My article explores the images and metaphors relating to space in Fritz Lang’s 1926 film, Metropolis (remade in 1984 by Georgio Moroder). Using a primarily Marxist interpretive framework, I analyse the spatial layout of the filmic city of Metropolis, divided into three levels, one above ground and two underground, as metonymic of the class divisions in the urban society that are represented in the film. The article also examines the architecture of Metropolis as representing social values and conflicts. It then proceeds to investigate the film’s gender dynamics as revealed in the two figures o

In this work we study the non-equilibrium properties of Heisenberg ferromagnetic films using Monte Carlo simulations by short-time dynamic method. By exploring the short-time scaling dynamics, we have found thickness dependency of critical exponents z, θ′ and β/v for ferromagnetic thin film. For calculating the critical exponents of ferromagnetic films we considered systems with linear size L = 128 and layers number N = 2; 4; 6; 10. Starting from initial configurations, the system was updated with Metropolis algorithm at the critical temperatures

Since 1927, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis has circulated as stills, clips, and a sequence of increasingly more complete cuts in the global social imaginary. Whilst scholars have critiqued this science fiction film from gender, techno-culture, and German socio-political perspectives, this article analyzes the film afresh by reading it ecocritically. The article moves through three key components of Metropolis. The first movement examines the representational and ideological contradictions within the variety of machines inside the diegetic city to deconstruct the common interpretation of the film’s ma

This commentary documents the compositional process of writing film music for the classic expressionist silent film Metropolis (Lang, 1927), using MIDI-based orchestral sound resources. Metropolis was chosen from within other possibilities, such as Battleship Potemkin or Nosferatu, not only due to the belief that the film’s surreal eerie mood and machine-like characters could be represented well by the Second Viennese School’s musical style that I intended to adopt, but also due to a judgment that leitmotivic transformation and use of themes as character links fit into a work so rich with char

For some time now the realm of film studies has been profoundly shaped by two separate but overlapping tendencies. On the one hand, a "spatial turn," or concern with social geography, which has been particularly attracted to cinema's complex relationship with urban space. On the other, a concern with cinema's origins, its early history, and its relationship with a complex of forces, many of them emphatically urban, that has come to be known as "modernity." A travers une analyse des ecrits theoriques et esthetiques sur le cinema publies a cette epoque on peut alors reconsiderer la notion d'expressionnisme cinematographique qui ne se definirait plus par rapport a l'expressionnisme dans les autres ar

This essay examines how ideology is presented and represented in the science fiction films Metropolis and Snowpiercer. Special effects not only shaped the look of iconic films like Nosferatu (1922) or Metropolis (1927), but they are central to a comprehensive understanding of German silent film culture writ large. Indirect sensing uses sparse array of sensors and complex algorithms to determine the extent and localization of damage. Crack initiation can best be captured with direct sensing as it provides resolved information about the anomalous behavior near cracks. Direct sensing, however, is expensive because of the need to install a large array of densely packed sensors. A novel solution developed recently is the use of two-dimension
