Full textNew nanoporous metallic materials based on non-Pt group metals have been synthesized via dealloying of rapidly solidified alloys and aimed to demonstrate competitive catalytic performance in the field of direct alkaline fuel cells and SERS-active substrates. Nanostructured copper surface and nanoporous copper matrix with very fine morphology and specific surface area were obtained by chemical dealloying of bulk Cu90(HfZr)10 and melt-spun amorphous CuxCa100-x (x ranging from 35 to 80 at.%) family of alloys accordingly. Nanoporous silver and cobalt substrates were produced by dealloying of M38.75Cu38.75Si22.5 crystalline ribbons (M = Co and Ag) as a result of the removal of Cu and Si-rich phases. In addition to conventional characterization methods, all nanoporous structures have been reconstructed by FIB-nanotomography, clearly exposing the morphological diversity of the three systems with transversal porosity when visualized and color-mapped in 3D by a special numerical tomography tool. It is for the first time that a practical significance of these materials has been explored in the scope of self-supported anodic catalysts, suggested throughout this study as an alternative to the unstable Pt-based carbon-supported commercial composites. Half-cell electrochemical tests demonstrated an excellent catalytic activity towards the oxidation of a borane fuel and superior stability of functioning in the alkaline environment compared to Pt/C catalyst. In similar conditions, nanoporous Co showed higher efficiency but lower stability, attributed to the complex chemical composition of its porous scaffold. Nanoporous Cu has not been exploited for the mentioned applications due to its high brittleness and is suggested to go through improvements on the step of precursor synthesis. Lastly, while exploring the mechanical behavior of the NPMs by instrumented nanoindentation of different nanoporous Ag substrates, a load-displacement dependence phenomenological model has been suggested for this class of metallic materials

Full textThe aim of this study is to understand the influence of the deposition process on the metallurgical state and the mechanical and anti-corrosion properties of the nanostructured Ni-W alloys. Two processes are performed to obtain our alloys : the electrodeposition and the magnetron sputtering. A combination of several microstructural techniques at different scales has permitted the characterization of the morphology, the grain size, the crystallographic texture, the nature of grain boundaries and the concentrations of alloying elements. According to the elaboration process, the relationship between the W content and the metallurgical parameters is very different. A stronger influence of W is observed for the electrodeposited coatings by comparison with the alloys obtained by sputtering. The properties of the coatings are studied with microhardness measurements and electrochemical tests (polarization curve and electrochemical spectroscopy impedance). An increase of the microhardness is mainly observed with the decrease of grain size and the increase of tungsten content. But, the highest values of microhardness are always obtained for the highest tungsten content and not necessarily for the lowest grain size. So, a limit for the increase of microhardness with the decrease of grain size is put forward. The study of the electrochemical reactivity for the alloys in acidic media have shown a dominating role of the tungsten that depend on the pH, the studied domain and the reaction path associated with the corrosion process. The surface morphology and the structural defects have also an important influence on the reactivity of the Ni-W alloys that can exceed the impact of solute. As compared, the others metallurgical parameters (grain size, texture, grain boundaries and contamination) seem to have a minor influence on the electrochemical behavior

Full textThis work deals with the arrangement of the rural ancient space. Within a radius of twenty kilometres around the small town of argentomagus (Saint-Marcel, Indre). Four elements of the landscape are studied: roads, networks of parcels, dwelling places and, iron and steel workshops, which are very numerous in this area. Several methods have been used: study of vertical aerial photographs of the national geographic institue (ign), aerial surveys, oral inquiries and ground focused and systematic surveys. 283 sites are known today, 40% of them were discovered between 1990 and 1993. Thanks to the comparison of the diverse types of settlements, the organisation of this rural area is nowadays better known; it is especially true for the links between agriculture and metallurgy, which can be mixed or not. Traces of several networks of parcels have also been found. During the whole roman period, the evolutions of argentomagus and of its surrounding area often appear linked. The local economy, especially the iron and steel industry, was certainly organised by the town, where a factory of weapons was established during the late roman empire

Full textIn the case of the turbocharger housings machining (milling, drilling and tapping operations) made of heatresistant austenitic stainless steel (HRASS), the tools life is greatly altered compared to standard steels ofequivalent mechanical resistance. Therefore, the machining cost of such pieces, including the cutting tools, constitutes a significant amount of their total cost. Concerning the drilling, the severity of the machining isincreased and even more since it relies on stepped, complex and expensive one-piece tools. This PhD project aims to develop a new cutting geometry optimized for the HRASS drilling. In thisperspective, a characterization of the cutting tool is carried out based on one hand on the local cutting forcesanalysis from a global cutting forces discretization during the drill tip penetration, and also on the initial chipformation. Then, an in-situ analysis of the cumulative strain hardening of the machined subsurface layer is alsocarried out using an identification of the incremental equivalent plastic strain. All the performed analysescontribute to the understanding of the strain hardening/machinability relationship for the tool life improvementof the HRASS dedicated drills

Full textThe aim of this study is to understand the influence of the metallurgical state on the mechanical and anti-corrosion properties of electrodeposited nanostructured Ni-W alloys, in which the grain size can be extended towards nanometric scale by the tungsten addition. Citrate-ammonium baths were used to obtain the alloys by applying direct and pulse currents. A combination of several microstructural techniques at different scales (SEM, EBSD, TEM and XRD) has permitted the characterization of the morphology, the grain size, the crystallographic texture and the nature of grain boundaries. Concentrations of alloying element and contaminants were determined using several techniques such as EDX, GDOES, SIMS, µ-XRF and hot extraction analysis. The obtained results show that tungsten incorporation leads to grain refinement but also to other microstructural changes (morphology or crystallographic texture) and to different levels of contamination. In order to separate the influence of the different metallurgical parameters on the mechanical and corrosion properties, an innovative process was proposed using annealing treatments under controlled atmosphere to vary the microstructure without modifying the tungsten concentration. In addition to the influence of the grain size on the hardness evolution in alloys, the Hall-Petch relationship is also strongly dependent on the incorporation of light elements and tungsten. The study of the polarization curves in acidic and alkaline deaerated solutions revealed that the tungsten addition plays an important role on the electrochemical reactivity in both anodic and cathodic domains and that the other metallurgical parameters such as grain size intervene only at second order

Full textThe range of fine wire products marketed by METALOR is based on silver, copper and palladium alloys with high electrical and mechanical performance, such as the NOVAE1 product which has a mechanical strength of 1.3 GPa and an electrical conductivity of 17 % IACS. The objective of this study is to understand the metallurgical mechanisms behind these characteristics and to take advantage of them in order to propose a new range of alloys with improved conductivity while maintaining high mechanical strength. The preliminary study carried out on the Cu-Pd binary system highlights the presence of the βCuPd phase below 600 °C, whose electrical conductivity is estimated at 30 % IACS. This phase is experimentally highlighted in the NOVAE1 fine wire and its formation is associated with an 8 % IACS increase in conductivity. It could therefore be a promising answer for the development of new alloys. Targeted experiments were carried out on seven grades of alloys developed and annealed for several months at 727 °C and 550 °C and then characterized by microprobe, XRD and SEM. These new data allow to refine the thermodynamic description of the Ag-Cu-Pd ternary system, in particular the miscibility gap, consisting of the two solid solutions cfc α1 and α2 and the extension of the βCuPd phase in the ternary system. The multi-scale characterization of the fine NOVAE1 wire highlights the complex, three-phase and nanostructured structure of the sample. These observations allow the development of phenomenological models of the mechanical and electrical properties of the wires by considering a matrix consisting of an Ag-rich α1 phase, associated with a soft phase in which are included hard phase domains rich in Cu and Pd, α2 and βCuPd. The wire characteristics are thus evaluated according to their chemical composition. This highlights the key parameters of the system: phase proportions, grain sizes, elastic modulus of the soft phase and electrical properties of the phases

Full textZirconium alloys are used as cladding materials in PWR. As they are submitted to very extreme conditions, it is necessary to check their behaviour and especially to make sure they meet the safety criteria. They are therefore studied under typical in service-loadings but also under accidental loadings. In one of these accidental scenarios, the cladding temperature may increase above 800°C, in a steam environment, and decrease before a final quench of the cladding. During this temperature transient, the cladding is heavily oxidised, and the metallurgical changes leads to a decrease of the post quench mechanical properties. It is then necessary to correlate this drop in residual ductility to the metallurgical evolutions. This is the problem we want to address in this study. As oxygen goes massively into the metallic part - a zirconia layer grows at the same time – during the high temperature oxidation, the claddings tubes microstructure shows three different phases with various mechanical properties. In order to reproduce the behaviour of this multi-layered material, the first part of this study consisted in creating samples with different oxygen contents, similar to those observed in the different phases of the real cladding. The study was especially focused on the phase transformation upon cooling. A mechanism was proposed to describe this phase transformation. Then, these materials were mechanically tested at various temperatures and for various mean oxygen contents. It was thus possible to start some preliminary finite element calculations to describe the cladding behaviour under the standard technological ring compression test

Full textEuropean engineering companies for blast furnace technologies are increasingly challenged by competitors out of emerging countries. In reaction to this, European companies need to develop a specific strategic sales behaviour, which the author analyses, based on professional experience. Innovation, as a core element in that process is thus traded through “technology diffusions” where the transfer vehicle is the hardware and not the intellectual property rights. The reasons of such approach are analyzed where Europeans engineering companies put apart the traditional intellectual property protection models

Full textDuring the past decade, the automotive industry is increasingly relying on new grades of high strength steels. Companies involved in this sector aim to produce lighter, more effective vehicles that are both fuel-efficient and guarantee a high level of safety for its passengers. New structures have emerged on the market presenting an opportune correlation between high mechanical resistance and ductility. However, this increase in mechanical properties is most often achieved at the expense of the machinability of steels in question. The results of previous works have motivated a detailed study that focuses on the influence of the metallic structure on the machinability of steels. The work compares the behavior of low-carbon steels obtained by controlled cooling with that of a conventional steel in both the quenched and tempered state and the bainitic state. The thermomechanical conditions at the tool / chip interface during cutting are identified by measuring the cutting forces and investigating the chips morphology and microstructure. The cutting-tool life expectancy is quantified and the different modes of insert wear are studied

Full textThe new mechatronic technologies can significantly reduce the energy consumption and gas emissions of personal cars, by introducing rupture innovations in electrified powertrains complementarily or alternatively to combustion engines. The power electronics assemblies used in starter-alternator systems use solder joints which need to be substituted with lead-free solder in agreements with international standards. This thesis contributes to the metallurgical and mechanical characterization of two tin-based lead-free solder joints. These joints are produced industrially with a Die Laser Soldering process which leads to heterogeneous solidification microstructures, poorly reproducible, multiphased, and with defects. The objective of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of the solder joints lifetime during thermomechanical aging. Thermal aging generates stresses and plastic deformation due to the mismatch in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the different layers of the assemblies. Isotropic constitutive laws were identified from an experimental database of tensile tests on bulk specimens. Those constitutive laws were used in finite element simulations in order to assess the negative effect of the solder joint porosity, inherent flaw traced back to the soldering process. Aging tests coupled with observations of the microstructure evolution have shown the influence of tin grains orientation on crack initiation. The heterogeneity of the microstructure prevents us from proposing a representative volume element of the materials. An inverse method has been implemented in parallel with the development of an in situ bending test bench under a profilometer in order to build the first steps for the mechanical characterization of industrial solder joints

Full textThis study allowed the design of a methodology and the development of a tool dedicated to the numerical simulation of induction superficial hardening applied to crankshafts. This work was realised in the frame of a research and development project of the crankshaft manufacturer Krupp Mavilor aiming at the optimisation of the heat treatment with regards to fatigue resistance of the parts. An important part of the study was in the modeling of the metallurgical behavior of steel during rapid thermal kinetics. After a dilatometric study, the different phase transformations were modeled accounting for the influence of the homogenization of the austenite on the materials behavior during quenching. In order to account for the specifics of the heat treatment of crankshafts, dedicated software relying on three finite element software - FLUX2D for electromagnetic and thermal phases, METAL7 for the metallurgy and MSC MARC for the mechanical phase - and on specific developments was presented. The complete physical phenomenon - electromagnetic, thermal, metallurgical and mechanical - along with the main interactions due to the process were accounted for. The thermo-mechanical behavior of the steel was simplified and accounts only for the main phenomenon leading to the residual stresses. After validation of the simulation tool on a test case and on the reference hardening process, a first optimization, based on energetic and metallurgical considerations, was proposed. An experimental hardening set-up was designed to validate the work with reproducible and controlled experimental conditions. The metallurgical results show a good agreement between numerical and experimental results. The numerical and experimental results show similar trends in the residual stresses even though the stress levels are different. This thesis is concluded by the interesting perspectives of use of the methodology and the dedicated software as an optimization tool

Full textThe objective of our work is to analyse the historical mutations of corporate culture by founding our opinion on the study of a particular corporation ( whose last denomination is renault vehicules industriels-limoges ) from the 50's up till 1993. Our approach consists in showing corporate culture as the result of a particular and changing arrangement ( or of a "configuration" according to the meaning norbert elias gives to this term ) according to the nature of productions and of the customers of the corporation, the composition and history of its labour force, the inner organization of labour ( particularly the relationships between the supervisory staff and operators as well as the varying degree of autonomy resulting from this for the latter ). We analyse the corporation as a generalized system of exchanges based upon economic goods such as wages but also upon more social or symbolical goods or services : career opportunities, work atmosphere, personnal recognition, prestige, etc. . . This system of exchanges feeds itself on individual or group contributions ( for example, directors, managers, foremen, trade-unionists ) that structure the social assembly constituted by the corporation. We show that it is the individuals or the groups who bring more into the exchange that get recognized as a kind of moral leadership that we have called "hegemony" in reference to gramsci. These individuals or groups : senior workers and foremen first, then, trade-unionists and, finally, directors and managers, obtain, as a set-off against their services, the right to draw up "the rules of the game" which constitute the corporate culture

Full textThe feedstock shortening is a major challenge for the photovoltaic industry. Among the possible routes from metallurgical grade to solar grade silicon, the plasma refining to reduce the boron content, combined with segregations to remove the metallic pollutants seems very promising. The plasma process combines electromagnetic stirring of the molten silicon with the boron volatilization by the reactive species produced by the plasma. The boron volatilization has been studied via thermodynamic calculations thanks to the FactSage code, and the chemical on line analysis of the volatilised pollutants in the flue gases of the process by ICP-OES. The electromagnetic stirring has been the subject of a numeric and experimental study. The distribution of reactive species onto the surface has been investigated replacing liquid silicon with a graphite target. The optimized process permitted the production of silicon with reduced boron content. The chemical and electrical characterisations of the refined and crystallised material have showed too high concentrations of aluminium, oxygen and phosphorus. However the life time of minority carriers was comprised between 20 and 50 µs and cells with efficiency above 14% have been produced
