Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose As the consumer experience literature broadens in scope – specifically, from dyads to ecosystems and from provider-centric to consumer-centric perspective – traditional data collection methods are no longer adequate. In that context, the paper aims to discuss three little-used data collection methods that can contribute to this broader view of consumer experience. Design/methodology/approach The paper identifies methodological requirements for exploring the broadened view of consumer experience and reviews data collection methods currently in use. Findings The paper elaborates tailored guidelines for the study of consumer experience through first-hand, systemic and processual perspectives for three promising and currently underused data collection methods: phenomenological interviews, event-based approaches and diary methods. Research limitations/implications Although the list of identified methods is not exhaustive, the methods and guidelines discussed here can be used to advance empirical investigation of consumer experience as more broadly understood. Practical implications Practitioners can apply these methods to gain a more complete view of consumers’ experiences and so offer value propositions compatible with those consumers’ lifeworlds. Originality/value The paper principally contributes to the literature in two ways: by defining the methodological requirements for investigating consumer experience from consumer-centric, systemic and processual perspectives, and by specifying a set of data collection methods that meet these requirements, along with tailored guidelines for their use.

Abstract:
Abstract Developing the critique of notions of the “integration of immigrants”, twelve propositions are advanced to diagnose the methodological nationalism of mainstream approaches. The concept of “integration” contains assumptions about the nature and functioning of modern society which, in a post-industrial and post-colonial context, are falsely trapped within the normative bounds of thinking for the nation-state. An alternate empirical operationalisation is suggested that would render traditional types of assimilation and integration research obsolete.

Abstract:
Christians, from Jerusalem to Jakarta and from the 1st to the 21st century, worship the same Jesus. However, the way that Jesus has been depicted throughout history and throughout different cultures has not been monolithic. The reason for discontinuity can be varied. One reason beneath the different descriptions of Jesus inhabits the issue of methodology. By “methodology,” I mean the ways people make sense of Jesus and present him to others. Generally, there are two main approaches to the study of Christology: “from below” and “from above”. This article explores the concept of Christology “from below,” examining its historical development, assessing its theological assumptions, and investigating its contextual applications in the global context to cultivate some biblical principles for ongoing contextual theological conversations.

Abstract:
The use of methodologies in software and knowledge engineering is very extensive due to their important advantages. In the case of the development of ontologies, until now, several methodological proposals have been presented for building ontologies. Some of these methodologies are designed for building ontologies from scratch or reusing other ontologies without modifying them, concretely, the following cases can be mentioned: the Cyc methodology, the approach proposed by Uschold and King, Grüninger and Fox's methodology, the KACTUS methodology, METHONTOLOGY and the SENSUS methodology. There is even a proposal for re-engineering ontologies, and several proposals for collaborative construction of ontologies. In this article, we describe the methodologies and check their degree of maturity, contrasting them with respect to the IEEE standard for software development. Before this, we justify to what extent this standard can be used. A conclusion to this study is that there is no completely mature methodological proposal for building ontologies, since there are some important activities and techniques that are missing in all these methodologies. However, all the methodologies do not have the same degree of maturity. In fact, METHONTOLOGY is a very mature methodology. The other conclusion of this article is that, although work to unify proposals can be interesting, maybe several approaches should coexist.

Abstract:
Purpose: The main purpose of the present paper is to present Kazimierz Dobrowolski’s integral method treated here as the proposal directed at the organization and management research in historical perspective. This method has been put forward against a background of the dominant – in the sciences of organization and management – quantitative approaches based on the positive research paradigm. His methodological proposal was referred to the main threads in methodological discussions of organizational history. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis was based on studies of literature on the methodology of organizational history and theoretical proposals found in the publications of Dobrowolski. Findings: The article shows that that Dobrowolski’s methodological proposal offers an integral method assuming a holistic nature of social reality, postulating a combination of functional and historical approaches as well as the use of materials obtained through field research and document studies. Research limitation/ implications: Dobrowolski’s concept can be applied to the study of transformation processes and relations between organization and its environment. Originality/value: The article is a pioneering attempt to analyze Dobrowolski’s theoretical and methodological concepts in the context of methodological postulates of organizational history.

Duque, Cardona Juan Carlos. "Design of Homogenous Territorial Units. A Methodological Proposal and Applications." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/1475.

Abstract:
The interest in geographical information technologies has grown considerably over the last three decades. Today, geographical information is no longer the exclusive domain of government and public administrations (in the areas of planning, demography and topography), thanks to the development of computer tools which have enabled firms and academic institutions to use this information.

Statistical information of this kind is usually published at a variety of territorial levels in order to provide information of interest to all potential users. When using this information, researches have two alternatives for defining the basic territorial units for use in the study: first, they may use geographical units designed following normative criteria (that is, officially established territorial units such as towns or provinces) or, second, they can apply analytical criteria in order to design geographical units directly related to the phenomena under examination.

Most empirical studies use geographical units based on normative criteria, for several reasons: these units are officially established, they have traditionally been used in other studies, their use makes comparison of results easier and there is less scope for criticism. However, studies using units of this type may have an "Achilles' heel": they may be very restrictive, or unsuited the problem considered. For example, if we are analysing phenomena such as the regional effects of monetary and fiscal policy, how will the results be affected if the aggregated areas^ in each region are heterogeneous? Can these results change if the areas are redefined in such a way that each region contains similar areas?

This situation could be improved by the use of regionalisation processes to design geographical units based on analytical criteria by aggregating small geographical units^, but without reaching the upper level, or alternatively by combining information obtained from different levels. In this context, the design of analytical geographical units should consider three fundamental aspects:

a. Geographical contiguity. The aggregation of areas into regions such that the areas assigned to a region are internally connected or contiguous.

b. Equality: In some cases, it is important that the regions designed are "equal" in terms of a particular variable (for example population, size, presence of infrastructures, etc).

In this thesis dissertation, the term "area" will be used to denote the smallest territorial unit. The aggregation of areas will form a "region" and the aggregation of regions will cover the whole considered territory.

Apart from aspects such as statistical secrets or other legislation on the treatment of statistical data, according to Wise et al. (1997), this kind of territorial units are designed in such a way as to be above minimum population or household thresholds, to reduce the effect of outliers when aggregating data or to reduce possible inaccuracies in the data, and to simplify information requirements for calculations and to facilitate its visualisation and interpretations in maps.

See, for example, Albert et al. (2003), who analyse the spatial distribution of economic activity using information with different levels of regional aggregation, NUTS III for Spain and France and NUTS II for other countries, with the objective of "using similar territorial units". López-Bazo et al. (1999) analyse inequalities and regional convergence at the European level in terms of GDP per capita using a database for 143 regions using NUTS II data for Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands and Portugal, and NUTS-I data for the United Kingdom, Ireland and Luxembourg so as to ensure the comparability of geographical units.

c. Interaction between areas: Some variables do not exactly define geographical characteristics that can be used to aggregate the different areas, but may describe some kind of interaction between them (for example, distance, time, number or trips between areas, etc). These variables can also be used as interaction variables using a dissimilarity measure between areas in terms of socio-economic characteristics. The objective in this kind of regionalisation process is to make the areas belonging to the same region as homogeneous as possible with regard to the attribute(s) specified.

Unfortunately, in most cases, the aggregation of territorial information is usually done using "ad-hoc" criteria, due to the lack of sufficiently flexible regionalisation methods. In fact, most of these methods have been developed to deal with very particular regionalisation problems, so when applied in other contexts the results may be highly restrictive or inappropriate for the problem under consideration. However, whatever territorial aggregation method is applied, there is an implicit risk, known in the literature as the "Modifiable Areal Unit Problem" (Openshaw, 1984): the sensitivity of the results to the aggregation of geographical data and its consequences on the analysis.

The main objective in this thesis dissertation is to implement a new automated regionalisation tool to design homogeneous geographical units directly related to the phenomena analysed which overcomes some of the disadvantages of the methodologies currently available.

Thus, the specific objectives are:

a. To formulate the regionalisation problem as a linear optimisation model able to take into account not only the areal characteristics but also their non-metric and contiguity relationships.

b. To propose a heuristic model able to solve bigger regionalisation problems, incorporating in its search procedure the characteristics of a regionalisation process.

c. To compare the homogeneity of the analytical regions designed by applying the regionalisation model proposed in this thesis with those obtained using another regionalisation method based on normative criteria. For this comparison, provincial time series of unemployment rates in Spain will be used.

This dissertation is organised as follows. Chapter 2 briefly summarises the literature on different regionalisation methods. Special emphasis will be placed on those methodologies which have made the greatest impact on the specialist literature and on those that have been tested satisfactorily in real problems.

In chapter 3 the regionalisation problem is formulated as a linear optimisation model in which the problem of obtaining r homogeneous regions is based on the minimisation of the total heterogeneity, measured as the sum of the dissimilarity relationships between areas belonging to the same region. The proposed model has the following characteristics:

a. It is an automated regionalisation model that is able to design a given number of homogeneous geographical units from aggregated small areas subject to contiguity requirements.

b. The aggregation process takes into account not only the characteristics of each area but also the relationships between them (symmetric and not necessarily metric).

c. By formulating the regionalisation problem as a linear optimisation problem, we have the chance of finding the global optimum from among all feasible solutions.

d. More consistent solutions can be easily obtained by introducing additional constraints taking into account other specific requirements that are relevant for the regionalisation process.

e. There is more freedom than in other methodologies regarding the shapes of the regions, which depend only on data characteristics and are not imposed by the methodology chosen.

f. With this model a region consists of two or more contiguous areas; this implies that no region can be formed by a single area.
In order to apply this model in larger-scale regionalisation processes, Chapter 4 presents an algorithm called the RASS (Regionalisation Algorithm with Selective Search). The key advantage of this new algorithm is that the way it operates is based on the features of regionalisation processes themselves, where available information about the relationships between areas can play a crucial role in directing the search process more selective, more efficient and less random fashion. In fact, the RASS incorporates inside the linear optimisation model presented in chapter 3 in order to achieve local improvements in the objective function. These improvements can generate significant changes in regional configurations, changes that would be very difficult to obtain using other adapted iterative methods.

In Chapter 5 provincial time series of unemployment rates in Spain are used to compare the results obtained by applying two analytical regionalisation models, each one representing a different regionalisation strategy: a two-stage procedure based on cluster analysis and the RASS algorithm. The results will also be compared with normative regions available at two different scales: NUTS II and NUTS I.

Lastly, in Chapter 6 we present the most important conclusions and make proposals for further research lines.

Delgado, Villanueva Kiko Alexi. "Methodological proposal for social impact assessment and environmental conflict analysis." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de València, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/64063.

Full text
Abstract:
[EN] Social impact assessment (SIA) is a part of environmental impact assessment (EIA), which is characterized by a high level of uncertainty and the subjective aspects that are presents in the methods used during its conduction. In addition, environmental conflict analysis (ECA) has become a key factor for the viability of projects and welfare of affected populations. In this thesis, an integrated method for SIA and ECA is proposed, by the combination of the grey clustering method and the entropy-weight method. SIA was performed using the grey clustering method, which enables qualitative information coming from a stakeholder group to be quantified. In turn, ECA was performed using the entropy-weight method, which identifies the criteria in which there is greater divergence between stakeholder groups, thus enabling to establish measures to prevent potential environmental conflicts. Then, in order to apply and test the proposed integrated method, two case studies were conducted. The first case study was a mining project in northern Peru. In this study, three stakeholder groups and seven criteria were identified. The results revealed that for the urban population group and the rural population group, the project would have a positive and negative social impact, respectively. For the group of specialists the project would have a normal social impact. It was also noted that the criteria most likely to generate environmental conflicts in order of importance were: access to drinking water, poverty, GDP per capita, and employment. The second case study considered was a hydrocarbon exploration project located in the Gulf of Valencia, Spain. In this study, four stakeholder groups and four criteria were identified. The results revealed that for the group of specialists the project would have a negative social impact, and contrary perceptions were shown between the group of those directly affected by the project and the group of citizens in favour. It was also noted that the criteria most likely to generate environmental conflict were the percentage of unemployment and GDP per capita. The proposed integrated method in this thesis showed great potential on the studied cases, and could be applied to other contexts and other projects, such as water resources management, industrial projects, construction projects, and to measure social impact and prevent conflicts during the implementation of government policies and programs.

This paper aims to propose a calculation methodology to measure the water footprint (PH) in the real estate construction activity. The water footprint is an empirical quantity indicator, the period and the place where the water is consumed and polluted, which is measured over the entire productive chain of a product showing not only the volume of water, as well as the type of water use (consumptive, rain, surface or underground, or water pollution), the location and the time when water was used. To calculate the water footprint in housing construction activity was used the methodology of Hoekstra et al. (2011) using the partial concept of 'blue water' - a kind of measure of ownership of the water footprint determined by consumption, evaporation and runoff into the ocean - in its use / consumption for human purposes in order to estimate the quantum of water is required to produce a residential building. The measurement was divided into three groups that make up civil construction activity, namely: labor, materials and services. The results showed statistically that a sample of 90 workers could be extrapolated to the average of workers employed throughout the work (115 employees), allowing to measure the volume of water consumption (water footprint) for the group of hand work was 1124068200.0 l of water (distributed direct and indirect) for the materials group consisting of 128 items that have water component, the water footprint was 30,100,539.5 l of water (Indirect) and for the service group, consisting of 92 items that use water, the water footprint was 584,427,948.4 l of water (Direct), ie the total of the enterprise the water footprint of 1738596688.0 l . The most relevant consumption workmanship were given to the categories 'liquid' and 'other higienes' in PH Direct and 'industrialized' and 'transport' in PH Indirect; for the most outstanding materials was evidenced in 'irons CA' (PH Indirect), and in services, the largest water consumption was evident in the service of 'mechanical protection' (PH Direct). The total amount of water consumption (1738596688.0 l) divided by the total area of the project (in m2) resulted in 93978.2 l / m2, where the housing unit of 157.14 m2 has a water footprint of 14,767. 734.2 l and 167.12 m2 one water footprint of 15705636.8 l. It follows that the water footprint is a calculation method capable of measuring the volume of water consumed in construction activity, allowing builders estimate this volume from the work planning stage in order to manage this scarce environmental resource

Abstract:
The aim of this Doctoral Thesis is to predict the PhD students' academic performance in the University of Girona from characteristics of their research group understood as a social network and from background and attitudinal characteristics of the PhD student.
The data collection was done through web survey, regarding the traditional problems related to coverage and response errors. Web survey was made in order to reduce the complexity of social network questions.
The quality of social network questions for questionnaires with egocentered data is analyzed. For this, reliability and validity of this kind of questions are computed, for first time using a Multilevel Multitrait-Multimethod approach. Data are egocentered and thus hierarchy can be used. Reliability and validity can be obtained in an individual level (within group component) or group level (between group component), which are used for carrying out a meta analysis with other European universities. We study if social network questions asked in web questionnaires are more reliable and valid done "by questions" or "by alters", if the frequency labels are present or not and if the best questionnaire design is plane or graphical.
Social network as a whole is also studied, in this case are the research groups in the University of Girona. There is a proposal for the missing data problem in complete networks, different from the egocentered network. This new network structure is called "Nosduocentered Network", which is based in two central actors in a network. Regression model estimations explain that this network has more predictive power in order to predict the academic performance for PhD students.
Finally, regression models with background, attitudinal and social network variables are done. Then, we combine the regressions in order to specify the best combination which predicts the PhD student's performance (according to academic publications) best. According to the results, the academic performance depends on background and attitudinal variables. Also, a comparison of results from other published studies is done.

The consideration of transmission costs is essential for an isonomic economic valuation of generation projects due to the competition among different sources. The transmission costs tend to be greater for power plants located far from the load centers than for those that are closer. The transmission cost of each agent is calculated through a tariff, whose value depends on the point of connection and might reflect a locational signal of the transmission network s portion effectively used. The existing methodologies have limitations that greatly hinders the locational signal, therefore, is required a complementary charge known as postage stamp that can be quite significant when compared with the locational portion. The existing methodologies do not consider the multiple dispatch scenarios for allocation of the transmission costs, which is a very important issue and can greatly influence the allocation and create a cost recovery problem, especially in countries with a strong presence of hydroelectric plants. Another important issue to be considered in methodologies for allocation of transmission costs is the calculation of the transmission tariff varying in accordance with the load blocks, whose benefit is enable the consumers to respond to the transmission tariff s economic signal, increasing economic efficiency. This thesis presents a new methodology based on the AS scheme that incorporates the multiple dispatch scenarios and provides the calculation of the transmission tariff per load block. To illustrate the application of the proposed methodology, it was used a 3 bus test system and the Bolivian power system. The proposed methodology is compared with the following methods: (i) Average Participation Factors (APF); (ii) Long Run Marginal Cost (LRMC) and (iii) Original AS. The results showed that the use of the proposed methodology significantly improved the locational signal, reducing the need of the postage stamp portion of the transmission tariff.

Abstract:
The challenges surrounding the national education are countless, especially considering the many areas of knowledge with which the curriculum of Brazilian schools are structured. On all sides teachers and students are immersed in various orientations and often contradictory to the construction of multiple knowledge. The result of this dynamic is a paradoxical educational process in its essence and with indexes of improvement in studies not always positive. The institutional evaluations proposed each year end up ratifying this reality and revealing how the proposed methodological effect in classrooms across the country are distant from promoting the excellence so desired. In this sense, academic discussions are imminent, which may arise suggestions of methodological work that far from the ideal of full resolution of problems, can, unlike, inspire news proposals so that the education is, effectively, an equalization of social inequalities. In harmony with this collaborative approach, this study focuses the problem of teaching Literature in high school and has as main goal the composition of a suggestion of activity to promote the literacy reading and aimed at the formation of the critical reader with the theoretical contributions of this study, we sought to show that working with the literature is closely linked to teaching reading strategies because, unlike traditional Literary Historiography classes, what must be proposed to the students in this final stage of basic education, is a work aimed at the reading in which the artistic text is the target of appreciation and not just its context, author or esthetic to which it is joined and the reader is still motivated to make use of strategies for understanding. Besides theorizing, this research also counts with data collected in field from the application of questionnaires in a public school in Vale do Paraiba. The link between the theoretical and practical aspects that compose this study culminate with the proposition of a didactic sequence for reading a pessoano poem, in which possibilities are highlighted to promote contact with the literacy genre, named as the target of comprehension difficulties by the subjects of study while it promotes the mobilization for the use of reading strategic by the leaner/ reader.

Big digital media companies have embraced agile methods to develop products in shorter cycles. With this, the time to test the interfaces was reduced. Through observations, we found that short tests do not always answer to all questions that need investigation with users. In order to propose a methodology for empirical usability evaluation, designed specifically to better fit the needs of teams who develop products with agile methods, we performed a case study in Globo.com, with the team that designed the site Receitas.com through the Scrum agile methodology. With the completion of a focus group, we assessed the scene and found the research questions. From there, it was found that application of only one technique would not answer most of these issues. Moreover, if applied in a more traditional way, could take a long time. As a hypothesis, it was believed that the creation and application of a methodology for empirical evaluation of usability, specifically designed to better match the needs of these teams, would be able to solve the problem through the optimization and application of techniques together, such as interview, eye tracking and usability testing. The methodology was validated through interviews with each team member s development Receitas.com. The results confirmed the hypothesis.

Abstract:
Agricultural land and woodland in the vicinity of urban settlements appear increasingly to represent a key element and strategic resource for addressing issues of residential quality, and hence the requalification of the urban construct. In effect, from a "vacuum" awaiting construction, the periurban agricultural territory is emerging as the yardstick for a new measurement and integration of the public policies governing urban and territorial plans and those for rural development. This book proposes a number of cues and methodological and operational elements to stimulate reflection on this new scenario. It does so through the exploration of a number of significant and innovative experiences in Italy and the rest of Europe, while at the same time also proposing an initial appraisal of the process of design and social mobilisation for the definition of the scenario for the Prato Agricultural Park.

For decades we have been immersed in a constant change in our society, registered together with an increase in its degree of complexity. This greatly affects the currently prevailing educational axioms, making them obsolete, which implies, according to our hypothesis, the need for a process of revision and innovation of existing models. Our proposal starts from a bibliographic review of some existing proposals in innovation, to create a new pedagogical model based on polyhedral and transdisciplinary methodologies. At the same time, we offer a case study in a core subject of the first teacher training course at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. After the practical application of our transdisciplinary methodological theories, it has been possible to successfully collect evidence of a balanced interaction between disciplinary areas by students. The application of the innovations can become a frame of reference for higher education institutions interested in following this very important process of adaptation to social reality.

Abstract:
"Intensive human economic activity has led to decrese in the natural resource potential of territories and qualitative changes in the natural environment surrounding a person: a violation of the spatial and functional structure of natural systems, a decrease in the biological diversity of flora and fauna, a deterioration in the quality of water and land resources, a decrease in the ecological and economic sustainability of technical and natural systems and the quality of human life. Ensuring the sustainable functioning and development of territories is possible due to the complex arrangement of the territory (scientific organisation of the territory). It is the optimisation of the land using structure that will restore disturbed ecosystems to standard values, increase biological diversity, environmental sustainability and economic efficiency of landscapes. One of the limiting factors in the implementation of this measure is the lack of an effective mechanism for assessing the effectiveness of investments in land development. All this indicates the need to develop proposals for the development of methodological approaches to assessing the environmental and economic efficiency of investments in land development, taking into account the shortcomings that we identified when analyzing existing approaches to assessing the effectiveness of investment projects of social significance. At the same time, it should be noted that ensuring sustainable development of territories is impossible with the existing nature-intensive concept of economic development. A new approach to solving this problem is needed, which should: • be based on a deep study of socio-economic and environmental problems, a retrospective analysis of the state of landscapes and a long-term forecast of the expected consequences of the impact of human activity on the state of individual components of the considered territory and the landscape as a whole; • it aims to ensure the socio-economic and environmental safety of Russia. The рurpose is to develop proposals for the development of a methodological approach to assessing the environmental and economic efficiency of investments in the integrated development of territories which are aimed at ensuring the socio-economic and environmental security of Russia."

Abstract:
The aim of the research project EINSTEIN was the development of a technology prototype for the optimization of maintenance strategies for traffic infrastructure based on risk management principles. In addition to the current condition based structural maintenance planning it was aspired to broaden mid-term budget forecasting for existing infrastructure based on the developed risk models in order to evaluate the impact of different maintenance strategies and methodological approaches in terms of direct and indirect Life Cycle Costs. Subsequently the results of this analysis are used to determine the most favourable option from the operational and economic point of view in terms of calculated Life Cycle Management (LCM) proposals. The developed models were implemented into an asset management application and tested by means of two pilot projects for road and railway infrastructure for both clients - ASFINAG (Federal Austrian Highways) and ÖBB (Federal Austrian Railways). The current publication focuses on the comparative analysis of 90 railway bridges along a track section of 54km length.

Abstract:
The agricultural sector of the economy is system-forming for Ukraine, guarantees the provision of food security of the state, forms the basis for the development of rural territories, influences environmental security, stimulates the development of other sectors of the economy. The level of financial security of the agrarian sector of the Ukrainian economy is caused by a number of factors, such as seasonal nature of production, limited shelf life of products, price disparity, low profitability, etc. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to analyze the development of the agro-industrial complex of Ukraine and the activities of the leading agroholdings of Ukraine, as well as to develop proposals for strengthening the financial security of the agricultural sector based on the results obtained. The goal of the study is based on a systematic approach and comparative economic analysis. The methodological basis is the general scientific methods and mechanisms for ensuring the financial security of enterprises. The conducted research has made it possible to establish that in recent years the financial security of the agricultural sector in Ukraine is carried out mainly through a set of programs, each of which is aimed at improving production efficiency. Over the past five years, capital investment and credit in agriculture have increased significantly. The article substantiates the need to manage the financial security of agro-industrial enterprises at the present stage of socio-economic development of Ukraine. The practical significance of the obtained results is determined by the fact that the conclusions and proposals can be used in the formation of the financial security strategy of the agricultural sector and the development of a mechanism for its implementation.

Abstract:
This paper is about how framing an innovative approach for community empowerment by organising networks and consortia for preparing proposals in different research programme frameworks. In the beginning, there was as study for classifying underground spaces and using them as a solution for a sustainable over ground urban development. By advancing in the proposals preparation, the team developed a completely different vision. The underground space was more and more seen as a place for building local identity and sense of belonging, progressing from a functional to a cultural value, from a site conservation to a community valorisation approach, by giving centrality to the people and their needs. As first step, the project faced the challenge of regenerating urban areas by realising Underground Built Heritage potential for local communities and experimenting a methodological approach on sustainability transition. Just like a story, the paper describes the evolution of the approaches, and the implementation of the activities, also if unsuccessful in the competition. The consortium grew and matured, a network based on strong analysis and revision, whose members developed an impressive social capital and learned by any failure. Piece by piece, this network was able to achieve the success, and to start a COST Action, the CA 18110 “Underground Built Heritage as catalyser for Community Valorisation”. The Action, funded for establishing and implementing an expert network, promotes balanced and sustainable approaches to preserve the Underground Built Heritage (UBH) and, at the same time, to realise the potential of the underground space in urban and rural areas for regeneration policies. The paper finally explains how a wellmotivated group of people can transform a network activity, with a little budget, in a research and on field project and how such a network can provide innovative tools for engaging and empowering local communities.

"Outline of the Recent Consolidated Revision of EN13445-3, Clause 18 and Related Annexes: Detailed Assessment of Fatigue Life." In ASME 2019 Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2019-93910.

Abstract:
Abstract The European Pressure Vessel Standard EN 13445 (harmonized Standard acc. to PED 2014/68/EU) provides in its Part 3 (Design) a simplified method for fatigue assessment (Clause 17) and a detailed method of fatigue assessment (Clause 18). While the new revision of Clause 17 has already been adopted, Clause 18 “Detailed Assessment of Fatigue Life” is now available as a consolidated revision in inquiry phase. This major and comprehensive revision has been developed within the framework of the European working group CEN/TC 54/WG 53 – Design methods and constitutes a crucial step towards a modern and user-friendly engineering fatigue assessment method. The overall structure and amendments of Clause 18 are to be presented. All these amendments aim at a significant increase in user friendliness and clear guidelines for application. The following items are to be mentioned in that context: • Fatigue assessment of welded components based on structural stress and structural hot-spot stress approaches, • Detailed guidelines for determining relevant stresses and stress ranges, • Cycle counting proposals in the context of the fatigue assessment method including a critical plane approach. The fatigue assessment of welded components is separated from the fatigue assessment of un-welded parts as it has already been done in previous versions with respective methodological differences. Stress analyses for clause 18 are usually based on detailed finite element analyses (FEA). As an essential amendment for the user, the determination of structural stress ranges for the fatigue assessment of welds is further detailed in a new appropriate annex. Different applicable methods for the determination of structural stresses are explained in connection with the requirements of the finite element models and analyses. The cycle counting issue is comprehensively treated in the context of different design and operation situations (design transients, operational stress-time-histories). The description is detailed towards a critical plane approach. Detailed proposals for implementation in an algorithmic programming framework are given making the described methods ready to use.
