ABSTRACT: This final project creates its proposal over a concentrated view of the medieval part of Setúbal. An historic zone with strong characteristics and with a great potential for progress, nevertheless it has been forgotten over the years increasing the obsolescence of its buildings. The strategy it´s created on neighborhood of Fontainhas and São Domingos, old fishing districts, where the present of obsolete it’s more significative, both physically with the degradation of the buildings, as atmospheric, where the lake of residents and the absence of services affect the human life in the neighborhood and consequently in the spaces maintenance. The strategy as developed with a principal objective of restoring the neighborhood life of this place. A method to bring new population, without losing the usual atmosphere of a piscatorial district where everybody lives in community. The found solution that is developed in this thesis, it’s the creation of leisure spaces that are directly connected to the habitations, allowing them to work as a community terrace, providing meeting and sharing between residents. In overall, the strategy boils down on a secondary system of circulation, with a more private character, inside of the neighborhood, that go through public buildings and courtyards. Its creation involves the construction of courtyards, in the urban voids that exists inside the city blocks and the transformation of the obsolete buildings. In order to guarantee the viability of the new routes and courtyards, these in addition to interconnecting the spaces and singular buildings in the neighborhood, as such the Church of Boa Hora, The Convent of São Domingos, the cemetery and the sightseeing of Fontainhas, there is also the transformation of the obsolete buildings, that is previously mentioned, given then a more public use, as a market, restaurants, etc., as a way to attracted population and giving the possibility to cross inside the city blocks and streets.

ABSTRACT: The city-river bond reveals an important facet of the identity and growth of the riverside region. It allows the city to open up to the water and to build a symbolic space between the territory and the human figure. This project formalizes the desire to transform the urban structure of Setúbal and bring it closer to the river under the internal awareness of it’s identity and memory. In a careful analisys, we reveal the suports on which the city has developed, exposing a growing conquest over the river. Nowadays, this piece of land conquered to the water is a fragmented and unconsolidated space, which is a result of the lack of cohesive growth of the city, specialy the port and industrial areas. These port structures disjointed with the city create the opportunity to rethink the urban morfology and their relation with the river. Based on this historical reference, we propose a reflection on the main reasons for the progressive distance between the city and the river along the years. The project approach explores a vision for the city articulating theory and practice, reading and project, based on an exercise in urban and architectural composition. This riverside transformation rewards it’s memory and vestiges of identity barelly immersing on the territory. The project focus on the waterfront area of Bairro das Fontainhas as an object of study where the scale and monumetalization of the water is explored. The proposal develops different relationships between the water and the built space, influencing people’s behavior towards their use of the place. That said, we propose a new formal and funtional existence, built with the identity and memory of the place, grating it new spacialities capable of lasting over time. “… a arquitetura é o único meio de que dispomos para conservar vivo um laço com um passado ao qual devemos a nossa identidade e que é constitutivo do nosso ser.” (CHOAY, 2015, pág.. 147)

My central thesis is that fantastic motifs work on a metaphorical level to encapsulate and express ideologies that have frequently been naturalised as 'truths'. I develop a theory of motif metaphors in order to examine the ideologies generated by the fantastic motif of metamorphosis in a range of contemporary children's and young adult fantasy texts. Although fantastic metamorphosis is an exceptionally prevalent and powerful motif in children's and young adult fantasy literature, symbolising important ideas about change and otherness in relation to childhood, adolescence, and maturation, and conveying important ideologies about the world in which we live, it has been little analysed in children's literature criticism. The detailed analyses of particular metamorphosis motif metaphors in this study expand and refine our academic understanding of the metamorphosis figure and consequently provide insight into the underlying principles and particular forms of a variety of significant ideologies.
By examining several principal metamorphosis motif metaphors I investigate how a number of specific cultural beliefs are constructed and represented in contemporary children's and young adult fantasy literature. I particularly focus upon metamorphosis as a metaphor for childhood otherness; adolescent hybridity and deviant development; maturation as a process of self-change and physical empowerment; racial and ethnic difference and otherness; and desire and jouissance. I apply a range of pertinent cultural theories to explore these motif metaphors fully, drawing on the interpretive frameworks most appropriate to the concepts under consideration. I thus employ general psychoanalytic theories of embodiment, development, language, subjectivity, projection, and abjection; poststructuralist, social constructionist, and sociological theories; and wide-ranging literary theories, philosophical theories, gender and feminist theories, race and ethnicity theories, developmental theories, and theories of fantasy and animality. The use of such theories allows for incisive explorations of the explicit and implicit ideologies metaphorically conveyed by the motif of metamorphosis in different fantasy texts.
In this study, I present a number of specific analyses that enhance our knowledge of the motif of fantastic metamorphosis and of significant cultural ideologies. In doing so, I provide a model for a new and precise approach to the analysis of fantasy literature.

Full textFaced with so many transformations in the world in our century, be they in society, in philosophy, in sociology and in religion, it is challenging to talk about the human development in its most difficult phases, which are pre-adolescence and adolescence. Adolescents who ask: What is life and why am I living? Through an image of nature we compare their internal and external transformations with those of the metamorphosis of a caterpillar which transforms into a butterfly gaining wings to fly. How to help adolescents to face their existential questions and to develop in a healthy way in order to fly on the wings of the spirit? We describe the quest for spirituality as the main answer to all these questionings and we direct them to a spiritual itinerary in order to live out this spirituality in fullness: Flying on the Wings of the Spirit.

Full textThis study aims to understand the process of identity formation and transformation with monozygotic twins. We intend to analyze how the identity of two twin brothers develops along their life course, considering that both shared the same historical and social context, constituted by structural conditioning factors represented by the family, school, community and society institutions. The identity proposal as a metamorphosis in search of emancipation developed by Prof. Dr. Antonio da Costa Ciampa (1987), was our guiding line for the accomplishment of this research. We chose the life history narrative method to deepen the understanding of the dynamics of the two twin brothers identity formation; in this research they are named Ricardo and Rogério, they are now 50 years old, and are born, raised and living in the city of São Paulo-SP . The study of the identity formation processes involved the primary socialization, focused on the childhood phase and the beginning of school life, as well as the secondary socialization, focused on the period of career choices, beginning of professional life and current life and career moment

Full textThis research broaches the implementation of quality management in Tunisian colleges, particularly in the field of engineering. The case study is a college which experimented with this approach, sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education. Quality is the spearhead of the Tunisian administration so as to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country and to the competitiveness of Tunisian higher education. . The implementation was embedded in the TQM framework and methodology that are outlined in the first part of the dissertation, as an international norm and standard. It enables a teleological implementation of quality management, resulting in getting the accreditation by importing a western and global approach to quality. This method structures the quality of products and processes and drives the operation management. However, we assume that there is a need for an axiologic axis to supplement the teleological axis in Tunisia so as to propose an integrated approach to quality management, which requires designing a compatible theoretical and methodological framework. Our research shows that the socio-economic approach to integrated quality management is required to enable such compatibility. The intervention methodology doesn’t consist in defining quality only through the objectives, but through the conditions and possibilities of change, and through transforming the very underpinnings and infrastructure of the organizations so as to better reach the objectives

This article regards the evolution of fish farms at Tai-jiang in Tainan, is obedient to a logic for urban transformation, makes people deprived of home. Based on official documents, journalism, online information, as well as participant observation and indepth interview, the marina nature in Tai-jiang is described and historical examined how to become urban nature. From Socio Nature and Scale Politics of view, the reconstruction of urban-region is to maintain urban centrality by depredation which is launched by the local regime. It made each components of fish farms unassembled and lose an opportunity for recovery of socio-ecoloy in Tai-jiang. Fish farms is always increasing more effort and cost to keep their components stable. Nevertheless, the expanding progress faces act of god more and more (e.g, inundation, pollution). Their components are eareaed for urban growth, and fish farms are losing coordination against nature force . Urban regime has to invest more policy resource and capital to deal the collapse, as well as Tai-jiang must depend on urban centrality more. Urban growth also needs support from the new-middle bourgeoisie who live in urban center area, and Fish farms are finally becoming a object what is gazed by them. Conservation and recreation ,bourgeoisie likes, destroy the connect between the components for city-expand . However, Yuguang Island was defense-zone for national security in the past, and now is as the front battlespace where all kind of development power including conservation and recreation. They offer the local actors opportunities to imagine other socio-ecological blueprints except tourism and real estate.

With his grotesque style, Kafka demonstrates an absurd world in his novels. By means of metamorphosis—a writing technique, Kafka dissects modernity into loneliness, despair, fear and identity confusion caused by alienation. Based on the relations among self, others and society in Metamorphosis, this thesis will conduct literary investigations into three forms of transformations: physiology, psychology, and economy. In his work “The Tattooer”, Japanese writer Junichiro Tanizaki vividly portrays the overwhelming power of art. Seikichi, the tattooer, surrenders himself to this power, experiencing self-alienation from his past, achieving and losing his value of being. Through the spider tattoo, Seikichi helps the female protagonist to become a woman, forcing her to be mature. Although the girl does not change at all in appearance, spiritually, she transforms from a geisha-to-be into a femme fatale whose character is in accordance with the spider. That manifests the psychological transformation “prompted” by the tattoo and moreover, reinforces the reverse of gender and sado-masochistic relationship between Seikichi and his client. Likewise, in “A Stick”, Kobo Abe employs the same technique to transform a human being into a substance so that he can further disclose the alienated destiny modern people have to encounter in reality. By the idea of “punishment” to the stick, the writer retrospects human’s negative attitude toward life when facing the dilemma of existence then further expresses his positive and active attitude in a deal with the issue of alienation. Through different forms and different degrees of metamorphoses, the above mentioned writers discuss the questions of existing condition, freedom and outlet for emotion in consideration of alienation, showing their great concerns to human destiny, life significance and humanistic spirit as well as their endless pursuit of the profound value for the existence.

In this study, the three approaches such as self-narrative, interview, and file data were applied. The aim was to analyze the transformation experience of me, a mother of Hsiao-Gu (alias), a senior high student with hearing loss. The study participants included Hsiao-Gu’s grandma and me. The personal life experience was written in the first-person mode, and the holistic-content narrative analysis method was adopted to explore the text information collected. Meeting the study purpose, the results of this study are stated below. 1. Initial reactions after knowing that my child has hearing loss: The initial reactions included the denial and anger while being informed of the possibility of my child’s hearing loss, the anxiety while waiting for the medical exam result, and the self-blame and sadness while recalling my child’s no imitation and interaction during the babbling stage. 2. In the process of educating my child with hearing loss, my resilience owing to psychological adjustment included three stages, i.e., the dilemma between religion and medicine, the tough road during the rehabilitation progress, and the thrilling time during my child’s schoolhood. In each stage, the psychological adjustment was made in the process of initial finding and suspicion. And, through the struggles in the process and the outcomes obtained, persistence and the resilience in the process of my educating the child were displayed. 3. There were the relevant factors that facilitated the transformation experience of the mother of the senior high student with hearing loss, such as personal traits, and family and social support, including personal introspection and growth, family's economic and spiritual support, schools' and professionals' economic assistance, arrangement of learning courses for the children with hearing loss, friends' encouragement and consensus, and hearing impaired children's participation in extracurricular activities, etc. 4. The meanings of my transformation experience of being a mother of a senior high student with hearing loss are described as follows: overcoming the inherent prejudices and accepting others’ suggestions as well as promoting social welfare. Hence, it was found in this study that the transformation experience improved my experiencing and comprehension of life, enhanced my coping ability in facing the difficulties, and assisted me to face the challenges courageously in the future. The implications of the study results: The transformation experience of the mother of the senior high student with hearing loss could remind other mothers of a child with hearing loss to overcome their own prejudice and accept others’ suggestions, ask for the assistance from social welfare, face the difficulties courageously, have an attitude of learning and growing with the child, broaden the vision, and learn to grow and make metamorphosis positively in frustrations.

Morphing is a powerful technique to produce a shape transformation between two or more existing models.Morphing and warping have various applications ranging from special effects in the entertainment industry to medical imaging and scientific visualization. Not surprisingly, morphing and warping have received a lot of interest lately. They have been the cores of fundamental operations in computer graphics. This thesis describes a new integrated scheme for metamorphosis between two closed manifold genus-0 polyhedral models. This new morphing scheme includes several novel techniques. In the correspondence establishment process, spherical parameterizations of the source and target models are created first. To control the morphing, several feature vertex pairs are specified and a fold-over free warping method is presented to align two spherical embeddings. In the transformation process, the proposed method does not create a merged meta-mesh or execute re-meshing to construct a common connectivity for morphs. Alternatively, a novel technique for the connectivity transformation of two spherical parameterizations is employed to generate the intermediate meshes. This technique dynamically adds or removes vertices to gradually transform the connectivity of 3D polyhedrons from a source model into a target model and simultaneously creates the intermediate shapes. In addition, a priority control function provides the animators to control arising or dissolving of input models’ features in a morphing sequence. This is a useful tool to control a morphing sequence more easily and flexibly. Furthermore, a novel semi-overlay with a geomorph scheme is proposed to reduce the popping effects caused by the connectivity transformation. We demonstrate several examples of aesthetically pleasing morphing sequences using the proposed scheme. Besides the mesh metamorphosis, this thesis introduces the feature-based image warping and applies the image warping techniques in the medical image interpolation. This interpolation method is named shape-based feature-guided medical image interpolation. The proposed method is an effective and improved method. It integrates feature line-segments to guide the shape-based method for better shape interpolation. An automatic method for finding these line segments is given. The proposed interpolation method can manage translation, rotation and scaling situations when the slices have similar shapes. It can also interpolate intermediate shapes when the successive slices do not have similar shapes.

Greek mythology is the foundation of Europe literature. Ovid (43BC.-18AD.), who is good at describing the mindsets of characters, completed “Metamorphoses” with the special “deforming” point of view thru the mythology and made it become a masterpiece where the world finds the best interpretation of the mythology from. “Deforming” can be regarded as the talk between the soul and the flesh, the communication between "metaphysical" and "physical", the collision between spirit and material. “Metamorphoses” has been one of the databanks for the heathenism topics, which are favored by artists. After Industrial Revolution, the science has rapid and huge progresses, Capitalism and city culture reveals its corruption, human are surrounded by machines. Human’s anxiety and doubts about future and the changeable society, being helpless, powerless and angry, bring the Surrealism to the world again to find humans another exit. Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis and Die Traumdeutung emerged at this moment and became the age leading methodology. Surrealism, influenced by Sigmund Freud’s Die Traumdeutung, started to twist or break the limitation of formality via the concept of deforming and managed to reveal the transformation of psychological status affecting physical status or physical status failing to control psychological status via interpreting the deforming of light, darkness and the scene. Therefore, this research is an inquiry into Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” to mull over the concept of transformation and its effect on western art. With regard to the “Metamorphoses” it represents an idea about “corporeal deformation without but spiritual uniform within”, and I shall study the relation between which and the psyche of surrealism. In the history of visual art, Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” has tremendous influence and has been leveraged by many art designers till today, who might not even be aware of that. This research will combine Ovid’s metamorphism with contemporary art, utilizing pictorial software of modern digital technology which composed the latest creation in the field of computer design. This research is to understand how the classic literature has influenced Visual art thousands of years, by linking up Ovid and the present art via the concept of deforming. It is not only the talk between Ovid and Surrealism, the ancient and the modern, but also the word and the art.
