Clusters of metal ions that possess large numbers of magnetically coupled unpaired electrons have attracted much interest in recent years due to their fascinating magnetic behavior. With an appreciable component of magnetic anisotropy, these large-spin paramagnetic molecules can exhibit an energy barrier to inversion of their magnetic dipole, leading to spontaneous magnetization and magnetic hysteresis below a critical temperature. Since this behavior is a property of an individual clusters rather than a collection of molecules, this phenomenon has been dubbed ??Single Molecule Magnetism??.

The oxidation of several transition metal cyanides by illuminated colloidal titanium dioxide has been studied with attention to end products and rate of reaction. Tetracyanozinc, a weak complex, and ferricyanide, a stable complex were the primary focus. The rate of complex dissociation of ferricyanide was found to depend on pH. The rate of oxidation of cyanide was found to be the same both complexed and as alkali cyanide. Although the precipitation of metal oxide onto the catalyst occurred, there was no evidence that it interfered in the oxidation of cyanide.

The work presented herein focuses on the synthesis and characterization of new cyanide bridged molecular magnetic materials that form discrete molecules as well as three dimensional networks. This research is inspired by the recognition that the Prussian blue (PB) family exhibits a wide range of interesting magnetic properties such as photomagnetism, spin crossover, and high TC magnets owing to the presence of the cyanide bridge that promotes magnetic communication between adjacent metal spins. An underexplored facet of this research is the systematic development of the topic with anisotropic

Abstract:
Many interesting physical phenomena have been observed in electron-stimulated desorption studies of the cyanide molecule on alkali halide and alkali metal surfaces. We have performed a theoretical investigation of the nature of the cyanide-surface bond and of the desorption process using an ab initio density functional theoretic method of calculating electronic structure in the local density and Born-Oppenheimer approximations. We compare our results with experiment, and offer an explanation for an anomalous non-Boltzmann, temperature-independent rotational distribution experimentally observed

The local information provided by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) makes it an ideal method for the structural investigations of materials lacking extended long-range ordering. This work focuses on investigations of two types of materials possessing very different types of disorder. The first section involves investigations of alkali borate glasses and the application of solid-state NMR techniques to probe short- and medium-range ordering in such glasses. Differences between the various alkali borates over a wide compositional range are probed using one and two-dimensional techniques. The us

Abstract:
The cyanide ligand has frequently been used to prepare clusters with novel magnetic properties due to its ability to provide an efficient pathway for superexchange between metal centers that are bound in an end-to-end fashion. One of the common synthetic approaches in this chemistry is to design suitable cyanide containing precursors and then to react such building blocks with metal complexes consisting of accessible sites. The triphos ligand (triphos: 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane) has been employed in this vein to prepare metal complexes, one of which is a five coordinate paramag

The modified electrode has been successfully prepared by means of electrostatically trapping the Mo(CN)84- mediator in the cationic film of glutaraldehyde-cross-linked poly-L-lysine. The dependence of peak current of modified electrode in pure supporting indicates that the charge transfer process was surface confined at low scan rates ( 5 to 200 mV s-
