Abstract:
Se estudian algunas de las representaciones de los indios que aparecieron en la prensa ecuatoriana durante el quinto centenario. Las fuentes usadas para este propósito son los periódicos Vistazo y El Comercio, se atiende especialmente a sus reportajes sobre la conmemoración y a los artículos de opinión. El análisis de una selección de estas fuentes ilustra el tipo de producción de la imagen del indígena que se instaló en la memoria pública, como elemento que apuntala el discurso nacional de matriz blanco-mestiza, opuesta a las reivindicaciones formuladas en la coyuntura del quinto centenario por las organizaciones indígenas. Esta producción de la imagen se compuso de acuerdo con dos motivaciones: como recurso de afirmación del mestizaje de origen hispánico y como una forma de escamoteo ideológico y cultural contra las reivindicaciones políticas del movimiento indígena.

En la actualidad, el pasillo canción continúa siendo el género musical preferido por la mayoría de los ecuatorianos; ha sido adaptado a versiones que han permitido nuevamente popularizarlo. La guitarra forma parte fundamental en el acompañamiento de los pasillos canción. Por ello, en la presente investigación se pretende exponer algunas características técnicas populares y académicas que contribuyeron con un mestizaje musical para la interpretación del pasillo canción en la guitarra.

El presente trabajo de investigación, pretende conocer cuál es la actitud de las nuevas generaciones hacía la tauromaquia, actividad considerada como arte y que naciera como resultado del mestizaje hace más de 500 años, pero que ha calado hondo en los lugareños que se ha convertido en parte primordial en el desarrollo de sus fiestas populares, hasta constituirse en raigambre de nuestra propia cultura, circunstancia que fue ratificada a través de consulta popular realizada en el año 2011. Sin embargo, existe una corriente de grupos foráneos en su mayoría de anti-taurinos, que buscan influir con sus tendencias animalistas para que la fiesta taurina desaparezca y con ella el desarrollo económico que genera. Los nuevos jóvenes y ciudadanos del futuro, en la medida de reconocer a la ciudad de Riobamba, como la Capital Taurina del Ecuador, será importante conocer cuál es su actitud hacia el desarrollo de esta tradicional fiesta taurina.

Abstract:
El propósito de este artículo es registrar los saberes ancestrales al saber escondido entre los olores, sabores, texturas y tradiciones de las parroquias de Cacha y Flores, la cual pervive como una evidencia viva de la historia e identidad de los pueblos kichwa de la sierra centro en Ecuador. Para efectos de esta investigación, se adoptó el concepto establecido por la Convención para la Salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial UNESCO. El análisis de la información fue cualitativo, compilando historias, entrevistas y el ordenamiento territorial del Cantón Riobamba junto a las parroquias Rural Cacha y Rural Flores, con la finalidad de cumplir con el proceso de salvaguardar el patrimonio cultural e inmaterial de estos pueblos. Para finalizar, es importante destacar que la parroquia de Cacha se autodefine como Primera Parroquia Indígena en Ecuador, por lo que muchas de las prácticas y tradiciones que se mencionan sobre esta parroquia, no están presentes en Flores, que tiene otros sentidos de identidad y muchos de sus elementos culturales así como su autodefinición, están relacionados con el mestizaje.

Abstract:
Es imperativo construir, asumir y mantener una identidad social y cultural afín a las raíces. Los montubios del litoral ecuatoriano son considerados, de una u otra manera, parte de un pueblo producto del mestizaje costeño, con identidad propia. Avoca saldar una deuda social que ha impedido reconocer y valorar su forma de vida, no obstante la contribución económica, social y humana que desde el área rural ha aportado. En este ensayo se reconoce y valora el importante rol que desempeña el montubio en la vida social y cultural del Ecuador, reconocimiento efectuado a través de una caracterización de su forma de vida, dada en sus diferentes contextos de actuación. Esto se lo asume como una cuestión de reeducación sociocultural que, al vivirla, se convierte en un proceso capaz de construir una nueva cosmovisión pertinente a la realidad. Palabras claves: cosmovisión, deuda social, identidad social y cultural, interculturalidad, reeducación sociocultural.

Abstract:
Background: In 2014, Ecuador became the first country in Latin America to adopt the nutritional traffic light labeling system as a public policy aimed at guiding informed food choices. Objective: To describe the differences in comprehension and use of the new nutrition label in 2 different ethnic populations residing in a limited resource area of central Ecuador. Methods: A total of 394 women (18-75 years, 54.8% indigenous and 45.2% mixed-race mestizas) were randomly selected in the Chimborazo Province and were requested by a questionnaire to provide information regarding their awareness and comprehension of the traffic light nutritional labeling system and personal use of the food label in food selection. Results: Indigenous women had a high percentage who lacked any formal education (43.5%) and a greater proportion were not aware of the labeling system when compared with the mestizas (84.3% vs 46%; P = .001). In both groups, the main reason for not reading labels was lack of understanding of its meaning (50% indigenous vs 32.7% mestiza; P < .05). The reported use of the labeling system for food choices was low—on average, 32% of the mestizas and 5% of the indigenous women reported using nutrition label information to guide their purchase and consumption of packaged food items. Conclusion: The use of nutritional labeling is low in both mestiza and indigenous Ecuadorians, although higher among the mestizas. Among the indigenous women, mostly likely owing to less education, limited nutrition-related health knowledge, and higher risk for food insecurity, the utility of the new traffic light food label is limited.

Abstract:
The 1990s were a period of intense socio-economic upheaval in Ecuador, in part due to the numerous protests that would come to be known as the Levantamiento Indígena. Notoriously disenfranchised since the bloody conquest of the Americas, peoples of various Indigenous nationalities that reside within Ecuador fought for the constitutional recognition of the nation as both plurinational and multicultural, in order to secure intercultural public policies that would affect patterns of agrarian distribution, indigenous education, health, and overall representation. The prominence of the Indigenous movement and the revalorization of the Indigenous identity throughout Ecuador became an attractive vehicle for which to leverage for rights with the state by coastal communities that were long considered to be mestizo as opposed to Indigenous. Communities in coastal Ecuador engaged in strategic identity construction in order to capitalize on the prominence of the Indigenous identity. By adopting external markers of indigeneity, mestiza women and men engaged in a process of reindigenization as a deliberate political strategy in order to be able to demand rights from the Ecuadorian state.
