Abstract:
Ophiolites are defined as slices of genetically-related upper mantle serpentinized peridotites and oceanic crustal rocks, tectonically displaced from its primary igneous origin of formation by plate convergence and associated (meta) sedimentary rocks of marine origin. From this premise, a meta-ultramafic-mafic-sedimentary complex (Cr-rich magnesian schists - upper mantle or crustal ultramafic cumulate candidates; epidote amphibolites, metadiorites and metagabbros - oceanic crust candidates; metasedimentary schists, quartzites and marbles - marine sedimentary rocks candidates), located in south

The Araçuaí belt corresponds to the external portion of the western half of the Araçuaí-West Congo Neopro-terozoic orogen. TheAraçuaí belt fringes the São Francisco craton to east and is separated from the crystalline core of the orogen by the Abre Campo geophysical discontinuity. The southern Araçuaí belt involves four major lithologic units: the Archean and Paleoproterozoic gneisses of the Mantiqueira Complex, the Pedra Dourada Charnockite, the Paleoproterozoic Borrachudos Granitoid, and the metavolcanosedimentary rocks of the Dom Silvério Group. The Dom Silvério Group occurs in a NNE-SSW st

AbstractIn the southern Aosta Valley (Italian Western Alps), several massive magnetite bodies occur within serpentinized ultramafic rocks belonging to the Mesozoic meta-ophiolite nappe. The ultramafic rocks consist of lherzolite with minor dunite bodies and show a high pressure metamorphic overprint. The results of a multi-methodological study, based on optical microscopy, electron microprobe analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, are reported here in order to give new insights into (1) the mineralogy and crystal chemistry of spinels and silicates and (2) the genesis of the massive mag

AbstractThe Takab complex is composed of a variety of metamorphic rocks including amphibolites, metapelites, mafic granulites, migmatites and meta-ultramafics, which are intruded by the granitoid. The granitoid magmatic activity occurred in relation to the subduction of the Neo-Tethys oceanic crust beneath the Iranian crust during Tertiary times. The granitoids are mainly granodiorite, quartz monzodiorite, monzonite and quartz diorite. Chemically, the magmatic rocks are characterized by ASI<1.04, AI<0.87 and high contents of CaO (up to ~14.5 wt%), which are consistent with the I-type mag

AbstractThe six exposures of the Upper tectonic Unit of the Cycladic Massif occurring on the island of Tinos are shown to comprise a metamorphosed dismembered ophiolite complex. The common stratigraphic section consisting of tens-of-metres- thick tectonic slices of mafic phyllites overlain by serpentinites and gabbros is considered to have been derived by a combination of thrusting during obduction and subsequent attenuation by low-angle normal faults. All rock types show evidence of a phase of regional greenschist-facies metamorphism, which in the case of the phyllites is accompanied by penet
