Full textNew nanoporous metallic materials based on non-Pt group metals have been synthesized via dealloying of rapidly solidified alloys and aimed to demonstrate competitive catalytic performance in the field of direct alkaline fuel cells and SERS-active substrates. Nanostructured copper surface and nanoporous copper matrix with very fine morphology and specific surface area were obtained by chemical dealloying of bulk Cu90(HfZr)10 and melt-spun amorphous CuxCa100-x (x ranging from 35 to 80 at.%) family of alloys accordingly. Nanoporous silver and cobalt substrates were produced by dealloying of M38.75Cu38.75Si22.5 crystalline ribbons (M = Co and Ag) as a result of the removal of Cu and Si-rich phases. In addition to conventional characterization methods, all nanoporous structures have been reconstructed by FIB-nanotomography, clearly exposing the morphological diversity of the three systems with transversal porosity when visualized and color-mapped in 3D by a special numerical tomography tool. It is for the first time that a practical significance of these materials has been explored in the scope of self-supported anodic catalysts, suggested throughout this study as an alternative to the unstable Pt-based carbon-supported commercial composites. Half-cell electrochemical tests demonstrated an excellent catalytic activity towards the oxidation of a borane fuel and superior stability of functioning in the alkaline environment compared to Pt/C catalyst. In similar conditions, nanoporous Co showed higher efficiency but lower stability, attributed to the complex chemical composition of its porous scaffold. Nanoporous Cu has not been exploited for the mentioned applications due to its high brittleness and is suggested to go through improvements on the step of precursor synthesis. Lastly, while exploring the mechanical behavior of the NPMs by instrumented nanoindentation of different nanoporous Ag substrates, a load-displacement dependence phenomenological model has been suggested for this class of metallic materials

Full textThe aim of this study is to understand the influence of the deposition process on the metallurgical state and the mechanical and anti-corrosion properties of the nanostructured Ni-W alloys. Two processes are performed to obtain our alloys : the electrodeposition and the magnetron sputtering. A combination of several microstructural techniques at different scales has permitted the characterization of the morphology, the grain size, the crystallographic texture, the nature of grain boundaries and the concentrations of alloying elements. According to the elaboration process, the relationship between the W content and the metallurgical parameters is very different. A stronger influence of W is observed for the electrodeposited coatings by comparison with the alloys obtained by sputtering. The properties of the coatings are studied with microhardness measurements and electrochemical tests (polarization curve and electrochemical spectroscopy impedance). An increase of the microhardness is mainly observed with the decrease of grain size and the increase of tungsten content. But, the highest values of microhardness are always obtained for the highest tungsten content and not necessarily for the lowest grain size. So, a limit for the increase of microhardness with the decrease of grain size is put forward. The study of the electrochemical reactivity for the alloys in acidic media have shown a dominating role of the tungsten that depend on the pH, the studied domain and the reaction path associated with the corrosion process. The surface morphology and the structural defects have also an important influence on the reactivity of the Ni-W alloys that can exceed the impact of solute. As compared, the others metallurgical parameters (grain size, texture, grain boundaries and contamination) seem to have a minor influence on the electrochemical behavior

Full textThis work deals with the arrangement of the rural ancient space. Within a radius of twenty kilometres around the small town of argentomagus (Saint-Marcel, Indre). Four elements of the landscape are studied: roads, networks of parcels, dwelling places and, iron and steel workshops, which are very numerous in this area. Several methods have been used: study of vertical aerial photographs of the national geographic institue (ign), aerial surveys, oral inquiries and ground focused and systematic surveys. 283 sites are known today, 40% of them were discovered between 1990 and 1993. Thanks to the comparison of the diverse types of settlements, the organisation of this rural area is nowadays better known; it is especially true for the links between agriculture and metallurgy, which can be mixed or not. Traces of several networks of parcels have also been found. During the whole roman period, the evolutions of argentomagus and of its surrounding area often appear linked. The local economy, especially the iron and steel industry, was certainly organised by the town, where a factory of weapons was established during the late roman empire

Full textIn the case of the turbocharger housings machining (milling, drilling and tapping operations) made of heatresistant austenitic stainless steel (HRASS), the tools life is greatly altered compared to standard steels ofequivalent mechanical resistance. Therefore, the machining cost of such pieces, including the cutting tools, constitutes a significant amount of their total cost. Concerning the drilling, the severity of the machining isincreased and even more since it relies on stepped, complex and expensive one-piece tools. This PhD project aims to develop a new cutting geometry optimized for the HRASS drilling. In thisperspective, a characterization of the cutting tool is carried out based on one hand on the local cutting forcesanalysis from a global cutting forces discretization during the drill tip penetration, and also on the initial chipformation. Then, an in-situ analysis of the cumulative strain hardening of the machined subsurface layer is alsocarried out using an identification of the incremental equivalent plastic strain. All the performed analysescontribute to the understanding of the strain hardening/machinability relationship for the tool life improvementof the HRASS dedicated drills
