Protopholeuon is a monospecific genus of Leptodirini, endemic to Romania, represented by Protopholeuon hungaricum, described incompletely by Csiki in 1904. In 1923, René Jeannel published a more comprehensive morphological description of the species, along with the first drawing of male genitalia. The type locality of the species is Lucia Cave, in the Metaliferi Mountains (Apuseni Mountains). This was the only locality where the species was found and collected. In the last decade, representatives of the genus Protopholeon were found in other caves of the Metaliferi Mo

Abstract This study focuses on terrestrial gastropod communities in a karst area, where the presence of water and the limestone generates favourable environment for land snails. Three limestone gorges were analysed located in the southeast of the Metaliferi Mountains. Four different habitats in three limestone gorges were analysed – Glodului, Cibului and Mada. A total of 42 species of land snails were identified. The terrestrial gastropod communities in the area are dominated by calciphile species, such as Granaria frumentum, Truncatellina cylindrica and Alopia bielzii madensis. The difference

Multiple criteria decision analysis, or MCDA, is a structured process for evaluating options with conflicting criteria and choosing the best solution. MCDA is similar to a cost-benefit analysis but evaluates numerous criteria, rather than just cost. It allows to identifying and comparing different options by assessing their impacts, performances, advantages, and disadvantages, leading to a consistent decision-making. In order to underline the benefits of this approach the paper presents a study case selected from the mining industry. The Certej gold mining project is located within the Apuseni

Lepidolite is one of a small number of minerals that contains a significant amount of lithium. Some areas, like the Apuseni and Metalifer Mountains in Romania, present dark red layers intercalated with reddish-yellow clay soils with interesting aspects. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis coupled with polarized light optical microscopy (POM) revealed that this dark red soil contains a large amount of fine microstructured lepidolite (24–35%) mixed with quartz sand and fine traces of kaolinite and muscovite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) elemental analysis revealed a typical clay composition w

AbstractThe occurrence of Hieracium glabrescens (F. W. Schultz) Murr in the Carpathians is confirmed after over a century by a new locality from the Apuseni Mountains in Romania. This locality, very significant from the phytogeographical point of view, is disjoined ca 500 km from the nearest Balkan localities of the species. The origin of H. glabrescens in the Apuseni Mountains is briefly discussed.

AbstractThe Romanian karst hosts numerous caves and shelters that over time provided remarkable archaeological and anthropological vestiges. Altogether they show that humans must have entered caves in Romania at least as early as 170,000 years ago. However, ancient human footprints are very rare in the fossil record of East-Central Europe, with only two known locations in the Apuseni Mountains of western Romania. Vârtop Cave site originally preserved three fossil footprints made about 67,800 years ago by a Homo neanderthalensis, whereas Ciur Izbuc Cave was probably home of early H. sapiens tha
