Drought stress is perhaps the most commonly encountered abiotic stress plants experience in the natural environment, and is one of the most important factors limiting plant productivity. In the studies described in this text, drought-stressed poplar trees (Populus spp.) were analyzed for their metabolite content using the technique of untargeted metabolite profiling by employing gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The purpose of these analyses was to characterize the metabolite profile of poplar trees under drought stress in order to assess relative drought resistance and

RATIONALE: The accurate measurement of antimalarial drug concentrations in key target patient groups is essential to ensure optimal dosing for malaria treatment and to distinguish between inadequate drug exposure and antimalarial resistance. METHODS: A sensitive and selective liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrophotometric method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of amodiaquine and its active metabolite, desethylamodiaquine in 20μl heparinised human capillary whole blood and capillary plasma. During validation no significant matrix effects were observed for th

Abstract:
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the greatest cause of mortality, after cancer, in older adults (>60 years). CVD risk can be modulated by sedentary behaviour (SB) and physical activity (PA) however, research examining the effect of SB and PA on older adults' cardiovascular/metabolic profile is lacking. This thesis aimed to address this gap in the literature. Ninety-three independently living older adults wore a thigh-mounted triaxial accelerometer for 7 consecutive days to assess habitual SB and PA engagement and patterns. Fasting blood samples to assess seven cardiometabolic marker concentrati

Urban areas cover 2% of the Earth’s land surface, host more than 50% of global population and are estimated to account for around 75% of CO2 emissions from global energy use. In order to mitigate existing and future direct and indirect environmental pressures resulting from urban resource use, it is necessary to investigate and better understand resource and pollution flows associated with urban systems.Current urban environmental assessment methodologies enable the quantification of resource use and pollution emissions flows entering, becoming stocked and exiting urban areas. The enzymatic organization of muscle tissue usually is examined in only a select few muscles of any one animal species. However, because the functional demands placed on individual muscles can vary so widely from muscle to muscle, it is inappropriate to generalize findings from one or two muscles to muscle tissue in general. The differences or similarities in metabolic machinery between skeletal muscles of a wide functional range provides crucial information with respect to a particular animals' whole body metabolism. Nowhere is this understanding more important than in the diving marine mamma

Abstract:
Heat stress (HS) causes significant losses to the U.S. swine industry in several production and health areas including efficient lean tissue accretion. Perturbations in skeletal muscle metabolism may participate in this defect. The study objectives were to examine the cellular bioenergetic profile in skeletal muscle of piglets subjected to thermal stress in utero and/or during postnatal life. To accomplish this, 96 offspring from 14 sows were prenatally exposed to 1 of 4 environmental treatments involving thermal neutral (TN, 25°C) or HS conditions (cyclical 28-34°C). Abstract:
Clostridium thermocellum is a fermentative, Gram-positive, thermophile capable of cellulosome-mediated breakdown of hemicellulose and simultaneous biofuels (ethanol and H2) production, and is thus an excellent candidate for consolidated bioprocessing. However, ethanol and/or H2 production yields are below theoretical maxima due to branched product pathways. Biofuel yields may be improved by manipulation of fermentation conditions or implementation of rational metabolic engineering strategies. However, the latter relies on a thorough understanding of gene content, gene product expression, en
