Abstract:
Metal Music and Islamic Religious Values: The Aesthetics Review of Islamic Music in Purgatory Performance. Metal music is closely related to violence, rebellion, and abuse. Therefore, the metal band is also associated with those images. Purgatory, a metal band in Jakarta, however, is trying to establish a distinctive image to those of metal bands in common. They are to promote Islamic religious values in their music and performances. In this paper, the writers seek to understand how this band remains having their fans with these issues. This study uses an ethnographic approach. Data collection is carried out by doing the participatory observation. The writers actively got involved in the metal music performances and also other various activities. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that there are three dimensions of the aesthetics perceptions, i.e. carrying Islamic religious values, having a characteristic that displays the characteristics of metal music, and broadcasting good values that support Mogerz, fans of Purgatory, to keep on attracted to the band and their music. Keywords: Islamic metal music; purgatory; mogers

Abstract:
A series of interviews were conducted to explore the experience of what it is like to be a member of metal music culture living with mental health conditions and/or developmental disabilities. Ten participants were interviewed, three of which had schizophrenia, four with autism spectrum disorder, two had bipolar affective disorder and one had borderline personality disorder. Thematic analysis was utilized to explore the experiences of people living with various types of mental illness and developmental disabilities in the context of metal, which resulted in the development of three overarching themes. It was found that participants felt that the metal music community was more welcoming to them due to the broad use of lyrics about mental health topics and the prevalence of metal musicians that have mental health concerns. The broad application of mental health topics in metal was seen as having a de-stigmatizing effect towards mental health concerns, but at the cost of accuracy, as topics like schizophrenia are seen as fetishized and inaccurately depicted. Participants reported that the metal community affords its members with mental health conditions and developmental disabilities a number of benefits including a sense of belonging, the facilitation of mood maintenance and the management of lesser symptoms. Symptom management appeared to be mitigated by symptom severity and influenced how participants experienced metal music.

Abstract:
Abstract— Metal music is not 'easy listening' music. Unlike pop music which is full of "laziness", metal music is full of "explosions" from a musical aspect so, not everyone is able and willing to explore metal music. Because of its aggressive noise, metal music is flourishing in the big cities. Madura, whose society tends to be traditional, is a serious obstacle for its young people who enjoy metal music. Those who enjoy metal music are commonly referred to as "metal youths". So far, there have not been many metal studies in Madura. In fact, Madurese metal youths performed metal music scenes that were no less great than those of outsiders. Therefore, this study seeks to describe scenes of obedience to Madurese metal youths with a musical phenomenology approach, and to explain them from the perspective of subcultural studies. Based on the results of the research, it shows that the scenes of the metalization of Madurese metal youths are not only centered on the musical scene, but also, jump out of the musical scene which shakes the stability of the tradition and the political domination of their religion. Abstract:
Kata kunci : Eksistensi, Musik, Death Metal di Jakarta Abtract The research entitled The Existence of Death Metal Music in Jakarta 1989-2000 aims to find out about the development of death metal music in Jakarta. In this research, the historical method is used with heuristic stages, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study inform that the existence of death metal music in Jakarta began with the founding of the band Grausig in 1989. Then from 1991-1998 formed as many as 23 death metal bands. At the beginning of their establishment, these bands still played songs belonging to foreign death metal bands. In 1993, a historic place called Poster Café was established, which is a regular venue for performances by death metal bands in Jakarta. During this period, there were also many college and school events that featured death metal bands. The birth of a fanzine in Jakarta was marked by the circulation of a fanzine called Brainwashed Zine since September 1996. In 1999 there was a change in the direction of writing lyrics for death metal songs, which previously discussed “devil”, into songs with the theme of socio-political criticism. These changes occurred as a result of the authoritarian New Order government. In 2000 the record label Rottrevore Records was formed. The label gave birth to a new standard for the existence of death metal music in Jakarta. The new standard is that record labels must become a professional forum for death metal bands under their umbrella. It can be concluded that the lyrics of death metal songs in Jakarta are not only themed "devil", but there are also song lyrics with the theme of socio-political criticism. Keywords : death metal, poster café, rottrevore records

Abstract:
This article considers how genre is treated in metal fan communities and metal scholarship. In identifying shortcomings in the existing literature with regard to genre definitions, it argues that musical characteristics should be the primary defining characteristics of metal subgenres. To this end, this article posits both a taxonomy for classifying metal genres and a model for analysing their characteristics. This model consists of five characteristics – pitch, timbre, form, rhythm and aesthetics – which, when combined, can elucidate the specific musical and extra-musical elements that comprise metal’s various subgenres. This provides a framework through which metal musicology and other scholarship can develop a common background and work towards concrete definitions of metal subgenres.

Abstract:
Distinct challenges are posed when conveying Contemporary Metal Music’s(CMM) sounds and performance perspectives within a recorded and mixed form. CMM often features down tuned, heavily distorted timbres, alongside high tempi, fast and frequently complex subdivisions, and highly synchronised instrumentation. The combination of these elements results in a significant concentration of dense musical sound usually referred to as ‘heaviness’. The publications for this thesis present approaches, processes and techniques for capturing, presenting and accentuating heaviness, as well as intelligibility and performance precision which facilitate the listener’s clear comprehension of the frequent overarching complexity in the music’s construction. Intelligibility and performance precision are the principal requirements for a high commercial standard of CMM, and additionally can enhance a production’s sense of heaviness. This synoptic commentary defines heaviness from an ecological perspective, by highlighting invariant properties that shape the embodied experience of being human. Heaviness is primarily substantiated through displays of distortion and, regardless of the listening levels involved, the fundamentals of this identity are ecologically linked to volume, power, energy, intensity, emotionality and aggression. In addition to distortion, a vital component of heaviness is sonic weight, which refers to CMM’s low frequencies being associated with large, intense and powerful entities. CMM’s heaviness is also considered in terms of the perceived proximity of activity, apparent size of performance environment, and level and type of energy being expended. In particular, CMM provides the listener with the sense of utmost proximity to the band, usually without any significant perspective of depth. Production strategies for achieving a high commercial standard in CMM are then presented. This is followed by a reflective commentary on the portfolio of productions, which includes discussion of the author’s transition from emulative to professional level of production and considers originality within this body of work. By presenting the subject as an important, valid and authentic scholarly discipline, this work bridges the gap between the worlds of academia and music production practice for this style.

Abstract:
In 1984, Stryper released its first album The Yellow and Black Attack and introduced audiences to a different kind of heavy metal. Instead of lyrics about sex, alcohol, and Satan, Stryper sang about Jesus, salvation, and God. While there were a number of fans ready for this change more were not. Members of the Church as well as members of the metal subculture were in agreement that Christianity and heavy metal were incompatible. Despite these objections, however, more bands emerged, and Christian metal became a significant genre within the Christian music industry. These bands presented Christian-oriented lyrics within the full spectrum of metal subgenres. This dissertation examines the ways in which Christian metal bands create an intersection between Christianity and the heavy metal subculture, infusing Christianity within the textual, visual, and musical structures of heavy metal. The author employs Deena Weinstein’s “metal code” to frame the analysis. The metal code includes the textual elements (band names, album and song titles, and song lyrics); the visual elements (band logos; album covers; and the various elements of the concert experience including the bands’ appearances, the staging, the interactions with the fans, and music videos); and the musical elements (timbre, modality, formal structure, and production of the songs and albums) that set metal apart from other musical genres. The dissertation also examines the concept of bands as “metal missionaries” that immerse themselves within the heavy metal subculture for the purpose of bringing the Christian message of hope and salvation. The author concludes that even though Christian metal bands modify aspects of elements that are otherwise incompatible with their Christian beliefs and message, they still maintain a sense of stylistic integrity that gives them credibility within the heavy metal subculture and allows them to fulfill their mission.

Kennedy, Lewis F. "Functions of genre in metal and hardcore music." Thesis, University of Hull, 2017. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:16545.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses various functions of genre in metal/hardcore music as a lens through which to study popular music in the twenty-first century. The thesis proposes that issues of genre are fundamental to understandings of popular music for all participants. Predominant in metal/hardcore discourse, genre serves as an organising principle in historiographies that exert significant influence upon contemporary perceptions of metal and hardcore. I propose generic symbiosis as a new way to conceptualise the relationship between metal and hardcore, addressing issues of consequentiality arising from extant frameworks. Exploring intra- and intergeneric connections, I observe the relationship between small- and largescale phenomena that allows a relatively specific group of performance techniques and compositional devices to connote numerous metal/hardcore genres (and vice versa). Within this interconnected model of genre, subgenres provide a middle ground of generic adaptation by providing a focus on specific small-scale phenomena. Genre may be understood as a general, amorphous concept in flux, while style affords specificity, and their relationship is analogous to that between type and token (where style tokens the genre type). Structured rhizomatically, scenes provide the literal and metaphorical space for such tokening, connecting physical instantiations to abstract notions. The internal rhetorical tensions of mainstream versus underground, and progression versus tradition, are demonstrated to function as a creative apparatus for participants. A manifestation of generic symbiosis, this apparatus provides the mechanism for generic adaptation as participants negotiate these tensions. Through a case study of twenty-first century metalcore, I observe the process of generic codification, outlining how a combination of specific elements of style, emerging from particular scenes, came to demarcate a genre. I show how adaptations within a single genre engender change in numerous other areas of metal/hardcore music culture, underscoring the interconnectivity of genre in popular music.

Abstract:

Allett, Nicola Faye. "'Love's labours' : extreme metal music and its feeling community." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2010. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3110/.

Full text
Abstract:
"'Love's Labours': Extreme Metal Music, and its Feeling Community" proposes an understanding of the nature of subcultural investments in music. It explores the distinct character of Extreme Metal music and the subcultural world that surrounds its fandom. In particular, it is concerned with the nature of attachments to and investments in subculture, investigating how fans feel part of a community, how identities are positioned and postured as 'Extreme Metal', and what processes and activities construct such identifications. Through qualitative research of a group of Extreme Metal fans, and drawing on a variety of theoretical concepts; it suggests that subcultural identities may be related to the processes of interaction and performance and the distinctive forms of subcultural habitus and expert labours linked to those activities. It further suggests that the fan/music relationship can be considered as a site of deep knowledges of 'self', performative labours and interpersonal relations in ways significantly more nuanced than previously theorised. It points to 'feeling' as a key feature of music fandom that provides the explanatory drive to take on, and embed oneself in, particular subcultural habitus, performances and kinship and thus subculture. It proposes that music subcultures can be understood as 'performative feeling communities' that anchor and forge forms of distinction.

Lucas, Olivia. "Loudness, Rhythm and Environment: Analytical Issues in Extreme Metal Music." Thesis, Harvard University, 2016. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:33493271.

Full text
Abstract:
Extreme metal music, with its consummate loudness and distortion, and intransigent culture of transgressiveness, resists analysis. This dissertation embraces extreme metal’s liveliness and channels it toward a broad cultural and musical analysis, exploring avenues of loudness, rhythm and ecocriticism. The study of extreme metal opens a window on liminal auralities, allowing the listener to encounter the thresholds of listening and the sheer physicality of sound. These aspects of the extreme metal listening experience open up a broader range of issues: the effects of loudness on the body and mind, the convergent mental and physical experiences of rhythmic complexity, and the sounding out of the often troubled relationship between humans and the natural world. Built as a series of case studies grounded in moments of sonic experience, the dissertation unearths issues essential to the analysis of extreme metal music and relevant to sonic practice more generally. The introductory chapter situates extreme metal in its current context, examining both the genre’s increasing institutionalization and the turbulent aspects of its history. Chapter 1 contemplates the embodied experience of extremely loud, low frequencies via an auto-ethnographic reading of a performance by the band Sunn O))). The second case study discusses the rhythmic practices of the band Meshuggah, discovering how unexpected beginnings, rotated riffs, and shifting metrical frameworks animate multiple sites of listening pleasure. Via the divergent work of the bands Botanist and Panopticon, the final chapter studies the range of possibilities for musical environmentalism, demonstrating how extreme metal can engage both apocalyptic and nostalgic modes of ecocriticism. Extreme metal challenges music theory to grapple with what is lost in the act of analysis and to find better ways of tackling the liveliness of musical experience – an issue by no means exclusive to extreme metal. The demands of approaching such an insistently loud, distorted musical practice press the theorist to develop language that expands analytical practice toward greater inclusion of embodied experiences, and to detect how multiple sites of listening pleasure converge and intertwine.

Barone, Stefano. "Fragile Scenes: Metal, Rap, and Electro in Post-Revolutionary Tunisia." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366023.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis analyses three youth cultures in contemporary Tunisia: metal, rap, and electro. Tunisia is a North-African country which has often been represented as a bridge between Europe and the Arab/Muslim world. It is a crossroad of cultural influences, and its complex situation of economic disadvantage and social inequality imposes peculiar conditions to the existence of local youth cultures and popular music scenes. Moreover, its history of dictatorship, and its 2011 revolution (which inaugurated the so-called Arab Springs), render it a locus of political and cultural struggle. For these reasons, the Tunisian context offers the possibility of expanding the research on youth culture beyond the much-covered West. The thesis is built upon data coming from a fieldwork research that was carried out for eleven months between 2014 and 2015. Data were collected through interviews with 70 participants in the three scenes (musicians, concert organisers, venue managers, journalists, fans); through participant observations at concerts, DJ sets, and other sites of scene interaction; and through the analysis of textual data coming from Internet websites, song lyrics, newspapers, and the like.

Abstract:
In this paper we apply the entrepreneurial effectuation theory (Sarasvathy 2001) and theories in expertise (Read & Sarasvathy 2005) in an empirical study in a particular context: musicianship as a form of entrepreneurship in the popular music industry. We apply the theories and empirical evidence in our framework by using a qualitative case study to analyze four ventures, four Finnish music groups. Based on the analysis we find extensions on Sarasvathy’s (2001) and Read and Sarasvathy’s (2005) work on three levels. First we find that the causation process is more typical in the “deliberate practice” (Read & Sarasvathy 2005) that forms the foundation for superior expert practice, which is a requirement for building novel and authentic cultural products. Secondly, we find that in the beginning of the business activities, these ventures are more effectual, when the situation tends to be resource-poor. We also find that even though the companies’ core teams are relatively small, once the business grows and the number of international partners increases the business processes and decisionmaking becomes inevitabely more causation driven.

Abstract:
Automatic music genre classification is the problem of associating mutually-exclusive labels to audio tracks. This process fosters the organization of collections and facilitates searching and marketing music. One approach for automatic music genre classification is to use diverse vector representations for each track, and then classify them individually. After that, a majority voting system can be used to infer a single label to the whole track. In this work, we evaluated the impact of changing the majority voting system to a meta-classifier. The classification results with the meta-classifier showed statistically significant improvements when related to the majority-voting classifier. This indicates that the higher-level information used by the meta-classifier might be relevant for automatic music genre classification.

"Music therapy as treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder: Systematic Review." In XIII Congresso Paulista de Neurologia. Zeppelini Editorial e Comunicação, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5327/1516-3180.178.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects social communication1 .Music is great for individuals with ASD, because it interacts with the brain, contributing with cognitive and psychosocial benefits2,3. Furthermore, music is emotional and promotes movement synchronization, being a non-pharmacological option for the treatment of ASD3 . Objective: To investigate the positive impacts of using music therapy for cognition in patients with ASD. Methodology: Controlled and randomized clinical trials, in English, performed on humans, in the last 5 years, indexed on PubMed, were selected from the descriptors “autism spectrum disorder” and “music therapy”. This review was registered on PROSPERO by protocol 254495 and the PRISMA recommendation was used to improve its organization. Results: Music therapy was efficient in improving the symptoms of children with ASD, because of the better sensitivity of individuals to music than words4 . In addition, music is able to restore brain connectivity, which is altered in TEA5 . Musical and emotional attunement allows synchronization, integrating the senses and affective regulation, improving self-awareness6. During therapy, there was a reduction in the diagnostic scale of ASD, indicating an improvement in communicative and social skills. Furthermore, it was noted that children became more socially responsive, but there were differences, suggesting the need to balance individual and methodological treatment7 . Finally, music therapy contributes to children’s well-being and health8,9. Conclusion: Evidence suggests that patients with ASD can benefit from music therapy, as it explores and expands the physical and mental limits of the autistic person, stimulating agility, communication and motor control.

Abstract:
The article examines the features of the use of new approaches to correctional and developmental work focused on children with mental and physical retardation, in particular, "sun children" (with Down syndrome) and "rain children" (with autism spectrum dis-order) in inclusive education. It highlights the theoretical material and owns view of the practical use of the synthesis of music and colour in the implementation of this activity. The paper elucidates the mental processes that occur during the processing of information in the hemispheres of the child's brain. It reveals the wave energy nature of colour and the associative relationship of colours with the sound of musical works. The light auditory and the creative-practical component of classes have been described. Particular emphasis has been placed on the "special" children’s characteristics of perception, behaviour and performance of colour music tasks. It has been shown that our proposed program of colour music therapy has a positive effect on the emotional sphere, improves the quality of communication, and enhances the ability to self-regulation, creative activity of children.

Duch, Michael. Performing Hanne Darboven's Opus 17a and long duration minimalist music. Norges Musikkhøgskole, August 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.22501/nmh-ar.481276.

Full text
Abstract:
Hanne Darboven’s (1941-2009) Opus 17a is a composition for solo double bass that is rarely performed due to the physical and mental challenges involved in its performance. It is one of four opuses from the composers monumental 1008 page Wünschkonzert (1984), and was composed during her period of making “mathematical music” based on mathematical systems where numbers were assigned to certain notes and translated to musical scores. It can be described as large-scale minimalism and it is highly repetitive, but even though the same notes and intervals keep repeating, the patterns slightly change throughout the piece. This is an attempt to unfold the many challenges of both interpreting, preparing and performing this 70 minute long solo piece for double bass consisting of a continuous stream of eight notes. It is largely based on my own experiences of preparing, rehearsing and performing Opus 17a, but also on interviews I have conducted with fellow bass players Robert Black and Tom Peters, who have both made recordings of this piece as well as having performed it live. One is met with few instrumental technical challenges such as fingering, string crossing and bowing when performing Opus 17a, but because of its long duration what one normally would take for granted could possibly prove to be challenging.
