Abstract In John Dewey’s logical theory, qualities or qualitative relations account for the capacity to distinguish and associate the objects of reflective thought; they are antecedent to reflective analysis and necessary for coherent processes of inquiry. In Dewey’s writings that are specifically “metaphysical” in orientation, he is much more vague about the function of qualities, but does call them “generic traits of existence.” As such, they appear to be central to his mature ontological theory. Specifically, it examines the Peripatetic tradition and Alexander of Aphrodisias to then turn to the commentaries of the late Neoplatonist Asclepius of Tralles, and the Byzantine commentator Michael of Ephesus. It argues that Alexander is the pioneer of the interpretation of artefactual forms as qualities and artefacts as accidental beings. Abstract:
This article provides a summary of the Dalrymple Lectures delivered November 18–21, 2019. It examines the troubled, and troubling, idea of ‘civilization’, charting a path toward rehabilitation not as a descriptive category but as an analytic concept. Returning to the term's 18th century origins, civilization here describes neither a state of being nor a set of personal qualities but an apparatus, a machine that generates recognition by setting the material terms for who is like and who is Other. It does so through the generation of at least three forms of value – metaphysical, epistemic, and e

Abstract Are colors features of objects “out there in the world” or are they features of our inner experience and only “in our head?” Color perception has been the focus of extensive philosophical and scientific debate. In this paper we discuss the limitations of the view that Chalmers’ (2006) has characterized as Primitivism, and we develop Marmodoro’s (2006) Constitutionalism further, to provide a metaphysical account of color perception in terms of causal powers. The result is Power-based Constitutionalism, the view that colors are (multi-track and multi-stage) powers of objects, whose (ful

The novel is set in the period of inter-ethnic conflict which arose after the American invasion of 2003. Hādī, the main character of the novel, ‘creates a monster’ namely Syismah from the corpses of the many bomb victims in Baghdad. The writer combines setting of the novel with belief of the Iraq people, horoscope practice, and magic, in mystical and illogical atmosphere. The picture of the world that Leibniz proposes in his doctrine is undeniably remarkable. The created world we inhabit is, according to Leibniz, the best all possible worlds. According to Leibniz, such a noble task as the creation of the world could only have fallen to the supreme Being. In this article, we aim to describe the subtle processes a choreographer initiates to achieve the intended aesthetic and ethical results. The author reproduces the internal network of complex relationships connecting the theme of dark with related motives and qualities. The darkness itself is understood here as a figureof the imagination, which with particular force reveals the existential dimension of Różewicz's poetry, but is also a trace of metaphysical recognition and is closely associated with the "secret", represented in the poet's works as "dark" reality, internally "disturbed", "

We also prove that Claude’s inability to reconcile his artistic creation and his sexual love can be explained by the profound incompatibility between aesthetic contemplation – during which an artist shrinks away from the Will – and sexual desire, the latter being one of the ways the metaphysical Will manifests itself in a man.
