Full textCochlear implants are electronic devices implanted in the ear, which can give children with severe to profound hearing loss, access to sound and the opportunity to aquire spoken language. Such implants are achieved via a delicate surgical procedure, followed by an intensive rehabilitation program. Parents are intimately involved in this entire process and play a pivotal role in terms of decision-making, the surgery and the child’s language development. Research has shown that this procedure causes increased stress levels in parents, as well as an initial experience of mixed emotions. They also have to consider that some cochlear implants are not successful and thus do not provide all children with access to sound and the possibility of learning spoken language. Parents’ first contact with professional services/persons is generally doctors, ear, nose and throat specialists, audiologists, speech therapists and social workers. Further research shows that the relationship between such professionals and parents is not always satisfactory. As mothers often work closest with professionals, the following research questions arose: How do mothers experience the emotional support they receive during the diagnosis, implantation procedure and rehabilitation, and what are their emotional needs during this time? Because of a lack of literature concerning the role of educational psychologists in this process, a third question arose: What role can the educational psychologist play during the diagnosis of deafness and the cochlear implant process? The purpose of this generic qualitative study, therefore, was to analyze, describe and explain the experience of eight mothers of children with cochlear implants, with regard to support and support needs. The study was conducted within the interpretive paradigm, which guided the qualitative research design. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews. The interview data were transcribed and analyzed. The data analysis was done by using aspects of grounded theory. The findings show that mothers’ experiences of the process were unique, as the situation of each family differed. The eight mothers’ needs for emotional support also differed because of their unique experiences. Furthermore, a lack of support to parents after the rehabilitation process, just before children start primary school, was identified, and it was established that the educational psychologist can play a role in this phase and transition phases. Recommendations were made to improve the support mothers receive from professional services or people.

Considering the diversity of theories available on the treatment of metaphor, we have two methodological options of study: either we approach it under the foundations of one area and analyze the object from the constructed properties within the scope of the approach; or we construct an interface repackaging, in which we put into play complex properties that delimit a third object built on the borderlines of disciplines in dialogue (CAMPOS, 2007). In the study that we propose, we illustrate this second approach, putting into dialogue the foundations of Linguistics, especially Pragmatics - via Grice's Theory of Implicatures (1967; 1975) and via Relevance Theory, by Sperber and Wilson (1986; 2008) and Wilson and Sperber, (2012) - and Psicolinguistics (GLUCKSBERG et al., 2007; BOWDLE and GENTNER, 2005), on the one hand; and, on the other, Neuroscience, through a qualitative meta-analysis constructed by the study of twenty fMRI experiments, from which the circuitry of the neurological processing of the metaphor is described. In this meta-analysis, we have tried to elucidate the nature of the theoretical approach and its implications in the design of the experiments and in the results achieved, in order to collect elements to compose the meta-theoretical approach of the interface that we proposed. In a second moment, then, we elevate the properties constructed in the scope of each area to the condition of meta-theoretical properties of the metaphor, with the purpose of putting into dialogue theories with distinct granularity and of proposing an alternative to the mapping problem (POEPPEL, 2012) resulting from a study of this nature. We thus have constructed a third, more complex object by deepening the descriptive and explanatory potential of the treatment given to the metaphor. Therefore, we see that, from an interface approach, two consequences emerge: the first, epistemological, because we contribute in the debate about the properties of the metaphor theories in interface, from whose dialogue the revitalization of the foundations in dialogue results; the second, theoretical, because we also contribute to the debate about the properties of the metaphor itself. The proposed interface emphasizes the potential of such approaches by extending possibilities for new treatments of different objects of linguistic research, including the metaphor itself.
Considerando a diversidade de teorias que temos ? disposi??o sobre o tratamento da met?fora, temos duas op??es metodol?gicas de estudo: ou a abordamos sob os fundamentos de uma ?rea e analisamos o objeto a partir das propriedades constru?das dentro do escopo da abordagem; ou constru?mos uma roupagem de interface, em que colocamos em jogo propriedades complexas que delimitam um objeto terceiro constru?do nas fronteiras das disciplinas em di?logo (CAMPOS, 2007). No estudo que propomos, ilustramos essa segunda abordagem, colocando em di?logo fundamentos da Lingu?stica, em especial da Pragm?tica ? via Teoria das Implicaturas de Grice (1967; 1975) e via Teoria da Relev?ncia, de Sperber e Wilson (1986; 2008) e Wilson e Sperber, (2012) ? e da Psicolingu?stica (GLUCKSBERG et al., 2007; BOWDLE e GENTNER, 2005), de um lado; e, de outro, da Neuroci?ncia, por meio de uma meta-an?lise qualitativa constru?da pelo estudo de vinte experimentos com fMRI, a partir dos quais descreve-se a circuitaria do processamento neurol?gico da met?fora. Nessa meta-an?lise, procuramos elucidar a natureza da abordagem te?rica e suas implica??es no design dos experimentos e nos resultados alcan?ados, no intuito de recolhermos elementos para compor a abordagem metate?rica da interface que propusemos. Num segundo momento, ent?o, al?amos ? condi??o de propriedades metate?ricas da met?fora as propriedades constru?das no escopo de cada ?rea, com o prop?sito de colocar em di?logo teorias com granularidade distinta e de propor uma alternativa ao mapping problem (POEPPEL, 2012) decorrente de um estudo dessa natureza. Constru?mos, assim, um objeto terceiro, mais complexo, ao aprofundarmos o potencial descritivo e explanat?rio do tratamento dado ? met?fora. Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The interaction between people and their natural environment, as well as the manner in which it occurs, is of a complex nature. The sustainable use of natural resources should be strived for and our guideline should be sustainable development. A common phenomenon in low cost housing projects in South Africa is the dependency on the natural environment and the over-utilization of resources. Numerous poor rural and urban communities do not have the opportunity to think about this over-utilization, as their first priority is that of survival. Resource allocation in South Africa reflects a pattern of uneven distribution. In housing development the less fortunate are placed in poor ecological areas where the quality of the environment can scarcely maintain the minimum standard of living. This inequality not only hinders the promotion of a stable ecological basis, but also prevents nation-wide sustainable development. Due to this, the connection between poverty and ecology were made an environmental priority. The importance of integrating the environment and development, to achieve environmental sustainability, is acknowledged and therefore greater emphasis is placed on sustainable development. In this study an attempt is made to determine how natural environmental sustainability can be ensured with low cost housing development. In the process an evaluation instrument, consisting of three components, namely the principles of sustainable I development; natural environmental indicators for sustainable low cost housing development; and socio-economic indicators for sustainable low cost housing development, are designed to try to reconcile the natural environment and development through the phenomenon of sustainable development. An extensive literature study of relevant published and unpublished literature was done and forms the basis of this research study. A research survey, done by the University of Stellenbosch about the case study of Wesbank, and of which the researcher was part, is also utilised in this study.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die interaksie tussen mense en hulle natuurlike omgewing, asook die manier waarop dit geskied, is van 'n komplekse aard. Daar moet gestreef word na die volhoubare benutting van natuurlike hulpbronne, en ons rigsnoer behoort volhoubare ontwikkeling te wees. In talle laekostebehuisingontwikkelings in Suid-Afrika is 'n algemeen waarneembare verskynsel die afhanklikheid op die natuurlike omgewing en die oorbenutting van hulpbronne. Baie arm landelike en stedelike gemeenskappe het nie die geleentheid om oor hierdie oorbenutting na te dink nie, aangesien hul eerste prioriteit dié van oorlewing is. Suid-Afrika se hulpbron-toewysing retklekteer 'n patroon van ongelyke verspreiding. Die minder bevoorregtes word, in behuisingontwikkeling, in ekologiese swak areas geplaas waar die kwaliteit van die omgewing skaars die minimum lewensstandaarde kan volhou. Hierdie ongelykhede bemoeilik nie slegs die bevordering van 'n stabiele ekologiese basis nie, dit verhoed ook landswye volhoubare ontwikkeling, en daarom is die verband tussen armoede en ekologie 'n omgewingsprioriteit. In die proses gaan 'n beoordelingsinstrument bestaande uit drie komponente, naamlik: die beginsels van volhoubare ontwikkeling; natuurlike omgewingsindikatore vir volhoubare laekostebehuisingontwikkeling; en sosio-ekonomiese indikatore vir volhoubare laekostebehuisingontwikkeling, ontwerp word om sodoende te probeer om die natuurlike omgewing en ontwikkeling te versoen deur die verskynsel van volhoubare ontwikkeling. 'n Ekstensiewe literatuurstudie van relevante gepubliseerde en ongepubliseerde literatuur is gedoen en maak die basis van die navorsingstudie uit. Full textAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In 1990 het H.S. Spies navorsing gedoen oor die praktyk en toekoms van die NG kerk in Parow. Sy bevinding was dat die NG kerk in Parow se lidmaattalle teen ʼn baie vinnige tempo daal en dat heelwat van die gemeentes nie finansieël sal oorleef nie. Hy het voorgestel dat daar ʼn paradigma skuif moet kom in die wyse waarop gemeentes funksioneer in die Ring. Hierdie studie som Spies se studie-bevindinge op en bespreek die reaksie van die geestelike leiers in Parow daarop. Dit vra die vraag waarom die Ring van Parow nie daarin kon slaag om die uitdagings van demografiese veranderinge in Parow aan te spreek oor die periode van twintig jaar nie. Die Ring van Parow het groot erns gemaak met die bevindinge van Spies se studie en het beplanning gedoen om die uitdaging van demografiese verandering in Parow aan te spreek. Hulle het voorstelle ontwikkel wat daarop neerkom dat die gemeentes in die Parow Ring moet saamsmelt in een groot makro-gemeente. Dit het nooit gebeur nie en die situasie het bly versleg. Slegs ses gemeentes uit die twaalf wat in 1990 bestaan het, is nog onafhanklik. Ses gemeentes het vanweë finansiële druk met ander gemeentes saamgesmelt in die periode tussen 1990 en 2002. Die omgewing het demografies baie verander en daar woon meer mense as ooit tevore in Parow, maar dit is nie tradisionele wit, Afrikaans sprekende, NG kerkmense nie. Die studie bespreek ook die wyer konteks van verandering waarin die gebeure in Parow Ring afspeel, naamlik, globalisasie, post modernisme en post Christendom. Dit toon aan dat die kennis, gedrag en gewoontes wat die leiers in 'n vorige periode aangeleer het, nie genoegsaam is vir die uitdagings van die veranderinge. Die studie beskryf twee paradigmaskuiwe wat kan help om 'n nuwe ekklesiologiese praktyk in Parow te bevorder. Die eerste paradigmaskuif hang saam met nuwe teologiese insigte wat die afgelope sestig jaar ontwikkel het rondom die begrip missio Dei. Die tweede paradigmaskuif wat in die studie uitgelig word, het te doen met vaardighede van geestelike leiers in die hantering van verandering. Die studie se uitgangspunt is dat die veld en wêreld waarin geestelike leiers moet optree sodanig verander het, dat daar net een manier is om dit te hanteer en dit is die transformasie van die geestelike leiers se eie voorveronderstellings, kennis, idees en praktyke. Die ontluikende leierskapsvaardigheid waardeur ons leer om transformerend aan te pas by die veranderinge deur in pas te kom met missio Dei, is geloofsonderskeiding. Geestelike leiers moet geloofsonderskeiding as leierskapvaardigheid aanleer en gemeentepraktyk maak, omdat dit die wyse is waarop die geloofsgemeenskap vanuit luister en doen-spasies, na die wêreld gelei word om daar saam met missio Dei te werk. Dit is in luisterende, gehoorsame doen-spasies, en in groeiende bewussyn van die teenwoordigheid van Triniteit, waar transformasie van die geloofsgemeenskap plaasvind. Die fenomenologiese beskrywing deur Otto Scharmer van wat hy noem die ontluikende leierskapsvaardigheid van 'presencing' help om die proses van geloofsonderskeiding beter te begryp. Die studie eindig met drie nuwe hipoteses.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In 1990 H.S. Spies did research on the praxis and future of the DRC churches in Parow. He found that the membership of the DRC in Parow was declining at a very fast rate and that many congregations would not survive financially. He proposed that a new paradigm was needed for the ministry in Parow. This study makes a summary of his thesis and discusses the reaction of the leaders in Parow on his study. It asks the question why the Circuit of Parow could not in their context address the challenge of changing demographics over a period of twenty years. The Circuit of Parow took the findings of Spies very serious and planned to address the challenge of changing demographics in Parow. Their proposal founds its culmination in the idea that all the Parow congregations must become one big mega-church. It never became a reality and the situation worsened. In fact, only six of the twelve congregations that exist in 1990 are still independent and alive. The other six congregations dissolved and became part of stronger congregations between 1990 and 2002. The area of Parow has changed demographically. There are more people living in the area, but it is not traditional white, Afrikaner, DRC, people. The congregations in the circuit could not cross the borders of race, colour, language and culture to include others. This study also discusses the wider context in which the story of Parow is playing out, namely the three storms of change, globalisation, post modernism and post Christianity. The knowledge, habits and actions that the leaders employed in the past are not helpful in the changing world. The study describes two paradigm shifts that are taking place in the church that could help to develop a new ecclesiological practice in Parow. The first paradigm shift relates closely with the theological insights that developed in the past sixty years around the concept of missio Dei. The second paradigm shift that is brought forward in this study relates with the skills of spiritual leaders in managing change. The study maintain, that in light of the changes in the world and the field in which spiritual leaders operate, the only way to handle the new challenges is by the transformation of the spiritual leader‘s own pre-conceptions, knowledge, ideas and practices. The leadership ability, by which we learn to understand how God is already present in the world according to the insights of missio Dei, is faith discernment. Discernment is the process whereby Christians step into listening and doing spaces as a faith community. Spiritual leaders will have to learn discernment and how to make it an ecclesiological practice. It is in the listening and doing spaces and in growing consciousness of the presence of Trinity, where transformation of the faith community takes place. The phenomenological description by Otto Scharmer of what he calls the new leadership skill of 'presencing' helps to understand the process of faith discernment better. The study ends with three new hipotheses.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was undertaken to explore the challenges that foster parents experience when a child with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is placed in their care. Given the intensive care and various support needs, the question is whether foster parents are equipped to care for these children. This is an exploratory study that also explores the current service delivery relationship between foster parents and social workers. This study posed two research questions, namely what the challenges are that foster parents of children with FAS face and what their experiences with social support are. The sample population for the qualitative case study was two foster parents with children with FAS. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews. The following themes were identified in the study: initiation as foster carers, motives for foster care, recruitment and training of foster care parents and services to foster parents. The findings of the study suggest that, in addition to financial support, foster parents express the need for emotional support, training on how to foster children with FAS as well as knowledge about the disability.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is onderneem om ondersoek in te stel na die uitdagings wat pleegouers ervaar wanneer ʼn kind met Fetale Alkohol Spektrum Versteuring (FASV) in hulle sorg geplaas word. Die vraag is of pleegouers opgewasse is om hierdie kinders te versorg, gegewe die intensiewe versorging en diverse ondersteuningsbehoeftes wat hulle benodig. Die verkennende studie ondersoek ook die huidige diensleweringverhouding tussen pleegouers en maatskaplike werkers. Die studie is gerig deur twee navorsingsvrae, naamlik watter uitdagings pleegouers met FAS kinders beleef en watter ervaringe pleegouers ten opsigte van maatskaplike ondersteuning beleef. Die steekproef populasie vir die kwalitatiewe gevallestudie was twee pleegouers van kinders met FAS. Data is deurmiddel van semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude versamel. Die volgende temas is geïdentifiseer: aanvang van pleegsorg, die redes vir pleegsorg, werwing en opleiding van pleegouers en dienslewering aan pleegouers. Die bevindinge van die studie dui daarop dat behalwe finansiële ondersteuning pleegouers ook ʼn behoefte aan emosionele ondersteuning, opleiding oor hoe om kinders met FAS te vesorg en kundigheid oor die gestremdheid benodig.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterised by impulsiveness, an inability to maintain attention and hyperactive behaviour. The presence of a child with ADHD is a stressor that has a significant impact on family adaptation. The purpose of this study was to identify associations between parenting styles, coping strategies and the adaptation of families with children with ADHD from a family resilience perspective. Family resilience refers to the ability of a family to re-evaluate challenging life situations or stressors in such a manner as to develop resilience, so that the family adapts, recovers and becomes stronger as a result of the experience. Some 102 South African families with previously diagnosed children with ADHD between the ages of 5 and 13 years participated in this study. A single cross-sectional research method was used. Quantitative data was collected by means of a biographical questionnaire and three self rapporting questionnaires. The results of this study confirmed existing theories and previous research of a similar nature. The Pearson correlation coefficient analysis revealed strong positive correlations between dimensions of the authoritative parenting style (connection, autonomy granting and regulation) and of re-evaluation and mobilisation (as coping strategies). The authoritative parenting style also correlates strongly with family adaptation. The three dimensions of the authoritarian parenting style (physical coercion, verbal hostility, and non-reasoning) have a strong negative correlation with family adaptation. Physical coercion also has a positive correlation with the coping strategy looking for spiritual support. The coping strategy passivity, in turn, showed a negative correlation with the authoritarian parenting style. Also the permissive parenting style correlates negatively with the coping strategy re-evaluation and passivity, while it also correlates negatively with family adaptation. A regression analysis further revealed medication, connection and regulation (as dimensions of the authoritative parenting style) as the best subset predictable variables, with family adaptation as the dependent variable. A mixed repetitive model with ANOVA-measures was used to identify differences between parents. Mothers obtained higher scores for connection, autonomy granting and authoritative parenting than fathers. The biographical data generally supported previous research findings. There was a strong genetic link between parents and children with ADHD (51% of parents also indicated that they were diagnosed with ADHD), 78% of the children used medication and 34% of the children had co-morbid conditions. The findings of this study fill a gap in the literature about the impact of parenting styles and coping strategies on the adaptation of families with children with ADHD. Further research is urgently needed to help South African parents of children with ADHD learn productive coping styles in order to improve family adaptation.

Die doel van hierdie studie was om verbande te ondersoek tussen ouerskapstyle, hanteringstrategieë en die aanpassing van gesinne met kinders met AT/HV vanuit 'n gesinsveerkragtigheidsperspektief. Gesinsveerkragtigheid verwys na 'n gesin se vermoë om uitdagende lewenssituasies of stressors op só 'n manier te herbeoordeel dat weerstandigheid gekweek word en dat die gesin aanpas, herstel en versterk word deur die ervaring. Altesaam 102 Suid-Afrikaanse gesinne met vooraf gediagnoseerde kinders met AT/HV tussen die ouderdom van 5 en 13 jaar het aan die studie deelgeneem. 'n Eenmalige dwarssnitopname-navorsingsontwerp is gebruik. Kwantitatiewe data is ingesamel met behulp van ’n biografiese vraelys en drie selfvoltooiingsvraelyste. Resultate van die onderhawige ondersoek bevestig bestaande teorieë en soortgelyke vorige navorsing. Pearson korrellasiekoëffisiëntontledings dui op sterk positiewe korrelasies tussen dimensies van die gesaghebbende ouerskapstyl (konneksie, outonomie-gewendheid en regulering) en herbeoordeling en mobilisering (as hanteringstyl). Die gesaghebbende ouerskapstyl korreleer ook sterk met gesinsaanpassing. Die outoritêre ouerskapstyl se drie dimensies - fisieke forsering, verbale vyandigheid en geen verduideliking - het 'n sterk negatiewe statisties beduidende korrelasie met gesinsaanpassing getoon. Fisieke forsering het ook 'n positiewe korrelasie getoon met die hanteringstyl soeke na spirituele ondersteuning. Die hanteringstyl passiwiteit het weer 'n negatiewe korrelasie getoon met die outoritêre ouerskapstyl. Ook die permissiewe ouerskapstyl het negatiewe korrelasies getoon met die hanteringstyle herbeoordeling en passiwiteit terwyl dit ook negatief gekorreleer het met gesinsaanpassing. 'n Regressie-ontleding het medikasie, konneksie en regulering (as dimensies van die gesaghebbende ouerskapstyl) as die beste substel voorspellerveranderlikes uitgewys met gesinsaanpassing as die afhanklike veranderlike. 'n Gemengde-herhalingsmodel met ANOVA-metings is gebruik om geslagsverskille tussen ouers te ondersoek. Geslagsverskille tussen ma's en pa's het daarop gedui dat ma's hoër tellings behaal het vir konneksie, outonomie-gewendheid en die gesaghebbende ouerskapstyl as pa's. Die biografiese data het meestal vorige navorsingsbevindinge ondersteun. Daar is 'n sterk genetiese band gevind tussen ouers en kinders met AT/HV (51% van ouers het ook aangedui dat hulle met AT/HV gediagnoseer is), 78% van die kinders het medikasie gebruik en 34% van die kinders het ko-morbiede toestande gehad. Die bevindinge van hierdie ondersoek vul ’n leemte in die literatuur oor die verband tussen ouerskapstyle en hanteringstrategieë en die aanpassing van gesinne met kinders met AT/HV. Verdere navorsing word dringend benodig om Suid-Afrikaanse ouers met kinders met AT/HV te help om 'n goed-georkestreerde ondersteuningsnetwerk te ontwikkel wat ouers, die kinders self, die gesin in sy geheel en hierdie kinders se funksionering binne skole te kan bystaan.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to identify and enhance specific resilience qualities within families having a child with a learning disability. The study was devided into two phases, namely the descriptive phase, which aimed to identify resilience qualities that enhance family adaptation in these families and an the intervention phase, which aimed to develop, implement and evaluate an intervention programme that enhances the utilization of family time and family routine, important qualities identified in the descriptive phase of this study. The study was essentially exploratory and descriptive in nature and directed to develop scientific knowledge and theory in the field of family resilience. The family system theory (Minuchin, 1974), serves as the theoretical departure point to determine the processes, factors and dynamics underlying the impact of learning disability on the family, while the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1996, 2001) was operationalised to measure resilience qualities in terms of stressors, risk, protective factors and familiy adaptation. The 110 participants in the descriptive phase were identified according to the nature of the crisis (learning disability). The study focused mainly on families residing in the Western Cape, South Africa. Quantitative and qualitative measures of investigation were used for data collection. The quantitative results were predomently analysed according to correlation and regression analyses techniques, while the qualitative data was categorized according to themes and frequencies using content analysis. Twenty one of the 24 measured independent variables positively related to the dependent variable (family adjustment). The independent variables which related positively to the dependent variable included: family time and family routine, child routines, couple togetherness, sharing meals together, parent-child togetherness, relative connection, family chores, family management , family hardiness, family commitment, family challenges, locus of control, availability and mobilizing of community sources, faith, problemsolving skills and family communication. A randomized pretest-post test control group design was applied during the intervention phase of the study. The 47 participants were identified in the initial phase of the study. Data was again collected using quantitative and qualitative measures and was analysed using repeated measures of variance analysis, post-hoc Fisher Least Significant Differece analysis and content theory analysis. The results of the intervention phase indicated statistically significant change in family adaptation following the implementation of the workshop. The results implicated that the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1996; 2001) may be used to map (outline) variables that are associated with family adjustment within families with a child with learning disabilites. The study opens new opportunities and possibilties for further research. Resilience factors are identified which promote family adaptation and an intervention programme was developed which can be adapted by other professionals wishing to initiate similar services. The value of such a proactive, well being orientated perpective is important within the South African context where sources and studies regarding family resilience factors and suitable intervention programmes, which involves families at risk, are limited.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie studie was om veerkragtigheidskwaliteite in gesinne met ʼn kind met ʼn leergestremdheid te identifiseer en te bevorder. Die studie bestaan uit ʼn beskrywende fase, waar veerkragtigheidsfaktore geïdentifiseer is, en ʼn intervensiefase. Die doel met die intervensiefase was om ʼn program te ontwikkel en te evalueer waartydens een van die geïdentifiseerde veerkragtigheidsfaktore verder ontwikkel is ten einde gesinsaanpassing binne dié gesinne te verbeter. Gesinstyd en gesinsroetine is in die huidige studie as die veerkragtigheidsfaktor geïdentifiseer om gesinne met ʼn kind met ʼn leergestremdheid by te staan met die aanpassingsproses. Hierdie studie was verkennend en beskrywend van aard en daarop gerig om by te dra tot wetenskaplike kennis oor gesinsveerkragtigheid. Gesinsisteemteorie (Minuchin,1974) dien as teoretiese vertrekpunt om die prosesse, faktore en dinamika wat verband hou met ʼn kind met ʼn leergestremdheid in ʼn gesin te verstaan, terwyl die Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1996, 2001) geoperasionaliseer is om veerkragtigheidskenmerke te identifiseer in terme van stressors, risiko’s, beskermende faktore en gesinsaanpassing. Die 110 gesinne wat aan die beskrywende fase deelgeneem het, is op grond van die aard van die krisis (leergestremdheid) geïdentifiseer. In die studie is gesinne met ʼn kind met ʼn leergestremdheid betrek wat woonagtig is in die Wes-Kaap, Suid-Afrika. Kwantitatiewe en kwalitatiewe datainsamelingsmetodes is gebruik. Die kwantitatiewe data is ontleed met korrelasie- en regressietegnieke, terwyl die kwalitatiewe data met behulp van inhoudsontleding in temas en frekwensies gekategoriseer is. Van die 24 gemete onafhanklike veranderlikes het 21 statisties beduidend positief gekorreleer met die afhanklike veranderlike (gesinsaanpassing). Dit sluit gesinstyd en gesinsroetine, kind-roetines, egpaar-saamwees, gesamentlike etes, ouer-kind-saamwees, kontak met familie, gesinstake, gesinsbestuur, gesinsgehardheid, gesinstoewyding, gesinsuitdaging, lokus van kontrole, beskikbaarheid en mobilisering van gemeenskapsbronne, geloof, probleemoplossingsvaardighede en gesinskommunikasiepatrone in. ʼn Ewekansige voor- en nameting kontrolegroep navorsingsontwerp is tydens die intervensiefase van die studie gebruik. Tydens die beskrywende fase van die studie is 47 persone geïdentifiseer wat aangedui het dat hulle graag aan die intervensiefase van die studie wou deelneem. Beide kwantitatiewe en kwalitatiewe data is ingesamel en ontleed met behulp van herhaalde-metingsvariansieontleding, Fisher post-hoc kleinste betekenisvolle verskil-ontledings en inhoudsontleding. Die resultate dui daarop dat gesinsaanpassing statisties beduidend oor tyd verander het. Dit is ʼn betekenisvolle bevinding en impliseer onder andere dat die Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1996; 2001) gebruik kan word om veranderlikes te omlyn wat geassosieer kan word met gesinsaanpassing in gesinne met ʼn kind met ʼn leergestremdheid. Die bevindinge skep nuwe geleenthede en moontlikhede vir verdere navorsing. Verskeie veerkragtigheidsfaktore wat in toekomstige navorsing verder beskryf of as intervensieprogramme ontwikkel en geëvalueer kan word, is geïdentifiseer. Die intervensieprogram wat in hierdie studie ontwikkel is, kan as vertrekpunt dien vir die ontwikkeling van soortgelyke intervensies. Die waarde van ʼn pro-aktiewe welwees-geörienteerde perspektief is belangrik binne die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks waar bronne en navorsing oor gesinsveerkragtigheidsfaktore en gepaste inteintervensieprogramme en gepaste intervensie-programme beperk is.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The literacy development of learners with special educational needs has traditionally been approached from a behaviouristic framework, which led to the reductionistic teaching of language, focussing on smaller units and sub-skills in order to facilitate a simplification of the learning process. During the 80's changes in the area of literacy development occurred, placing the focus on the whole language approach. This approach (embedded in a constructivistic framework) emphasises the holistic and integrated nature of the language and literacy system, which seems to hold advantages for learners with special educational needs. This also includes learners with Down Syndrome since literature shows that a phonetic approach (which is reductionistic in nature) does not seem to benefit these learners in terms of literacy development and support. The purpose of this study therefore was to ascertain the usefulness of the whole language approach in the development of literacy skills of a , learner with Down Syndrome. This was accomplished by means of a literature review and learner support twice a week. The research methology took the form of a single case study consisting of a learner with Down Syndrome within an inclusive classroom. The qualitative nature of the research, which were descriptive and explanatory, made it possible to provide a rich holistic description of the findings. Data derived from various sources were analyzed according to the constant comparative method in order to identify the main and sub-categories. The findings of the study showed real development in the literacy skills of the learner with Down Syndrome. Noticeable, was the fact that the learner's reading skills developed faster in relation to the other skills. This is supported by the literature review. A fifth dimension, namely personal development was identified which promoted development on the cognitive as well as affective area. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geletterdheidsontwikkeling van leerders met spesiale onderwysbehoeftes is tradisioneel vanuit 'n behavioristiese raamwerk benader, wat daartoe aanleiding gegee het dat taal gereduseer is tot kleiner eenhede en subvaardighede ten einde die leerproses te vergemaklik. Gedurende die tagtigerjare het veranderinge op die gebied van geletterdheidsontwikkeling plaasgevind, wat die fokus op die geheeltaalbenadering geplaas het. Hierdie benadering (gesetel in die konstruktivistiese verwysingsraamwerk) lê klem op die holistiese en geïntegreerde aard van die taal- en geletterdheidsisteem, wat blyk om voordeel vir leerders met spesiale onderwysbehoefte in te hou. Dit sluit ook die leerder met Downsindroom in, aangesien literatuur daarop wys dat die fonetiese benadering (reduksionisties van aard) nie blyk om tot voordeel van hierdie leerders se geletterdheidsontwikkeling en -ondersteuning te strek nie. Die kwalitatiewe aard van die navorsing, wat beskrywend, verkennend en verklarend is, het dit moontlik gemaak om 'n ryk holistiese beskrywing van die bevindinge te gee. Data afkomstig van verskeie bronne is volgens die konstante vergelykende metode geanaliseer ten einde die hoofkategorieë en subkategorieë te identifiseer. Die bevindinge van die studie het gedui op 'n beduidende ontwikkeling van die die leerder met Downsindroom se geletterdheidsvaardighede. Opmerklik was die feit dat die leerder se leesvaardighede, in vergelyking met die ander geletterdheidsvaardighede, vinniger ontwikkel het. Dit word deur die literatuuroorsig ondersteun. This work consists of a discussion, analysis and reading of Borges?stories, in that the problem of interest pronounces to the language, to the speech and the deed, sending them so much to the Literature with relationship to the Philosophy, so much to the statute of the ficcional, with relationship to the of the ontologic. Full textThe constitutive activation of the RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK signaling pathway is observed in about 65% of cutaneous melanoma. NRAS and BRAF mutations are found in cells of origin of melanoma which have common characteristics with melanocyte stem cells (MSCs). Despite the large number of study about the role of the RAF/MEK/ERK in melanoma, little is known about its role in the melanocyte lineage in vivo. We generated mice deleted for B-raf and C-raf genes specifically in the melanocyte lineage. These animals displayed normal pigmentation at birth, revealing that raf genes are not required for the development of the melanocyte lineage. However, following the first hair molting, the double knockout animals unveiled a hair graying phenotype, which is characterized by the substitution of black hairs by white ones. This phenotype is the consequence of the depletion of the hair follicles in melanocyte stem cells (MSCs). Therefore, RAF proteins play a key role in the MSCs self-renewal process. We performed a transcriptomic analysis in order to identify target genes of the RAF/MEK/ERK signaling pathway which might be involved in MSCs self-renewal regulation. This analysis showed a downregulation of the transcription of the c-met gene in MSCs from animals lacking raf genes. The c-met gene encodes a tyrosine kinase receptor which is responsible for the RAF/MEK/ERK signaling pathway activation. We demonstrated that MSCs proliferation is controlled via c-MET receptor activation by its ligand HGF. Moreover, MSCs wild-type treated with a c-MET inhibitor are unable to survive in vitro. Taken together, our results show that RAF and MET kinases are required for proper MSCs maintenance

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie was onderneem om insig te bekom oor hoёrskool leerders met 'n liggaamlike gestremdheid se ervaringe. Kwalitatiewe navorsing is gedoen ten einde begrip en insig te ontwikkel omtrent die kernaspekte ter bevordering van effektiewe insluiting van adolessente met 'n liggaamlike gestremdheid tot die hoofstroomskool. Die narratiewe ondersoek as ontwerp was gepas juis omdat so 'n ontwerp kreatiewe ruimte laat vir die deelnemers om die betekenis wat hulle aan hul lewenservarings heg, te verwoord. Die deelnemers is die geleentheid gebied om in hul eie woorde en op hul eie manier hul storie te vertel van hoe hulle met 'n gestremdheid hoёrskool ervaar. Die primêre metodes van ondersoek was semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude, een fokusgroeponderhoud en die skep van kollages. Die deelnemers is huidiglik in die adolessensie fase wat hulle op dieselfde emosionele en fisieke ontwikkelingsvlak as hul portuur plaas. Die verskil word gemanifesteer in hoe die adolessente met liggaamlike gestremdhede hulself sien en hoe die reaksies van hulle portuurgroep oor hulle gestremdhede hulle selfbeeld beïnvloed. Beter insig in die realiteit van hul ervarings, hulle gevoelens en uitdagings kan beter ondersteuning aan dié adolessente moontlik maak. Die proses van data-analise het vyf temas opgelewer, naamlik: skoolkeuse, sosiale lewe, ondersteuning, reaksies op gestremdhede en uitdagings. Die kernaspekte hieraan verbonde berus hoofsaaklik op die houdings en sieninge van die hele skoolgemeenskap, die aanspreek van die uitdagings, die benutting van spesifieke onderwys- en onderrigstrategieё ter bevordering van insluiting en die erkenning van die waarde wat die insluiting van adolessente met liggaamlike gestremdhede tot hoofstroom-onderwys toevoeg. Die bevindinge dui daarop dat, alhoewel die reaksies op hul gestremdheid meesal negatief is, word die adolessente deur die positiwiteit van 'n minderheid aangemoedig om uitdagings te oorbrug. Negatiewe ervarings sluit in strukturele uitdagings, gevoelens van hartseer, eensaamheid, uitsluiting, verwerping, frustrasie, onvergenoegheid, angstigheid en geїrriteerdheid. Positiewe ervarings sluit in vaardighede, bekwaamheid, talente, interafhanklikheid, volhoubare ondersteuning en vriendskappe sowel as geleenthede vir interaksie met hulle portuurgroep, veral die van die teenoorgestelde geslag. Die studie het ook leemtes uitgewys in terme van die onvermoё van die onderwysowerheid om hulle insluiting in die hoofstroom te fasiliteer by wyse van infrastruktuur sowel as bewusmakingsveldtogte en die daarstelling van programme om adolessente met 'n liggaamlike gestremdheid te ondersteun.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was undertaken to acquire insight into the experiences of high school learners with a physical disability. Qualitative research methods were used to develop understanding and insight with regard to core aspects which promotes effective inclusion of adolescents with a physical disability into mainstream. The narrative approach as research design was appropriate especially as this research design allows the participants greater creativity to express in words the meaning of their lived experiences. The participants were offered the opportunity to tell their stories in their own words and in their own way of how they experience high school with a disability. The primary methods of research were semi-structured interviews, one focus group interview and the creation of collages. The participants are currently in the phase of adolescence which places them on the same level of emotional and physical development as their peers. The difference manifests itself in the way that adolescents with a physical disability see themselves and how the reactions of their peers towards their disabilities influence their self-image. Enhanced insight into the reality of the experiences, feelings and challenges of adolescents with disabilities can lead to improved support. The process of data analysis has yielded five themes, namely: school selection, social life, support, reactions towards disabilities and challenges. Important aspects related to these themes are based mainly on the attitudes and views of the whole school community; the way in which challenges are addressed; the utilization of specific education and teaching strategies to improve inclusion and the acknowledgement of the value of inclusion that adolescents with physical disabilities add to mainstream education. The findings indicated that, although the reactions towards their disability are mostly negative, these adolescents are being driven to overcome their challenges through the positivity of a minority. Negative experiences include: structural challenges, feelings of sadness, loneliness, exclusion, rejection, frustration, not being good enough, anxiety and irritability. Positive experiences include: skills, competencies, talents, interdependency, sustainable support and friendships, as well as opportunities for interaction with their peers especially those of the opposite sex. The study also indicated shortcomings in terms of the inability of the education authority to facilitate their inclusion into mainstream with regard to infrastructure, as well as awareness campaigns and the introduction of programmes to support adolescents with a physical disability.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Families are often confronted with some type of crisis during their family life cycle, and the presence of an adolescent substance abuser in the family could result in a family crisis. Most studies focus on the negative implications of substance abuse (Flisher, Parry, Evans, Muller, & Lombard, 2003; Parry et al., 2004). More recently, however, researchers have begun to move away from the pathogenic approach to a more strengths-based approach. Therefore the aim of this study was to investigate which factors are associated with family resilience in families with an adolescent substance abuser. Given the complexity of resilience, the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1988) was operationalised in this study to identify which variables could be associated with family resilience. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods were used to gather data from a convenience sample of 50 families drawn from the Western Cape, South Africa. In order to control for gender effects, mothers who had in their families an adolescent substance abuser were encouraged to represent their respective families. A biographical questionnaire and seven quantitative self-report questionnaires were completed by each participant. Pearson product-moment correlations were calculated for the quantitative data in order to determine which independent variables (family factors) were associated with the dependent variable (family adaptation). A best-subsets multiple regression analysis was done to determine the linear combination of family characteristics (indicators) that correlates maximally with family adaptation (outcome variable). Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns or themes within the qualitative data during the qualitative data analysis. The results indicate that the level of family adaptation is better the higher the supportive patterns of communication in the family unit; and that the level of family adaptation is lower the more negative communication patterns are present. The results also indicate that family hardiness, the degree to which families use problem-solving and behaviour strategies during crises, and the use and maintenance of different routines and activities facilitate family adaptation. The qualitative results indicate that spirituality or religion, support from extended family, friends or neighbours, clear positive family communication, maintaining hope and a positive outlook, and the acceptance of the adolescent as part of the family contribute the most to family adaptation. The findings of this study could be used to improve the understanding of qualities that help families to adapt, and interventions and services based on these results may provide a meaningful contribution in the adaptation of families who find themselves in similar situations. This study not only is important to broaden the current literature on family resilience in this development phase, but also to help fill the void in current research.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Dit gebeur gereeld dat gesinne gedurende een of ander ontwikkelingstadium met ʼn krisis gekonfronteer word. So sal die teenwoordigheid van ’n adolessente middelmisbruiker in ’n gesin op moontlike gesinskrisisse dui. Die meerderheid studies fokus op die negatiewe implikasies van middelmisbruik (Flisher, Parry, Evans, Muller, & Lombard, 2003; Parry et al., 2004). Navorsers het egter onlangs begin weg beweeg vanaf die patogeniese benadering na ’n meer sterkte-gebaseerde benadering. Die doel van hierdie studie was dus om ondersoek in te stel na faktore wat geassosieer kan word met gesinsaanpassing in gesinne met ʼn adolessente middelmisbruiker. Gegee die kompleksiteit van veerkragtigheid is die Veerkragtigheidsmodel van Gesinstres, Verstelling en Aanpassing (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1988) in hierdie studie geoperasionaliseer om veranderlikes te identifiseer wat met gesinsveerkragtigheid geassosieer kan word. ʼn Kombinasie van kwantitatiewe en kwalitatiewe metodes is gebruik om data vanuit ’n doelgerigte steekproef van 50 gesinne woonagtig in die Wes-Kaap, Suid-Afrika in te samel. Om vir die effek van geslag te kontroleer, is ma’s aangemoedig om namens die gesinne as verteenwoordigers aan die studie deel te neem. ʼn Biografiese vraelys en ook sewe selfbeskrywingsvraelyste is deur elke deelnemer voltooi. Vir die kwantitatiewe data is Pearson produkmoment-korrelasies bereken om te bepaal watter onafhanklike veranderlikes (gesinsfaktore) met die afhanklike veranderlike (gesinsaanpassing) verband hou. ʼn Beste substel regressieontleding is gedoen om die liniêre kombinasie van gesinskenmerke (voorspellers) wat maksimaal met gesinsaanpassing (uitkomsveranderlike) korreleer, te bepaal. Tematiese ontleding is in die kwalitatiewe data-ontleding gebruik om patrone of temas binne die kwalitatiewe data te identifiseer. Die resultate dui daarop dat die vlak van gesinsaanpassing beter is hoe hoër die ondersteunende patrone van kommunikasie in die gesinseenheid is; en dat die vlak van gesinsaanpassing laer is hoe meer opruiende patrone van kommunikasie in die gesin teenwoordig is. Verder dui die resultate ook aan dat gesinsgehardheid, die mate van probleemoplossings- en gedragstrategieë wat die gesin gedurende krisisse gebruik, en die gebruik en handhawing van verskillende roetines en aktiwiteite ook gesinsaanpassing fasiliteer. Die kwalitatiewe resultate dui daarop dat spiritualiteit of geloof, ondersteuning van die uitgebreide familie, vriende of bure, duidelike positiewe gesinskommunikasie, die behoud van hoop en ’n positiewe uitkyk, en aanvaarding van die adolessent as deel van die gesin die meeste tot gesinsaanpassing bygedra het. Die bevindinge kan nuttig gebruik word om begrip te verbeter van kwaliteite wat gesinne help om aan te pas. Intervensies en dienste wat op hierdie bevindinge gebaseer is, behoort ʼn betekenisvolle bydra te lewer in die aanpassing van gesinne wat hulle in soortgelyke omstandighede bevind. Die studie is nie net belangrik om die kennisbasis oor gesinslewe in hierdie ontwikkelingsfase te verbreed nie, maar ook om ʼn leemte in bestaande navorsing aan te vul.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to develop a theoretical framework for social workers in nongovernmental organisations with regards to the nature and scope of social casework intervention with aggressive adolescents. The research was done based on an extensive literature study, which focussed on theories of aggression and factors which contribute to aggressive behaviour in adolescents, as well as the nature and scope of social casework intervention with aggressive adolescents. A combined qualitative and quantitative research method and an explorative and describing research design have been used in this study, since this combination resulted in reaching the goal of the study. The empirical research investigated the nature and scope of social casework intervention with aggressive adolescents. The universe consisted of all nongovernmental organisations in the Boland-district. Semi-structured questionnaires were used as an interview instrument with a purposive sample of 20 social workers. In light of the findings derived from the literature study and empirical research, appropriate conclusions and related recommendations were made. The main conclusion for this study is that various factors, such as the caseload of social workers and involvement of significant others during intervention, influence participants’ ability to utilise case work effectively during intervention with aggressive adolescents. The main recommendation of this study is that the delivery of social services be prioritized to avoid social work tasks or situations hindering or prohibiting intervention with aggressive adolescents.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie studie was om ‘n teoretiese raamwerk vir maatskaplike werkers in nieregeringsorganisies te bied vir die aard en omvang van maatskaplike gevallewerkintervensie aan adolessente met aggressiewe gedrag. Die ondersoek is gedoen aan die hand van ‘n uitgebreide literatuurstudie, wat gefokus het op teorieë oor aggressie en faktore wat tot aggressiewe gedrag by adolessente aanleiding gee, sowel as die aard en omvang van maatskaplike gevallewerkintervensie aan adolessente met aggressiewe gedrag. ‘n Gekombineerde kwalitatiewe- en kwantitatiewe navorsingsbenadering en ‘n verkennendeen beskrywende navorsingsontwerp is in hierdie studie benut, aangesien hierdie kombinasies die gestelde doelwitte van die studie die beste kon bereik. Die empiriese ondersoek het die aard en omvang van maatskaplike gevallewerkintervensie aan aggressiewe adolessente verken. Die universum het bestaan uit alle nie-regeringsorganisasies in die Boland-distrik. Semi-gestruktureerde vraelyste is as ‘n onderhoudskedule benut. ‘n Doelbewuste-steekproef het uit 20 maatskaplike werkers bestaan. Op grond van die bevindings, voortspruitend uit die literatuurstudie en empiriese ondersoek, kon toepaslike gevolgtrekkings en verbandhoudende aanbevelings gemaak word. Die hoofbevinding van hierdie studie is dat verskeie faktore soos die grootte van maatskaplike wekers se gevalleladings en die betrokkenheid van betekenisvolle ander tydens intervensie, respondente se vermoë beïnvloed om gevallewerkintervensie te benut. Die kernaanbeveling van hierdie studie is dat dienslewering geprioritiseer moet word dat intervensie met betrekking tot aggressiewe adolessente nie ten koste van ander maatskaplikewerk-take en situasies, benadeel word nie.

This study aims to analyze and discuss the use of metaphors in undergraduate academic Portuguese, assuming that the conceptual system of the human being is fundamentally metaphorical in nature (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). According to Herrmann (2013), metaphor plays a crucial role in academic discourse and it has been discussed in the academic environment. In the last decades, different perspectives have been studied metaphor phenomenon, like Linguistics, Psychology, Anthropology, Computer Science and their interfaces. In order to address the issue in academic Portuguese and promote a characterization of this type of genre, as well as assist Brazilian and foreign students in relation to education and Portuguese language learning, we analyzed a corpus consisting of academic articles published by undergraduate students (native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese) from a private university of Brazil. These articles were chosen from two different academic areas: Communication and Computer Science. From the corpus analysis, we could observe that the areas studied seem to use metaphors in different ways, with different characteristics in each of them.
O presente trabalho prop?e analisar e discutir o uso de met?foras no portugu?s acad?mico da gradua??o, assumindo que o sistema conceitual do ser humano ? fundamentalmente metaf?rico por natureza (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). Segundo Herrmann (2013), a met?fora desempenha um papel crucial no discurso acad?mico e tem alimentado discuss?es acad?micas. Nas ?ltimas d?cadas, o fen?meno da met?fora passou a ser abordado a partir de diversas perspectivas, como da Lingu?stica, Psicologia, Antropologia, Ci?ncias da Computa??o e suas interfaces. A fim de abordar a quest?o no portugu?s acad?mico e promover uma caracteriza??o para esse tipo de discurso, bem como auxiliar alunos brasileiros e estrangeiros no que se refere ao ensino e aprendizagem de l?ngua portuguesa, analisamos um corpus constitu?do por artigos acad?micos publicados por alunos de gradua??o (falantes nativos do portugu?s brasileiro) de uma universidade privada do Brasil das ?reas da Comunica??o e das Ci?ncias da Computa??o. A partir da an?lise do corpus, observou-se que as ?reas estudadas parecem utilizar as met?foras de forma diferenciada, apresentando caracter?sticas distintas em cada uma delas.

Full textIn this study quantitative research is employed to determine if cognitive control therapy can successfully be utilized in a group situation to alleviate cognitive deficiency in learners with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Learners with ADHD often do not gain from traditional play- and psychotherapy due to the fact that they do not possess the required cognitive structure necessary to support successful learning. Many of these learners do not receive sufficient assistance and support due to a shortage of government supported educational psychological aid. An empirical investigation of limited scope was performed to establish whether cognitive deficiencies can be alleviated by means of applying cognitive control therapy in a group situation. A one-group pretest-posttest design was utilized where the same group of subjects was studies before and after the experimental treatment. The results indicate that the cognitive control therapy program resulted in a considerable change.

The stability of meat color has long been concerned by meat industry and consumers. The major pigments in muscle are hemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb). However, after being slaughtered, Mb would become the major pigment. In tissue, the reduced form of Mb, which is purple, exists in equilibrium with its oxygenated form of oxyMb. Browning of meat is considered to be due to the oxidation of iron from reduced- into oxidized-form. This study aims to investigate the effect of metMb reductase on color stability of red-flesh tuna, which consequently elucidate the role of metMb reductase in the color stability of red meats. To investigate the accumulation of pigments in relation to the decrease in metMb reductase activity, bluefin tuna flesh cubes(Thunnus thynnus) (3 X 2 X 0.5 cm / piece) were placed on a polyethylene (PE) tray with/without wrapping with PE film. Both samples were then stored at 4C under a relative humidity (RH) of 100% for 120 h, during which the change in metMb reductase activity, the rate of metMb formation, and the changes in amounts of NADH and NADPH were measured. Decrease in Hunter a value and increase in L value were observed for both samples during 120-h storage. MetMb reductase activity of both samples decreased, while the metMb increased with the duration of storage. The NADH of tuna meat increased during the first 56-80 h of storage, but decreased during the prolonged storage. Although the NADPH of both wrapped and unwrapped samples decreased, the total amount of NADH and NADPH seemed to keep a constant level during the first 80-h storage and then significantly decreased. These results suggested that metMb reductase might be an important factor affecting the metMb accumulation in refrigerated tuna. For further investigation of the effect of metMb reductase on color stability, the reductase was purified to electrophoretical homogeneity from ordinary bluefin tuna muscle by ammonium sulfate fractionation, ion exchange and organomercurial agarose affinity chromatographies. The molecular mass (M) was estimated to be 100 kDa, while the optimal pH and temperature were 7.3 and 25C, respectively. This enzyme was stable at a pH range of 7.0-7.3 and a temperature of 4-15C. It was strongly activated by K+, Cd2+, Sr2+and Ni2+, moderately activated by Mn2+and Ca2+, but not affected by Na+. However it was moderately inhibited by Li+, NH4+, Mg2+, Zn2+ and Co2+, and completely inhibited by Cu2+and Fe2+. The Vmax for the reduction of met-Mb and NADH were 0.32 and 0.43 mmol/min/mg, while the Km were 2.3 X 10-5 and 24.4 X 10-5 M for metMb and NADH, respectively. To investigate the metMb reducing ability of metMb reductase, the browned tuna meat was immersed with/without metMb reductase (0.103 unit/ml) solution for 120 min at 4C. The metMb reductase activity of browned tuna meat significantly increased, while no significant change was observed on control sample during the first 10 min immersion. Comparing the changes in metMb reductase activity, metMb content, Hunter a value and color, this reductase did recover the bright red color of the meat. To further confirm the role of metMb reductase in color stability, fresh tuna meat was first immersed in metMb reductase (0.503 unit/ml) solution or a mixture of the reductase and NADH (1 mM) solution at 4C for 10 min, and then stored at 4C, RH 100%. No significant change in metMb accumulation and in metMb reductase activity was observed between samples treated with enzyme alone and enzyme + NADH. The changes in metMb reductase activity, metMb, Hunter a value and color of both control and treated samples suggested that immersion of metMb reductase could extend the color stability of tuna meat, and the enzymatic reduction of metMb by its reductase occurred during refrigerated storage.

The story of “The Summer we met” depicts a girl named Summer who obeys her parents’ will moving back to her hometown, and giving up her own dream to pursue a job meets her academic training. Right in that summer, at the beach, she meets a boy (Hai), who encountered challenges over job-hunting, and decides to run a surf shop on his own. Hai asks Summer for help to operate the surf shop. Throughout the path of dream fulfilling, they brainstorm the marketing campaign, re-decorating, and mapping the future for the shop together. Although they come across the rumors, and frustrations, they confront the difficulties with courage. This 3D movie is a 20-minute live-action drama. Before studying in National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA), one had the chance to collaborate with 3D animation companies; thus, one acquired further understanding on 3D producing theories. Additionally, under the training of Graduate School of Applied Media Arts of NTUA, one has explored in script writing and film producing. The year of 2010 was known as "The first year of a 3D film era" in industrial sector. Many movies and video products emphasize on the 3D effects. That was when one attempted to merge what one has learned from work and school into a 3D movie for graduation production. Most of the 3D movies available in the market are done by animation or special effect editing. Therefore, the script of “The Summer We Met” is specially written for a live-action shooting 3D movie, which can be considered as an experimental movie, with a hope to provide an example for this field, and put what one has learned into practice. After one year of production procedure, one obtains both creating concepts as well as execution experiences over 3D live-action shooting, and would like to share them in this dissertation. A 3D film needs to construct the shooting scene with 3D logic. While shooting, one needs to adjust these 2 cameras with a net partition board. For editing, one should edit with the story line, before deal with 3D synthesize technique. Finally, to display the final 3D content, one needs to export the content with a corresponding 3D format. With one’s experience sharing, one feels like to offer useful reference for those filmmakers whom are also interested in 3D live-action shooting work.

Full textThe socio-political climate in South-Africa has led to an increase in the number of children experiencing anxiety-related symptoms. Children are observant and notice how their parents react and discuss with other adults the violence and uncontrollable crime rate that exists in our society at present. Society generally views childhood as a naturally happy time, free of responsibilities and worries. But the implication that children are somehow protected from the emotional effects of traumatic events is not true. Children are, in fact, as susceptible to trauma as adults. Many children have experienced incredible trauma first hand and these traumatic events can have a negative effect on the child's self concept and future functioning. Mother problem arising from the insecurity of the socio-political climate is that parents tend to feel that they have to take greater safety precautions, thus children are lacking opportunities for developing independence. Other stress aspects are the changes in family structures. One out of every three children will experience divorce, and will have to cope with the stress of reconstituted families. Not only is there stress involved in the process of divorce, but prior to the divorce conditions within the home are unbearable tense and full of conflict. Children in the South - African townships are often left in the care of extended families due to the fact that their parents may be working far from where they live and go to school. Because of the complexities and breakdown of family life, these children are often forced to get on with their lives and growing up on their own, with no or little family support. It is clear that our children of today often find themselves in positions that they are not developmentally and emotionally equipped to handle, and the instinct of survival is often what they rely on. The South African society consists of a set of complex and often polarised systems, each with its own difficulties. The need for intervention and therapy is great, but the resources are limited. Psychotherapy with a professional play therapist is just not a viable solution for many children. Not only is there a limit to the professional resources available, but a lot of parents see it as a waste of time and the financial cost can be crippling. The situational access is another problem that needs to be addressed. Many children are simply not in a physical position to gain access to therapy. It becomes clear every day that in South Africa, the Western view of individualised and specialised play therapy for children is simply not feasible in many instances. The objective of this research project is to describe the therapeutic process in order to establish certain guidelines regarding therapy with traumatized toddlers. The efficiency of this process will also be discussed. The design of this research project compelled a qualitative research strategy, where the researcher in this study is also the therapist. A participating research process is thus of importance in this project. This research project looks at the process and the implications of short term therapy, especially Narrative Therapy with toddlers between the ages of four to seven years. The project describes the therapy process of co-constructing new and preferred narratives with three clients by challenging dominant discourses of violence, death , loss and trauma. The results of the therapeutic process as well as the shortages and recommendations conconclude this research project.

Full textResearch literature regarding functional enuresis indicates that the prevalence of functional enuresis is higher in institutionalised children as opposed to non-institutionalised children. A preliminary survey conducted at the Abraham Kriel Children's Home revealed that approximately 10% of the children experience problems with enuresis. One of the childrens' personal files was studied. From this it appeared that although on a number of occasions there were therapeutic interventions, the girl still experiences problems with enuresis. To enable better understanding of this phenomenon it was decided to obtain a holistic image of the girl's construction of meaning, and, by so doing, establish whether the therapeutic interventions addressed and tackled the crux of the problem. To achieve this goal (which is exploratory and descriptive in nature, with a contextual concern), a qualitative single case study was used as the chosen research format. In this research a developmental exploration of the girl's world of meaning was performed. By means of a holistic analysis her life history was analysed in the light of Erik Erikson's developmental theory. Developmental tasks and needs that are characteristic of each life phase were identified. On the basis of this the girl's circumstances were examined in order to determine her possible self meaning. Hierdie studie is gerig deur die uitgangspunt dat die verhouding van die kind met Asperger Sindroom in die middelkinderjare met lede van die portuurgroep verbeter kan word met hulp van ouers en onderwysers. Daarom word riglyne in hierdie studie beskryf. Die gebrek aan gesonde verhoudinge met die portuurgroep wat deur die kind met Asperger Sindroom ervaar word is as navorsingsprobleem geformuleer. Die doel van studie was om die kind met Asperger Sindroom in die middelkinderjare se verhouding met die portuurgroep te bevorder. Ten einde hierdie doel te bereik, is die navorsingsproses deur kwantitatiewe navorsing gerig en semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude met deelnemers gevoer. Full textCoronary artery disease (CAD) is a life-threatening disease. When heart patients in the treatment of their disease, due to certain subjugating discourses practised by the biomedical model or biomedicine, are treated in a way that contributes to their anxiety and they feel themselves marginalised by society, then CAD becomes even more threatening. The narrative-pastoral approach of this study aims to treat heart patients in a way that has a calming effect on them that could assist them to deal with their heart disease more efficiently. This study shows how a heart patient's illness stories can be centralised by means of narrative therapy and how a pastoral and ethical attitude of love and respect can produce a climate that's conducive to better health and well-being. I indicate how my methodology of participatory action research succeeds in making the heart patients active participants to the research project. Their active participation indicates that meaning is not created on their behalf in therapy; rather, they are responsible for the process of richer construction of meaning. I describe how the participants socially co-constructed alternative and richer descriptions of their illness. Futhermore, I point out how their richer descriptions of illness contribute to perceptible and measurable results that are of value to the heart patients.

Hierdie studie toon aan hoe hartpasiente se siekteverhale deur middel van narratiewe terapie gesentreer word en hoe 'n etiese en pastorale gesindheid van liefde en respek 'n klimaat skep wat bevorderlik is vir beter gesondheid en welwese. Ek dui aan hoe my metodologie van deelnemende aksienavorsing daarin geslaag het om die hartpasiente aktiewe deelnemers te maak aan die navorsingsprojek. Hul aktiewe deelname impliseer dat betekenis nie in terapie vir hulle geskep word nie, maar dat hulle self skeppend betrokke is in die proses van ryker betekeniskonstruering. Ek beskryf hoe die deelnemers altematiewe en ryker beskrywings van hul siekte sosiaal ko-konstrueer. Ek dui verder aan hoe hul ryker beskrywings van siekte bydra tot sigbare en meetbare resultate wat vir hartpasiente van waarde is.
