Il presente volume è un contributo alla ricostruzione di questo periodo non molto noto della vita di Fermi, ma segnato scientificamente dalla pubblicazione della statistica che prende il suo nome, base tra l’altro della fisica dei semiconduttori e quindi dell’elettronica moderna. Vengono anche riprodotte nel testo le «Lezioni di Meccanica Razionale» tenute da Enrico Fermi nel periodo predetto agli studenti di Scienze e del biennio propedeutico agli studi di Ingegneria. I temi affrontati da Enrico Fermi nelle sue lezioni includono la cinematica e la dinamica del punto, la cinematica e la statica dei sistemi rigidi, inclusa la statica di sistemi più in generale. Nell’occasione della quiescenza di Ricciarda Ricorda, i colleghi cafoscarini e gli allievi le fanno omaggio di una raccolta di saggi, ispirata nel titolo a un assioma della stessa festeggiata, che cioè la letteratura di viaggio (uno dei campi di indagine da lei prediletti) debba trattare di «un viaggio realmente avvenuto». Sull’odeporica si concentra soprattutto la seconda parte di questo volume, laddove la prima tocca argomenti e periodi più ampi, ma pur sempre intersecantisi con l’attività di ricerca della studiosa, dalla letteratura di genere a quella migrante, dall’amato Settecento agli scrittori contemporanei. Il libro dedicato a Ricciarda Ricorda vuole anche onorare, come scrive il Rettore nella pagina introduttiva, l’attività da lei profusa nella gestione dell’Ateneo, e insieme le sue singolari doti di rigore, competenza, abnegazione, disponibilità al dialogo e, non ultimo, il garbo.

Il periodo compreso fra Medioevo ed Età Moderna registra una significativa evoluzione del welfare, attraverso il consolidamento e la specializzazione di istituzioni nate o trasformatesi con la precisa funzione di fare attività di solidarietà e assistenza. È attorno a queste istituzioni che si sono concentrate le ricerche raccolte in questo volume, con l’obiettivo di delinearne la nascita e l’evoluzione, ma anche le fonti di finanziamento e autofinanziamento, le strategie e le modalità di acquisizione delle risorse, la gestione e la evoluzione dei patrimoni, l’organizzazione funzionale e i costi interni di sostegno ai bisognosi e di gestione del personale. Quelle istituzioni giocarono spesso un ruolo significativo nel territorio in cui operavano e numerosi contributi si soffermano sugli effetti economici e sociali prodotti dalla loro azione, non solo in termini di redistribuzione del reddito e mantenimento della pace sociale, ma anche in relazione all’eventuale rapporto con la realtà produttiva, grazie all’immissione sul mercato di prodotti e servizi svolti dagli assistititi o dal personale dell’istituzione. Un’ultima sezione è infine dedicata alle reti di assistenza non formali (solidarietà e forme di credito in seno alle famiglie, ai gruppi di indigenti, alle comunità), attraverso le quali gli individui, le comunità e l’intera società, in assenza o carenza di strutture formalizzate, tentarono di proteggersi dai rischi legati all’indigenza e alla incapacità fisica.

Il territorio come soggetto corale, pubblicato da Donzelli nel 2015. In esse una grande passione teorica, metodologica, di prospettive concrete e anche di critica ha attraversato gli interventi, dal momento che il testo di Becattini ha sollevato problemi di grande rilievo, per le prospettive dello sviluppo locale, proiettandole sul futuro stesso delle società umane in un periodo di crisi e di grande incertezza sulle vie globali da percorrere. La ricchezza, la pluralità di accenti e la profondità del dibattito che si è sviluppato assicurano alla raccolta una ‘vita propria’ anche rispetto al libro d’origine. La scomparsa di Becattini, avvenuta proprio mentre si concludeva l’editing del volume, lascia un enorme vuoto ma stimola ancor più al dibattito su questo affresco, dipinto a più mani sulla traccia della sua recente opera.

L’archivio dell’Associazione Nazionale Docenti Universitari consente di mettere a fuoco il contributo poco conosciuto che un’avanguardia di professori universitari ha fornito al processo di riforma dell’Università sviluppatosi dal 1968, dopo il fallimento del disegno di legge 2314. L’ANDU si riconobbe subito nella leadership di Giorgio Spini, professore di storia nella facoltà di Magistero di Firenze, che alla direzione sindacale accompagnò una costante elaborazione politica e culturale, in grado di proiettare la questione universitaria in una dimensione problematica di lungo periodo. Il movimento studentesco è fin dagli inizi un interlocutore fondamentale, di cui l’ANDU sostiene le iniziative, condannando le repressioni poliziesche e la chiusura delle autorità accademiche. In questo quadro il diritto allo studio diventa l’obiettivo primario della riforma dell’Università, non solo per il superamento della sua natura classista, ma come contributo determinante per mettere in discussione i rapporti di classe e gli equilibri di potere della società italiana.

La coincidenza delle ricorrenze – l’Università Ca’ Foscari compie 150 anni dalla fondazione e sono passati 100 anni dalla fine della Grande guerra – invita a ricordare la coraggiosa, allora ancora giovane, Scuola Superiore di Commercio, che, alla fine del primo conflitto, è costretta a contare i suoi allievi caduti. Dopo due decenni, nel 1943, il Regio Istituto di Economia e Commercio stabilisce di dedicare la corte minore del palazzo Giustinian dei Vescovi alla memoria di tutti gli studenti, i docenti e i dipendenti caduti nei conflitti che fino ad allora avevano insanguinato il secolo. Monumenti, memorie e lapidi sono, in senso figurato, ricomposti nella statua di Niobe, Mater Studiorum che piange la morte violenta dei propri allievi. La corte della Niobe è abitata dalla potente scultura di Napoleone Martinuzzi, suo fulcro visivo ed emotivo, e da tanti, tanti nomi. Il tentativo è stato quindi di cominciare a restituire non solo la storia di quello spazio ma anche delle esistenze e del pensiero di coloro i cui nomi hanno qui trovato dimora. Questi aspetti della memoria sono stati al centro del lavoro di molti e sottotraccia nel lavoro di tutti: di chi si è occupato di delineare un profilo esistenziale dei caduti, di chi ha studiato le ideologie e le politiche che hanno animato i periodi tribolati delle guerre e dei dopoguerra o ha analizzato i processi istituzionali e la mentalità in tempo di guerra, di chi ha indagato sull’assetto e le trasformazioni architettoniche della corte. Ma il problema del tempo passato, delle tracce che lascia e di come conservarle si è posto anche a chi ha compiuto ricerche sui documenti e a chi ha studiato le pietre del sacrario e ne ha avuto cura.

L’idea di questo volume nasce al momento di ripensare l’organizzazione dell’Università di Firenze conseguente alla recente riforma, con l’obiettivo di ripercorrere l’evoluzione della Facoltà di Ingegneria nei suoi 40 anni, raccontandone e documentandone la storia, raccogliendo ricordi e documenti di un periodo attraversato da mutamenti significativi. La ricerca effettuata dai curatori e da tanti colleghi ha allargato progressivamente l’orizzonte del lavoro per recuperare non solo i contenuti della storia accademica ma anche quelli della storia “civile” della Facoltà, osservandone il laborioso crescere, affermarsi e consolidarsi nell’Ateneo Fiorentino, e rilevandone anche le relazioni con il contesto sociale ed economico (la città, la regione, il coinvolgimento nazionale ed internazionale) che circonda un soggetto collettivo significativo come la “nostra” Facoltà d’Ingegneria. Questo ha consentito di esplorare e documentare ambiti rilevanti per una conoscenza non banale di quanti attori hanno attraversato lo scenario della Facoltà e di quali fenomeni la Facoltà stessa sia stata osservatrice e protagonista. Così il lavoro si è arricchito di una molteplicità di contenuti che ciascun capitolo declina con piacevole energia e che è difficile sintetizzare in un paradigma solo storico o celebrativo. Se pensiamo ai lettori di questo volume, pensiamo a coloro che vi ritroveranno il percorso della propria vita, a chi troverà qui le radici del presente e chi vi vorrà cercare le motivazioni per il futuro.

La distribuzione dei beni di consumo nell’Europa medievale e moderna era multiforme e coinvolgeva spazi e attori diversi. Nelle fiere e nei mercati, nelle botteghe più o meno grandi delle città si vendeva ogni tipo di derrate alimentari e di oggetti necessari alla vita quotidiana. Erano anche innumerevoli i piccoli ambulanti che tenevano banco per strada, i contadini che raggiungevano la città per offrire i prodotti dei loro orti o del pollaio, della caccia o della raccolta spontanea, passando di casa in casa. Mercanti ambulanti percorrevano con le loro balle e casse anche le vie meno frequentate, raggiungendo villaggi e frazioni disperse. Una grande molteplicità di attori economici che concorrevano assieme a raggiungere ogni tipo di consumatore, dai più agiati ai più umili. L’obiettivo del progetto di ricerca è stato quello di comprendere l’organizzazione economica e l’evoluzione di queste diverse forme di commercio al minuto. Sul piano dei risultati, i contributi raccolti in questo volume costituiscono la risposta storiograficamente più aggiornata ad alcune delle questioni proposte, come l’analisi dei legami tra le diverse scale spaziali (dalla bottega alle reti europee di mercanti ambulanti), del commercio formale e informale tra regola e pratica, della circolazione dei beni fra città e campagna, delle tensioni fra gli attori di questi scambi, le loro rivalità e i loro accordi, ma anche le attese dei consumatori e le esigenze dello stato, e degli effetti sull’organizzazione istituzionale e dei mestieri della distribuzione nel periodo compreso fra il Medioevo e il XVIII secolo.

Isolated methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) refers to a group of inborn errors of organic acid metabolism caused by impaired conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA. Individuals with MMA experience both acute and chronic neurological complications. The pathophysiology likely reflects impaired energy metabolism in the mitochondria leading to neuronal toxicity in MMA. MMA presents with a spectrum of clinical phenotypes with onset of symptoms anytime from the neonatal period to adulthood. Once there is clinical suspicion for MMA, definitive diagnosis requires biochemical testing. The treatment of MMA centers on acute interventions when affected individuals are ill, as well as preventative measures when they are doing relatively well. Neuroimaging in MMA demonstrates a variety of findings.

The age of the Solar System and Earth has been established at 4.55 Ga through the isochron approach; U-Pb dating was also used to date the boundary between the Cretaceous and Palaeogene geological periods to 66 Ma, the period associated with a mass extinction on Earth when 70 per cent of living things died out.

Cobalamin C deficiency (cblC) and related disorders of intracellular cobalamin metabolism may present at any time from the prenatal period through adolescence/adulthood and are due to deficiency of the cobalamin cofactors adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin. Chronic complications of cblC depend on the age at presentation and may include poor growth, renal dysfunction, neuropsychiatric manifestations, intellectual disability, strokes, progressive leukoencephalopathy and spinal cord degeneration, psychiatric manifestations and executive function deficits, and optic nerve and retinal anomalies. While less common than in isolated MMA, acute metabolic decompensation may occur in cblC patients due to accumulation of methylmalonic acid and associate metabolites and should be managed as in isolated MMA in conjunction with a metabolic consultant. The most common inborn error of folate (vitamin B9) metabolism relevant for adult patients is methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency. Manifestations are primarily neurological, but the disorder may present in a substantial number of adults with psychiatric symptoms. Early recognition with adequate treatment is crucial.

Over three thousand Karawari-speaking people live in the East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Among the Ambonwari, who belong to one of four dialectal groups, canonical imperatives can be marked with -ra or -nda (‘do it!’), with -n (‘come to do it!’), and with potential -mbi (‘should do it!’). Non-canonical imperatives directed toward first person can be marked either with -n (‘let’s go to do it’) or with -mba and potential prefix and- (‘let’s do it’, ‘should do it’). Imperatives directed toward third person are marked with -mba and imperative prefix ka- (‘let them do it’). Negative imperatives have fewer forms than positive imperatives. For an egalitarian kinship-based society, where people’s lives depend on sharing, exchange, and cooperation, commands are a common way of daily communication. Being used as directives, demands, requests, instructions, exhortations, advice, and even greetings, they generate and reflect close relationships and intimacy between people.

This chapter examines the formation of contract under Malaysian law. The Malaysian Contracts Act 1950 (‘MCA 1950’) is modelled on the Indian Contract Act 1872 (‘ICA 1872’). In common with the ICA 1872, the analytical structure for the formation of contract is strikingly similar to that of English law, with unique definitions introduced by the ICA 1872. A proposal, upon acceptance by the person to whom the proposal is directed, becomes a promise; reciprocal promises which constitute consideration for each other result in an agreement; upon the satisfaction of the other conditions for the formation of contract, a contract is constituted. The continuing influence of English common law on Malaysian law is expressly provided by sections 3 and 5 of the Civil Law Act 1956; these form the basis for the reception of the doctrine of promissory estoppel which is absent in the text of the MCA 1950. Where the MCA 1950 does not preclude the adoption of English legal developments, the Malaysian courts have been ready to adopt such developments.

This article presents data on the Middle Bronze Age (MBA) of southeastern and eastern Anatolia, which were more resilient than northern Mesopotamia and never endured the collapse suffered there at the end of the third millennium BCE. On the contrary, the mixed subsistence economy and the relatively lower levels of urbanism and reliance on intensive dry farming made these Anatolian societies more resilient and less prone to ecological disaster. Thus, the climatic catastrophe that devastated numerous urban centers of northern Mesopotamia did not affect the Anatolian regions, which instead show clear signs of continuity between the Early and the Middle Bronze Age periods. In addition, interregional exchange between these regions and northern Mesopotamia played an important part in the further development of these communities during the MBA and in creating the framework for the creation of important city-states, especially along the Upper Euphrates River Valley, and for strengthening local networks of chiefly estates, primarily in the Upper Tigris region.

Fluctuating Miocene temperatures peaked at 17–14 Ma, followed by dramatic cooling. Cooling continued through the Pliocene and Pleistocene, with another major glacial expansion at 3–2 Ma. Several interacting drivers control Antarctic climate. On timescales of 10,000–100,000 years, insolation varies with orbital cycles, causing periodic climate variations. Opening of Southern Ocean gateways produced a circumpolar current that thermally isolated Antarctica. Declining atmospheric CO2 triggered Cenozoic glaciation. Antarctic glaciations affect global climate by lowering sea level, intensifying atmospheric circulation, and increasing planetary albedo. The current volume developed out of an international workshop of the German Research Foundation's Research Group 530 on "self-narratives in a transcultural perspective" [DFG-Forschergruppe 530 "Selbstzeugnisse in transkultureller Per-spektive"] that was held at the Orient-Institut Istanbul from September 29 until October 2, 2009. The workshop formed part of a long-standing cooperation with the Orient-Institut Istanbul, where research on transcultural self-narratives con-tinues beyond the term of the research group, with the project "Istanbul Memo-ries. Personal narratives of the late Ottoman period" (www.istanbulmemories.org). The stimulating discussions at the Orient-Institut Istanbul centered around the multifaceted interplay between dress and person/personhood in written self-narratives or ego documents. By focusing on "Fashioning the Self in Transcul-tural Settings: The Uses and Significance of Dress in Self-Narratives," we hoped to supplement the existing research on self-narratives with the dimension of ma-terial culture. In the workshop light was shed on the potential of dress to shape identities, to express forms of affiliation or foreignness, as well as on vestimen-tary practices. Were clothes simply purchased to be worn, to possess, and to give away as a gift or in barter trade? During the presentations and discussions it be-came clear that new insights might be gleaned if one widens the focus in self-narratives, beyond material culture to include the consideration of other sources such as trousseau inventories or account books.

This chapter offers an analysis of the Qur’ān as depicted in the works of Wang Daiyu, Liu Zhi, and Ma Dexin. Wang’s, Liu’s, and Ma’s works were representative of transitional periods within the Sino-Islamic intellectual tradition, and they reveal how the Sino-Muslims’ engagement with the Qur’ān changed over time. Each author translated and used the Qur’ān in a different manner, while simultaneously building on the work of his predecessors. This was due to their individualized methodological approaches to scripture, paired with their historical circumstances and specific discursive settings. From a reading of their engagement with the Qur’ān, we see that over time, Sino-Muslims gradually moved from the use of approximate thematic renditions of Qur’ānic sentiments to a clear intention to offer the entire Qur’ān to the Sino-Muslim community.

Manufacture of IMP is discussed together with methods of blinding. The role of the Qualified person (QP) is reviewed. The need for study drug accountability is discussed in context with the regulatory requirements (Clinical Trial Directive 2001/20/EC and in particular, GMP Directive 2003/94/EC Annex 13). The chapter explains what needs to be accounted for and describes the types of records including: labelling records, delivery and transportation, receipt, storage, preparation, dispensing and administration, unblinding records, reconciliation, returns and destruction. In this work, a sequel to my A New Science: The Discovery of Religion in an Age of Reason (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2010), I study some major aspects of the scholarly study of religion in the long nineteenth century—from the Enlightenment to the First World War. More precisely, I seek to understand the new status of Judaism and Islam in the formative period of the new discipline. In order to do that, I focus on the concept of Semitic monotheism, a concept developed by Ernest Renan around the mid-nineteenth century, on the basis of the postulated (and highly problematic) contradistinction between Aryan and Semitic families of peoples, cultures, and religions. This contradistinction grew from the Western discovery of Sanskrit and its relationship with European languages, at the time of the Enlightenment and Romanticism. Together with the rise of scholarly Orientalism, this discovery offered new perspectives on the East, as a consequence of which the Near East was demoted, as it were, from its traditional status as the locus of the biblical revelations. The book essentially studies a central issue in the modern study of religion. Doing so, however, it emphasizes that the new dualistic taxonomy of religions had major consequences and sheds new light on the roots of European attitudes to Jews and Muslims in the twentieth century and up to the present day.

Ha dedicado treinta años al estudio y la docencia de la Antropología Pedagógica y la Teoría de la Educación, entre otras materias, en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Supongo que puede tener algún interés que un teórico, como el que suscribe, trate de hacer partícipes a personas que no lo son, de algunas reflexiones acerca de lo que ocurre puertas adentro del aula, pensadas desde su experiencia docente en la Universidad, así como, unos años antes, en varios Institutos de Bachillerato de Madrid.</p><p>No soy directivo ni lo he sido nunca. Pero sí he dedicado muchos miles de horas a dar clase. Lógicamente, ahí se ven las cosas desde otro ángulo que el que ofrece un despacho. De cruzar esas dos perspectivas tal vez pueda salir algo interesante. En todo caso, mi propósito es compartir la óptica de un docente con quienes están en las tareas de la gestión, la dirección y la organización escolar. Naturalmente, puedo hablar de la mía, bien que la he contrastado con muchos colegas. Post-glacial aquatic ecosystems in Eurasia and North America, such as the Baltic Sea, evolved in the freshwater, brackish, and marine environments that fringed the melting glaciers. Warming of the climate initiated sea level and land rise and subsequent changes in aquatic ecosystems. Seminal ideas on ancient developing ecosystems were based on findings in Swedish large lakes of species that had arrived there from adjacent glacial freshwater or marine environments and established populations which have survived up to the present day. An ecosystem of the first freshwater stage, the Baltic Ice Lake initially consisted of ice-associated biota. Subsequent aquatic environments, the Yoldia Sea, the Ancylus Lake, the Litorina Sea, and the Mya Sea, are all named after mollusc trace fossils. These often convey information on the geologic period in question and indicate some physical and chemical characteristics of their environment. The ecosystems of various Baltic Sea stages are regulated primarily by temperature and freshwater runoff (which affects directly and indirectly both salinity and nutrient concentrations). Key ecological environmental factors, such as temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels, not only change seasonally but are also subject to long-term changes (due to astronomical factors) and shorter disturbances, for example, a warm period that essentially formed the Yoldia Sea, and more recently the “Little Ice Age” (which terminated the Viking settlement in Iceland).There is no direct way to study the post-Holocene Baltic Sea stages, but findings in geological samples of ecological keystone species (which may form a physical environment for other species to dwell in and/or largely determine the function of an ecosystem) can indicate ancient large-scale ecosystem features and changes. Such changes have included, for example, development of an initially turbid glacial meltwater to clearer water with increasing primary production (enhanced also by warmer temperatures), eventually leading to self-shading and other consequences of anthropogenic eutrophication (nutrient-rich conditions). Furthermore, the development in the last century from oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) to eutrophic conditions also included shifts between the grazing chain (which include large predators, e.g., piscivorous fish, mammals, and birds at the top of the food chain) and the microbial loop (filtering top predators such as jellyfish). Another large-scale change has been a succession from low (freshwater glacier lake) biodiversity to increased (brackish and marine) biodiversity. The present-day Baltic Sea ecosystem is a direct descendant of the more marine Litorina Sea, which marks the beginning of the transition from a primeval ecosystem to one regulated by humans. The recent Baltic Sea is characterized by high concentrations of pollutants and nutrients, a shift from perennial to annual macrophytes (and more rapid nutrient cycling), and an increasing rate of invasion by non-native species. Thus, an increasing pace of anthropogenic ecological change has been a prominent trend in the Baltic Sea ecosystem since the Ancylus Lake.Future development is in the first place dependent on regional factors, such as salinity, which is regulated by sea and land level changes and the climate, and runoff, which controls both salinity and the leaching of nutrients to the sea. However, uncertainties abound, for example the future development of the Gulf Stream and its associated westerly winds, which support the sub-boreal ecosystems, both terrestrial and aquatic, in the Baltic Sea area. Thus, extensive sophisticated, cross-disciplinary modeling is needed to foresee whether the Baltic Sea will develop toward a freshwater or marine ecosystem, set in a sub-boreal, boreal, or arctic climate.
