Lam, Sik Chun Joey. "Methods for resolving inconsistencies in ontologies." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.487418.

Abstract:
OWL ontologies are becoming increasingly important to the Semantic Web. Inconsistencies in OWL ontologies can easily occur, and it is a challenging task for ontology modellers, especially for non-expert ontology modellers, to resolve ~uch inconsistencies. Existing ontology debugging tools can identify the problematic axioms for unsatisfiable concepts. However, current systems provide limited support for selecting which problematic axioms to remove/modify to resolve the unsatisfiability. In the case of modification, the modellers are provided with limited information about the impact of changes

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis are apparent conflicts between fundamental rights, which represent one of the most important problems contemporary legal systems are faced with. More specifically, this thesis presents and analyses different legal methods that have been suggested as answers to the problem. Contemporary constitutions usually contain provisions protecting certain fundamental rights, such as the right to life, the right to privacy, the right to freedom of expression, personality rights, the right to health, etc. The problem can arise when two (or more) provisions protecting fundamental

Palms support the largest leaves in the world and have evolved on Earth for over 120 million years. They are often reported to be the only structure left standing post-hurricane. Cross-sectional shapes of cantilevered structures are important design factors affecting torsional and bending performance. Understanding the shape contribution of natural sections such as palm petioles (modified leaf stalks) is more difficult than those for simple 2D shapes because conventional methods of calculating section properties are not well suited to these irregular shapes. Cells are complex biological units with advanced signalling systems, a dynamic capacity to adapt to its environment, and the ability to divide and grow. In fact, they are of such high level of complexity that it has deemed extremely difficult or even impossible to completely understand cells as complete units. The search for comprehending the cell has instead been divided into small, relatively isolated research fields, in which simplified models are used to explain cell biology. The result produced through these reductionistic investigations is integral for our current description of biology.

Sport performance is the result of a complex and challenging blend of many factors. Sport coaches and National Goveming Bodies (NGBs) of sport have begun to recognise that the most efficacious way of preparing athletes for competition is one based upon proven scientific methods and not upon trial and error judgements. Such a response flies in the face of much of the coaching folklore that has been passed down through the generations. Indeed, it is not so long ago that most sport coaches would treat the idea of support from a sport scientist with abject cynicism. Today, however, it is far more

The inference of species boundaries and phylogenetic relationships are fundamental for evolutionary, ecological, and conservation studies. The resolution of species boundaries and the inference of phylogenetic relationships among species are required to define the units of analysis and to find the most closely related units for evaluating alternative models of speciation. Active marine electromagnetic methods have proven to be a powerful tool to detect resistivity anomalies associated with gas hydrate. So far only bulk electrical properties have been estimated from measured data, although hydrate bearing layers are found to be highly heterogeneous. Near shore hydrodynamics has been an important research area dealing with coastal processes. The nearshore coastal region is the region between the shoreline and a fictive offshore limit which usually is defined as the limit where the depth becomes so large that it no longer influences the waves. This spatially limited but highly energetic zone is where water waves shoal, break and transmit energy to the shoreline and are governed by highly dispersive and non-linear effects. An accurate understanding of this phenomena is extremely useful, especially in emergency situations during hurricanes an

Rozprawa dotyc
