Full textThis thesis focuses on the design of an in-situ measurement system to detect variable disturbances in the near field of antenna arrays. The first part was focused on the study of the benefit of the monitoring system for direction finding antennas (DFA). A quantitative study of degradation of performances of DFA installed on a carrier in presence of variable obstacles was done. The second point of the study concerns the choice for the technology for the diagnostic system design. The Optically Modulated Scatterer Technique (OMS) is selected. A model that predicts the OMS backscattered power is developed to select the optimal dimension of the probe. Following the theoretical studies, a 12 cm OMS probe coupled to the nonlinear device (PDCS30T) was designed. Measurements in anechoic chamber were conducted to validate the budget link model and measure the sensitivity of the probe to nearby objects. Finally, a study is conducted to investigate the sensitivity required by the diagnostic probes for detecting the presence of obstacles. A dimensioning of the overall system is computed

Full textPerformances of modern materials for thermal and mechanical protection are directly related to their thermal properties on a microscopic scale. These materials often consist of a complex assembly of which it is necessary to be able to characterize and envisage ageing. The interest and the originality of this work lie in the development of two models based on the principle of photothermal microscopy by modulated photoreflexion allowing to analyse and to understand the thermal transfers on a micrometric scale in materials presenting microscopic cracks or interfaces. These heterogeneities are modelled either by a thermal contact resistance (TCR) or by a third thermal body (TTB) with non-null thickness and specific thermal properties. These two models lead to the analytical expression of the temperature field on the surface of a material submitted to a localized thermal stress and showing heterogeneities perpendicular to its surface. A sensitivity study gives the optimal experimental conditions to estimate the thermophysical parameters of the heterogeneities. The experimental results concern copper-steel, chromium-steel interfaces and microscopic cracks in chromium deposits

Full textThe increasing use of surface coatings in fields such as electronic, microelectronic or optic makes the evaluation of their physical properties necessary. For the characterisation of elastic parameters and the thickness determination, the non-destructive ultrasonic testing can be used. More particularly, laser can generate and detect acoustic waves among which Rayleigh waves. The laser-ultrasound technique has the advantage of not requiring contact with the sample to inspect contrary to the conventional piezoelectric methods. In the coated structures, the Rayleigh wave is denatured by the layer and becomes dispersive. Several modes of propagation called Rayleigh modes can be studies. The purpose of this work was to help characterize these structures. A finite element method has been developed too in order to predict the propagation of the first Rayleigh mode. Results obtained by two complementary methods allowing a non-contact measurement in a large bandwidth (frm 5 MHz to 200 MHz) are presented, and the dispersion of the Rayleigh wave propagation velocity is analyzed to determine the thickness and elastic parameters of the considerated layers

Full textThe generalized Lorenz-Mie (GLMT) is developed to describe the interaction between an arbitrary shaped beam and a homogeneous spheroid. Analytical expressions of the amplitudes of the scattering fields, absorption and extinction crosssections, and the radiation pressure are obtained. The numerical results are also presented. To overcome the drawback of the GLMT in numerical calculation for a large spheroid, the classical geometrical optics is extended to the case of Gaussian beam scattering by a spheroid. In experimental aspect, an optical system on the basis of the spectral light extinction method is developed and used for wet steam measurement in EDF. The influences of the scattering by the particles in the edge measurement zone and of the multiple scattering on the extinction spectrum are analyzed by using the Monte Carlo method

Full textIn many engineering applications, assembled structures are widely used. These structures are composed of thin-walled members connected together by mechanical junctions, which characterisation is necessary to have a predictive model of the vibratory behaviour of assembled structure. Using the state vector formalism to describe the structural waves propagation in a bidimensional medium, a junction can be model intrinsically by a scattering matrix, which properties are studied in the bidimensional case. The case of a mono dimensional junction between two beams is developed: this junction couples extensional and bending waves. A measurement method of the coefficients of the scattering matrix is validated using a blocking mass junction. The study shows that slight modifications of the junction have a great influence on the scattering matrix coefficients

Full textNova is a thermonuclear runaway occurring in binary system of stars. The observation of the gamma rays emitted after a nova is a way to better understand this phenomenon. According to the models, the γ line at 511 keV, produced in the annihilation between positrons and electrons, would be the most intense line several hours after the explosion. One of the main positron emitters would be the 18F radioactive isotope. In order to improve the predictive power of the models, it is crucial to better determine the amount of 18F produced in the nova. Yet, the 18F destruction rate 18F(p,α)15O is given with large uncertainties. Measuring the spectroscopic properties (energy, width, spin) of states in the compound nucleus 19Ne should allow us to constrain the reaction rate. In this context, an experiment based on a new inelastic scattering method (19Ne(p,p’)19Ne*) was performed at GANIL with the VAMOS spectrometer. The detection system has been adapted to detect for the first time high energy protons (p’). A good energy resolution in inverse kinematic has been reached (σ=33 keV). The angular distribution measurement of decaying particles should provide the spin assignment of the states in a model independent way. Unfortunately, an unforeseen contamination has prevented us to complete this measurement. New spectroscopic information have been extracted and contributed to reduce the uncertainty of the 18F(p,α)15O reaction rate in a significant way. The data are compatible with a new broad state below the proton threshold (6. 41 MeV). This state seems to be sufficiently broad to contribute to the destruction reaction rate of 18F and reduces the chances for satellite detection

Full textLn the context of the European Water Framework Directive implementation, new tools for river toxicity assessment have to be developed. Periphytic communities, which play a fundamental role in the trophic web in lotic systems, could be regarded as early wamings for detection of acute toxicant exposure by monitoring its physiological state. Several studies were then carried out by means of the chlorophyll fluorescence measurement in modulated light technique (P AM fluorescence) which helps to estimate the photosynthetic activity in a non-intrusive way. The aim of the present work was to study the effects of several pollutants commonly found in aquatic ecosystems (Cu, Zn, Cd, atrazine, isoproturon) on stream periphyton physiology and to highlight the role of light as an addition al potentially stressful parameter. Our results showed a relative resistance of the natural biofilms to the pollutants on a short term scale (< 1 day) which depended both on the mechanism of action of the toxicant (herbicides vs heavy metals) and the biofilms architecture. By combining novel experimental designs both in field and laboratory conditions, we also demonstrated that periphyton can be more affected when another stress, such as light, is applied. This work confmns the usefulness of chlorophyll fluorescence-based methods in ecotoxicological studies, particularly in order to detect in situ herbicide toxic effects

Full textDue to market demand and technical progresses, a new generation of optical components requires much more sophisticated structures with a great number of layers. These complex structures enable to achieve severe optical performances but, at the same time, enhance light scattering processes. For these reasons, it is essential to develop a metrological tool which provides an accurate quantification of the spectral and angular behavior of scattering losses, with sufficient angular and spectral resolution. In order to face this issue, new investigations were performed during this PhD thesis and led to the development of the new scatterometer SALSA (Spectral and Angular Light Scattering characterization Apparatus). The use of both a broad-band source and a tunable filter allows to accurately select the illumination wavelength and the spectral bandwidth on the whole spectral range of CCD detectivity. Set-up SALSA allows us to perform the measurements of scattering losses on a wide spectral range (400-1000 nm), with high dynamics (>8 decades), high accuracy and low detectivity (a few 10-8 sr-1). Moreover, with set-up SALSA we are able to measure the transmission of interferential filters on the same spectral range, with high accuracy (1%) and a high dynamic (>10 decades, which is a unique performance)

Full textThe aircraft icing is one of the most important problem in the field of aviation safety. The ice accretion on the external parts of the aircraft (wings, probes, engines) can be at the origin of great damages which can lead to the crash. In order to avoid such accidents, the Ferderal Aviation Agency requires that aircraft manufacturers have to be able to characterize the icing conditions in real-time during flight by using a dedicated airborne probe. It means size measurement of supercooled water droplets and ice crystals around the aircraft and the calculation of their concentration (in g. M−3). This thesis’s goal is to validate and improve the use of the optical technique Interferometric Particle Imaging (IPI) set up in the airborne probe developed here. The IPI technique is already widely used for droplets sizing, we extend it to the size measurement of irregular rough particles like ice crystals. The build of an icing column allowed to generate ice crystals in-lab which facilitated the set up of different validation experiments for the size measurement of irregular rough particles by IPI technique. The first experiment was the simultaneous recording of IPI images and digital holograms of water droplets and ice crystals. The second one was the simultaneous recording of IPI and in-focus images (microscopy) of ice crystals. The analysis of the final results validated the size measurement of ice crystals with an IPI system and also highlighted that it was possible to retrieve some morphological informations about these irregular particles. During flight test sessions in January 2016, the AIIS probe (Airborne Interferometric Ice Sensor) has detected and has measured sizes of water droplets and ice crystals inside clouds
