Abstract:
Even though none of the recent reference works on Holocaust literature mentions the Mexican output on this topic, there exists a substantial tradition of literary works in Mexico that address the Holocaust. This essay offers a survey of this tradition, with a focus on how the authors of these works relate the Holocaust to the Mexican context from which they are writing. I argue that most of the Mexican authors I study treat the Holocaust as part of a shared history, rather than a history towards which they adopt an outsider’s perspective.

Abstract:
I Have Been Teaching Literatures in English for Over Twenty-Five Years at the Universidad Nacional AutóNoma de México (Unam), Mexico's national university, where I received my undergraduate degree. My formative years were marked, undoubtedly, by the universalist ideal that defines the motto of the university, “Por mi raza hablará el espíritu” (“The spirit will speak on behalf of my race”). I cannot recall whether I was aware of the motto's real meaning, or of its cultural and social implications, but I suppose I took for granted that what I was taught as a student was as much part of a Mexican culture as it was of a “universal” one. Reading English literature at the department of modern languages and literatures in the late 1970s meant that I was exposed to a canonical view of literature shaped as much by The Oxford Anthology of English Literature and by our lecturers' (primarily) aesthetic approach to it as by the idea of “universal” literature conveyed in the textbooks for elementary and secondary education in Mexico. This conviction that as a Mexican I belonged to “Western” civilization greatly diminished when in the early 1980s I traveled to London for graduate studies and was almost shattered by the attitudes I encountered while conducting my doctoral research on the image of Latin America in British fiction. I was often asked whether I had ever seen a car (let alone ridden in one), or if there was electricity in my country, and the ambivalent, mostly negative, view of Latin Americans and Mexicans in what I read (authors like Joseph Conrad, D. H. Lawrence, Graham Greene, and Aldous Huxley, as well as more than three hundred adventure novels set in the continent) forced me to question the idea that one ought to read literature merely for the enjoyment (and admiration) of it or to analyze it with assumptions that fall roughly in the category of “expressive,” or “mimetic,” criticism, which was common in those days and often took the form of monographic studies, which relied heavily on paraphrase.

Abstract:
The article wants to give an account of the reason for the prodigal son in Mexican literature of the Decade of the twenties of the last century. The character of the parable from his appearance was relegating another traveller who had aroused interest and curiosity in the early years of that decade, Ulysses, of resonance vasconcelistas. The complexity of the prodigal explains the seduction that operated on young Mexican poets, in particular, Xavier Villaurrutia, Gilbeto Owen and Salvador Novo.

Orientador: Antônio Roberto Esteves
Banca: Livia Maria de Freitas Reis Teixeira
Banca: Fernanda Aparecida Ribeiro
Banca: Cleide Antonia Rapucci
Abstract: The present work consists of a comparative reading of the Mexican novels Pedro Páramo (1955), by Juan Rulfo (1917-1986), and Like water for chocolate (1989), by Laura Esquivel (1950-), starting from the ascertainment that these narratives are situated at the time of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1940), one of the most complex and important social movements of the Latin America history. In Pedro Páramo, the character that names the novel after himself is a chieftain who dominates an entire region at the expense of much violence. His death corresponds to the collapse of a social structure to which there was no place in the country that was arising with the Revolution. In Like water for chocolate, impelled by the desire of breaking with an emasculating familiar tradition that forced her to remain unmarried to take care of her mother, the female protagonist undertakes a trajectory of struggle against the submission and the silence imposed on the women by the patriarchal society. Her struggle is successful, symbolizing the women's movement for the conquest of a larger space for social actuation and emission of their voices. In our reading we dedicated special attention to the outline of the female figure and the rich symbology evoked by recurrent elements in the narratives, the exploration of those seems to us to be of great importance in the conformation of the authors' point of view. In short, our objective is to examine some points of approach and contrast between the selected novels in order to reflect on the specificities of the reading that each one of them shows about the Mexico that emerges from their pages. As the result of the analysis, in broad outline it is possible to ascertain that Juan Rulfo portrays a more universalizing and pessimistic point view and Laura Esquivel, a particularizing and optimistic view
Doutor

Our research is based on the correlation between space and focus and how the space is related to the structure of the text. We take into consideration the critical aproaches presented by Luis A. Brandão, Ozíris B. Filho among others who have studies based on topoanalysis. The story is told from the perspective of multiple narrators who have died, changing the settings of time and space that rules the novel, making it very atypical. These characteristics are strongly linked to the peculiar structure of the narrative and the behavior of the characters and narrators who offers a post mortem angle of their stories. Due to the breaking of barriers separating life and death, the characters move through several layers of time and space, doomed to pay his penalties indefinitely on Comala, the ghost town where the story is set.

Orientador: Guacira Marcondes Machado Leite
Banca: Silvia Adoue
Parra, Lazcano Lourdes. "Transcultural performativities : travel literature by Mexican women writers." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21346/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines travel literature by Mexican women in relation to transcultural performativities, which refers to a feminist critique of how writers capture their normative performativity and their agency as they interact with different cultural contexts. My analysis considers texts from the end of the nineteenth century, taking into consideration the first Mexican women who published travel literature, through to contemporary writers from the early twenty-first century. The major focus of this thesis will be to show how Mexican women writers repeat political and poetic performativities in their literature, based on their trips to foreign places. This thesis is composed of four parts: a theoretical analysis of transcultural performativities and three close, comparative readings of travel writing and the context of their production. In the first chapter, I propose a conceptual model named transcultural performativities to analyse travel literature. This model takes into consideration the contributions of Judith Butler, Fernando Ortiz, Walter Mignolo, Julio Ortega, Eyda Merediz, Nina Gerassi-Navarro, Gloria Anzaldúa, Homi Bhabha and Édouard Glissant. This analytical model has a tripartite structure: occidental Atlanticism, post-occidental border thinking, and the Philosophy of Relation in worldliness (globalisation). The second chapter is a comparative analysis of the works of Laura Méndez de Cuenca and Elena Garro to exemplify the Atlanticist relations among Europe, the United States, Latin America and, in particular Mexico. The third chapter examines the works of Rosario Castellanos and María Luisa Puga to grasp the cultural negotiations of the intermediate social experience between Mexico and other foreign countries. The final chapter explores the works of Esther Seligson and Myriam Moscona to analyse the positionality of Mexican Jews in relation to World Literatures. Overall, this thesis suggests that we can understand the complexities of the fluidity and non-fixity of subjectivity in Mexican women’s travel writing by dwelling on the constantly changing nature of sex/gender, social classes, racialization, nationalism, and religiosity.

Abstract:
A PV/T hybrid system is able to simultaneously produce electricity and heat from solar radiation. The feasibility of implementing PV/T systems depends primarily on climatic and economic characteristics of locations where are planned to be placed. Particularly in Mexico, there are only a few studies in the scientific literature which report the feasibility of using such innovative systems. Therefore, in this work the development of a techno-economic study is presented aiming to predict the performance and feasibility of implementation of this type of hybrid systems. Firstly, a PV/T system was designed to partially cover the needs of electricity and hot sanitary water in the domestic sector (considering a house of four inhabitants). Then, PV/T hybrid system operation was simulated using TRNSYS software over a full year using data from a typical meteorological year (TMY) of Morelia city (Michoacan State). Finally, an economic analysis was conducted, estimating the inherent cash flows and computing some economic indicators to determine the feasibility of implementation of PV/T system adapted to Mexican economic conditions. The simulation results show that the proposed system consisting of 1.55 m2 of collection area, will annually produce 1480.95 kWh and 393.57 kWh of thermal and electrical energy, respectively. The system is able to meet up to 51.2% of thermal energy and 29.2% of the electricity needed. The system reaches a total efficiency of 57.48%. The results of economic analysis indicate that in optimistic case, the proposed system has a simple payback period of 6.62 years, a net present value of $2129.0 Mexican pesos, and an internal rate of return of 14%, showing economic feasibility. The results show the great potential of the use of the hybrid PV/T systems for domestic water heating and electric production at particular locations in Mexico.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Mexican government due to the need of developing and creating cutting-edge technology for application of renewable energy has created renewable energy centers to develop research projects related to solar, wind and geothermal energy. In particular, geothermal energy has been of great interest due to high geothermal energy potential reported for the country. Regarding the projects approved by the Mexican government, the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, has been granted with fundings to carry out the design and implementation of a geothermal-solar hybrid plant for electricity production. This project is being developed in the community of San Nicolás Simirao (Michoacan State) where geothermal energy is available and exploited from an existing geothermal well. Initially, the well ran through induction, but fluid flow was not constant for long periods and was not sufficient to obtain a full operation of the geothermal-solar hybrid power plant. Therefore, it was necessary to explore new techniques to extract geothermal energy effectively, meeting design conditions of power plant. One solution might be a geothermal heat exchanger to extract heat from the rock and carry it to the surface. Literature reports two basic configurations of geothermal heat exchangers: one of them is the Downhole Coaxial Heat Exchanger and the other one is Borehole Heat Exchanger. Before making a decision to implement one type or another, several studies were carried out by the authors of this work to determine what type of configuration was most suitable, considering in such studies technical and economic aspects that provided information to continue or not the project. Therefore, in this paper the numerical analysis of both configurations (Downhole Coaxial Heat Exchanger and Borehole Heat Exchanger) is presented. The study was conducted to determine what type of geothermal exchanger presents the best trade-off between maximum heat extraction rate and minimum length to minimize costs. A minimum temperature of 125°C was proposed to reach at the hot fluid heat exchanger outlet, allowing a normal operation of the geothermal-solar hybrid plant. Through numerical analysis was determined that the Borehole Heat Exchanger configuration did not present good heat extractions rates, obtaining that for 100 m length the outlet temperature of the hot fluid was even lower to that of entering into the well. This behavior was attributed to heat loss in the return pipe. For the same configuration, but using a length of 500 m, a temperature of 117.21°C was reached at the heat exchanger outlet. On the other hand, the Downhole Coaxial Heat Exchanger configuration reached a temperature of 118.35°C for a length of 100 m. For a length of 200 m a temperature of 131.25°C was obtained, whereby the facility can operate with the minimum necessary conditions. Finally, for a length of 500 m, a temperature of 134.67°C was reached, showing that this type of configuration is the most suitable to be installed in the geothermal well. Thus the Downhole Coaxial Heat Exchanger configuration has more advantages than the Borehole Heat Exchanger configuration from a technical and economic (by pipe cost) point of view.

Barbosa, Fábio C. "Competition Into Brazilian and North American Freight Rail Systems: A Comparative Regulatory Assessment." In 2018 Joint Rail Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/jrc2018-6138.

Full text
Abstract:
Competition is the driving force of any economic system, as it creates a challenging environment for service suppliers to provide affordable and reliable services to customers. Rail systems are an important element of the logistic chain, as they provide a unique service category (generally transporting large volumes at low unit costs) to shippers that otherwise would not be serviced by other modes — the so called captive shippers. In this scenario, competition is essential to guarantee the required service levels (availability and reliability), followed by competitive rates, which ultimately may influence shippers’ business competitiveness, both regionally and globally. Brazil and some North American countries (Canada, Mexico and United States), have a common feature, i.e. continental territories allied with the economic exploitation of bulky activities (industrial, mineral and agricultural), and, hence, depend strongly on heavy haul rail systems. These countries have been performing a continuous effort on improving competition practices into their rail systems, which are translated into important, and sometimes controversial, regulatory measures. These initiatives require a tenuous equilibrium, as they are supposed to provide the required competitive service at affordable rates for shippers, as well as a sustainable (financial and operational) environment to rail carriers, to guarantee the required return on long term investments and avoid compromising medium and long term rail network efficiency. This challenging task for rail market stakeholders (rail carriers, shippers and regulators) is far from a consensus. Rail companies claim that, as a capital intensive sector, governmental regulatory intervention into the rail system may inhibit their ability to invest the required funds to provide and expand rail capacity, as well as the maintenance of the required safety levels. Shippers, on the other hand, state that rail systems operate within a strong market concentration (originally formatted or due to subsequent merges and acquisitions) that give some rail carriers a disproportionate market power, that resembles a monopoly, which ultimately leaves a significant contingent of the so called captive shippers with just one freight rail carrier option, sometimes subjected to excessive rates, and, in some special instances (into offer restricted rail markets, for example), are responsible for the unavailability of rail services into the required volumes. In this context, there is currently a controversial debate regarding the effectiveness of competitive regulatory remedies into freight rail systems. This debate includes both market oriented rail systems (Canadian and U.S.), as well as rail contractual granted ones (Brazilian and Mexican). In the formers, the systems are mostly owned and operated by the private sector, and inter and intra modal options may theoretically provide the required competition level, while in the latter, rail systems have been broken into separate pieces and granted to the private sector under a concession arrangement, followed by an exclusive right to serve their territories, with trackage rights provisions, to be exerted by third parties, under previously defined circumstances and subjected to contractual agreements among rail operators. In both systems, competitive regulatory actions may be desirable and effective, as far as they may address the technical-operational-economic boundary conditions of each particular rail system. This work is supposed to present, into a review format, sourced from an extensive research into available international technical literature, and gathered as a unique document, an overview of the Brazilian and North American freight rail competition scenario, followed by a technical and unbiased effectiveness’ assessment of current (existing) and proposed competitive regulatory freight rail initiatives into Brazil, Canada, Mexico and United States, highlighting their strengths and eventually their weaknesses.

Abstract:
There are studies examining the relationship between real wage, inflation and labor productivity in the economic literature. Increase in real wages causes to an increase in labor productivity. On the other hand, productivity increases also induce inflation to fall. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between real wage, inflation and labor productivity in the 22 OECD countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, United States) in the period of 1995-2017 by panel data methods. According to results, the cointegration relationship between real wage, inflation and labor productivity was found. In addition, mutual causality was determined between the variables we discussed.

Abstract:
Major positive effect on health indicators of a country is seen to arise from the increase in their income within historical perspective. But according to many studies in the literature the impact of such changes vary depending on the country's overall level of development. In terms of the positive changes over the health indicators of a country can be said to affect the developmental processes in the same way especially in developing countries. In this context, our study highlights the recent and emerging economies of two groups of countries; BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) and MINT (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey). The relationship between health expenditure per capita and life expectancy at birth time and mortality rates of children under age 1 are analyzed retrospectively.

Abstract:
Over a period of time, a tier of mostly middle-income developing countries has developed a considerable pharmaceutical and vaccine production capacity. However, outcomes have not always been positive for domestic manufacturers in developing countries. Economic and health lessons learned from vaccine manufacturing in developing countries include challenges and positive spill-over effects. Evidence for this rapid review is taken from the south and southeast Asia (India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam), and Latin America (Brazil, Cuba, Mexico). Although data on locally manufactured drugs on the balance of trade was available, this was not readily available for vaccine manufacturing. The evidence used in this review was taken from grey and academic literature, as well as interviews with economic specialists. Although market reports on vaccine production are available for most of these countries, their data is not in the public domain.

Aparicio, Gabriela, Vida Bobić, Fernando De Olloqui, et al. Liquidity or Capital?: The Impacts of Easing Credit Constraints in Rural Mexico. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003336.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper evaluates the effectiveness of easing credit constraints for rural producers in Mexico through loans provided by a national public development finance institution. In contrast to most of the existing literature, the study focuses on the effect of medium-sized loans over a two- to four-year time horizon. This paper looks at the effects of such loans on production and investment decisions, input use, and yields. Using a multiple treatment methodology, it explores the differential impacts of providing liquidity for working capital versus providing credit for investments in fixed assets. It finds that loans increased the likelihood that producers grow and sell certain key annual crops, in particular among recipients of working capital loans. It also finds significant effects on production value and sales (per hectare), with similar impacts for recipients of both types of loans, with gains in yields driven by changes in labor quality and more intensive use of key inputs. There is no evidence of significant effects on the purchase of large machinery, but there are impacts on the acquisition of cattle. Overall, the results reported in this paper suggest that lack of liquidity is at least as important as lack of funding for new investment in capital for rural producers in Mexico. Producers benefit from easing their credit constraints, regardless of the type of loan used for that purpose.
