This thesis examines the idea that when a physical theory contains symmetries, the theory should be interpreted in such a way that symmetry-related models represent the same physical state of affairs. It argues that we can best do so by drawing on analogies to ideas in philosophy of logic and language: specifically, by thinking of symmetries as a means of translating a theory into itself. It consists of six chapters, together with an introduction and conclusion. In Chapter 1, I set up the main ideas needed to more precisely frame the question at hand: namely, the notions of symmetry, interpret

I shall argue that whilst it is problematic for the Presentist to dispute the claim that their theory is incompatible with The Special Theory of Relativity, they can successfully refute the argument that their theory is therefore incompatible with our most fundamental theories of physics. The first part works through the argument for the existence of movement in the Physics. The book starts from the physics of overtone singing, and introduces the practice of overtone singing in the East and West, and then explores the spiritual realm in overtone singing; finally, the author winds up his book with the concept of the fifth element. Knowledge Tongeren draws on in this book ranges widely over music, acoustics, cognition, physics, psychology, metaphysics and so on. Tongeren’

English, Afrikaans and Zulu summaries<br>While there is increasing interest in the effect of landscape on ancient imagination, less attention has been paid to the impact of restless karst hydrology on ancient beliefs. By identifying shared themes, this study compares and contrasts the way Hittites and Aegean people in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages reshaped peripheral karst landscapes into physical and imagined transitional zones. Karst geology underpins much of the Aegean and Anatolian landscape, allowing subterranean zones to be visible and accessible above ground via caves, sprin

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the impact of the problem of causality on Kant’s moral philosophy, more specifically the influence of Hume on Kant's view of free will. As is well known, Kant considers that Hume was responsible for awaking him from his “dogmatic slumber” (Prolegomena, A 13). In An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding, Hume seeks to examine the cognitive structure of human mind, stressing the existence of two fundamental kinds of knowledge: “matters of fact” and “relations of ideas”. While the latter consist of necessary truths, “matters of fact” correspond to contingent truths. Th

Abstract:
The mind-body problem is the problem: what is the relationship between mind and body? In this project, I claim that the relationship between the experience of pain and specific physiological mechanisms is best understood as one of type identity. Specifically, the personal experience of pain is an allostatic stress mechanism comprised of interdependent nervous, endocrine and immune operations. In Chapter One, I provide five reasons to prefer type identity theory of mind to dualistic philosophies of mind: it has greater explanatory power; it is more respectful of philosophical and folk intuitio
