Full textOur study of women and work in Rome is based upon a collection of sources that aims to be as complete as possible despite their diverse nature: iconography, epigraphy, literary and legal documents. Having observed the sometimes-surprising lacunae in former studies on women in Ancient Rome, the present study intends to redefine the question. Where are women in the Roman work and business world? Who are these women? How is it possible that, in a culture that does not value labour very much, women have so openly vindicated their being part of the working world? How did their contemporary depict women’s work, in words or images? Another important purpose of the study was to define the gender distribution of roles among workers. Sometimes, one is surprised by women, for they are found where they are not expected, in areas such as academia, craftsmanship, commerce, business management, or banking. They were of course found in more expected professions, such as maids, beauticians, or nannies. But even then, what was their real part in thoses activities? Were these functions so expected from women ? The main goal of this study was to provide a complete analysis of urban female work and activities, during the Early Empire in Gaul and Italy. The reflections organize around the rather simple opposition between women inside and women outside, but the plainness of such a concept also permitted to reveal many movements, changes and evolutions

Full textThe thesis compares the epigraphical documentation of port occupations of six Mediterranean cities (Aquileia, Ostia-Portus, Arles, Lyon, Narbonne, Hispalis). The first part studies the latin words concerning port occupations to determine the role of the professionals. This first part must be viewed in addition to the documentary corpus. The second part studies the social hierarchy inside port occupations and aims to identify elements of identity and social cohesion inside the port. Finally, the last part estimates the place of port professionals in local economy and inside the elites. The link with other cities is also considered

Full textThe richness of documentation on pharaonic music aroused the interest of researchers since the beginning of the XIXth century. The bibliography on this topic is now abundant. Yet, an analysis of the historiography reveals that many aspects of music in Ancient Egypt have removed unexplored. This result from the fact that this field of research has been torn between many disciplines and that the musicological approach always prevailed on a genuine egyptological approach. It is thus necessary to study music considering this new problematic, that is to say to analyse in which contexts music intervenes, on which occasions and who are the players. In this perspective, the observation of the musicians of ancient Egypt was related to the informations obtained trough the sources. A prosophographic corpus makes the inventory of the whole titled musicians between the Ist and the XXth dynasties and an iconographic corpus illustrates their art practice. The synthesis offers a typology of the Ancient Egypt musicians organized by titles and musical specificities described by the iconography. Then, the study of the various musical professions is based on the musicians organization and hierarchy, places of work and clothes. Their social and economic status is also taken in account as well as their career. This thesis tries to demonstrate that a strict analysis of the pharaonic documentation organized with a clearly defined problematic allow to better understand the nature of ancient Egypt music
