Abstract:
Since 1994 the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has been publishing its annual “WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate”. The report has gradually gained in popularity and recently is a recognized authoritative source of information for the scientific community, the media and the general public. The report presented is the latest link of this successful sequence. The journal Meteorologické zprávy (Meteorological Bulletin) offers to its readers an abbreviated version of the report.

Rainfall is one meteorological parameter that affects virtually all human activities. For instance, the amount of rainfall received in an area is an important determining factor in estimating or quantifying the amount of water available to meet various demands, such as agricultural, industrial, domestic water supply, and power generation. Climate change has generally been accepted to be a result of the emission of excess greenhouse gases. It has caused an increase in flooding, severe and more frequent droughts, increase in wildfires, and heatwaves in various parts of the globe. Climate change

From 1854 to 1856 these observations were published in O Instituto, a journal of an academic society of the same name, founded in Coimbra in 1852. This new area of science aroused great interest, offering itself as unexplored territory waiting for scientific investigation. This thesis deals with Dorothy Wordsworth's Rydal Journal, a journal written between 1824 and 1835, when Dorothy Wordsworth was between ages 53 and 64. The most interesting entries in the Rydal Journal include descriptions of William's political views, famous callers at Rydal Mount, church sermons Dorothy heard, books she was reading, and her relationships and correspondence with many friends and family members. In terms of structure, Dorothy's journal entries are generally quite similar over the eleven years of these volumes. Perhaps most strikingly, the vast majority begin with a record of t

Abstract Chaos and meteorology have had a close relationship for a number of years. The Lorenz attractor is well known as a very influential mathematical model whose properties were first studied in detail in the 1960s by the meteorologist/mathematician Ed Lorenz, working at MIT. It became a prototype for chaotic dynamics in Lorenz’s celebrated paper [l], published in 1963 in the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences. The most significant point in the present context is that it was originally motivated by a meteorological problem.

Abstract Four years before John Tyndall proclaimed the inalterability of the meteorological world through spiritual forces, another Englishman faced the issue of prayer and the weather. In November 1857, George Mueller of Bristol had a problem on his hands. This man cared for hundreds of orphans, and a dangerous leak had been detected in the boiler that heated the orphanage’s buildings. Mueller had to shut down the boiler in order to repair it. The shutdown and repair were scheduled to take place on Wednesday, and all the preceding week a frigid north wind had been blowing. What was to be done

In 1999 the Earth’s atmosphere was gearing up for a special event. Towards the end of July, the 500 mb flow in the extra-tropical SH started to look more and more like a flow pattern observed some 22 years earlier in May 1977. Two trajectories in the N-dimensional phase space, N as defined in Chapter 6, were coming closer together. Figure 7.1 shows the two states at the moment of closest encounter, with the appropriate climatology subtracted. These two states are, for a domain of this size, the most similar looking patterns in recorded history. But are these good analogues? They do look alike,

Earlier, I posed the question of how privileged perspectives are established on the ubiquitous and changeable climate. Enlightenment philosophes based their arguments on the impressions of travelers and colonists. Their perspectives were framed by memory, history, and folklore; their reasoning colored by environmental determinism. Early American writers followed this pattern, adding patriotic hopes to the rhetorical mix. A new approach to the climate issue was developing, however, based on projects that set out to collect large amounts of meteorological data. Thomas Jefferson, who participated
