Guney, Murat Efe. "High-performance direct solution of finite element problems on multi-core processors." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/34662.

Full text
Abstract:
A direct solution procedure is proposed and developed which exploits the parallelism that exists in current symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) multi-core processors. Several algorithms are proposed and developed to improve the performance of the direct solution of FE problems. A high-performance sparse direct solver is developed which allows experimentation with the newly developed and existing algorithms. The performance of the algorithms is investigated using a large set of FE problems. Furthermore, operation count estimations are developed to further assess various algorithms. An out-of-core v

Abstract:
Computational fluid dynamics simulations are advancing to correctly simulate highly complex fluid flow problems that can require weeks of computation on expensive high performance clusters. These simulations can generate terabytes of data and pose a severe challenge to a researcher analyzing the data. Presented in this document is a general method to extract computational fluid dynamics flow features concurrent with a simulation and as a post-processing step to drastically reduce researcher post-processing time. This general method uses software agents governed by subjective logic to make deci

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an essential tool in modern medicine. As the scale and diversity of the medical applications of CT continue to increase, the quest for reducing the radiation dose becomes of extreme importance. However, producing high-quality images from low-dose scans has proven to be a serious challenge. Therefore, further research in developing more effective image reconstruction and processing algorithms for CT is necessary. Abstract:
Excessive imaging doses from repeated scans and poor image quality mainly due to scatter contamination are the two bottlenecks of cone-beam CT (CBCT) imaging. This study investigates a method that combines measurement-based scatter correction and a compressed sensing (CS)-based iterative reconstruction algorithm to generate scatter-free images from low-dose data. Scatter distribution is estimated by interpolating/extrapolating measured scatter samples inside blocked areas. CS-based iterative reconstruction is finally carried out on the under-sampled data to obtain scatter-free and low-dose CBC

Human tissue banks are a potential source of cellular material for the emerging cellbased therapy industry; umbilical cord tissue (UCT) private banking is increasing in such facilities as a source of mesenchymal stem cells for future therapeutic use. However, early handling of UCT is relatively uncontrolled due to the clinical demands of the birth environment and subsequent transport logistics. It is therefore necessary to develop extraction methods that are robust to real world operating conditions, rather than idealised operation. Advanced digital signal processing systems require specialized high-performance embedded computer architectures. The term high-performance translates to large amounts of data and computations per time unit. The term embedded further implies requirements on physical size and power efficiency. Thus the requirements are of both functional and non-functional nature. This thesis addresses the development of high-performance digital signal processing systems relying on manycore technology.
