Abstract:
The writers of the Tracts for the Times employed two visions of the Christian past that proved integral to their polemics. The successionist metanarrative of the Christian past linked the absolute and changeless nature of Christian truth claims with the apostolic succession of bishops. The supersessionist metanarrative posited a normative primitive Christianity that had been lost, and that Tractarians sought to restore. A third vision emerged in the private correspondence of several Tractarians. In this private correspondence, Samuel Wood articulated a theory of development that Newman rejecte

Baseball did not become gendered as a man’s sport overnight nor did any single group dominate the cultural metanarrative of baseball as it matured from infancy to adolescence during the nineteenth century. Baseball has been used to symbolize “Americanism,” middle-class, Judeo-Christian values, and “manliness.” Though many vied to control the narrative of America’s national pastime, not every group had equal influence on the ultimate character and culture of baseball. By the end of the nineteenth century, men held almost exclusive control of the narrative of “official” baseball, while women con

Abstract:
This chapter outlines the radical Anglican contribution to the ‘secularization’ metanarrative, which suddenly achieved cultural dominance in British discussion in the early 1960s. During the early Cold War, it had been widely assumed that ‘religious decline’ was a regressive phenomenon, fatally detrimental to human freedom, as apparently exemplified by the Soviet Union. From the late 1950s, however, Anglican radicals drew on Christian eschatology to propagate a radically alternative vision, which interpreted recent declines in ‘religion’ as evidence of humanity’s permanent transition into an u

Abstract:
This chapter explores the radical Anglican contribution to the sudden upsurge of political radicalism which Britain experienced in the late 1960s. As the Sixties progressed, increasing numbers of Anglican radicals were drawn to revolutionary politics by their readings of Christian eschatology, a phenomenon which split the movement between revolutionaries and moderates. Since the secularization metanarrative was becoming increasingly normalized, and since politics was not one of the churches’ historically recognized areas of special authority, radical Christianities played only a contributory r

Abstract:
Scott Brazil examines the frequent practice of applying Old Testament YHWH-texts to Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels. He argues that this YHWH-text phenomenon evidences a high Christology in the primitive church that traces back to Jesus himself. He thus finds in this Synoptic practice a stinging contradiction against the modern critical theory that a high Christology took many decades to develop in the early church and exists only in John among the canonical Gospels. Brazil surveys the Synoptic Gospels in canonical order, exegeting dozens of passages in which OT texts originally referring to YHW

This chapter takes its starting point from the African experience, across a range of African contexts, of Africa as both the subject and object of biblical narrative. When the Bible came to Africa, it came with well-established colonial metanarratives, constructed in part from biblical narratives. These colonial metanarratives were in turn partly reconstructed by the engagement with African others, from both a European and an African perspective along two diverging trajectories, with biblical narrative making a contribution to both. This chapter focuses on the capacity of biblical narrative, b

Abstract:
The Bible has been tremendously influential in American politics by informing grand political theories and by justifying specific policy positions. This chapter analyzes the Bible’s role in political metanarratives and its use in policy positions. From the Puritans’ invocation of Exodus and the City on a Hill through Cold War evangelicals’ interpretations of Revelation, political metanarratives have been animated by divergent and contentious readings of the Bible. Christian uses of the Bible to inform policy stances on slavery, economics, and sexuality have been similarly diverse and contested
