Abstract:
Background: Metastases to the pancreas are rare, accounting for less then 2 % of all pancreatic malignancies. However, both the benefit of extended tumor resection and the ideal oncological approach have not been established for such cases; therefore, we evaluated patients with metastasis to the pancreas who underwent pancreatic resection. Methods: Between 1994 and 2012, 676 patients underwent pancreatic surgery in our institution. We retrospectively reviewed patients’ medical records according to survival, and surgical and non-surgical complications. Student’s t-test and the log-rank test wer

The lack of suitable models for prediction of the vertebral body (VB) failure load for a variety of pathologies hampers the development of indications for surgical and pharmaceutical interventions and the assessment of novel treatments. Similar models would also be of benefit in a laboratory environment in which predictions of failure load could aid experimental design when using cadaveric tissue. Finite element modelling shows great potential but the expertise required to effectively deploy this technology in a clinical environment precludes its routine use at the present time. Its deployment

Abstract:
Introduction: Despite surgical resection being the only potential cure for colorectal liver metastases, not all patients are suitable for operative intervention. Most patients who undergo surgery die of recurrent disease. Understanding tumour behaviour may identify patients who might benefit from targeted adjuvant therapy. Tumour hypoxia and angiogenesis are a negative prognostic factor in various solid tumours. Carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) have been associated with poor outcome.

In bone metastases from castration-resistant prostate cancer or urothelial bladder cancer, treatment with zoledronic acid or denosumab may reduce skeletal-related events. Samples obtained from patients who underwent liver resection for colorectal liver metastases were used for this research. Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer among men in Western developed countries. Worldwide trends towards longer life expectancy result in a more prevalent disease in an increasingly aged co-morbid population. However significant challenges remain. Prehabilitation seeks to prevent injury, or minimise its impact before it occurs. This thesis describes the developm
