Abstract:
Purpose In this study, the authors revisit the meta-analytic correlates of career satisfaction and demonstrate the use of metaBUS – a database repository of meta-analytic effect sizes and related information from the field of applied psychology. The purpose of this paper is to extend prior meta-analytic research on the topic of career satisfaction and compare the results from the metaBUS-enabled meta-analysis, with the results from meta-analyses that do not build on the repository. Design/methodology/approach A multilevel meta-analysis was conducted on all correlates available in the metaBUS database and the approach was described in a step-by-step fashion. Findings The demonstration reiterated some of the findings of prior meta-analyses, but also revealed considerable incongruity between the sample taken from the metaBUS database and the meta-analytic sample from studies that relied on non-metaBUS-based literature searches. Nevertheless, the results are similar in terms of the directions of the effects and the relative sizes of the effects. Research limitations/implications The paper demonstrates the use of the metaBUS database. In addition, results suggest that meta-analyses on career satisfaction might have suffered from sample selection issues, but further research is required in order to establish the source of the sample selection incongruence. Originality/value This is the first step-by-step demonstration of the use of metaBUS specifically for meta-analyses.

Abstract:
In this article, we provide a review of research-curation and knowledge-management efforts that may be leveraged to advance research and education in psychological science. After reviewing the approaches and content of other efforts, we focus on the metaBUS project’s platform, the most comprehensive effort to date. The metaBUS platform uses standards-based protocols in combination with human judgment to organize and make readily accessible a database of research findings, currently numbering more than 1 million. It allows users to conduct rudimentary, instant meta-analyses, and capacities for visualization and communication of meta-analytic findings have recently been added. We conclude by discussing challenges, opportunities, and recommendations for expanding the project beyond applied psychology.

Abstract:
Translation studies researchers have for a long time critically engaged with the idea of translation being a mode of creative rewriting across media and cultural or temporal divides. Adaptation studies experts use a similar premise to study products, processes and reception of adaptations for specific locales. This article combines such perspectives in order to shed light on an under-researched area of comic adaptation: this is the metabase, or transfer, of Aristophanic comedies to the comic book format in Greek and their subsequent translation into English for an e-book edition (Metaichmio Publications 2012). The paper suggests a model for the close reading of creative transfer based on Lefèvre’s (2011; 2012) typology of formal properties of comics and Attardo’s (2002) General Theory of Verbal Humour. As is shown, visual rhythm and text-image relations create a rich environment for anachronism, parody, comic characterisation and ideological comments, all of which serve a condensed plot. The English translation rewrites cultural/ideological references, amplifies obscenity and emphasizes narrator visibility, always taking into consideration the mise en scène.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Habitat disturbance may affect average behavioural types and consistency/plasticity of behaviour. Studies with solitary vertebrates suggest that human-modified habitats may favour bolder, more aggressive and more plastic individuals. We evaluated whether wild colonial spiders, Metabus gravidus, vary in the magnitude, consistency and plasticity of boldness and aggressiveness between an undisturbed forest and an adjacent urban area in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Repeatability of aggressiveness was high at the disturbed site but moderate at the undisturbed site; repeatability of boldness was low at both sites. Individual and population plasticity was similar between sites for both behaviours. Aggressiveness decreases with increasing colony size at the disturbed site; this trend was not observed at the undisturbed site. Boldness did not change with colony size. In contrast to solitary animals, our results indicate that less aggressive and more consistent colonies may have an advantage living in human-disturbed habitats.

Ciminera, Marina. Thesis, Guyane, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017YANE0016/document.

Abstract:
The genus Hylesia (Lepidoptera Saturniidae) are moths of human health importance in Venezula and French Guiana, inducing epidemic outbreaks of lepidopterism, a puriginous dermatitis caused by the urticating properties of the females’ abdominal setae. Adult female releases extremely urticating setae in the surrounding air, causing itchy dermatitis known as ‘papillonite’. Hylesia are attracted by artificial light source which are increasing since the end of the 19th century due to urbanization resulting in serious invasion event in towns and villages. Despite of the impact on human health, many aspects of the biology and their ecology remain unclear. The definition of specific methods of population regulation is thus very urgent but it was necessary first of all to verify that only the species H. metabus is involved in these episodes of urtication and to specify the population structure of these insects. It was also important to clarify the mechanisms for recognizing sexual partners in this same species. These questions were the mainobjectives of this thesis. The use of molecular tools has shown that a single species, Hylesia metabus, was involved in recent episodes ofurtication in Guyana and Venezuela. The study also demonstrated that the Guyanese populations of this species aregenetically distinct from the Venezuelan populations, and especially that they are structured in 2 distinct genetic subgroupsbetween the coast and the interior of French Guiana. All insects collected during outbreaks belonged to thecoastal subset. An approach based on the study of reproductive behavior has been used to clarify the temporality ofemission of the sex pheromone and opens new perspectives for the identification of this pheromone
