Abstract:
Currently there are few real initiatives to improve the form of payment of public transport in Lima. For users of Metropolitano and Corredores de Lima it is common to make long lines to buy cards, recharge and check balance. This generates disagreement that affects the good service of both transport systems. Abstract:
This assignment is about the development of an E-commerce platform dedicated to facilitating rental services for three categories: Weddings and parties, business conferences and rooftops. For this business opportunity we have two types of clients: The Property owners and the clients interested in renting the spaces mentioned above. Conducting an investigation, we discovered that our target of clients are mainly from “Lima Moderna” and belong to the socioeconomic levels “A” and “B”. We also identified that these clients don’t have much free time to visit every space they would like to rent and that’s why they prefer to find these type of services online but maintaining the security and the quality of the process. Therefore, they choose to purchase products and services through various E-Commerce platforms and social networks. Based on the digital startups trend, we decided to develop “Metro Cuadrado” in order to solve the identified problem, which is the lack of flexibility of renting a space for a certain amount of time. By creating this platform, we give clients the opportunity to connect with specific spaces instantly and at the same time create another source of income for the owners. For the launch of this project, the following analysis was made: consumer habits and lifestyles, competitors and other external factors. In addition, we developed strategies which contain the necessary steps to be made for the viability of this project. As a result, after an initial investment of 15,249.49 soles; the project generates a positive cash flow on the second year, with an Net Profit of S/ 32,107 and a net margin of 18% for the third year. Based on the data obtained, we see “Metro Cuadrado” as a profitable and scalable business idea with a value of S/ 164,770 and a payback period of one year and eight months.
Trabajo de investigación

Abstract:

Abstract:
Metro travellers experience disorientation during unexpected traffic disruptions, such as service interruptions due to forgotten luggage. We first explore the structure of these disorientations and the general experience of metro travel. We posit that the fundamentally temporal experience of disorientation during unexpected disruptions shares functional underpinnings with spatial disorientation and manifests across various degrees of consciousness. We argue that the metro experience embodies liminality, characterised by the margins of urban temporal, spatial, and social structures. These theoretical frameworks are further explored through three empirical studies. By administering psychometric questionnaires during disruptions, we reveal that passengers’ disorientation is marked by a temporal dilation, essentially linked to the sense of agency. We also uncover how memories of disorientation experiences are compressed and distorted over time (study 1). We then validate an instrument to measure the transparency of disruption descriptions, enabling us to identify possible improvements in service quality (study 2). Finally, we generate an innovative dataset comprising hundreds of thousands of passenger responses to disruption announcements, which we analyse using a large language model and a phenomenological approach. The experience of disorientation, while secondary in the metro experience, articulates a three-stage emotional dynamic – perplexity, helplessness, anxiety – to which passenger information must respond (study 3)

During the autumn of 2013 the Swedish government announced that they intend to invest in expanding the Stockholm Metro. The expansion includes nine new stations; Sofia on Södermalm is one of them. The conditions of the site make the station to one of the deepest in the world. This proposal makes use of these conditions to connect the street level and the underground platform level and give the everyday experience of space, atmosphere, light and void a central position. The proposal comprises a hundred meters deep shaft, two elevator shafts, a public square park and train platform.

Seriani, Sebastian. "Crowd management on metro station platforms." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10048479/.

Full text
Abstract:
To reduce problems of interaction at the platform train interface (PTI) crowd management measures (CMM) have been implemented in the London Underground (LU). As an example, platform edge doors (PEDs) are used as door positions indicators at the PTI. However, there is little research focused on the effect of these types of measures on the behaviour and interaction of passengers boarding and alighting. In addition, there is a lack of methods and frameworks to represent and evaluate their behaviour and interaction. A simple framework is proposed to help designers and planners to identify and benchmark the degree of interaction when CMM are used such as PEDs. This framework included a new method, in which the platform conflict area (PCA) is divided into layers of 50 cm each and 40 cm square cells. The framework is supported by observation at two existing stations (with and without PEDs) and laboratory experiments under controlled conditions at UCL’s Pedestrian Accessibility Movement Environmental Laboratory (PAMELA). A tracking tool was used to obtain the position of each passenger on the PCA. The results show that PEDs on their own have no overall negative impact on the boarding and alighting time (BAT) and that in most situations they encourage passengers to wait beside the doors. Measuring the density by layers was more representative of the interaction than average values of density. The space of alighting passengers can be represented as an asymmetrical ellipse and their speed not always increased when they have more space. In addition, if R (boarding/alighting) increases then the formation of flow lines decreases at the PTI. The new framework is able to describe well the phenomena of high interactions and can be used to evaluate suitable CMM in railway infrastructure. Possible applications of the framework, as well as further investigation, were discussed.

Abstract:
Master of Science
Department of Communications and Agricultural Education
Lauri M. Baker
Garden centers are facing increasing market pressure from big-box retail stores that offer similar products at more competitive prices but lack a quality produce and exceptional service. In order to differentiate themselves from big-box stores, garden centers must build relationships with their customers which can increase marketing reach. Marketing ability and reach is limiting the expansion of Kansas garden centers which spend the majority of their advertising dollars on traditional media. However, social media can be an effective method for not only understanding consumers but also developing profitable relationships with customers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of stakeholders of metro and non-metro garden centers as they use new media to market their business. Findings indicate garden center stakeholders prefer to use traditional media channels to market to their customers, lack a clear strategy and objectives related to new-media marketing, and are not effectively implementing relationship marketing principles.

Abstract:
Despite the large number of case studies estimating the impact of railways on property values, there is as yet no research conducted specifically for the Dubai Metro. This study applies the existing empirical methods, corrected for sources of bias, to test for the effect of the Dubai Metro on the values of residential and retail properties. The results will also be of interest to neighbouring cities developing their first railways. The existing empirical work reveals a large variation in estimates for the effect of railways on property values. This thesis provides a comprehensive meta-analysis examining the sources of variation and relating these findings to the estimates for the Dubai Metro. As an addition to the existing literature, this study examines the effect on sale and rent values using repeated cross-sectional and pseudo panel data, and makes a case for the preferred data structure. Besides applying the known measures of accessibility to a metro, this research represents the first attempt to test for the effect of the change in the generalized cost of travel (GC) due to the operations of the metro. The results from the preferred models indicate negative, insignificant and positive impacts of the metro on the sale value of dwellings located at different distances. The metro also enhances the rent value of dwellings and the sale value of retail properties. The study also finds an increase in the value of dwellings due to a decrease in the GC. The results suggest that while a reduction in the GC of public transport boosts the sale value of retail properties, values are higher in areas with higher private and public transport trip rates. The positive effect of the metro implies that a value capture mechanism can be explored, provided the related policy implications are understood.

Abstract:
This study is evaluating and improving the robustness of the metro system in Stockholm. It is based on the existing metro system and by interpreting it as a network we can represent it in a mathematical graph. Furthermore we want to examine how much we can improve the metro system robustness by adding new railway between existing stations for a certain amount of money. More mathematically speaking, which new edges should be added to the existing graph to increase the robustness, where robustness is determined using algebraic connectivity. The problem is solved with different aspects and using two different methods, Greedy perturbation heuristic and Semidefinite programming, giving us a result of which new edges that improve the robustness the most. We will evaluate if it is favorable to build new railway, given the robustness percent increase and the importance of that railway.

With technology changing fast, it is difficult for managers to determine which sources of data are relevant in the context of these technologies. This paper aims to explore opportunities to implement data-driven technologies in the Stockholm metro. The technologies are assessed based on their usefulness and feasibility. The assessment is also done in regards to the current state of the organization in charge of the Stockholm metro, Trafikförvaltningen, and its internal capabilities. The study has been conducted through interviews aimed at understanding Trafikförvaltningen as an organization, as well as literary reviews of state-of-the-art technologies aimed at understanding what is technically possible. By aligning the state of the organization with current technologies, it was concluded that big data for preventive maintenance and smart grids for minimizing energy consumption were the most relevant data-driven technologies to implement.

Abstract:
The present research aims to translate the lyrical passages of three Sophoclean tragedies, Trachiniae, Aias, Antigone, and analyze them in terms of the elements of genre found therein and of the strophes and meters that make up its structure. In the introductory part of the work, the chronology of the selected plays and the form and content features they have in common are discussed so as to demonstrate that, if they do not constitute a first group of tragedies, as some authors claim, they should at least be placed among the oldest extant plays by Sophocles. The first chapter of the first part of the dissertation provides a comparison between the meter and the types of strophic structure employed in the poems under consideration and those present in the compositions of non-dramatic lyric poets. The second chapter is divided into five sections, each with a poem taken as a case study concerning a particular genre and its relationship with the poem chosen: (i) the parodos of Trachiniae (hymns and prayers of the Greek tradition); (ii) the monostrophic song (205-24) of the same play (dithyramb, paian and wedding-song [hymenaios, epithalamios]); (iii) the first stasimon also of this tragedy (epinician odes); (iv) its second stasimon (welcome-song [prosphonetikon]), (v) and the first Antigones kommos (806-82) (dirge [threnos]). The translations of the selected passages, prefaced by a note regarding their criteria, form the second part of the dissertation, which then ends with concluding remarks that seek to give greater unity to the work, relating not only the two chapters of the first part, but also the poems not treated specifically in those five sections of the first part with the themes that were elaborated there during the research. As an appendix to this work there is a scansion of all translated poems and a glossary with all meters found in the poems, their classification and abbreviation.

Abstract:
Station buildings are the most significant components of metro systems that combine underground facilities to the outer world, and include public life in itself. Thus, it is the main objective of that research, to put forward an acknowledgement documentation, which identifies the main design and construction problems of existing and under construction metro station buildings&trade
entrances, and which comes up with solutions to these problems. In the scope of thesis, foremost, basic terminology about station buildings are given and historical development of these buildings in abroad and Turkey are explained briefly. Then, observed problems of metro station entrances are put forward in detail. These problems are mainly categorized as design, construction, material and application related problems. Design part is investigated under following sub-titles: Psychological effects, lighting conditions, space requirements, relationship with city, navigation and disabled accessibility of stations. The affect of recent construction techniques and technological developments on design are also explained. Lastly, material choice and application related problems are investigated through such components of station as wall, floor, ceiling and details. All these problems are assessed by making comparisons with examples both from abroad and from Turkey. Finally, it is comprehended that, because of having weak connections to outer world, the entrances of the stations have adequate contributions neither to the station nor to the city. Assessment of building performance is made under the light of predefined problems and proposals are made in order to be used in design studies to get station entrances free from those problems.

Abstract:
Americans are going through a radical change in how they build cities. Urban areas across the nation are growing with multiple cores called "Edge Cities." These new centers do not look like our old city downtowns where buildings stood side by side, but rather their low broad outlines dot the landscape like cattle along a forged trail. These office towers, frequently guarded by trees and moats of asphalt peer at each other from respectful distances through reflected bands of glass. On the fringe of the modern city, these displaced spores sprout without relationship to any existing organization, other than the serpentine ribbon of looping, sprawling highways. The formation of spaces rather than the formation of objects is a strategy I explore in the "Eisenhower Metro Center" to combat today's urban sprawl. Architect Steven Holl suggests, "The expanded boundary of the contemporary city calls for the synthesis of new spatial compositions. An intensified urban realm could be a coherent mediator between the extremes of the metropolis and the agrarian plain." Within the scope of my thesis project I hope to define a new synthesis of urban life and urban form. Program, quality of light, and movement will become form generators of this new "Urban Edge".
Master of Architecture

Abstract:
The theoretical structure of the study is composed of understanding the life cycle of metro system classified in three evolutionary phases. These process definitions respectively start with demand related to metro, continue with the acceptance of metro as the preferential alternative by inhabitants and end with the subway that embedded as an important reason that build city identity. Phases will be studied through its motives and will be analyzed through physical design considerations. The reason of the prevision is stemmed from the hypothetical approach which is stated as the influences of the design considerations of metro utilities are highly related on its life cycle and in forming local identity. The test of the hypothesis will be handled in two methods. The first will be a survey study which will include checklist to portraiture demand and course of the system in first two stages. At the preliminary stage, the topics of underground, underground use and the history of railway and urban railway network in world and Turkey are discussed to get a better and more comprehensive understanding of metro. Next method is designed to cross-examine design considerations and local identity by value judgment analysis for the last stage. In this phase, validity of the hypothesis will be audited by correspondence analysis. Value judgments depended assertion and expression of values which reached by correspondence analysis and Bertin Graphs, are accepted as the determinations that addresses the relationship between physical structure and local identity. The evaluation of the metro&rsquo
s physical qualifications during its life cycle, which can be noted under several headings and the relationship between the physical aspects and those of the local characteristics, are proposed to be put forth as contributions by this thesis.

Abstract:
Increasing food insecurity, lack of sustainable food systems, and a desire to participate in the food system are prompting the growth of various forms of urban agriculture: community gardens, urban homesteads, and urban farms. Urban farms, as distinct from other urban agriculture projects, are defined by the sale of their product. They raise produce and grow ornamentals to sell in neighbourhoods, all while building urban food networks that connect communities to their food. Resilient localized food production systems must be economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable to succeed in a changing environment. Research on urban agriculture has largely focused on community gardens and their social benefits, leaving little known about entrepreneurial urban farms. This study examines the business models and economics of Metro Vancouver’s urban farms through a newly developed tool, the ‘Urban Farming Census.’ The use of this semi-structured interview tool revealed revenues, costs, financing, and sales models of urban farmers as well as their community connections and benefits. The Urban Farming Census was applied during the 2010 and 2011 growing seasons, capturing the first attempts by Vancouver’s urban farming organizations growing sustainable businesses. In 2010, eight urban farms produced $128,000 worth of produce on 2.31 acres, supporting 17 paid employees. In 2011, ten urban farms sold $170,000 worth of produce on 4.19 acres, supporting 30 paid employees. Urban farms do more than sell produce; they educate their communities about food production and provide space for individuals and communities to explore their intergenerational, multicultural food cultures.

Research question: How should cosmetic companies develop marketing strategies for beauty products to appeal to men as a customers? Purpose:The purpose of this paper is to explore how marketing strategies of beauty products aimed for men should be designed in order to appeal to potential and existing male customers. Furthermore the paper aims to identify strategic proposals that cosmetic companies should apply in creating marketing for men. Method:The case study is based on a qualitative research method with an inductive approach in which the data collected is done through semi-structured interviews and observations. Results: The results show that cosmetics companies should make use of marketing specifically intended for men to appeal as a consumer group. Furthermore, companies should adapt their marketing communications to coincide with men's preferences, interests and characteristics as well as to use market channels for highlighting product ranges intended for men. Limitations: The study of cosmetic companies presents itself on a national level, which means that the conclusion is aimed for the Swedish market and Swedish men. Theoretical and practical contributions: The theoretical contribution of this paper is to overlap the gaps identified in the literature between company and consumer. In order to do so, there must exist a correlation between the marketing mix, segmentation, positioning and target marketing. The practical contributions of this paper is to provide cosmetic companies with proposals of how they should adapt their marketing strategies to appeal to men as a consumer group on the Swedish market.

Abstract:
Since the population growth of Stockholm Region is rapid, leading to larger demand on Public Transport and especially metro, four Municipalities of the Region have agreed on the expansion of the metro network. Blue metro line will be extended to Nacka and Hagsatra in the south and Barkarby in the north of the Swedish capital. The new railway line connections have been already planned, while the operation of the expanded line is analyzed in the current thesis. Taking the expected increase of passenger volumes and the operation of the current Blue line into account and following the safety restrictions, two alternative regular timetables of the expanded Blue line, limited to the morning rush service on a working weekday, have been constructed. The operation at stations of low expected passenger volume on the train is evaluated concerning the satisfaction of the operator. The rst alternative metro operation with trac every 4 minutes during the rush hour is concluded to be less ecient than the second alternative with 5 minutes headway, as 21 % larger amount of rolling stock is needed and more seats are not occupied. Finally, in order to achieve higher operational eciency at the low-demanded stations, a third Blue line operation, that is based on the second alternative and it includes short services, operating on a part of the line and not on the full-length of it, has been proposed. Although the number of trains needed for the morning peak hour operation remains constant between the second and third alternative operations, the proportion of empty seats at the analyzed stations is expected to be lower during the last alternative operation, resulting in a metro line scheduling that satises the operator most.

Abstract:
This study proposes a security/surveillance system capable of automatically recognizing and detecting screams and shouts in a metro, based on the theory of classification through statistical modeling. Using a database recorded from enactments of violent scenes inside a Paris metro running its course, we estimated statistical models from three different neural network architectures (DNN, CNN and RNN/LSTM). The models were first trained to recognize three categories of sounds (shouts, speech and background noise), then introducing more categories to describe the surrounding environment (in order to bring some contextual information), considering the data as isolated sound events or as a continuous audio stream. The results obtained speak to the higher modeling power of the temporal model which takes into account the temporal structure of sound events. The scores for the Classification of the three categories shout, speech and background turned out to be quite satisfying, regardless of the rest of the acoustic environment, and adding contextual information proved useful. During this study we observed that the lack of data is a major limiting factor, which could be circumvented by using transfer learning, which consists in using more complex networks pre-trained with different data, as well as data augmentation techniques, consisting in increasing the amount of data by creating synthetic data from existing ones

Thomas, John Heulyn. "Managing a metro rail project to avoid cost overruns." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2009. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/195599/.

Full text
Abstract:
While technical failures remain the most common triggers for overruns in metro projects, the causes have not typically been deficiencies in the underlying engineering principles but in project management. This work involves the complementary use of requirements and risk management processes and real options theory. The Crossrail project provides a case study with a scheme design for an underground station at Farringdon being considered in detail. The requirements process documented in this research is capable of providing an interactive format for managing project requirements and importantly, any changes that are made to them. This is achieved using commercial software (Telelogic DOORS®) and it is shown that this process is effective when working on multidisciplinary metro projects. This process is then expanded to consider the interaction between risks on a project. This is identified as being crucial given the impacts that technical, project and external risks can have on each other. The developed risk process therefore allows the interactions between all risks to be recorded and provides a holistic view of all risks for management purposes. The requirements and risk processes are complemented by a fuzzy logic methodology to evaluate global and elemental risks (such as political or client risks). Over 50 external risk factors which are known to have caused overruns on previous projects are identified and the performance of Crossrail is evaluated against each risk factor by way of a questionnaire circulated to industry professionals. An approach to avoiding cost overruns is demonstrated by the application of real options theory where the chosen design for Farringdon station is developed alongside an alternative design. Real options theory is used to value the cost of implementing the design alternative should it be needed during the project construction cycle due to cost increases and the potential occurrence of major risks. This implementation cost is presented as a fixed cost agreed prior to construction rather than being an added cost to the agreed budget once construction has started. It is proposed that using real options in this context can avoid significant cost overruns by predetermining the value of payments to be made for changing from one design to another. This thesis will show how additions and adjustments to existing processes and the inclusion of real options valuation in the procurement of metro projects can help practitioners avoid cost overruns in a metro rail project.

Merchants and tradesmen are commonly viewed as important characters of public spaces. Is this thrue for the case of the underground on its way of becoming a public space? for a long time this space was nothing but a purely functional traffic area. This situation has incurred a major change with the technical and social mutations of the seventies. The underground is now thought in terms of crisis and vulnerability. Though many actors are involved in the metropolitan space, the part of tradesmen deserves special attention. The introduction of tradesmen transforms the metropolitan space in many ways depending on their activity (type of products, supply circuits), ethnic origine (chineses, north africans, indians) and relationships with other actors (between each other and with ratp's agents and public). The metropolitan space appears to be stake of a conflict between the objectives of public service and the transformations induced by the tradesmen. This study tries to explain the underground space publicisation both from a poligical and commercial point of view

Enyeribe, Iwuh Ibezimako Augustus. "Maternal near miss audit in Metro West Maternity services." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/16525.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references
Background: A near miss occurs when a pregnant woman experiences a severe life threatening complication during pregnancy or up to 42 days after the end of the pregnancy and survives. The near miss rate is defined as the number of near misses per 1000 live births. In 2011, World Health Organization (WHO) produced a useful tool for identifying near misses according to composite criteria which include the occurrence of a severe maternal complication together with organ dysfunction and/or specified critical interventions. The ratio of maternal near miss cases to maternal deaths and the mortality index both reflect the quality of care provided in a maternity service Maternal deaths have been audited in the Metro West maternity service for many years but there has been no routine monitoring or evaluation of maternal near misses. Aim of study: The study aim was to perform a near miss audit in Metro West, specifically (a) measuring the near miss rate, the maternal mortality ratio and the mortality index, (b) performing an in-depth investigation of the associated demographic, clinical and health system factors of the near miss cases, and (c) providing input into the development of an on -going system of auditing near misses cases in Metro West. Methods: A retrospective observational study conducted over 6 months between mid- March 2014 to mid -September 2014. This service includes 9 level one maternity facilities which refer all complicated maternal cases to two secondary hospitals, New Somerset (NSH) and Mowbray Maternity (MMH); or to the tertiary hospital, Groote Schuur Maternity Center (GSH). All cases of near miss managed at the three hospitals were identified weekly by the author with the assistance of onsite health providers. These cases included near misses that occurred at level one facilities and were referred on to one or more of the three hospitals. Strict criteria were used to ascertain a case as a near miss according to the WHO near miss definitions. The folders of all the near misses were reviewed and relevant data entered into a data collection form which was adapted from the WHO near miss data form. In addition, these identified folders were reviewed by two senior obstetric specialists to confirm adherence to the WHO inclusion criteria for near miss classification, and also to determine avoidable factors in the management of the near miss cases. Maternal deaths occurring during the same time period of the Near Miss audit were identified from monthly mortality meetings and the ongoing maternal mortality audit system in Metro West. Results: 112 near miss cases and 13 maternal deaths were identified, giving a total of 125 women with severe maternal outcomes. There were a total of 19,222 live births in Metro West facilities. The Maternal mortality ratio (M MR) was 67.6 per 100,000 live births and the maternal near miss rate was 5.83 per 1000 live births. The maternal near miss to death ratio was 8.6:1 and the mortality index was 10.4% Hypertension, obstetric hemorrhage and pregnancy related sepsis were the major causes of the near miss cases accounting for 50(44.6%), 38(33.9%), and 13 (11.6%) of near misses respectively. These three conditions all had low mortality indices; 1.9%, 1.9% and 0 for hypertension, pregnancy related sepsis and hemorrhage respectively. Less common conditions were, medical /surgical conditions, non-pregnancy related infections and acute collapse, accounting for 7 (6.3%), 2 (1.8%), and 2 (1.8%) of near misses respectively. Although these numbers were small, these three conditions accounted for more maternal deaths with mortality indices of 66.7 %, 33.3% and 33.3% for non- pregnancy related infections, medical /surgical conditions, and acute collapse respectively. There were 25 (22.3%) of the near miss cases who were HIV positive. The majority of near misses 99(88.4%) had antenatal care. Analysis of avoidable factors showed that, the most common problems were lack of antenatal clinic attendance (11.6%) and inter-facility transport problems (6.3%). For health provider related avoidable factors, the highest number of avoidable factors were identified at level 2 (38.2%), followed by level one (25.9%) and level 3 (7.1%). The most common factors were problem recognition, monitoring and substandard care Discussion and Conclusions: The near miss rates and maternal mortality ratio in Metro West were lower than for some other developing countries, but higher than rates in high income countries. The mortality index was low for direct obstetric conditions such as hypertensive disorders, obstetric hemorrhage and pregnancy related sepsis, reflecting good quality of care and referral mechanisms for these conditions. The mortality indices for non-pregnancy related infections, medical/surgical conditions and acute collapse were much higher and, suggest that medical problems may need more focused attention. Ongoing near miss audit would be valuable for Metro West but would require identification and monitoring systems to be institutionalized.

Abstract:
Now a days, the society thinks about more sustainable and clean energy sources. Most of the countries in the world relay on non-renewable energy sources for the generation of electricity. This results in the scarcity of fossil fuels in future and also increases the production of carbon emissions. This thesis considers a metro system named Kochi Metro which is a rapid transit system serving in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India which uses renewable sources, mainly solar, for giving power to the Metro. In this thesis work, trying to analyze the measures adopted by Kochi Metro Rail project in potential reductions of energy consumption and energy generation both contributing to energy efficiency. With the help of Matlab, different levels of installed PV power are used to find out the possible self-usage, self-sufficiency, and energy neutrality of the system.

Manuel, Joslyn. "Change, restructuring and transformation of Metro District Health Service." Thesis, University of the Western Cape, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4505.

Abstract:
Magister Psychologiae - MPsych
The phenomenon of change has been the subject of debate for decades. Whether the change was planned or as the result of a catastrophic event, change affects nations, people, businesses, the economy and the environment. Typical changes in businesses are mergers, restructuring, transformations and retrenchments. Consequently, to this contentious phenomenon, change has been the subject of research by social scientists, behavioural theorists and analysts. Their collective endeavours have provided the world with a wealth of scientific knowledge. The Metro District Health Services in the Western Cape have undergone major restructuring and transformation. It is with this premise the question is posed, are change agents, leaders, and employees sufficiently empowered to mitigate the challenges and appease the expectations associated with restructuring, transformation and change?Supporting and contextualizing the study to the existing body of knowledge, previous research is reflected upon in an attempt to add value to future change initiatives. The reflections include different perspectives of change management, the multifaceted and evolutionary nature of change. The theoretical framework underpinnings of organisational development and transformation were also explored. One point of departure was to establish what is needed to ensure organisational success and describes activities, action plans and strategies, which modifies the organisational structures. The suggested methodologies, dimensions, variables influencing or enabling transformation formed the baseline for this study, with the emphasis placed on models of change, communication, theories of success formulae for organisational change, competencies of change agents, behaviour and attitudes of all stakeholders. Circumventing the purpose and contextualizing the baseline for this research, the survivor syndrome was explored and the dimensions of different change elements offered value to this study. The intent of the restructuring and transformation initiative, was to strengthen the Metro District Health Services by decentralizing Primary Health Care Services. Selected employees were tasked as change agents to facilitate the process and were simultaneously directly impacted by the process. The objective of this study is to explore and understand the effects of change on selected employees functioning at different levels within the Metro District Health Services during restructuring and transformation of the provisioning of healthcare services. In determining the effects the variables explored were their attitude towards change, their commitment to the organisation, the barriers and challenges encountered with the implementation of the process. The selected participants were part of an intensive restructuring and transformation process. The sample chosen from the population of 350 employees at the regional office of the Metro District Health Service and was representative of the greater population. The sample includes selected managers and employees at different hierarchal levels ranging from salary levels five to fourteen. Ensuring representativeness the different departments were used as strata and within each department a random sampling method was used to select respondents. Support was provided to explain that stratified sampling is a procedure of selecting a probability sample where a heterogeneous population is first divided into subgroups (known as strata) on the sampling frame, and simple random samples are drawn from each stratum. The research methodology was a combination of qualitative and quantitative research design. A questionnaire was distributed consisting of three sections, Section A Biographical Information, Section B Structured Interview (10 participants), Senior Managers were approached to conduct the structured face to face interviews asking open ended questions and Section C Survey Questionnaire was completed by the rest of the sample group by indicating on a likert scale their agreement or disagreement with the statements. The questionnaires have been demonstrated to be psychometrically sound in that their reliability and validity have been reported on and supported in previous studies. The analysis of the raw data involved statistical computations using Statistical Package for Social Science called Moonstats© and Thematic Content Analysis for the interpretation of the qualitative data. The limitations of the study are discussed as well as recommendations for future change initiatives and future research projects on the subject.
