Abstract:
Background:The Current Population Survey (CPS) and the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) use the 2002 census occupation system to classify workers into 509 separate occupations arranged into 22 major occupational categories. Methods:We describe the methods and rationale for assigning detailed Metabolic Equivalent (MET) estimates to occupations and present population estimates (comparing outputs generated by analysis of previously published summary MET estimates to the detailed MET estimates) of intensities of occupational activity using the 2003 ATUS data comprised of 20,720 respondents, 5323 (2917 males and 2406 females) of whom reported working 6+ hours at their primary occupation on their assigned reporting day. Results:Analysis using the summary MET estimates resulted in 4% more workers in sedentary occupations, 6% more in light, 7% less in moderate, and 3% less in vigorous compared with using the detailed MET estimates. The detailed estimates are more sensitive to identifying individuals who do any occupational activity that is moderate or vigorous in intensity resulting in fewer workers in sedentary and light intensity occupations. Conclusions:Since CPS/ATUS regularly captures occupation data it will be possible to track prevalence of the different intensity levels of occupations. Updates will be required with inevitable adjustments to future occupational classification systems.

Abstract:
Within the North-west Aboriginal reserve of South Australia a traditional system of tribal Aboriginal culture is currently maintained and reproduced. The observable culture of the Aboriginal people of this region retains distinct traditional elements and a life-style very different from that of the dominant white Australian society. Within this socio-cultural setting, schools which have been operational in some form since the establishment of the settlements face a unique challenge. Unfortunately, the challenge has, in most cases, not been successfully met, since the lack of success of Aboriginal students in the school situation is a damning indictment of the introduced Western system of schooling. Success is measured by the achievement of the set goals of the school, but frequently these reflect a white Australian value system.

Paget, Mark Frederick. "Genetic evaluation models and strategies for potato variety selection." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Forestry, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9953.

Full text
Abstract:
A series of studies are presented on the genetic evaluation of cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) to improve the accuracy and efficiency of selection at various stages of a breeding programme. The central theme was the use of correlated data, such as relationship information and spatial and across-trial correlations, within a linear mixed modelling framework to enhance the evaluation of candidate genotypes and to improve the genetic response to selection. Analyses focused on several social and economically-important traits for the enhancement of the nutritional value, disease resistance and yield of potato tubers. At the formative stages of a breeding scheme, devising a breeding strategy requires an improved understanding of the genetic control of target traits for selection. To guide a strategy that aims to enhance the micronutrient content of potato tubers (biofortification), univariate and multivariate Bayesian models were developed to estimate genetic parameters for micronutrient tuber content from a breeding population generated from crosses between Andean landrace cultivars. The importance of the additive genetic components and extent of the narrow-sense heritability estimates indicated that genotypic 'individual' recurrent selection based on empirical breeding values rather than family-based selection is likely to be the most effective strategy in this breeding population. The magnitude of genetic correlations also indicated that simultaneous increases in important tuber minerals, iron and zinc, could be achieved. Optimising selection efficiency is an important ambition of plant breeding programmes. Reducing the level of candidate replication in field trials may, under certain circumstances, contribute to this aim. Empirical field data and computer simulations inferred that improved rates of genetic gain with p-rep (partially replicated) testing could be obtained compared with testing in fully replicated trials at the early selection stages, particularly when testing over two locations. P-rep testing was able to increase the intensity of selection and the distribution of candidate entries across locations to account for G×E effects was possible at an earlier stage than is currently practised. On the basis of these results, it was recommended that the full replication of trials (at the first opportunity, when enough planting material is available) at a single location in the early stages of selection should be replaced with the partial replication of selection candidates that are distributed over two locations. Genetic evaluation aims to identify genotypes with high empirical breeding values (EBVs) for selection as parents. Using mixed models, spatial parameters to target greater control of localised field heterogeneity were estimated and variance models to account for across-trial genetic heterogeneity were tested for the evaluation of soil-borne powdery scab disease and tuber yield traits at the early stages of a selection programme. When spatial effects improved model fit, spatial correlations for rows and columns were mostly small for powdery scab, and often small and negative for marketable and total tuber yield suggesting the presence of interplot competition in some years for tuber yield traits. For the evaluation of powdery scab, genetic variance structures were tested using data from 12 years of long-term potato breeding METs (multi-environment trials). A simple homogeneous correlation model for the genetic effects was preferred over a more complex factor analytic (FA) model. Similarly, for the MET evaluation of tuber yield at the early stages, there was little benefit in using more complex FA models, with simple correlation structures generally the most favourable models fitted. The use of less complex models will be more straightforward for routine implementation of potato genetic evaluations in breeding programmes. Evaluations for (marketable) tuber yield were extended to multi-location MET data to characterise both genotypes and environments, allowing a re-evaluation of New Zealand MET selection strategies aimed at broad adaptation. Using a factor analytic mixed model, results indicated that the programme’s two main trial locations in the North and the South Islands optimised differentiation between genotypes in terms of G×E effects. There was reasonable performance stability of genotypes across test locations and evidence was presented for some, but limited, genetic progress of cultivars and advanced clonal selections for tuber marketable yield in New Zealand over recent years. The models and selection strategies investigated and developed in this thesis will allow an improved and more systematic application of genetic evaluations in potato selection schemes. This will provide the basis for well informed decisions to be made on selection candidates for the genetic improvement of potato in breeding programmes.

ABSTRACTThis thesis aims to explain how companies and organizations can form their recruitingprocess to successfully recruit people with the same values as the company ororganisation. We have conducted this thesis because we consider it to be of relevancedue to limited research on the subject. To fulfill the purpose of this thesis we havefocused on one main issue. That is how companies can shape their recruiting process torecruit people with the same values as the company. Our ambition is to describe thissubject from a recruiting perspective with the values in focus. We conducted seveninterviews with a qualitative approach for a deeper understanding of the studied topic. The interview respondents consist of a human resource coordinator, an operativemanager, an operator, and customer service workers. Some of which are people whocontinuously recruit people and some of which have themselves been recruited in thelast two years. In the final chapter we present our conclusion of the report. Because ofthe reports qualitative method it is difficult to present a complete picture. We thereforerefer to the last chapter for further reading.

Abstract: The aim of this research was analyzing teachers' prior knowledge about peace, Peace culture, Education for Peace and Education of values, in order to create a program for the continuous training of professionals who consider building peace a target in the educational process. The study presented takes as basis the references in Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy and Educational Psychology (Rousseau, Kant, Piaget, Adorno, Heidegger, Montessori, Dewey, Freire, Arendt, Jares, Delors, Serrano and La Taille and contemporaneous authors discussing the theme), as well as documents from UNESCO to promote a Culture of Peace concerning values of tolerance, equality, dignity and respect and the National Education Curriculum Parameters - PNC - Transverse Themes, Basis and Guidelines Laws of the National Education (LDB 9394/96) and the Child and Adolescent Stature - ECA. The research included forty-two teachers of Primary School (first levels) from the Municipal Education in a town in the interior of São Paulo. The adopted method was the survey research, which enabled the collection of data on actions and thoughts of a certain group of teachers, using qualitative and quantitative analyzes of the results Collection of data followed the guides of Methodology Q. Exploratory analysis of data was carried out by means of descriptive statistics (average, standard-deviation, minimum, medium, maximum, frequencies and percentages). Comparison among categories of methodology was carried out using ANOVA models. Through the qualitative analysis of the data it was possible to know the previous ideas of the professionals, for whom the concept of Peace is related to human beings' social living in the everyday relationships, self-welfare and welfare with others, which is manifested in the dialogue, mutual respect, and environment preservation. For the participants peace was also considered not as absence of violence, but as the idea of social justice, life guarantee and dignity for all member of society. According to the opinion of teachers participating in this study, the Peace Culture in the daily school is build up through the living within the family, the society and the school community, assuming as basis for this, living with values and attitudes of inclusion, refusing all expressions of discrimination and prejudice. Results also show that Education of Values was considered necessary to offer subsides for an education practice that aims at building up a Peace Culture. Based on the collected data, a program was created for the continuous training for teachers willing to work for establishing Local Peace in the schools they work. It will only be possible if the managing team, teachers and the school community, including the family, are prepared and engaged in this process.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to contribute knowledge of how preschool teachers work with equal value. My questions has been about how preschool teachers do to show children every humans equal value and how they do to meet all children based of this idea. I have used individual qualitative interviews whit 4 preschool teachers as the method for this study. In my result I have found that the preschool teachers worked a lot with equal values. Some preschool teachers worked in different ways every day using different methods like valuational and themelike activities. Common for all the preschool teachers is that they all say that it is extremely important to use the everyday interactions with the children to make them learn the importance of and meaning of every humans equal rights. Previous research and literature shows that it is important to work as a role model for the children. This is something that the preschool teachers I interviewed talk about as well.

Abstract:
Modification of the environment and the rapidly changing business world have forced companies to reorganize their services. In this context the purchasing function becomes an administrative function to a strategic function, impacting the performance of the company and its ability to create value directly. This thesis aims to analyze the value creation of the purchasing function by focusing on the role of the buyer. Our research is based on the analysis of the transformation of a purchasing function within the framework of a research contract in an international food company. The analytical methodology is qualitative, based on the use of Nvivo10 Lexical analysis software. They were put in perspective with the eyes of relevant themes from the case theoretical frameworks. Research shows that the buyer can both create value through the actions of productivity, and entrepreneurial activities that foster the development of sales. The results conceptualize the buyer and highlight the need for the buyer to hold, in addition to technical skills, Meta-competencies that will seize the opportunities of the ecosystem to transform them into marketable products or services. These Meta-competencies differentiate means employees and effective contributors; they can support the technical skills and acquire new ones. They attach to the behaviors and personal skills and are related to the personality of the individual. Finally, the thesis proposes an integrative skills model of the buyer, which accounts for the preponderance of Meta-skills as the basis of the ability of the buyer to create value

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to investigate what happens when the experiences and conceptions of physical education (PE) student teachers encounter the value structures of a PE teacher education programme. The starting point for the study are the criticisms that the PE teacher education programme has inadequate links to science, that it finds it difficult to challenge traditional gender patterns, and that the students' experiences of their own sporting activities are more important than the education programme for what knowledge is considered valuable. The study has a cultural sociological and gender theoretical perspective. The analysis has been done with the help of Pierre Bourdieu's concepts as the tools of analysis. The empirical evidence has been collected with the help of several different methods. Quantitative data has been collected with the help of questionnaires which a total of 450 student teachers returned; qualitative data has been collected using: essays written by PE student teachers during their physical education specialisation and in-depth interviews with teacher educators. The results show that today's education is still characterised by many of the traditions, norms and values which historically have been its distinguishing features. The “rules of the game” are generally taken for granted and this is based on a shared conception in the value of the education. In the eyes of the students, the trademark of a good PE teacher is to be good at many different sports, have in-depth knowledge of human biology, and have the “right” personality. They are less interested in pedagogical issues and they would have preferred the whole course to have served them with ready-made solutions and answers. Even if gender and social issues have been part of the education, the gender habitus has changed very little during the programme. The way they see the subject is largely the same as it was before the course, but what appeared to them to be a ”pure” sports subject before the course started has afterwards become more a way of “attaining health through sport”. The study indicates that the dominating values within the PE teacher education seem to be in harmony with the students' habitus which make it difficult to challenge the ”order of things” and  that changes will take time.

Abstract:
Civic education is an important part of the education of teens in Sweden. When reading high school textbooks of religious studies it is noticible that the use of civic education is lacking. This thesis examined three high school textbooks of religious studies in order to identify the shortcomings of civic education in textbooks. The major issue regarding civic education, according to the findings of this thesis, is the fact that traditional education, i.e. the transfer of knowledge, is the main purpose of these textbooks. As a result civic education is often included in textbooks as somewhat of an afterthought. The majority of the material included in textbooks seem to be primarily selected on the basis of what it contributes towards thegoals of traditional education, even if that material sometimes undermines the goals of civic education. The conclusion of this thesis is that civic education must become something that authors reflect upon as a conscious part of writing textbooks if the civic educational goals of the swedish educational system are to be achieved.

Abstract:
Abstract Today, too many construction projects are delayed and deviates from the budget. A good project management is the basis for successful construction project. The most common planning methods in the construction industry is currently Gantt chart and CPM. The problem with these is that focus is only at the time of the project and doesn’t handle the budget. A project management method which connects the time and cost is Earned Value Management. Earned Value Management enables calculations of different metrics for cost and time that can be used early to see trends in project implementation. The aim of our study is to describe the project managenment in the construction industry and to explain the criteria needed to implement project management methodology Earned Value Management in a construction company. The EVM is unproved at the construction company we chose to do a case study about. We have in a completed building projects in ByggSjögren in Halmstad, Sweden, examined the criteria that exist, and are required to apply Earned Value Management. Through interviews with Annarell Malmberg and Martin Bengtsson, responsible for calculations and purchase of ByggSjögren, and Insa Ostendorf, project manager at Ramböll, we were using the information they gave us to do our study. Based on empirical evidence and data we collected, we have made estimates and proposals for ByggSjögren could proceed at an implementation of Earned Value Management. We have from a completed project studied the criteria that exist today, and what is missing to be able to use Earned Value Management. Finally, we concluded that the criteria that are important to implement Earned Value Management in construction industry is particularly close monitoring. Much of what is included in the Earned Value Management is already being done today in many construction companies, but they have no name for it.

Heier, Elizabeth. "The Amenity Value of Trees: a Meta-analysis of Hedonic, Property-value Studies." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44418.

Full text
Abstract:
Tree species migration as a result of climate change may alter the composition of trees in local communities. Shifts in tree diversity, stand age, species predominance and the overall number of trees are potential changes. Community tree programs may also change the characteristics of local trees through planting or preservation efforts, but these programs may also mitigate the effects of climate induced tree migration. Numerous hedonic property value studies have estimated the implicit price of tree amenities associated with residential properties. Quantitative analysis of the results from multiple studies valuing trees can identify if the relationship between implicit price and tree amenities extended across these studies. The results of the meta-regression found systematic variation was present across positive implicit prices for local tree cover. The scarcity, age and type of local trees were also significantly related to the implicit price of amenity tree cover. The amenity tree cover findings suggest that county tree canopy cover of about 42% optimizes implicit price. Recent extreme weather events and ownership of trees contributed to negative implicit prices. These results may assist in planning and goal setting for community tree programs to mitigate the effects of climate induced tree migration.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents the case of Ms. Suzuki, a modest Japanese woman who had worked as a clerk for more than 20 years. After she was promoted at age 43, she found herself unable to adapt properly to her management position because it required assertiveness and leadership. She saw a psychiatrist following her supervisor’s advice. She had some of the symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD), but it was uncertain whether she met the diagnostic criteria. To elucidate the considerations involved before initiating or refraining from pharmacotherapy, I refer to the ethical debates on neuroenhancement. First, medication would spoil her authenticity, because her modesty is part of her virtue. Second, medicating a person seeing a psychiatrist at her boss’s instigation might constitute a milder form of coercive treatment. Third, diagnosing Ms. Suzuki with SAD seems to endorse her company’s culture, whereas denying her disorder status would affirm Japanese culture’s oppressiveness toward women. When a case lies on the border between normality and pathology, relying on the psychiatric diagnosis for ethical guidance disguises value judgments for matters of fact. Therefore, we should explicitly state the conflicting values and the cultural influences on them to make better clinical decisions.

Abstract 'Quality' of greenhouse and hydroponic produce implies suitability for a particular purpose or the degree to which certain set standards are met. Aspects of produce quality may encompass sensory properties (appearance, texture, taste and aroma), nutritive values, chemical constituents, mechanical properties, functional properties and defects. Quality standards and testing methods have been developed for most commercial crops to help ensure consumers receive produce of a suitable standard. These quality standards can range from basic grading for removal of damaged produce and for size, shape, weight and overall appearance, to analytical testing for compositional factors such as acidity, volatiles, dry matter, starch and sugars, toxins, vitamins and minerals, and others. This chapter discusses the components of crop quality, quality improvement, cultural practices to improve greenhouse produce quality (nutrient solution electrical conductivity levels, salinity and deficit irrigation), environmental conditions (including light and temperature) affecting quality of greenhouse crops, role of genetics in the quality of greenhouse-grown produce, microbial quality and food safety. Different quality testing and grading methods are described such as colour analysis, total soluble solids (Brix) testing, sensory evaluation of compositional quality, volatiles testing (aroma), texture and firmness quality assessment.

Abstract:
Estimation of high return period values of wind and wave conditions is usually done using a limited sample of data from measurement or hindcast studies. Because a finite sample size is used, the reliability of estimates is usually evaluated by constructing confidence intervals around design values such as the 100 year return value. In this paper, a numerical simulation study is used to compare the accuracy of calculated confidence intervals using several different calculation methods: the asymptotic normal, parametric bootstrap and profile likelihood methods. The accuracy of each method for different sample sizes is assessed for the truncated Weibull distribution. Based on these results, a profile likelihood method for estimation of confidence intervals is suggested for use when dealing with small datasets.

Abstract An approach is presented for the vibration analysis of annular, confocal, elliptic plate. The approach employs the separation of variables, finite difference, and receptance concept. This method is then expanded to square plate with center crack, or with more complex geometries. The basic idea of this paper is: split the plate into several strips and get the strips’ characteristic values, then compose these strips by the receptance method to get the characteristics value of the plate. Numerical results for certain cases are compared to known data, and precise agreement is met.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, an alternate framework for deployment called Concurrent Function Deployment (CFD) for managing a product’s life-cycle process is described. The framework considers parallel deployment of several value characteristics as opposed to a single value such as Quality. The American Supplier Institute’s (ASI’s) quality function deployment (QFD) concept [Sullivan, 1988] is a typical case of a conventional four-phased deployment process, where quality is the prime consideration for deploying life cycle functions. CFD is not based on using a single measurement, such as “Quality“ as in ASI’s QFD. Six concurrent values, namely Functionality (Quality), Performance (X-ability), Tools & Technology (innovation), Cost, Responsiveness, and Infrastructure (delivery) are considered simultaneously in CFD rather than serially in QFD. Three-dimensional Value Characteristics Matrices (VCM) are employed to ensure that both the company and the customers’ goals are optimally met. In the present setting, ASI’s deployment scenario emerges as a special case of Concurrent Function Deployment. CFD enables the planners and strategic decision-makers — early on during a design process — to deal with tradeoffs among the crucial factors of artifact values.

Abstract:
This paper presents an analysis of a planar tensegrity-based mechanism. In this study, a moving body is joined to ground by four compliant leg connectors. Each leg connector is comprised of a spring in series with an adjustable length piston. Two problems are solved in this paper. In the first, the values of the four spring constants and free lengths are given and the lengths of the four pistons are determined such that: (1) the top body is positioned and oriented at a desired pose; (2) the top body is at equilibrium while a specified external wrench is applied; and (3) the total potential energy stored in the four springs equals some desired value. In the second problem, the values for the four spring free lengths are given and the values for the four spring constants and the lengths of the four pistons are determined such that conditions (1) and (2) from above are met and also the instantaneous stiffness matrix of the top body equals a specified set of matrix values. The paper formulates the solutions of these two problems. Numerical examples are presented.

Abstract:
The extreme values of climate data are of interest in design of marine structures and the return values of certain met-ocean parameters such as significant wave height is of particular importance. However, there are various ways of analyzing the extremes and estimating the required return values, which introduce additional uncertainties. These are investigated in this paper by applying different methods to particular data sets of significant wave height, corresponding to the historic climate and two future projections of the climate assuming different forcing scenarios. In this way, the uncertainty due to the extreme value analysis can also be compared to the uncertainty due to a changing climate. The different approaches that will be considered is the initial distribution approach, the block maxima approach, the peak over threshold (POT) approach and the average conditional exceedance rate method (ACER). Furthermore, the effect of different modelling choices within each of the approaches will be explored. Thus, a range of different return value estimates for the different data sets is obtained. This exercise reveals that the uncertainty due to the extreme value analysis method is notable and, as expected, the variability of the estimates increases for higher return periods. Moreover, even though the variability due to the extreme value analysis is greater than the climate variability, a shift towards higher extremes in a future wave climate can clearly be discerned in the particular datasets that have been analysed.

Abstract:
Accurate prediction of near surface wind and wave height are important for many offshore activities like fishing, boating, surfing, installation and maintenance of marine structures. The current work investigates the use of different methodologies to make accurate predictions of significant wave height and local wind. The methodology consists of coupling an atmospheric code HARMONIE and a wave model WAM. Two different kinds of coupling methodologies: unidirectional and bidirectional coupling are tested. While in Unidirectional coupling only the effects of atmosphere on ocean surface are taken into account, in bidirectional coupling the effects of ocean surface on the atmosphere are also accounted for. The predicted values of wave height and local wind at 10m above the ocean surface using both the methodologies are compared against observation data. The results show that during windy conditions, a bidirectional coupling methodology has better prediction capability.

Abstract:
In this paper we use ecology metrics to analyze closed loop manufacturing networks, specifically eco-industrial parks. Eco-industrial parks (EIP) have become a popular manifestation of sustainable initiatives around the world. EIP examples and proposals have met with varying success. We create here three groupings of industrial networks based on the values of cyclicity, a metric used by ecologists to classify the presence and strength of the structural cycling of materials and energy in a system. Ecological food web structures are naturally evolved closed-loop systems and as such exhibit relatively high cyclicity values. Comparing average biological values for cyclicity, among other metrics, to average values for industrial systems we may begin to reach conclusions on the success of the biological inspiration of these structures. The industrial networks have been grouped into industrial systems with cyclicity values of zero, industrial systems with very high cyclicity values which have not moved beyond the proposal stage, and cyclicity values for those industrial networks which have been successful. The results of these comparisons give insight into what structural properties eco-industrial parks should possibly focus on to better imitate the efficient and sustainable cycling representative of biological networks.

Full text
Abstract:
Knowledge uncertainties result from limitations of the data and other information required to define parameters that are used in estimating reliability with respect to a given failure threat. The parameters affected typically represent distribution parameters of input random variables used in the calculation; for example, the mean corrosion growth rate for a given pipeline segment. Knowledge uncertainties are distinct from randomness, which is typically manifested in variations in the basic input parameters affecting a given limit state; for example, variations in the excavator force applied to the pipeline in different impact events. Randomness is reflected in the probability distributions used to model the input variables affected and is automatically built into the reliability estimate. However, the reliability estimate is conditional on the values used for parameters affected by knowledge uncertainty. Since these parameters can take a range of values with different probabilities, knowledge uncertainty is best represented as a distribution or confidence interval on the calculated failure probability. Two approaches are proposed to deal with knowledge uncertainties in Reliability Based Design and Assessment (RBDA) applications in which design and operational choices are accepted if they meet a specified reliability target. The first is a formal approach in which reliability targets must be met with a specified level of confidence (e.g. meet the reliability targets with 90% confidence). The second approach is an informal one in which a single conservative value is used for each parameter affected by knowledge uncertainties. Although this approach relies on the judgment of the user, it has the advantage of being simple. In the context of standardizing RBDA, it is recommended that epistemic uncertainty be identified as an important issue that must be considered in demonstrating compliance. It is also recommended that both formal and informal approaches be permitted as viable means of accounting for epistemic uncertainty. The informal approach should be included as a minimum requirement, whereas the formal approach should be presented as an option. This recommended strategy addresses epistemic uncertainty without creating a significant obstacle to the application of RBDA.

Full text
Abstract:
The U.S. national parks have experienced significant climate-change impacts and rapid, on-going changes are expected to continue. Despite the significant climate-change vulnerabilities facing parks, relatively few parks have conducted comprehensive climate-change vulnerability assessments, defined as assessments that synthesize vulnerability information from a wide range of sources, identify key climate-change impacts, and prioritize vulnerable park resources (Michalak et al. In review). In recognition that funding and planning capacity is limited, this project was initiated to identify geographies, parks, and issues that are high priorities for conducting climate-change vulnerability assessments (CCVA) and strategies to efficiently address the need for CCVAs across all U.S. National Park Service (NPS) park units (hereafter “parks”) and all resources. To help identify priority geographies and issues, we quantitatively assessed the relative magnitude of vulnerability factors potentially affecting park resources and values. We identified multiple vulnerability factors (e.g., temperature change, wildfire potential, number of at-risk species, etc.) and sought existing datasets that could be developed into indicators of these factors. To be included in the study, datasets had to be spatially explicit or already summarized for individual parks and provide consistent data for at least all parks within the contiguous U.S. (CONUS). The need for consistent data across such a large geographic extent limited the number of datasets that could be included, excluded some important drivers of climate-change vulnerability, and prevented adequate evaluation of some geographies. The lack of adequately-scaled data for many key vulnerability factors, such as freshwater flooding risks and increased storm activity, highlights the need for both data development and more detailed vulnerability assessments at local to regional scales where data for these factors may be available. In addition, most of the available data at this scale were related to climate-change exposures, with relatively little data available for factors associated with climate-change sensitivity or adaptive capacity. In particular, we lacked consistent data on the distribution or abundance of cultural resources or accessible data on infrastructure across all parks. We identified resource types, geographies, and critical vulnerability factors that lacked data for NPS’ consideration in addressing data gaps. Forty-seven indicators met our criteria, and these were combined into 21 climate-change vulnerability factors. Twenty-seven indicators representing 12 vulnerability factors addressed climate-change exposure (i.e., projected changes in climate conditions and impacts). A smaller number of indictors measured sensitivity (12 indicators representing 5 vulnerability factors). The sensitivity indicators often measured park or landscape characteristics which may make resources more or less responsive to climate changes (e.g., current air quality) as opposed to directly representing the sensitivity of specific resources within the park (e.g., a particular rare species or type of historical structure). Finally, 6 indicators representing 4 vulnerability factors measured external adaptive capacity for living resources (i.e., characteristics of the park and/or surrounding landscape which may facilitate or impede species adaptation to climate changes). We identified indicators relevant to three resource groups: terrestrial living, aquatic living (including living cultural resources such as culturally significant landscapes, plant, or animal species) and non-living resources (including infrastructure and non-living cultural resources such as historic buildings or archeological sites). We created separate indicator lists for each of these resource groups and analyzed them separately. To identify priority geographies within CONUS,...

Abstract:
This study evaluates the demand for truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways with owner–operator truck drivers. The study implemented the stated preference survey method to estimate the value placed by drivers on time, reliability, and safety measures using various scenarios geared towards assessing those values. The project team met face-to-face with owner- operator truck drivers near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to understand the drivers’ perspectives regarding truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways. A data set containing 31 survey responses is obtained and used for statistical data analysis using analysis of variable (ANOVA) and two sample t-tests. The analysis results showed that 75.27% of the owner– operator truck drivers responded are willing to pay toll fees when they choose routes. The tolerated average toll fees are $13.77/ hr and $12.82/hr for weekdays and weekends, respectively. The analysis results also showed that owner–operator truck drivers will take truck-only toll lanes when they take the routes used in four comparisons out of six comparisons according to the three measures such as values of time, reliability, and safety, despite sharing a common origin and destination. The highest toll fee per mile on any day that drivers are willing to pay when the main factor being compared is value of time is $0.31/mile or $18.35/hr. The toll fees associated with reliability and safety measures are $0.30/mile or $8.94/hr and $0.22/mile or $11.01/hr, respectively. These results are meaningful for legislators and transportation agencies as the behaviors and route choice characteristics of owner–operator truck drivers help them better understand the utility and demand for truck-only toll lanes.

Abstract:
A growing body of scholarly literature has attempted to measure and value unpaid care work in various countries, but perhaps only the government statistical agencies in the United States and the United Kingdom have seriously undertaken periodic and systematic measures of the time spent on unpaid work at the national level, and partially incorporated those values into their gross domestic product(GDP). One country that has been ahead of its time on aspects of societal welfare measurement is Bhutan, which produces the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index. However, until the first GNH Survey, in 2008, Bhutan did not have any sense of the size and distribution of unpaid work, despite its strong societal norms about the value of volunteering and community work. This paper is the first to estimate the value of unpaid care work in Bhutan. It shows the pros and cons of various approaches and their equivalent measures of unpaid care work as a share of GDP. As with similar studies on the topic, this paper also finds that women spend more than twice as much time as men performing unpaid care work, regardless of their income, age, residency, or number of people in the household. The paper also provides recommendations for improving the measurement of unpaid care work in Bhutan.
