Full textIt is not sufficient to graft liquid crystals regularly and lateraly along a polymer chain, to obtain a mesomorphic comb-like polymer. The polymorphism of these compounds comes from an equilibrium between the randomness of the polymer and the alignment of the mesogens via a spacer. We show that the polymer backbone (chain without graftings) is always deformed in presence of the mesogenic order. This has been made with 7 polymers of different backbones and different mesogens. In the nematic phase, the backbone adopts a slightly oblate shape in which the mesogens are more or less perpendicular to the backbone. In the smectic phase, this oblate tendency accelerates itself and the backbone is confined between the successive mesogenic layers. The degree of confinement is related to the type of phase (SAd, SA1) and to the molecular organization of the mesogens for a given type of phase. If a reentrant nematic phase occurs at lower temperature (the study has been made with only one polymer), the backbone conformation reverses itself, and becomes a prolate shape. The smectic fluctuations present in this phase play an important role in the backbone conformation. These results have been obtained by small angle neutron scattering on mixtures of hydrogenated and deuterated compounds and completed by diffraction measurements

Full textNew Nickel complexes with sulphur ligands and heteroaromatic salts (pyrylium, dithiolium) have been synthesized. Several of them exhibit thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties. The nature of the mesophase (SA, columnar) depends on the number and the position of the substituents. Radical-anions salts (TCNQ) associated with the cations mentioned above were prepared. The powder conductivity was found to be about 10⁻³S. Cm⁻¹

Full textIonic liquids based on imidazolium are an excellent platform that can be designed to promote liquid crystalline phases. In order to introduce additional properties, we synthesized compounds with a rigid expanded core. Herein, we reported an Ullmann-type coupling using only Cu(II)-NaY as catalyst and potassium carbonate as base. This synthetic approach avoids the use of solvents, inert atmosphere and ligands. We have optimized this coupling using the technique of microwave synthesis (reduction of reaction time and by-products formed). After studying this methodology, we have extended it to other behaviors. Thus we have synthesized ionic materials (scintillators) with properties of detection and discrimination of radiation neutrons/gamma by introducing chromophores in our compounds. This Ullmann-type coupling has allowed to prepare compounds that can have electronic properties (conduction and electrochromism)
