Abstract:
Given that connotative components cause the appearance of new lexical-semantic variants in the token's semantic field and create opportunities for metaphorical, metonymic, ironic nomination, it is essential to analyze the phenomenon of conotema, which is present in phraseological and paremiological units of language, slang, and occasionalisms. The work aims to study the phenomenon of connotation in a comparative aspect, through the prism of English and Ukrainian languages, as well as to identify key issues of modern research of this phenomenon. The object of research is the connotation in the comparative aspect. The following methods were used during the research: analysis and synthesis, observation, method of definitive analysis, method of linguistic description of linguistic facts, comparative method. As a result of the research, the phenomenon of connotation in the comparative aspect is analyzed, based on the materials of the Ukrainian and English languages, and also the problematic aspects of the interlanguage comparison are singled out. It was also noted that it is crucial to promote a more in-depth study of connotations in psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnopsychology, linguoculturology, as this approach provides an opportunity to improve the methodology of research of connotations in the lexicological field.

Abstract:
AbstractMetaphors are considered as instruments crucial for persuasion. However, while many studies and works have focused on their emotive, communicative, and persuasive effects, the argumentative dimension that represents the core of their “persuasiveness” is almost neglected. This paper addresses the problem of explaining how metaphors can communicate arguments, and how it is possible to reconstruct and justify them. To this purpose, a distinction is drawn between the arguments that are communicated metaphorically and interpreted based on relevance considerations, and the ones that are triggered implicitly by the use of a metaphorical expression. In both cases, metaphorical arguments are reconstructed through different patterns of argument, called argumentation schemes (Walton, Reed and Macagno 2008). However, while the purpose of a metaphorical sequence of discourse (called metaphorical move) can guide and justify the reconstruction of the argument that can sufficiently support the intended conclusion in a persuasive move, a more complex analysis is needed for analyzing the additional inferences that a metaphorical move can trigger. These inferences are claimed to represent part of the connotation of the metaphorical expression and can be captured through its most frequent collocations, determinable using some tools of the corpus linguistics.

Abstract:
The subject of the paper is the gender marked conceptual metaphor WOMAN IS A BIRDin two closely related languages − Bulgarian and Croatian languages. The corpus of analyzed ornithonyms, which are metaphorically used for a female referent, was collected from general monolingual and phraseological dictionaries, as well as online and slang dictionaries. Some meanings were illustrated by examples from the online corpora hrWac and Bulgarian web 2012 through the use of the Sketch engine tool. Even though domestic and wild birds are evenly represented in the analyzed corpus, the domestic birds are semantically and metaphorically more productive. The contrastive analysis established that the majority of metaphors are based on anthropomorphism, and that pejorative terms, which serve to semantically derogate women, dominate over terms with positive connotations. We have found pejorative connotations and hints of sexism even in the case of terms of endearment, which are supposed to express a special intimacy and congeniality. Interlingual differences, in the sense of the existence of more specific meanings, are realized within the framework of age and sexual connotation. The interlingual and intralingual variations (Kövecses, 2005, 2015) are the result of the dependency of metaphorical meaning on context and participants in the communication process.

While the modern linguistic studies emphasizes the importance of an understanding of the collocation in order to achieve non-violation of the rules of language use by the community, the translation studies concern with the roles of collocation in ensuring a precise translation. Collocation is regarded as one of the crucial parts in translating metaphorical connotations as it captures the meaning that transcends its literal translation and it cannot be quoted literally otherwise it will spoil the intended meaning. This study aims to highlight the importance of collocation in achieving an exact translation especially in translating the Arabic metaphorical connotations into the Malay language based on semantic equivalence between the source and target text to the closest possible to the meaning of the original Arabic text. This study employs descriptive and analytical methods. Based on the examples, the study concludes the need of taking into account the role of collocation in the translation of the Arabic metaphorical connotation to the Malay language in order to achieve the precise translation as well as to determine the semantic equivalence. Therefore, this research suggests that the translator should choose the correct combination of words in the target language so that he does not come out with a correlation that is incompatible with the nature of the target language.

Abstract:
While the interpretation of the Quran emphasizes the importance of understanding the causes, issues, and incidents about revelation and knowing its time and place, translation studies are concerned with the roles of context in ensuring a precise translation. Context is regarded as one of the crucial parts in translating metaphorical connotations as it captures the meaning that transcends its literal translation. This study highlights the importance of context in achieving an exact translation, especially in translating the Quranic metaphorical connotations into the Malay language based on the semantic equivalence between the source and target text to the closest possible to the meaning of the original Arabic text. This is achieved by analyzing the descriptive, analytical, and comparative methods of selected copies of translations by Mahmoud Younis, Abdullah Basmeih, and Zaini Dahalan. The findings show that these translators pay special attention to the importance of context in the translation of the Quranic metaphorical connotations. Evidence also shows some flaws in the delivery of the intended meaning in the target language when these translations rely solely on the texts’ literal translation, consequently causing a diversion from the intended meaning of the Quranic message. Therefore, this study suggests that it is not reliable for an analysis of the Quran nor for the reader of the target language to depend on one absolute translation only but to refer to and compare different copies of the translation to reach the precise connotation.

The aim of the proposed article is to establish the features of metaphorical modeling of the image of a magician in the news media space of 2020-2024. The key theoretical propositions related to the peculiarities of metaphor research in the current media field are systematized, analyzed and interpreted, a corpus of contexts (more than 100 linguistic facts) is established and characterized, including fragments of a news nature media messages with an integral component wizard. Based on lexicographic sources, the denotative characteristics of the key unit wizard are identified, which formed the basis for fixing this image in the Russian language consciousness, taking into account the various stages of development of this word. It is proved that modern sociopolitical realities determine the expansion of the meaning of the lexeme studied in the article and the appearance of new connotative features in it. Based on the material of the media texts of 2020-2024, it is argued that when reflecting current events related to the sphere of politics, economics, culture, sports, interpersonal relations, contexts that are built on the basis of the integral component wizard tend to reflect both positively labeled and negative actions, events and situations, which leads to the appearance of a dual connotation When implementing a at the secondary nomination level the wizard is in the actual media space. The key research methods were descriptive and interpretative methods, the continuous sampling method, component analysis, as well as elements of quantitative analysis and the modeling method, which allowed us to establish both the most frequent and single metaphorical images with the integral component wizard, implemented in media texts of 2020-2024. The complexity and multicomponence of the metaphorical image of the magician proved in the study, as well as the presence of implicit semantic components, valuable and significant in the context of modern sociopolitical and cultural realities, determine the important place of the metaphorical image of the magician in the modern media field and the wide potential for the emergence of new shades of meaning of the word under study and the variability of its connotations.

The article analyzes the semantics of English phraseological units with food names as a means of transmitting knowledge about human appearance and also reveals their conflictogenic potential. The relevance of this study is determined by the increasing need to discover how conflict-free verbal interaction can be realized, and what risks such communication involves when using phraseological units. The aim of the study is to establish aspects of the information about human appearance represented by phraseological units and to discover the degree of success of communication involving their use, i.e., the degree of conflictogenicity of these units in the context. The main research methods are conceptual and definitional analysis and the method of cognitive modeling. The conducted research made it possible to identify metaphorical, metonymic, metaphthonymic cognitive models and cognitive models of comparison, used to create the analyzed phraseological units, to identify the characteristics on the basis of which the comparison and metonymic, metaphorical or metaphthonymic transfers are carried out. Having considered phraseological units functioning in different contexts, we came to the conclusion that phraseological units with a negative connotation can neutralize it in certain contexts without revealing their conflictogenic potential, while phraseological units with a positive connotation are able to become potentially conflict units in certain contexts.

The concept of essence develops as a prominent creative trend through the theme of emptiness seen in minimalism in architecture. To highlight a few experiences of the emptiness created by the function of space, this topic is examined in the juxtaposition of two cultures: Western as temporal and Eastern as spatial. This article focuses on the metaphorical connotations of space, on Lotman’s semiosphere, which is a space with the included area serving as a symbol of the included space. Lotman describes the semiosphere, based on dualisms, levels, and spatial opposites that represent the Tartu semiotician’s thesis. This case study examines the research’s initial hypothesis of emptiness being a metaphor that appears in the semantics of connotation – in connection between Eastern and Western culture ‒ and provides a spatial model for cultural interpretation.

The word "([chi] eat)" has been widely used in Chinese and it has thus derived rich connotations and complex metaphors. Taking "([chi] eat)" and its related phrases as the research object, this paper classifies its metaphorical types into six categories based on its eight senses recorded in the dictionary. For each type of metaphor, the derivation from the original meaning to the extended meaning is explained and the connotation is stated and further described with detailed examples. Because the formation of language is inseparable from the influence of culture, this paper also analyzes the cultural psychological factors behind the metaphors of "([chi] eat)" from the perspectives of its importance, delicacy, and richness. Closely combined with Chinese history and geographical conditions, a unique explanation for its wide use and great importance is thus provided.

The paper focuses on the identification and description of text-building and meaning-forming (world-modelling, conceptual) metaphorical fields in V. Kaverin’s novel "The Two Captains". The metaphorical field is viewed as a hierarchical structure. The core zone is comprised of the conceptual metaphor "life/world – creativity"; the centre zone includes metaphors extending the core metaphor, in the first place, the metaphors "book of life/life – book" and "world – theatre" (read life, a page of life, the main character and others). The linguistic units which are used simultaneously in their literal and figurative meanings (history) constitute the periphery zone. The world-modelling metaphor forms a system of "figurative parallels" in the novel. Due to this, the form of a trope can vary though its stable semantic significance remains unchanged. "Figurative" parallels include cover not only tropes, but also words in their literal meaning. Owing to continuous repetitions and associative connections with metaphorical contexts, such words support and expand the sphere of influence of extended metaphors. Life as such is perceived in the novel as creative work harmonizing reality due to the expansion of the metaphor scope with the help of intertextual inclusions (The world is a theatre, people are actors and others) and as a result of the reconceptualization of the metaphors theatre, game. They change their negative connotation ("acting") to positive ("creativity"). The metaphors (book of life –) theatre and (book of life –) fairytale receive the additional meaningful connotations "realisation of a dream, fulfilment of passionate desires". Although the subject and image of the metaphors included in the metaphorical field differ, the seme ‘creativity’ enters the comparison feature of each of them.

The diversity of temporal needs in the world has increased the people's rate of communication and interaction. Many factors play a role in increasing the rate of communication and interaction. One of these factors is mobile devices. It can be said that various mobile devices have features that affect human life in many dimensions in today's world. Therefore, these devices have a very important place for individual and social sustainability. Mobile phones are the most important of the various mobile devices in the globalizing world. The excessive use of mobile phones has produced the concept of nomophobia, which is a new type of addiction in the world. In this study, based on this type of disorder, it was aimed to determine the metaphorical connotations of preservice teachers regarding the concept of nomophobia. In this study, which was carried out with a qualitative research method and a phenomenological design, the study group members were asked an open-ended question in the form of "Nomophobia is like ……….…… because …………… ." and by which, the metaphorical connotations of the preservice teachers were aimed to be determined. The analysis of their answers revealed that the preservice teachers had remarkable metaphorical connotations regarding the concept of nomophobia. The connotations compiled in the study were combined under certain themes by the researchers and presented in the findings section.

Abstract:
The article features an analysis of semantics, pragmatics and text-based functioning of figurative vocabulary and expressions, which are metaphorically motivated by such verbs as bite, gnaw, nibble and chew. These verbs name various activities, processes and phenomena because of their analogy to food consumption with the aid of teeth. The analysis allowed the author to describe a number of cognitive metaphorical models which, in their turn, reflect the image projection from the source-domain “Food Consumption” into the conceptual spheres of physiological, mental, psychological and social phenomena. The given system of images expresses metaphorically the concept of various processes and notions related to deformation, destruction and disappearance of material objects; destructive effects on the human body and psyche; social and moral pressure (e. g. competitive struggle, repressive political system), loss of physical resources and values. The pragmatic potential of the image-bearing vocabulary and expressions is predominantly related to negative evaluative connotation since they reveal disapproving, condemning, contemptuous emotional attitude and high level of expressivity.

This paper tried to investigate the presence of the terms of colors and its connotationin the metaphors of Minangkabau Language. To do so, the data were collectedfrom the native speakers and from the books such as Minangkabau Language Dictionary,The Minangkabau Language of Proverb, text of randai, and the lyrics ofMinangkabau songs. The metaphorical color expressions were analysed by correlatingthem with their literal meanings and other factors such as physical, psychological,historical, and cultural. The findings of this research showed that there weresix colors found in metaphorical expression, i.e itam ’black’, putiah ‘white, kulabu’grey’, sirah ’red’, kunyiang ’yellow’, and ijau ’green’. Some colors such as black,white, red, and yellow, contained both negative and positive connotation. However,the other colors such as grey and green only contained negative connotation. Thesemethaporical color expressions were unique because they were mostly influenced bymany factors in Minangkabau language and culture.AbstrakMakalah ini mencoba meneliti keberadaan warna-warna dan makna yang dikandungdalam ekpresi metafora bahasa Minangkabau. Data diperoleh dari penutur aslidan beberapa buku di perpustakaan, seperti Kamus Bahasa Minangkabau, KamusUngkapan Bahasa Minangkabau, teks randai, dan lirik lagu. Konotasi ekpresimetafora warna tersebut dianalisis dengan cara menghubungkannya dengan maknaliteralnya. Selain itu, analisis juga dikaitkan dengan faktor-faktor lain, seperti keadaanfisik, psikologi, sejarah, dan budaya yang mempengaruhinya. Hasil penelitianmenunjukkan bahwa ada enam warna yang ditemukan dalam ekspresi metaforabahasa Minangkabau, yaitu itam ‘hitam, putiah ‘putih’, kulabu ‘abu-abu’, sirah‘merah’, kunyiang ‘kuning’, dan ijau ‘hijau’. Ekspresi metafora yang menggunakanwarna hitam, putih, merah, dan kuning memiliki konotasi positif dan negatif.Akan tetapi, ekpresi metafora yang menggunakan warna abu-abu dan hijau hanyamemiliki konotasi negatif. Setiap ekpresi metafora yang menggunakan kata warnadalam bahasa Minangkabau memiliki keunikan. Keunikan metafora warna tersebutsangat dipengaruhi oleh berbagai faktor dalam bahasa dan budaya Minangkabau.

The article is devoted to the semantic and pragmatic features of the textual implementation of the metaphorical model "Russia is an ark" in the current media space. It is argued that the metaphorical model "Russia is an ark" is based on the biblical "Noah's Ark", which acquires a new connotation in the media field and expands its transformational potential. Based on the material of the Russian-language telegram channels of 2022-2024, it is proved that this Bibleism underlies the metaphorical modelling of the image of Russia as a bearer of traditional values, a guarantor of tranquillity, stability and justice. The purpose of the study is to identify ethnospecific patterns of cultural connotation formation based on zoomorphic metaphorical reinterpretation of lexical components of Russian and Chinese phraseological units. The article considers the representation of the metaphorical understanding of zoonyms that characterize a person in terms of appearance, character, speech activity, intelligence, interpersonal relationships, emotional state and behavior. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time, through the structural and semantic characteristics of zoophraseological units, their comparative linguistic and cultural commentary is given, including an etymological description, analysis of the internal form, fixation of the structural and semantic model, as well as identification of the stereotypical component. The study revealed that in the Russian and Chinese language worldviews there are a significant number of metaphorical models and ethnospecific stereotypes with a zoo component, which contributes to the successful comparison of linguistic and cultural mechanisms of conceptualization of reality.

The paper aims to examine the metaphorical uses of English adjectives denoting perceptual qualities (taste, temperature and touch) and ways of rendering them in Lithuanian. Based on the data of the Parallel Corpus, the types of translation are identified and discussed in relation to cross-linguistic variation as well as other factors affecting translation. The study is carried out in the framework of cognitive approach to metaphor and its translation: individual metaphorical expressions are linked to conceptual metaphors underlying them, with the focus on the source domain exploited in the source and target languages. From this view, metaphorical rendering of English adjectives in Lithuanian falls into two types: the original metaphor is either retained (if the same perceptual quality is expressed, directly or indirectly) or replaced by another metaphor (if a different source domain is introduced, usually a quality perceived through a different sense or some physical sensation). Other types of translation include cases of non-metaphorical rendering: loss of metaphoricity due to paraphrase (literal expression) and omission of the metaphorical meaning.The findings show that the original metaphor is preserved in around 30% of all cases. Other types of translation are mainly determined by two factors: cross-linguistic asymmetry (a different range of the metaphorical meanings of English adjectives and their equivalents in Lithuanian, differences in connotation, specific lexical and syntactic patterns of the target language) and the subjective choice of the translator (individual preference for a certain expression).

This writing describes pornographic humour conveyed in tatarucingan ‘Sundanese riddles’. I focuses on pornographic connotation and types of pornographic humour existing in tatarucingan. The method used was descriptive one with theoretical analysis by Sukatman (2009) combined with Danandjaja (1984), Rahmanadji (2007), Yuniawan (2007), and Mulia (2014). The result shows that the pornographic connotation in tatarucingan conveyed in the questions or answers of the tatarucingan ‘riddles’. I means that the pornographic connotation may be conveyed in the questionsand may also be in the answers of the riddles. The types of pornographic connotation include rational-answer humour, logic games humour, pseudo-incoherence humour, sound games humour and metaphorical humour. AbstrakPenelitian ini mendeskripsikan humor pornografi yang terdapat dalam tatarucingan ‘teka-teki Sunda’. Masalah yang dikaji meliputi konotasi pornografi dan jenis humor pornografi yang terdapat dalam tatarucingan. This article is devoted to the study of the characteristics of metaphorical language and its translation in the texts of traditional Chinese medicine. The research subject of this article is metaphorical language in TCM texts. The characteristics of the metaphorical language of TCM texts determine that translation should focus on cross-cultural communication and meaning interpretation. The purpose of the study is to investigate, learn how to accurately decipher metaphorical language and convey the connotation of these metaphorical expressions, so as to promote the effective dissemination of TCM culture in intercultural communication. And also - to reduce misunderstandings caused by cultural and linguistic differences, to improve the quality and accuracy of translations of TCM texts, to build a better linguistic bridge for TCM to the world. In terms of research methodology, this paper uses the method of literature study - extensive collection of relevant information and detailed interpretation of typical metaphorical expressions, as well as the method of comparative analysis - comparing the differences in the use of metaphorical language in different literatures. Scientific novelty is reflected in the in-depth interpretation and translation of TCM metaphors. Through an in-depth study of TCM theories and practices, the scientific principles underlying metaphors are revealed and presented to readers in a clearer and more accurate way. At the same time, innovative translation methods such as the method of literal translation with commentary, the free translation method, etc., allow readers to better understand the unique meaning of TCM metaphors. Through in-depth analysis, it is found that metaphorical language has important characteristics such as imagery, cultural relevance and polysemy, and is an important cognitive approach and tool in Chinese medicine and at the same time not only embodies a special description of physiological phenomena, but also a unique cognitive marker of alternative psychophysiological communication.

The article presents a metaphorical interpretation of the archetypal concept of DNESS as a component of the opposition "light - darkness" in the artistic discourse of Terry Pratchett. In the classical view, a metaphor is motivated by the similarity of two objects belonging to different classes. However, metaphorical transfer is not always motivated by a system of generally accepted associations. Similarity, being a subjective category, it is not constant and can be subject to gradation. The conducted analysis allowed us to assert that the strongest connection between the compared objects is observed in the so-called archetypal metaphors, andthe least - in the original author's metaphors and diaphors, which make sense only in a certain situational context. In the artistic discourse of T. Pratchett, the basis for metaphorical transfer is unconventional associative connections embodied by the author in unhackneyed metaphors and diaphors. The author endows this concept with anthropomorphic features and positive characteristics and thereby changes the connotation from negative to neutral and positive, which does not correspond to the concept of the DNESS archetype.

Statement of the problem. This article analyzes the anthropomorphic image of a mechanism and the mechanistic image of a person in the aspect of evaluative semantics, reveals the axiological orientation of conceptual models, and presents the characteristics of the reversible correlation of the analyzed concepts in terms of their evaluative orientation. The purpose of the article is to analyze the metaphorical models “MAN – MECHANISM” and “MECHANISM – MAN” in terms of evaluative semantics, to identify the nature and axiological potential of conceptual metaphorical models. The study was carried out on the methodological basis of cognitive linguistics and was carried out on the material of the texts of the National Corpus of the Russian Language, Internet forums representing the semantics of the mechanism both as a target sphere and as a source sphere for the metaphorical interpretation of the image of a person. Research results confirm the functional-semantic asymmetry of metaphorical models, which appears in different evaluative orientations of the metaphors of the compared models. Thus, most of the lexical representatives of the “MAN is a MECHANISM” model is characterized by a negative evaluative connotation: a person in the image of a mechanism is characterized negatively or ironically. While the evaluative semantics of the metaphors of the correlated MM “MECHANISM is a MAN” is characterized by neutrality.

In this paper, on the basis of the method of conceptual analysis, metaphorical models of journalistic discourse and the journalistic picture of the world of citizens of Kazakhstan, which they form, are presented, including their ideas about various spheres of life: political, economic, cultural, social, etc. Metaphorical models with the conceptual spheres «Man», «Society», «Nature», «Artifacts». The selection of material was made on the basis of the publication - the newspaper «Arguments and Facts. Kazakhstan» for 2023. The conceptual analysis of metaphors made it possible to state that the most highly productive is the conceptual sphere «Man», which contains the largest number of anthropomorphic metaphors. The conceptual sphere «Nature» can also be considered quite productive, in which phytomorphic metaphors, metaphors of liquid, air, fiery and light are recorded. Unproductive, but important for the characterization of journalistic discourse are metaphorical models with the conceptual spheres «Artifacts» and «Society» with criminal and military metaphors. The authors came to the conclusion that the frequency of using metaphors in texts of various subjects is not uniform: the most productive metaphorical models used in texts are rubrics about culture 43%, followed by rubrics about politics 39% and society 12%. The vocabulary that forms metaphors in the vast majority of contexts carries a positive connotation, thereby forming a positive journalistic picture of the world among readers.

The article is devoted to the consideration of the metaphorical use of precedent names from the source spheres “literature” and “cinema” in the political discourse of modern Spanish-language mass media. The names of heroes of ancient mythology, works of classical Spanish and foreign literature, including children’s literature, as well as movie characters, carriers of certain qualities and properties, are widely used as precedents. As a result of the study, the grounds for metaphorical transfer from the named source spheres to the target sphere are established. The function of precedent names is also revealed not only as actualizers of the precedent situation, but also as a means of characterization of political opponents in the sphere of political discourse in the context of the struggle of political forces for the possession, preservation and disposal of power. The modern political discourse of the Spanish-language media as an arena of political confrontation is characterized by intolerance, agonality, the “language of hostility” marking opponents as “alien” in the “friend”– “alien” binary opposition with the predominance of discrediting characterization of political opponents aimed at debunking claims to leadership of a politician, demonstrating his incompetence and hanging labels. In the context of the language game, precedent names are used as a metaphorical definition of the names of current politicians. For characterization, precedent names are taken with both negative and positive connotations, but imparting a negative connotation to the object of characterization due to the emerging phenomenon of enantiosemia when using them as a metaphorical definition of proper names. Thanks to the atmosphere of the language game created in journalistic texts by means of well-known precedent names from works of mass culture, through the game connection of the name of a politician with the precedent name of a characteristic hero, such texts acquire the property of information and entertainment journalism, they implement the pragmatic function of precedent names aimed at manipulating the addressee, at encouraging him to act for the purposes of one political actor or another, and a sign of political technologies is revealed with full evidence of the author’s intentions.

The article examines the linguistic peculiarities of the masquerade image in news media texts of 2020-2024. The research is aimed at systematizing scientific research devoted to the theoretical analysis of news texts formation through the use of imaginative means. The main research methods used in this article are descriptive and interpretative, continuous sampling method, component analysis, as well as elements of quantitative analysis and modeling method, which allow to identify the connotative characteristics of the metaphor under study and its syntagmatic potential. The research material (more than 100 contexts) source was the electronic media of a sociopolitical topic published between 2020 and 2024 objectifying the image of the masquerade. As a result of the study, it was found that masquerade is actively implemented at the level of secondary nomination in contexts that destructively evaluate certain sociopolitical realities and form a sharply negative attitude towards them among the mass reader. The results of the analysis allow us to conclude about the fixed connotative potential of the masquerade image, which is relevant for sociopolitical texts..The implementation features of the studied image established in the article allow us to confirm the wide manipulative potential and the fixed negative connotation of the contexts formed in this way, which are not homogeneous in their structure and meaning and are represented by thematic groups: political actions and processes as a masquerade, the activities of political subjects as a masquerade, masquerade attributes as elements of a political structure. It is noted that masquerade as a metaphorical model is a system whose elements are in relation to each other in a position of adjacency or subordination, but may vary depending on the specific content of the context in which it is used. The initial features of the masquerade image – pretense, theatricality, disguise - find metaphorical implementation in news media texts using the examples of the studied contexts.

The article is devoted to the concept definition of negative manipulative communicative demonstrativeness and the identification its implementation means in speech. In the course of the work, the interdisciplinary approach and the method of psycholinguistic analysis of the communicants’ speech output were used. The material for the analysis was the characters’ statements from Russian literature of the XIX century. It is established that the negative manipulative communicative demonstrativeness is a tonality of communication characterized by exaggerated negative self-presentation in the process of self-explanation, accentuation of the dominant destructive emotion, implemented to benefit from the recipient expressed by means of semiotic polymodality. The study shows that the negative manipulative communicative demonstrativeness performs attractive, expressive, influencing, entertaining, pragmatic and conative functions, implements communicative strategies of self-pity, outrage, foolishness, buffoonery, self-abasement and self-flagellation. Linguistic means of expressing this tonality are revealed: metaphorical litota, synecdoche with negative connotation, increasing negative gradation, intensifying particles-phraseological units of religious content, negative adjectives in a diminutive form, emotive interjections with the component «God», prayerful ritual utterances, rhetorical questions, antithesis (self-pity); paradox with negative connotative meaning, enhanced antithesis (shocking); negative hyperbolic tropes, reiteration, exclamation sentences (foolishness); hyperbolic comparison (buffoonery); negative epithets and prosodic units, including a quiet voice, speech with pressure, an elevated tone and frequent pausing (self-abasement); negative nouns, imperative sentences and cliched phrases with negative connotation (self-flagellation). The paralinguistic means of actualizing this tonality are indicated: phonational and kinetic demonstratives. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the unexplored nature of the phenomenon under consideration.

Secondary lexical nomination is characterized by the use of nominative means that already exist in the language in a new function of naming. Vocatives of this type are created under certain circumstances and have an emotional or evaluative connotation that is expressed indirectly. Metaphorical and metonymic rethinking of words and their combinations leads to the emergence of indirect nominations that require additional context for their understanding and interpretation. Thus, the analysis of indirect nominations is an important tool for understanding linguistic constructions and their meanings. Occasional names and nicknames in the function of address should be referred to such nominations.

The study aimed to determine the perceptions of preservice social studies teachers about communication; metaphors were employed to determine communication skill perceptions. In the study, a qualitative research method known as phenomenology design was employed. The study group included 127 preservice social studies teachers in various classes. In the study, metaphoric perceptions form was used to collect the data. The collected data were analysed with content analysis. The study findings demonstrated that preservice social studies teachers produced 36 valid metaphors in 7 different conceptual categories (a requirement, a nonverbal code system, a mutual process, a positive connotation, a unifying element, a dynamic phenomenon, communication as a method to reflect ideas). The total metaphor count and metaphor frequencies revealed that the highest number of metaphors was produced in the communications as a requirement category. The most repeated metaphor in this category was the requirement of water to sustain life. In this category, concepts such as blood, breathing, and oxygen, which are important for human life, were expressed as metaphors that represented communication skills.

This article argues for a metaphorical connotation for the term ὁ λóγos in the Gospel, beyond its use in the prologue (John 1:1-18): this stands against the consensus of scholarship. It draws on some insights regarding short story openings, to argue that ὁ λóγos and oúτos function as non-sequential sequence signals, and character-substitutes, to pique the reader's curiosity as to the identity of the Logos, and prepare for the introduction of the name “Jesus Christ” in v.17. These narrative dynamics, the structure of the prologue, and the operations of implicature (Grice), create a strong link in the implied reader's mind between the Logos and Jesus. The implied author uses the implicative force of this connection to add metaphorical freight to the term when used later in the Gospel. The article explores six instances where the term ὁ λóγos appears (6:60; 7:36; 8:37; 10:35; 12:48; 17:17) and where, it is argued, the possibility exists of a usage which echoes that of the prologue.

In the Senegalese rap discourse, terms of address such as appellative are generally used to address others or to designate something. This article aims at analyzing the different forms of diabolic appellatives used by rappers when they are addressing the politician or are talking about the political system. The corpus is composed of fifteen songs produced during the last 20 years by rappers well known in the Senegalese hip hop scene. The obtained results indicate that the categories of appellatives most frequently used by the rapper are neological, qualifying, anthroponymic, kinship and metaphorical appellatives. These appellatives have a negative connotation and aim at caricaturing the politician or the political system.

The article continues to comprehensively analyze the reflection of the October Revolution in B. Akunin’s blog Love of History . With the help of the contexts from Google Books, the most important features of homo soveticus are distinguished; the authors show how the Soviet man became disillusioned with the ideals brought up in him from childhood. One of these ideals is interpreted within the metaphorical model “revolution as a woman”. Based on the material of the blog entry “Lover of the Revolution (Age-Written)” (26.09.2013), the general text implementation of this metaphor is shown. It has been suggested that, in addition to direct negative evaluation nominations of the female image and the accompanying mythologization, this model appears at the levels of the categories of composition, theme, chronotope, and tonality. A detailed categorical analysis made it possible to confirm this hypothesis: the revolution, metaphorically displayed as a woman, retains a temporal connotation in the analyzed entry; the main character, who occupies the position of the theme (its “lover”), comes to be in a difficult relationship with the revolutionary epoch and eventually dies, “burned in the flames” of his own passion.

The beauty of a poem depends on the poet’s selection of diction to express his heart’s content. Diction is a careful assortment of the beautiful and concise words to express various matters by the poet’s mixture. The collection of words in poems is based on the relations to its meaning, sound harmony, and word sequences in a specific language manner that are crafted. The selection of diction is heavily correlated to the figurative language; an analogical language that is portrayed by the poet to beautify, heighten a certain effect and give rise to a particular connotation in his poems. Language is the carrier of culture and culture nourishes language. According to statistics, 56% of the commonly used 10,000 English words are adopted from Latin and ancient Greek, which are the carrier languages of Roman civilization and Greek civilization respectively. Greco-Roman mythology, with its rich cultural connotation, permeates all aspects of people's social life in English-speaking countries and becomes a source of vitality for the expansion of English vocabulary. Etymology, the scientific study of the origin of words, is crucial in English vocabulary teaching, as etymological study improves vocabulary learning. This paper adopts the methodology of literature research to gather materials about English vocabulary teaching methods, etymology theory, and Greco-Roman mythological origin of English vocabulary. In order to better explain the cultural connotation of words in English vocabulary teaching, this paper proposes method of applying Greco-Roman mythology learning in English vocabulary teaching, and classifies English vocabulary into four forms according to etymological motivation: direct use, metaphorical use, semantic transfer and derivation from the perspective of Greco-Roman mythological origin, thus stimulating English learners' interest and improving the efficiency of both teaching and learning.

Metaphor widely exists in daily discourse and shines people’s extremely intelligent thinking. With the development of cognitive science, metaphor has become an indispensable cognitive tool. The awards ceremony for fighting against COVID-19 was held in Beijing Great Hall of the people and the speech of general secretary Present Xi at the conference was heartening. The speech contains a large number of metaphorical expressions, carrying the Chinese cultural information that was contained in the process of China’s anti-epidemic. Under the guidance of conceptual metaphor theory and combined with cultural context, interpreting the metaphorical expression in the speech will help to understand the great anti-epidemic spirit of the Chinese nation and the profound connotation of Chinese civilization. Research results showed that war metaphors were widely used in the speech, which carried forward the Chinese people’s brave and aggressive spirit in the process of fighting against COVID-19. The use of travel metaphors showed the confidence of the Chinese people to move forward bravely. The use of examination metaphors reflected the serious attitude and extraordinary wisdom of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government towards the epidemic.

The study employs a comprehensive methodology rooted in Cognitive Semantics Analysis and Qualitative Methods. The main objective of this study is to unravel the intricate web of thought processes, cultural nuances, and linguistic expressions associated with the profound emotion of longing within the context of Indonesian proverbs. To achieve this objective, the study meticulously scrutinizes a diverse corpus of Indonesian proverbs. The study aims to uncover the underlying cognitive patterns and conceptualizations that shape how longing is linguistically and culturally framed by analyzing the linguistic elements, metaphorical expressions, and cultural connotations within these proverbs. The results show that (1) one of the most striking features of Indonesian proverbs is their frequent use of metaphorical expressions to convey the experience of longing, (2) Indonesian proverbs frequently emphasized the communal and relational aspects of longing; longing was often depicted as a force that strengthens bonds between individuals, reflecting the collectivist nature of Indonesian society, and (3) that the emotion of longing is deeply embedded in Indonesian culture and society. This study offers valuable insights into the cultural fabric of Indonesia. Exploring the interplay between cognition, language, and culture in the context of longing sheds light on the intricacies of human emotional experiences and their representation in language. The aim of the article is to analyze the symbolism of clouds in the idiostyle of Sergey Yesenin. The object of the analysis is the “atmospheric phenomena” symbolism within the semantic field of “nature”. The focus of the research is the specificity of the symbolism of clouds in the linguistic image of the poet’s world. The research methods of semantic analysis and linguistic description are used. The material for the analysis is fragments of poetic texts by Sergey Yesenin. An attempt is made to describe the mechanism of creating a symbolic sense, which is also a metaphorical sense and is based on associative, analogous thinking. The factual material illustrates the role of the semantic phenomenon of the contextual connotation of words (lexemes) in a poetic text. The article shows that the symbolism of clouds in Yesenin reflects certain phenomena, e.g., things (beard, lace), atmospheric phenomena (rain), place (cornfield), physical phenomena (chill), animals (horse), perception of the world (unhappiness, illusion, mystery), people (believers). The attention was paid to the exceptional transparency of the phenomenon of things (honey, smoke, threshold, blade, beard, lace, lake, torn clothing (outfit)), which create the so-called functional metaphor. The conducted analysis will contribute to the enrichment of knowledge on the creation of a model of mechanisms controlling symbolic-metaphorical (figurative) thinking, as well as to further studies on the functioning mechanism of associative (metaphorical) thinking. A possibility of comparative analysis of clouds symbolism in the idiostyles of other Russian or European poets is suggested.

The goal of this research was to explain and analyze the metaphor in the lyric of the song Ojo Kumba Futung letang dulionong, which was performed in Dulolong Village, Northwest Alor District, Alor Regency . The author employed qualitative research, which is based on the interpretation of meaning and phenomena or events that occur in society but are difficult to quantify with numbers or other precise measurements. According to the findings of the research, there are numerous types of metaphorical poems in Dulolong village with diverse meanings, some of which have connotations in marriage, others in the lego-lego dance, and even poetry with meanings in brotherhood, which is known as Ojo in the local language. Letang Dulionong Kumba Futung The poem by Ojo Kumba Futung Letang Dulionong has a very positive connotation for the Dulolong community, and it explains the evidence of a close brotherhood. This line was chanted at a gathering of traditional chiefs to work on the Uma Kakang Tribe's traditional dwelling. Poetry plays a vital role in a variety of activities such as traditional parties and weddings, as these poems give art that can help set the tone for these events.

Parables are similitudes taken from everyday life in nature that plastically reproduce a spiritual reality. Parables have many similarities with fables. However, while fables usually depict some abstract, fantastic, unreal truths from the life of nature or animals, most of the time unrealizable, parables do not have an unreal connotation but are possible events taken from everyday life. Although along with allegory, fable and even metaphors, parables are distinguished by their beauty and originality from all the writings of Holy Scripture, they are not identified with any of the variants that come close to the metaphorical literary meaning. Because the parable is an imagined story, which exposes real facts from human life and activity.

The aim of the study was to analyze metaphorical models which objectify the concept of Europe in modern Ukrainian media. The relevance of this study is confirmed by the fact that in the last decade of the 20th century, the idea of “Europe” has taken on characteristics of a media-concept and a mental prototype of the future, which has taken a leading role in Ukrainian media discourse. The source of materials for this study became publications of “Ukrainian Youth”, “The Voice of Ukraine”, “Day”, “Mirror of the Week”, “Veche”, and others, which are presented in electronic corpuses of Ukrainian texts GRAK and MovaInfo (years 2012–2020). The total amount of analyzed lexical units is 101 (50 lexemes from the corpus MovaInfo and 51 lexemes from the corpus GRAK). The concept of Europe is a culturally-generalized, value-heavy entity, a deep, abstract category, which for a long time built its own multidimensional spheres of concepts. At the same time, the concept of Europe is a national, specific fragment of the nation’s worldview. Analysis of metaphorical models, which found their place in Ukrainian mass media, showed that systematic, multidimensional dismantling of the concept of Europe is happening gradually, which is leading to the loss of a stable, geographical definition of the referential space of the lexeme. As a result, this leads to correlating changes in its semantic structure. For the designation of the named concept, the following conceptual metaphors are predominantly used: fort, babushka, mentor, dream, spirit, supermarket, road, and others, predominantly with positive connotation. The inspected material displays that the past decade of the 20th century significantly gave relevance to the concept of Europe, declaring it as an important, modern ideologeme, like a mental prototype of Ukraine’s future. Comprehension of the concept of Europe as a myth is gradually turning into its realization as a major goal.

Vocabulary plays an essential role in foreign language learning, and it is the same with Chinese students’ learning English. However, in China traditional ways of English vocabulary learning focuses on the recitation and analysis of the sound, spelling and meaning of English words without considering their cognitive motivations and thus makes understanding and memorization of them invalid and boring, which directly affects Chinese students’ English level of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Therefore, some effective methods of English vocabulary learning must be found so as to arouse students’ interests and facilitate their learning of English words. Conceptual metaphor theory reveals that metaphor is not only a universal cognitive phenomenon but also a cognitive tool of human beings, which can shed some lights onto English words learning, a kind of cognitive activity. Conceptual metaphor theory also depicts cross-domain mapping as its working mechanism by saying that cross-domain mapping is a kind of thinking link from source domain to target domain. And this thinking link is of great help to the memorizing processes of words and understanding of words’ connotation and can make English vocabulary learning systematic and flexible. This paper explores the application of conceptual metaphor theory into college English vocabulary learning from three aspects, namely, polysemous words, idiomatic expressions and word connections, aiming at cultivating students’ metaphorical awareness and improving their metaphorical competence in vocabulary learning.

Материалом послужили новостные тексты британских интернет-изданий (The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph и британского интернет-портала BBC News), освещающих тему Брексита; методами исследования – дефиниционный анализ, компонентный анализ, метод сплошной выборки, метод интерпретационного и концептуального анализа, метод метафорической концептуализации. Результаты и обсуждение. Проведен анализ и осуществлена интерпретация метафорической репрезентации социально-политического явления Брексита через религиозные концепты. Религия пронизывала историю всех народов, все сферы человеческого бытия, проникая в сознание и подсознание людей. Значимость религии в современном обществе обусловливает интенцию авторов новостей задать необходимые ценностные ориентации для реципиента в имплицитной форме. Выявлена метафорическая субмодель BREXIT – RELIGIOUS BELIEF (БРЕКСИТ – РЕЛИГИОЗНОЕ УБЕЖДЕНИЕ), в терминах которой Брексит интерпретируется как религиозное убеждение, что значительно увеличивает его воздействующий потенциал. Один из результатов исследования – выявление в рамках религиозной модели субмодели BREXIT – CULT (БРЕКСИТ – КУЛЬТ), которая имеет негативную коннотацию, обозначая псевдорелигиозную организацию. Анализируется когнитивная метафорическая модель Брексита, в которой идеология Брексита как священной войны за возвращение национального суверенитета трансформируется в идеологию «зомбированного» тоталитарного культа как стремления к псевдоценностям. Выявлена метафорическая субмодель BREXIT – SECT (БРЕКСИТ – СЕКТА), посредством которой устанавливаются концептуальные связи между политикой Б. Джонсона в отношении Брексита и террористической организацией Аль-Каида, чьи приверженцы готовы умирать сами и убивать других за свою идеологию. Аргументируется реализация интерпретирующего потенциала религиозной концептуальной метафоры в формировании отрицательного образа Брексита в новостном дискурсе. Заключение. В рамках религиозной метафорической модели БРЕКСИТ – РЕЛИГИЯ выявлены субмодели БРЕКСИТ – РЕЛИГИОЗНОЕ УБЕЖДЕНИЕ, БРЕКСИТ – КУЛЬТ, БРЕКСИТ – СЕКТА. Интерпретирующий потенциал религиозной метафоры реализован. Introduction. The socio-political event of the UK’s exit from the European Union has attracted widespread attention in the mass media since 2016. The article focuses on the metaphorical conceptualization of Brexit in news discourse. Material and methods. The research is based on the news texts on Brexit from the British internet-editions such as The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph and BBC News. The research methods used in the paper are the definitional analysis, componential analysis, complete enumeration method, interpretation analysis, content analysis, metaphorical conceptualization method. Results and discussion. The paper gives a detailed analysis and interpretation of Brexit metaphorical representation from a religious perspective. The religion has always played an essential role in the history of human society. It is considered not only to permeate all the spheres of human activity but also consciousness and subconsciousness. Therefore, journalists implicitly try to influence the values of recipients. The metaphorical submodel BREXIT – RELIGIOUS BELIEF revealed in the paper describes Brexit primarily as a religious belief to add more value for the British society. The metaphorical submodel BREXIT – RELIGIOUS BELIEF is transformed into the submodel BREXIT – CULT with a negative connotation as a pseudo-religious organization. The metaphorical submodel BREXIT – SECT considered in the paper has a destructive nature and it compares B. Johnson and his supporters with the terrorist group Al-Qaeda that is ready to murder and die for its ideology. Conclusion. Productive religious metaphorical submodels interpret Brexit as a negative process. The interpretive potential of conceptual religious metaphor is realized.
