Abstract:
Abstract In 1940, Wolfgang Metzger began a profound reflection on the meaning of the phenomenological approach to Gestalt psychology, which had its starting point in the rejection of what he called the “Eleatic” or “Eleatic–Rationalistic Postulate,” that is, the notion that, in his opinion, had dominated Western scientific and philosophical thought of the past centuries, according to which any assertion about the state of things that could lead to self-contradictory conclusions had to be considered unfounded. On the basis of this rejection and with exclusive reference to access to experiential data, Metzger proposed to distinguish five meanings of reality: (1) the physical or experiential world; (2) the intuitive or experienced world; (3) the experienced world (met, Angetroffen) in contrast to the represented world; (4) the something or fullness in contrast to emptiness or nothingness; (5) the real in contrast to the apparent. For Metzger (1950), this concept, although primarily related to perception, has far-reaching implications for our conception of others and of society. We question here the validity of Metzger’s concept, its explanatory significance, and its relation to other phenomenological concepts, such as that of Merleau-Ponty.

Abstract:
Abstract Natural structures have been analyzed and investigated over many years for impulses and benefits that could possibly be applied to man-made technical structures. With today’s possibilities of computer-aided calculations, methods have been developed to improve the primitive research into nature by providing scientists with the tool of simulation for much preciser statements about the phenomena observed in the open. K. Metzger, a German forester and author, reported on the existence of an even stress distribution in biological structures as early as 1893 (Metzger, 1893). For stems of spruce he observed that there is a definite relationship between the growth of stems and the mechanical loads which act on them. Metzger’s experience was adopted by a team of scientists at Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH. His observations have been providing the basis of extensive computerized simulations assisted by the finite-element method (FEM). Some of these calculations are discussed in this paper to prove and corroborate the theses given below.

Abstract:
Numerical simulations of the flow field and heat transfer of squealer blade tip are performed in this study. The effect of Reynolds number (Re = 10000–40000), the clearance gap to width ratios (C/W = 5%–15%) and the cavity depth to width ratios (D/W = 10%, 20% and 50%) on fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are obtained. The temperature and velocity distributions inside the cavity, the local heat transfer coefficients, and the average Nusselt numbers for the pressure and suction sides of the turbine blade tip are determined. This paper presents the results of the effects of Reynolds number, clearance gap and width ratios on the Nusslet number for the pressure and suction sides of squealer turbine blade tip. The results show a good agreement with the experimental data obtained by Metzger and Bunker. New correlations for the average Nusselt numbers for turbine blade tip pressure and suction sides are presented.

Abstract:
The clearance gap between the stationary outer air seal and blade tips of an axial turbine allows a clearance gap leakage flow to be driven through the gap by the pressure-to-suction side pressure difference. The presence of strong secondary flows on the pressure side of the airfoil tends to deliver air from the hottest regions of the mainstream to the clearance gap. The blade tip region, particularly near the trailing edge, is very difficult to cool adequately with blade internal coolant flow. In this case, film cooling injection directly onto the blade tip region can be used in an attempt to directly reduce the heat transfer rates from the hot gases in the clearance gap to the blade tip. The present paper is intended as a memorial tribute to the late Professor Darryl E. Metzger who has made significant contributions in this particular area over the past decade. A summary of this work is made to present the results of his more recent experimental work that has been performed to investigate the effects of film coolant injection on convection heat transfer to the turbine blade tip for a variety of tip shapes and coolant injection configurations. Experiments are conducted with blade tip models that are stationary relative to the simulated outer air seal based on the result of earlier works that found the leakage flow to be mainly a pressure-driven flow which is related strongly to the airfoil pressure loading distribution and only weakly, if at all, to the relative motion between blade tip and shroud. Both heat transfer and film effectiveness are measured locally over the test surface using a transient thermal liquid crystal test technique with a computer vision data acquisition and reduction system for various combinations of clearance heights, clearance flow Reynolds numbers, and film flow rates with different coolant injection configurations. The present results reveal a strong dependency of film cooling performance on the choice of the coolant supply hole shapes and injection locations for a given tip geometry.

Full text
Abstract:
Heat transfer experiments were conducted with three (3) different target plate configurations: a baseline copper flat smooth plate, a copper plate model with copper pins and a copper plate model with Teflon pins, to determine average heat transfer coefficients on the flat and pin surfaces for application with different plate materials. For each target plate surface configuration, the heat transfer experiments were conducted with selected impingement orifice plate configurations and with selected spacing between the orifice plate and the heat transfer target plate. The heat transfer results for the baseline copper smooth flat plate were in good agreement with a well-recognized correlation for the flow regions used in the correlation. An analytical procedure, similar to that used by Metzger et al. for pin-fins in coolant channels, was developed to separate the average heat transfer coefficients on the flat and pin surfaces. The results with the copper pins showed modest increases of approximately 35 percent in heat transfer at lower Reynolds numbers, decreasing with increased Reynolds number. Application of the experimental results to an analysis for high-pressure engine conditions with modest thermal conductivity materials showed that the overall heat transfer coefficient can decrease with pin surfaces for some conditions, compared to flat plates.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents experimental measurements and CFD calculations for heat transfer and flow friction factor in a staggered pin fin array. The heat transfer and flow friction factor data are taken in a constant temperature facility and are acquired over a Reynolds number range of 1500 to 31,000. The array is comprised of eight rows of pins spaced at 2.5 diameters in the streamwise and spanwise directions with a pin height of two diameters. The heat transfer data are presented in terms of both average array data and row resolved data. The data accurately match the recent pin fin correlation of Chyu et at. [1] and extend its range to lower Reynolds numbers. The flow friction factor data accurately match the low and high Reynolds number data of Metzger et al. [2]. The steady state computations for a 2D and 3D representation of the geometry are performed and compared with archival correlations and the present data. The calculations are performed using a general purpose commercial solver (FLUENT 5.3 [3]) and apply the realizable k-ε model of Shih et al. [4] along with a two layer model which solves the k equation in the near wall region. Generally, the calculations perform relatively well with the 2D calculations matching the literature correlations slightly better than the 3D calculations.

Abstract:
Impingement cooling offers very high heat transfer coefficients. Flow field, involved in impingement cooling is dominated by stagnation zone, transition zone and developing zone. Understanding of complex flow phenomenon and its effects on heat transfer characteristics is useful for efficient designing of impingement channels. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged as a powerful tool for the analysis of flow and heat transfer systems. Honeywell has been investigating the use of CFD to determine the characteristics of various complex turbine blade cooling heat transfer augmentation methods such as impingement. The objective of this study is to develop CFD methodology which is suitable for computational investigation of flow and heat transfer analysis of impingement cooling through validation. Single row of circular jets impinging on concave (curved) surface has been considered for this study. The validation was accomplished with the test results of Bunker and Metzger [10] and with the correlations of Chupp et al. [7]. The parameters which are varied in this study include jet Reynolds number (Re2B = 6750–10200), target plate distance to jet diameter ratio (Z/d = 3 and 4), and target surface sharpness (i.e. radius ratio, r* = 0.2, 0.4 and 1) the simulations are performed under steady state conditions. Predicted results are compared for local endwall heat transfer results along the curve length of the mid span target wall. Flow field results obtained at different locations are presented to understand the heat transfer behavior.

Abstract:
The results of an experimental investigation aimed to study both the rheological and fluid dynamic behaviour of two kinds of fruit purees at different pulp concentrations are presented in this work. An experimental setup based on the rectilinear pipe viscometer principle was used for a preliminary rheological investigation of the analyzed products. By applying either the classical Rabinowitsch and Mooney or the recent Thikonov method of regularization of integral equations, these products could reliably be considered as purely-viscous time-independent fluids. The laminar motion was described by means of the well known Metzner and Reed method while the corresponding resistance laws for turbulent motion were modeled by using the Dodge and Metzner method. The comparison of the point onset of turbulence against the ones obtained by means of the Mishra and Thripati and Hanks formulas would, however, suggest that in transitional regime the viscoelastic effects could have non-negligible influence on the dynamics.
