At present, there is an urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the climate change that threatens humanity and our planet’s ecosystems. A way to achieve this is by increasing renewable energy production, where solar photovoltaic plays a key role. However, the current commercial crystalline silicon photovoltaic technology might not be enough to achieve the required targets. In this work, we describe the latest advances of an emerging photovoltaic technology known as perovskites. Abstract:
Understanding the physical interaction between biomaterials and tissues within the body is critical for the development of medical devices. For instance, the coefficient of friction between the two must be low enough to avoid damaging the cells that make up the tissue. Therefore, a method for obtaining friction data on cells is needed. In the present work, human corneal epithelial (HCE-T) cells are cultured within specialized cell holders and friction experiments are performed with a micro-tribometer. Cell damage is assessed via microscopy and a trypan blue viability assay. Preliminary experim

However, this test does not permit the determination of the number of viable cells within the spheroid at different stages of cultivation. Instead, it provides an indirect indication of the metabolic activity of cells. In this study, we propose a method for estimating the number of viable cells in a cell spheroid using the MTT test.

The characterization of single cells within heterogeneous populations has great impact on both biomedical sciences and cancer research. By investigating cellular compositions on a broad scale, pertinent outliers may be lost in the sample set. Alternatively, an investigation focused on the behavior of specific cells, such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), will reveal genetic biomarkers or phenotypic characteristics associated with cancer and metastasis. On average, CTC concentration in peripheral blood is extremely low, as few as one to two per billion of healthy blood cells. Consequently, the

In this study, an efficient method of approximating individual fuel cell impedances in a stack is proposed and experimentally verified. Two different proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stacks (600 W with 24 cells and 1.2 kW with 47 cells) were used to develop and verify the method. Both PEM fuel cell stacks were operated using room air and pure hydrogen (99.999%). Impedance and current - voltage (I-V) data were collected for stack and individual cell levels under various operating conditions. The experimental result shows that the individual cell impedance is directly proportional to the

Cell adhesion plays a pivotal role in diverse biological processes, including inflammation and thrombosis. Changes in cell adhesion can be the defining event in a wide range of diseases, including cancer, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, and arthritis. Cells are exposed constantly to hemodynamic/hydrodynamic forces and the balance between the dispersive hydrodynamic forces and the adhesive forces generated by the interactions of membrane-bound receptors and their ligands determines cell adhesion. The ultimate objective of our work is to develop software that can simulate the adhesion of cells co

An automated cell counter is a machine that uses either image analysis or electrical impedance principles to count cells automatically. The electrical impedance principle involves measuring changes in electrical resistance as cells pass through an aperture, while the light-scattering principle observes how cells scatter light when exposed to it. There are four main types of automated cell counting methods: Coulter Counter, Image Analysis Method, Flow Cytometry, and Stereological Cell Counting. Each method has its benefits and limitations, offering faster and more objective cell counting compar

Abstract:
This Coastal and Hydraulics engineering technical note (CHETN) presents a methodology to compute normal forces on wetland perimeters with vertically scarped edges. The approach uses an empirical algorithm that predicts the normal force given the offshore vessel wake height, period, and water depth at a given point. Wave impact forces are measured using load cells, which have not been applied previously to marsh settings. Load cell and vessel wake measurements from two field sites are combined to generate an empirical transfer function relating forces to incoming vessel wake characteristics.
