably be regarded as mere receipts was applied in Chapleton v Barry Urban District Council, in relation to the hire." Kusuma, Mutiara Tirta Prabandari Lintang. "Understanding the Contextual Idiosyncrasies of Stunting Prevention Program at District and Village Levels in Indonesia Using the Ecological Approach." In The 7th International Conference on Public Health 2020. Masters Program in Public Health, Universitas Sebelas Maret, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.26911/the7thicph.04.34.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Despite rapid economic growth, stunting affects one third of the children under five population in Indonesia. The Government of Indonesia (GoI) realizing the problem, established the National Strategy to Accelerate Stunting Prevention as a national priority program for 2017 to 2021. The GoI plans to maximize the use of resources, policies, and programs that encompasses nutrition-specific and sensitive interventions directed to the first 100 days of life. This study aimed to explore the extent of program planning, budgeting, and implementation related to stunting prevention at district and village level as well as to understand the challenges presented to converge intervention. Subjects and Method: A case study with ecological approach was conducted in 10 villages from five districts in Indonesia. The study method included focus group discussions with 70 district officials and 100 village representatives, interviews with 12 key informants from district planning agency, document analysis, and reflective journaling. The data were reported descriptively. Results: Most head districts, officials from relevant departments and village leaders committed to stunting prevention following the vice president decree of stunting as a national priority. As a result, programs and budget were in place and local initiatives to prevent stunting were on the rise. Despite the commitment, many expressed ambivalences and disregarded the issue as a mere short stature (genetic variation). Thus, problems related to efficiency, coverage, and sustainability persists as maintaining motivation among staffs were difficult. In some settings, the situation was exacerbated by factors such as high financial dependency, misconception, and poor gender relation. Conclusion: The policy and programs to control stunting among children in Indonesia are in place. However, challenges occur due to the complexity in governance system as well as lack of political will. Better communication and cooperation are essential for well implemented policies. Abstract:
