Abstract:
Demand for joint replacements is rising in Australia, driven by a sharp increase in the number of joint problems associated with population aging and obesity. In artificial joints, delamination or failure within the coatings occurs when the stress reaches a critical level, resulting in large wear debris particles appearing on the contact surface between the head and the cup. The process has been described as due to a stress-corrosion-cracking mechanism. Under the same loading, stress increases when the contact area decreases, which happens in the vicinity of wear debris. As such, once wear deb

Abstract:
Aquatic plants can be significant sinks for dissolved metals in metal contaminated streams. This study found water speedwell (Veronica anagallis aquatica) growing in Pinal Creek both bio-accumulates metals (Mn, Zn, Ni, and Co) and provides surfaces for metal precipitation. Analysis of plant tissue found that roots accumulate up to 80 g Mn/kg dry root, with the majority of metals associated with the external plant surface. Fine sediments around water speedwell colonies have 2-10 times higher metal concentrations than surrounding sediments. SEM photos of the plant surface show clum

Abstract:

Abstract:
Considering the immense involvement of metal ions in metabolism, protein structure, electron transfer, and their relation to health and disease, deciphering the mechanisms by which metals are stored, transported, sensed and incorporated within the human biosystem is imperative to further understand metal homeostasis and metal-related diseases. In this "omics" age, the emerging field of metallomics sets out to do just that. The metallome of a tissue, fluid, or cell includes aquated trace elements and their complexes with endogenous and induced biomolecules, including organic acids, sugars

The humified wastes generate compost. In addition, a constructed wetland (CW) treatment is regarded as one of several biological treatment processes that can beneficially change the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM). This study investigated optical characteristics and metal concentrations of composted humic substances (HS) in chicken manure as well as DOM in a CW. The compost
