Properly disposal of industrial waste is a recurring issue due to its large volume and environmental impact. In turn, civil construction has shown itself to be a potential consumer of waste and can contribute to expanding the circular economy. Clay matrix materials have been a focus of interest for absorbing waste, with the possibility of varying their aesthetics, depending on the waste, as an exposed clay brick. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the research and technological trends on the topic to truly meet the demands of the market and society, in an innovative and sustainable way.

(1) Background: The aim of our study is to present the results of initial growth and plant physiology studies of newly selected, vegetative propagated black locust clones, with a view to assess their suitability for the establishment of fast growing tree plantations for the production of high quality timber in marginal (semi-arid) sites. (2) Methods: In the spring (May) and autumn (November) of 2021, full inventories were carried out in the black locust industrial tree plantation. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values were observed monthly from May to September 2021. For mea

Background. Tokunoshima is a remote island in the Amami Islands, 470 km southwest of the Kagoshima mainland. It has a population of 23,000 and consists of three towns: Tokunoshima, Isen, and Amagi. Three medical institutions on the island are responsible for blood transfusion medicine, but there is no blood stockpiling station on the island, and blood is stockpiled in each of the hospitals. Although Tokunoshima Tokushukai Hospital is responsible for 70% of transfusion medicine on Tokunoshima, it is difficult to maintain a sufficient amount of blood in stock considering disposal. Aim. In order to derive the burnup of spent nuclear fuel from the concentration of selected fission products (typically the Nd isotopes and 137Cs), their irradiation-averaged fission yields need to be known with sufficient accuracy, as they evolve with the changes in the actinide vector over the irradiation history. To obtain irradiation-averaged values, radiochemists often resort to robust generic methods – i.e., based on simple mathematical relations – that weight the fission yields according to the actinides contributing to fission, without performing core physics calculations. Inventories of the necromass of coarse woody debris typically involve measurements of density (e.g., kilograms per cubic metre) on a sample of logs, with densities of other logs estimated based on assignment to decay classes. Here, we compare two new devices for assessing density of woody debris, a spring penetrometer and a dynamic penetrometer, with the traditional decay classification and knife test in terms of the strength of the relationship with measured density and the consistency in measurements by four different people. Our evaluation was conducted in a diverse tropical forest and invo

Objective biomarkers have been a critical challenge for the field of psychiatry, where diagnostic, prognostic, and theranostic assessments are still based on subjective narratives. Psychopathology operates with idiographic knowledge and subjective evaluations incorporated into clinical assessment inventories, but is considered to be a medical discipline and, as such, uses medical intervention methods (e.g., pharmacological, ECT; rTMS; tDCS) and, therefore, is supposed to operate with the language and methods of nomothetic networks. Abstract Elevated concentration of ammonium (NH4 +) has been identified as one of the problems with groundwater because it indicates anthropogenic disturbance. In this study, we evaluated the NH4 + presence in Indonesian groundwater and the land-use conditions possibly related to the issues. In addition, this research presents practical strategies for reducing NH4 + concentrations in groundwater. The spatial distribution shows that high levels of NH4 + are found in densely populated areas. Furthermore, land-uses analysis reveals that considerable concentrations of NH4 + were found in several l

Abstract. To explore the effects of data and method on emission estimation, two inventories of NH3 emissions of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in eastern China were developed for 2014 based on constant emission factors (E1) and those characterizing agricultural processes (E2). The latter derived the monthly emission factors and activity data integrating the local information of soil, meteorology, and agricultural processes. The total emissions were calculated to be 1765 and 1067 Gg with E1 and E2, respectively, and clear differences existed in seasonal and spatial distributions. Elevated

Data physicalisations, or physical visualisations, represent data physically, using variable properties of physical media. As an emerging area, Data physicalisation research needs conceptual foundations to support thinking about and designing new physical representations of data and evaluating them. Yet, it remains unclear at the moment (i) what encoding variables are at the designer’s disposal during the creation of physicalisations, (ii) what evaluation criteria could be useful, and (iii) what methods can be used to evaluate physicalisations.
