Abstract:
Accumulating evidence from diverse fields of inquiry suggests the existence of method hierarchies, where criteria employed by the same epistemic agent constitute a certain preference hierarchy. In this paper, we illustrate the phenomenon of method hierarchy by discussing several prominent studies in clinical epidemiology of coronary artery disease. The current “gold standard” in clinical epidemiology is the randomized controlled trial (RCT) method. Yet, in the absence of studies that satisfy the strict requirement of the RCT method, clinical epidemiologists often relax the requirements of doub

Understanding the hierarchical patterns of building heights is essential for sustainable urban development and planning. This study presents a novel approach for detecting and comparing building height hierarchies in four major bay areas: the San Francisco Bay Area, the New York Bay Area in the United States, the Tokyo Bay Area in Japan, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area in China. Kernel density estimation was first used to create continuous spatial distributions of building heights, forming the basis for our analysis. The approach then uses the contour tree algorithm to abstr

Mesh generation is an important step in many numerical methods. We present the “Hierarchical Graph Meshing” (HGM) method as a novel approach to mesh generation, based on algebraic graph theory. The HGM method can be used to systematically construct configurations exhibiting multiple hierarchies and complex symmetry characteristics. The hierarchical description of structures provided by the HGM method can be exploited to increase the efficiency of multiscale and multigrid methods. Human activity recognition (HAR) has become an increasingly popular application of machine learning across a range of domains. Typically the HAR task that a machine learning algorithm is trained for requires separating multiple activities such as walking, running, sitting, and falling from each other. Methods of representing findings are rarely given careful consideration in applied linguistics. One example is the general preference for hierarchies rather than networks to represent relationships between concepts, largely because of the more easily understandable structure and seeming objectivity of hierarchies. However, the purported objectivity of hierarchies is open to dispute on several grounds. Networks, on the other hand, are the preferred way of representing relationships in much of cognitive psychology, mainly because they fit the research results well and are more empirically valid.

Cleaning covariance matrices is a highly non-trivial problem, yet of central importance in the statistical inference of dependence between objects. We propose here a probabilistic hierarchical clustering method, named Bootstrapped Average Hierarchical Clustering (BAHC), that is particularly effective in the high-dimensional case, i.e., when there are more objects than features. When applied to DNA microarray, our method yields distinct hierarchical structures that cannot be accounted for by usual hierarchical clustering. In this study, an image collection summarization technique was introduced according to semantic hierarchies among them. No single method is perfect for identifying causation. One response is to adopt causal pluralism: the view that causation is many things. But this is problematic. A simpler response is to take such pluralism as epistemic or methodological only. If we cannot rely on one method alone, we instead have the option of approaching causation via a number of different methods. A method is useful if it attaches to one or more of the symptoms of causation, where those symptoms are also plural. Such symptoms are the more or less reliable indicators of the presence of causation. Evidence hierarchies could
