Chua, David. "Metaphysical accounts of modality: A comparative evaluation of Lewisian and neo-Aristotelian modal metaphysics." Thesis, Department of Philosophy, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/9001.

Full text
Abstract:
In this essay I comparatively evaluate two realist metaphysical accounts of modality: David Lewis’ (1986) genuine modal realism (GMR), and neo-Aristotelian modal realism (AMR) as put forth by Alexander Pruss (2011). GMR offers a reductive analysis of modal claims of possibility and necessity in terms of claims quantifying over concrete worlds and counterparts, and is in this way committed the existence of a plurality of concrete worlds other than the actual world; AMR, on the other hand, offers an analysis of modal claims in terms of claims about the causal powers of existing objects in the a

Abstract:
This thesis argues that narratives about Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) act as the central point of contact between conspiracist and popular millennial fields. Their confluence has come to form a field here termed ‘metaphysical conspiracism’, combining teleological narratives, the promise of soteriological knowledge and the threat of occluded malevolent agencies. I argue that metaphysical conspiracism offers a unique perspective on the interplay of knowledge, power and the construction of the other in contemporary popular discourse. Thesis advisor: Jean-Luc Solère
Thesis advisor: Marius Stan
My dissertation focuses on the problem of matter's divisibility in the 17th-18th centuries. The problem of material divisibility is a focal point at which the metaphysical principle of simplicity and the mathematical principle of space's infinite divisibility conflict. The principle of simplicity is the metaphysical requirement that there must be a simple or indivisible being that is the constitutive foundation of all composite things in nature. Without simple beings, there cannot be composite beings. The mathematical principle

Abstract:
In the first half of the thesis I investigate David Hilbert's early ontology of mathematics around the period 1899-1916. Hilbert's early views are of significant philosophical interest and have been largely ignored due to his later, more influential work. I suggest that, in this period Hilbert, can be understood as an early structuralist. In the second half of the thesis, I connect two important debates in the foundations of mathematics: Hale and Wright's neo-Fregean logicism and the Frege-Hilbert controversy. Using this connection, I adapt Frege's objections to Hilbert and apply them to Hale

This research has been inspired by the development of a central aspect in the work of Henri Bergson, namely the relationship of his philosophical thought with the sciences. This study intends to analyze the foundational features and the main nodal points of said relationship, in order to examine its effect on Bergson’s conception of philosophy. Two separate but connected dimensions have been considered concerning the link between Bergson’s philosophy and scientific knowledge. Augustine, the fourth-century Christian philosopher, is perhaps best-known for his spiritual autobiography Confessions. Two aspects of the problem of evil are arguably critical for comprehending his life in Books 1 through 9 of the work. His search for the nature and origin of evil in the various philosophies that he encounters (the intellectual aspect) and his struggles with his own weaknesses (the experiential aspect) are windows for understanding the actual dynamics of his sojourn. This thesis seeks to realign Richard Crashaw’s aesthetic orientation with a broadly conceptualized genre of seventeenth-century devotional, or meditative, poetry. This realignment clarifies Crashaw’s worth as a poet within the Renaissance canon and helps to dismantle historicist and New Historicist readings that characterize him as a literary anomaly. The methodology consists of an expanded definition of meditative poetry, based primarily on Louis Martz’s original interpretation, followed by a series of close readings executed to show continuity between Crashaw and his contemporaries, not disc

We assume that Nietzsche conceals his true sources in the Birth of Tragedy from the reader. However, in this work, based on numerous clues from the primary text, we show that both the Dionysian and the Apollonian principle derives from the German Romantic tradition of the first half of the 19th century.
