Full textThe Lemieux Dome and Sainte-Marguerite deposits are examples of epithermal and orogenic mineralization in Silurian-Devonian sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Gaspé Peninsula. During the Silurian-Devonian, the Gaspé Belt is interpreted as a back-arc setting that eventually transformed into a transpressive setting during the Acadian orogeny. Lemieux Dome veins display mineralogical features typical of low- to intermediate-sulfidation epithermal deposits. Mineralized veins hosted by Silurian-Devonian sedimentary rocks are related to the emplacement of bimodal Devonian volcanic rocks. Mineralisation is probably coeval with volcanic rocks eruption (lower to middle Devonian), before the Acadian orogeny. The Sainte-Marguerite deposit, associated to the Acadian Sainte-Florence fault, is hosted by the Sainte-Marguerite bimodal volcanic rocks. Mineralization forms in 5 stages: (1) a calcite-chlorite stage; (2) a quartz-pyrite stage; (3) a quartz-sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite ± arsenopyrite-adularia stage; (4) a quartz-arsenopyrite-pyrite-sphalerite stage and; (5) a quartz-carbonate stage. Stage 2 pyrite and quartz are recrystallized, indicating that sulfides formed early and were affected by Acadian metamorphism. Stage 2 pyrite and quartz were then cataclased and cemented by Stage 3 sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. Structural attitude of both Stage 3 and 4 veins is consistent with regional Acadian deformation during the middle to late Devonian (398 to 359 Ma), and suggests an epizonal orogenic affinity for Stage 3 and 4 mineralization, compatible with isotope and fluid inclusion data. δ18O, δ13C and microthermometric data in both deposits indicate that they were formed by infiltration of basinal brines at temperatures between 150 and 200°C. Lemieux Dome veins formed by mixing of the basinal brine with meteoric water. δ34S values and the lead isotope composition suggest that sulfur and metals were leached from surrounding sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Formation of both deposits in the Silurian-Devonian Gaspé Belt shows a mineral potential for pre-Acadian epithermal deposits, and for syn-Acadian epizonal orogenic deposits in other Silurian-Devonian rocks of the Appalachians.

Full textThis thesis presents a sociohistorical study of a particularly targeted resource region: the Gaspé Peninsula. The first objective is to shed light on the economic difficulties which have prevailed in this region from the crisis of the 30’s until today. The second objective is to take a critical look at the social and economic impact of the government policies which were applied to this region since The Quiet Revolution. By tracing back the peninsula’s significant development stages during the twentieth century, this research intends to show the important causal connection between a region historically known for its economic backwardness and the government interventions. The core of the thesis illustrates the difficulties linked to the rural nature of a community living in the fringes of a production system based on the free market and unlimited growth. To protect itself from the system’s inequities, the community even avoids governmental regulations which are applied irrespective of a redistribution to the poor. The analysis of social stakeholders, the structured trade between the government and the region, and the reciprocity of intellectual influences exerted between development practitioners and specialists have contributed to materialize a momentum which would facilitate a common vision of an endogenous development. The thesis identifies and examines the ideologies from which various development models originate (chapters VI and VII), actions taken in rural areas by the government, and identifies the local and national stakeholders supporting alternatives (bottom-up models) to the classic top-down model. Some characteristics of the model being considered tend to conclude that an economically challenged rural area like the Gaspé Peninsula cannot achieve its development by persisting in the neoliberal path and in a notion of prosperity based on trade growth. In this thesis, we are submitting that the order of priorities must change. Reorganizing the development of resource regions requires different methods and doctrines. It is mostly based on institutionalizing cooperation between stakeholders and is achieved under the banner of economic mutual aid and social solidarity. In chapter VIII, we show a region’s capacity to diagnose its problematic situation, to regroup its strengths and define a suitable development model. This model conciliates social and commercial economy, government and citizen participation, liberal and social democracies. The thesis states that the alliance between responsible entrepreneurship (relations between corporations) and social innovation are the components chosen par Gaspesian stakeholders to revitalise their region, economically and socially. We conclude by stating a reality that rises above theories and models: the Gaspé Peninsula was excluded from any development for almost a century. The region did not experience significant growth for quite some time. We outline that the peninsula, being geographically distant from post-war technological innovations and industrial machinery, was kept out of a wealth accumulation regime never seen in the history of capitalism. While the Gaspé Peninsula was kept aside, developed countries were creating economic links which accelerated industrial production and mass consumerism, consequently creating economics virtuous circles, depicted by Les Trente Glorieuses ("The Glorious Thirty", 1945-1975), a prosperous period from which the Gaspé Peninsula did not benefit. The benefits of the Fordist regime, where growth and productivity gain are shared between workers and employers, have also eluded the peninsula’s economic stakeholders. We will see that the government, as economic regulator, was not able to assert itself as arbitrator of the common good. Public policies have failed to contain the region’s decline...

Full textGaspé Peninsula (Québec, Canada) is made up of three distinct tectonostratigraphic domains: Cambro-Ordovician rocks, Siluro-Devonian rocks and Carboniferous. The objective of this study is to improve understanding of this petroleum system, through a geochemical approach coupled with a 2D modeling. Study of Rock-Eval 6 profiles of Siluro-Devonian bulk rocks suggests the presence of a significant amount of generated but not free petroleum products. To avoid overestimation of the oil potential, it appears necessary to analyze the kerogens. The study of kerogens extracts thus indicates that the Siluro-Devonian rocks have generated hydrocarbons without possibility to expel them. In addition, the kinetics parameters of thermal cracking of kerogens allowed the establishment of a decreasing curve of the HI, which can be compared to the curve measured in this study and enables to estimate the minimum height of eroded sediments during the last erosions that affected the northeastern Gaspé (4500 m). This estimated amount of erosion proved to be an important parameter during the numerical modeling. Thus, three scenarios were defined according to the thickness of eroded formations and assumptions of maximum burial, but also taking into account results on previous fission track analysis. If it is difficult to determine the best burial scenario that prevailed in the geological history of northeastern Gaspé, the convergence of results enable the establishment of the Cambro-Ordovician origin of the hydrocarbon, the provision of a reliable chronology of generation-expulsion-migration events, the estimation of the mass of hydrocarbons in play, and the location of accumulations over time

Full textThe growth of rockwall icings result from the gradual freezing of runoff on a cliff. In northern Gaspésie (Québec, Canada), sixty of these sometimes voluminous ice formations (over 3000 m3) were located near roads. Between 2000 and 2012, 440 interventions to remove ice blocks from the road were conducted by the “Ministère des Transports du Québec” (M.T.Q.). A better understanding of the growth, melt and collapse dynamics of rockwall icings is needed to improve the management of this natural hazard. Ice samples were collected and their microstructure analyzed by computed tomography and under cross polarized light. The ice volume evolution of four rockwall icings was studied using various thermodynamic models and validated from ice volume measurements made with LiDAR imaging. An ice blocks fall forecasting method was developed by comparing the timing of M.T.Q. interventions with meteorological data. The results were used to describe the growth mechanisms of four different types of ice formation found on rockwalls. The models showed that freezing of the water to cold air convection is the main process responsible for their growth. In spring, the melting rate of the ice cascade or frozen waterfall clearly depends on the sensible heat carried by the increasing water flow. The melting of the ice walls formed from the freezing of seeping water coming from underground water resurgences rather is the result of air convection and the radiation heat budget (Qrad). A simple model based on the calculation of the freezing, or melting, degree-hours was also effective for simulating the evolution of the north facing ice walls. Including Qrad to this model improved its performance and allowed accurate modeling of the south facing ice wall. Finally, the effects of meteorological variables on the occurrence of ice blocks falls were simulated using logistic models. By following the trends of the melting degree-days and the best statistical model, it is possible to forecast the collapse of some of the most problematic rockwall icings and target the most hazardous periods along northern Gaspésie roads. This study is an important step towards a more effective management of this natural hazard.
