Abstract:
This paper uses membership categorization analysis to illustrate how five women invoke multiple female gender and sexuality identity categories in personal narratives to construct the device of womanhood. The five racially diverse women include four self-identified lesbians and one heterosexual and range in age from mid-twenties to early forties. Analysis of their two hour audio recorded interaction illustrates that gender and sexuality cannot be understood as a binary difference between men and women. These women use revolutionary categories, defined on their own terms rather than by outsider

The purpose of this paper is to create increased understanding of how pupils learn statistics. This includes gaining insight into pupils' use of their own experience and group experience to help to get a better understanding of statistical problem solving. The study's research questions are about how pupils learn to work with data in tables and diagram and how pupils learn to work with measures. The theoretical framework consists of two approaches to studying learning. One approach is based on pupils’ cognitive conditions, called set-befores, and the pupils' previous experiences, called met-be

Abstract:
AbstractThe Netherlands provides extensive and flexible support for young parents and met the Barcelona targets for childcare provision even before they were set. Yet childcare isn’t evenly distributed, and provision is better for some than for others. We use the NKPS to examine childcare availability and its association with maternal employment. To enrich this analysis, respondents are geocoded and this enables them to be linked to the Landelijk Register Kinderopvang en Peuterspeelzalen (Register for Childcare and Toddler Groups; www.landelijkregisterkinderopvang.nl). In linking this data, three often neglected dimensions of childcare provision are captured. First, at the most basic level the geographic proximity of childcare services is captured (i.e. distance to nearest provider). Second, the intensity or availability of choice is measured (i.e. number of providers within 2 kms). Third, the diversity of options is measured (i.e. the ratio of different types of providers).

AbstractIt was only since 1946 [1945] when my uncle moved to Berkeley that I got to know him well. Before this time we had never lived in the same town, and I had only seen him rarely. Otto Stern moved into a house he had bought several years earlier in the Berkeley hills not far from my parents’ house. Because he was a bachelor, he hired a housekeeper who came in six days a week for a few hours to cook and keep house. He loved good food and good wine. The housekeeper for the last years did not keep the house as clean as he would have liked, but her cooking met with his approval, so she stayed for many years. On Sundays, he would have dinner with his sister, Berta (my mother) and family, or he would go into town for dinner in a restaurant and then to a movie. He loved movies, and Shirley MacLaine was one of his favorite actresses.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents the case of Ms. Suzuki, a modest Japanese woman who had worked as a clerk for more than 20 years. After she was promoted at age 43, she found herself unable to adapt properly to her management position because it required assertiveness and leadership. She saw a psychiatrist following her supervisor’s advice. She had some of the symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD), but it was uncertain whether she met the diagnostic criteria. To elucidate the considerations involved before initiating or refraining from pharmacotherapy, I refer to the ethical debates on neuroenhancement. First, medication would spoil her authenticity, because her modesty is part of her virtue. Second, medicating a person seeing a psychiatrist at her boss’s instigation might constitute a milder form of coercive treatment. Third, diagnosing Ms. Suzuki with SAD seems to endorse her company’s culture, whereas denying her disorder status would affirm Japanese culture’s oppressiveness toward women. When a case lies on the border between normality and pathology, relying on the psychiatric diagnosis for ethical guidance disguises value judgments for matters of fact. Therefore, we should explicitly state the conflicting values and the cultural influences on them to make better clinical decisions.

Abstract:
Although transgender individuals have been absent from Star Trek since its 1966 debut, this absence has conspicuously haunted the franchise in the form of illusions, allegories, metaphors, alien species, and various other metonymic mirages. Unsurprisingly, the franchise’s latest iteration, Star Trek: Discovery, is no exception. This chapter argues that despite depicting a seemingly cisgender universe, the show, like its predecessors and reviewers, does not seem to be able to escape this significant absence of trans characters and the associated cisgender anxiety. It examines the affective dimensions of the show’s and its reviewer’s struggle to come to terms with its nascent trans potentiality. Moreover, it explores the potential ramifications of these allusions to aspects of trans experience from a trans studies perspective.

Research in product trust thus far has focused on the product trustworthiness: manipulating the product’s design, for example, anthropomorphizing an autonomous vehicle and measuring changes in trust. Shotcrete is a modern technology for protecting the excavations in solid rock masses and it is a process where the concrete mass is applied to the surface by means of high pressure. The installation of sprayed concrete requires special equipment, also a lot of attention and well-trained workers. For that purpose, quality controls are performed during each installation of the shotcrete. In order to ensure that the requirements are met, there is: small, normal and more extensive quality control. The current Food Standards Agency consumer guidance states that consumers can freeze pre-packed food right up to the “use-by” date and, once food has been defrosted, it should be consumed within 24 hours. This strategic review has collated relevant data to determine whether there is an increased risk in relation to freezing ready-to-eat and non-ready-to-eat foods on the use-by date compared to the day before the use-by date. The review has focused on how the shelf-life of a food is determined and the effects of freezing, thawing and refrigeration on foodborne pathogens, including Bacillus spp.
