In line with the growing recognition of fifth century Pythagoreans as the main developers of a Pythagorean philosophy, the article offers a reconstruction of Philolaus’ metaphysical framework, arguing for its potential explanatory power and anticipating some key notions in ancient metaphysics. Starting from the scala naturae in B13, I reconstruct Philolaus’ overall metaphysical framework from his fragments, exploring how it might have worked when applied to micro-macrocosmic ontology. Key to this reconstruction is musical harmony. It is shown how, by using musical harmony as a paradigm and making explicit its mathematical structure, Philolaus (a) possessed a rather sophisticated explanatory framework, capable of accounting for the complex structure of the cosmos and of living beings; and (b) began to grasp the importance of a normative, abstract, structural principles working at a different metaphysical level from the constituents of things, thus anticipating Aristotle’s distinction between material and formal causes.

The plastic surgeon is often called upon to manage the complex or chronic wound. While an understanding of the principles of surgical debridement and reconstruction is naturally required for plastic surgical practice, it behoves the surgeon to also have a thorough understanding of the non-surgical aspects of wound management. The choice of dressings should be based on an understanding of what one is trying to achieve. Dressings can be indicated to aid in closure, prevent contamination, maintain hydration, debride, temporize while waiting for surgery, treat infection, and reduce swelling and inflammation. Often the choice will be based on individual preference and local availability, but understanding the varied properties of available dressings will allow the plastic surgeon to have an algorithmic approach to wound dressing.

Abstract:
Abstract.—A major challenge in planning and executing aquatic ecosystem restoration strategies is the need to make decisions without complete understanding of ecosystems or processes affecting their conditions. Information-gathering tools such as stream classification systems, riparian-growth and wood-recruitment models, watershed assessments, historical reconstruction, and decision-support models can help reduce uncertainty in defining a path for aquatic restoration activities. We demonstrate how these tools can be used to systematically gather information for achieving improved management decisions and restoration strategies. Two major sources of uncertainty are considered: inadequate knowledge of system behavior and natural variability. Uncertainty in assessing watershed and habitat conditions to be restored reflects the lack of prior knowledge of an ecosystem’s status and functions as well as problems of coupling scientific principles with management objectives. These shortcomings arise from difficulties in defining and understanding complex ecosystem interactions and from not recognizing human limits in controlling natural environments. Additional uncertainty is due to rivers having geographically diverse and unique arrays of environmental problems and societal situations. We suggest that watershed restoration plans and efforts that incorporate uncertainty will have a greater chance of long-term success.

Some proposed phase-change models employ empirical rate parameters, or adapt heat transfer correlations, and thus must be tuned for specific applications. Generally applicable models have also been developed that rigorously resolve the phase-change process, but require interface reconstruction, significantly increasing computational cost and software complexity. Increased automation for aircraft systems holds the promise to increase safety, precision, and availability for manned and unmanned aircraft. Specifically, established aviation segments, such as general aviation and light sport, could utilize increased automation to make significant progress towards solving safety and piloting difficulties that have plagued them for some time. Further, many emerging market segments, such as urban air mobility and small unmanned (e.g., small parcel delivery with drones) have a strong financial incentive to develop increased automation to relieve the pilot workl
