Abstract:
This thesis overviews my experience during graduate school making tangible, object oriented sculpture. I have been working formally to compose space in a way that develops a narrative between parts. The work is also a bridge between the fields of painting and sculpture, in terms of drawing with form and both painted and local, material color. My palette has mostly consisted of bronze casting, steel fabrication, fiberglass and epoxy resin, paint, the found object, woodworking, and mold making. This work is also conceptually based in showing the hand worked qualities of the materials, the transfer of meaning through casting, and my emotional relationship with the various parts of the sculptures. The three major themes of the work are: divine love and the complex of the apocalypse, the complexities and psychology concerning the relationship between a man and a woman, and the intrigue, potential energy, and beauty of the systems mankind hasinvented to harness the atom. The major artistic influences for this body of work have been: Jasper Johns, Marcel Duchamp, Constantine Brancusi, Alberto Giacommetti, Reg Butler, Henry Moore, Lynn Chadwick, Kenneth Armitage, Jeff Koons, Terry Winters, William DeKooning, Richard Diebenkorn, David Smith and Charles Long. I retain a strongrelationship with the movements of Dada, Surrealism, Futurism, and Assemblage, and amalso currently involved in solidifying the Manifesto of Raubeaux with a small group ofesteemed colleagues.

Abstract:
The purpose of this phenomenographical case study is to explore the ways in which a group of MFA students conceive of their learning as they are enmeshed within an MFA community. The research follows along two guiding research questions: 1) What does artistic learning involve for graduate students in an MFA community? 2) How is one's artistic practice shaped by one's active participation in an MFA community? The findings of this study have been presented as lines of artistic learning and help to show the various conceptions that MFA students have of their learning as artists while in an MFA program of study. Ultimately, it is in better understanding one's lines of artistic learning that MFA students can be better supported in their journeying to become professional, practicing artists.

This essay is a reflection on various layers which inform my artistic practice, and particularly expands on the background and research for my short film The Spirit, The Lamp &amp; The Permanent Inhabitant. It's an attempt to describe how certain parts of my Gotlandic background influence and inspire my artistic practice, and also to show how reading, writing and critical reflection are important parts of my process. The essay pays tribute to an oral storytelling tradition that can be found on the island Gotland, Sweden, but is also an examination into how tourism has affected human relationships, and speculatively, the relationship between humans and ancient spirits.

Malandra, Allyson Jean. "How I failed to get my MFA." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1687.

Abstract:
This is the thorough examination of Allyson Malandra's process of becoming a character, and the many different challenges and triumphs she has faced throughout the past three years of developing her craft. It also aims to bring into focus where the work will be headed throughout the many years to come. The goal of this process paper is to examine the many different details and intricacies that go into a role, and also how to troubleshoot problems that may arise throughout the journey. Our process is how we, as actors, attempt to create life on stage, and discover and unfold the underlying truth that connects all human beings. It is understood that each role for an actor will present a different set of chges, and therefore it is important to understand a baseline process that gets at the core of the actor's work. Through examination of this process, previous and current chges in the work will be discussed, as well as ways to move through these issues. Ideas on what is valuable in acting will be discussed, as a way of staying centered and focused, and also retaining quality in the craft. The examination will also explore three main pillars of the work--breathe, listen, and play--and how these anchor Allyson's artistry. The ultimate goals of this examination are to create a support for the process, to chge her work in the future, and to help her continue to grow and expand, both as an artist and as a person.

Abstract:
In the course of studying painting for the past three years at the University of Iowa, I have found collaborating with other artists to be a great way for me to try on different hats. Two of these collaborations in particular, The Old Man Study Group with Hamlett Dobbins (Memphis, TN) and The Coracle Drawing Club with David Dunlap (Iowa City, IA), have given me the license and opportunity to pretend to be someone else. These collaborative projects have asked me to consider, and at times adopt, even if only for a moment, the interests and concerns of another maker. A few months into these two projects, I noticed that the work I was making on my own, in the isolation of my own studio, was suddenly open to the world's innovations, and not just my own.

Foster, Helen Cecilia. "US apparel imports from China in the context of MFA IV." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39908.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to analyze US apparel trade building up to and following the MFA IV renewal in 1986, so as to gain insight into the reasons for US apparel industry support of the new fiber inclusions, and to gauge effects of MFA IV on US apparel imports overall and specifically from the PRC. The study focused on the period 1978 - 1988. Total imports from all suppliers (World) were examined by country of origin: China (PRC), and rest of world (ROW); fiber content: MFA IV-fiber or all fibers and whether knitted or woven construction. The imports were then examined to determine the impact of economic variables such as the exchange rate, and US personal apparel consumption expenditure (PCE). Imports were found to have increased from 1978 to 1987 and then to have declined in all categories except one from 1987 to 1988. The MFA IV, implemented in August 1986 was believed to have caused a reduction of import volumes after an initial lag period (expected in international trade). However, other factors were implicated in the trade reduction primarily the fall of the dollar. The dollar was strong through the early 1980s until its peak in 1985, it then declined for the rest of the study. The one category which continued to increase after the trade restriction was items of MFA IV woven apparel. The reason for this continued increase is not clear but it is believed to be the absence of specific restriction, i.e., pure silk had not been included in bilateral agreements so it is possible that suppliers were switching the product mix to increasing quantities of the less restricted group. Also this would have been the case if the items were coming from new and/or unrestricted suppliers. In conclusion, it is felt that the apparel import rate or increase was the primary concern and the factor that determined action not the actual volume of imports as the MFA IV-fibers were increasingly used in apparel production.<br>Ph. Walker, Ginger. "'The Writing Writes Itself': Deleuzian Desire and the Creative Writing MFA Degree." VCU Scholars Compass, 2017. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4721.

Full text
Abstract:
This post-qualitative inquiry project investigated subjectivity (sense of self) among graduates of creative writing Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs. The project asked how subjectivity is involved in the creative writing process and how that process fuels further writing after a creative piece (such as the MFA thesis) is completed. A post-qualitative, thinking-with-theory approach was used to explore the role of subjectivity among four anonymous graduates of creative writing MFA programs who provided writing samples describing their creative writing processes. Following the thinking-with-theory approach, the data were analyzed using Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of productive desire. Study findings are presented in two formats. First, a traditional, qualitative presentation of findings describes how unconscious desires develop a beneficial weakening of subjectivity that may encourage creative writers to continue writing after completion of the MFA degree. Next, further findings are presented via a nonlinear, rhizomatic data assemblage. The project concludes with recommendations for the use of Deleuzian productive desire as a pedagogical framework in graduate-level creative writing courses, as well as a call for the consideration of post-qualitative research methods in the field of education.

Full text
Abstract:
MFA and LCA methodologies were applied to analyse the anthropogenic aluminium cycle in Italy with focus on historical evolution of stocks and flows of the metal, embodied GHG emissions, and potentials from recycling to provide key features to Italy for prioritizing industrial policy toward low-carbon technologies and materials. Historical trend series were collected from 1947 to 2009 and balanced with data from production, manufacturing and waste management of aluminium-containing products, using a ‘top-down’ approach to quantify the contemporary in-use stock of the metal, and helping to identify ‘applications where aluminium is not yet being recycled to its full potential and to identify present and future recycling flows’. The MFA results were used as a basis for the LCA aimed at evaluating the carbon footprint evolution, from primary and electrical energy, the smelting process and the transportation, embodied in the Italian aluminium. A discussion about how the main factors, according to the Kaya Identity equation, they did influence the Italian GHG emissions pattern over time, and which are the levers to mitigate it, it has been also reported. The contemporary anthropogenic reservoirs of aluminium was estimated at about 320 kg per capita, mainly embedded within the transportation and building and construction sectors. Cumulative in-use stock represents approximately 11 years of supply at current usage rates (about 20 Mt versus 1.7 Mt/year), and it would imply a potential of about 160 Mt of CO2eq emissions savings. A discussion of criticality related to aluminium waste recovery from the transportation and the containers and packaging sectors was also included in the study, providing an example for how MFA and LCA may support decision-making at sectorial or regional level. The research constitutes the first attempt of an integrated approach between MFA and LCA applied to the aluminium cycle in Italy.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
North Atlantic Black is a collection of contemplative, lyrical poems that explore issues of coming out, suicide, yearning, and male relationships. Woven together, North Atlantic Black moves through different questions of masculinity encountered by the poet through the process of coming out. Early poems explore themes of masks, of theater, and of dressing and costume as means of escaping the traditional bounds of masculinity North Atlantic Black further braids in concepts of home, how they relate to identity through heritage and expectation, and how they inform the poet’s thoughts on what it means for men to have relationships—how ideas of masculinity have imposed on the poet’s life, and weigh on the relationships he wishes to pursue. Throughout, the moody colors of the Maritimes and the North East, of sealing ports and cold, forested mountains, loom over these confessions and contemplations.

Abstract:
Cellular metabolism is one of the most fundamental systems for any living organisms, involving thousands of metabolites and reactions that forms large interconnected metabolic networks. Proper and comprehensive understanding of the metabolism in human cells has been a field of research for a long time. One of the key parameters in understanding the metabolism are the metabolic fluxes, which are the rates of conversion of metabolic intermediates. Currently, one of the main approaches for determining these fluxes is metabolic flux analysis (MFA), in which isotope-labelled compounds are introduced into the system and measured. Mathematical models are then used to calculate a prediction of the systems flux configuration. However, the current paradigm of MFA lack established methods for validating that a model can accurately predict quantities for which there are no experimental data. In this study, a model for the central human metabolism was created and evaluated with regards to the model’s ability to predict a validation dataset. Further, an uncertainty analysis of these predictions were performed with a prediction profile likelihood analysis. This study has conclusively shown that MFA models can be validated against experimental data that the model has never seen before. Additionally, such model predictions were shown to be observable with a well determined prediction uncertainty. These results shows that a systematic validation of MFA models is possible. This in turn allows for a greater trust to be placed in the models, and in any conclusions that are based on such models.

Abstract:
In the last decades, many tools have been developed to understand and manage the anthropogenic cycles of materials, with different approaches. Each handles the material flows in society in different ways and each possesses its respective databases that fuel their uses. Yet there seems to be no common ground of communication between design activities and cycling activities, as well as their respective stakeholders, which hinders the information exchanges required for a proper management of discarded products (and their materials). This thesis provides two original contributions to circular product design: a tool for the integration of material circularity in product design and a framework to characterize material cycling networks. The tool is composed of a multi-criteria indicator for circular material value that is used in the Design for Material Circularity method. The framework is based on an extensive literature review enhanced by industry experts’ interviews and provides a basis for data collection and knowledge capitalization on cycling activities. The open-loop recycling networks of eight materials, from the three main material classes, are characterized using this framework (steel, aluminium, copper, precious metals, specialty metals, rare earth elements, plastics and glass). Two case studies detail the deployment of these contributions. The first focuses on the optimal choice of material and end-of-life scenario for a 1,5-litre bottle container. The second is aimed at identifying material circularity hotspots and ideal end-of-life scenarios for a vehicular lithium-ion battery pack

Abstract:
In my research into interdisciplinary choreographic processes, I found there to be a lacking representation of recent scholarship dedicated to exploring the relationship between literature and dance. As a dance theatre choreographer who often utilizes textual sources as impetuses for artistic creation, I have employed methods of traditional dramaturgy in my practice and, in seeking scholarship on this subject, have noted a need for clear examples of dance dramaturgy in practice. In this thesis study, I employed methods from literary studies and dramaturgy in the process of adapting a work of short fiction by Kurt Vonnegut for the stage. I documented my process and have structured the information for the benefit of those who may read it. The artistic product of this research was presented to an audience in direct relation to its literary source. At the conclusion of this research, I posit that dance can function as literary criticism.

Abstract:
This paper offers a contextualization of my art practice, within particular trends in contemporary art and its discourse. It traces an expressed interest in networked objects, and the indeterminacy of meaning in art; from researched examples and texts, through specific expressions of these ideas in my thesis art exhibition. The paper then outlines key areas of practical interest to the experimental viability of my art practice. The paper goes on to explore the relationships between indeterminacy, experimentation, and creativity in the arts; within the context of an original thought experiment that draws an analogy between topics in physics and the human mind. Non-rational art ideas are lauded for their uniquely explorative potential within this conjectural model. Optimism, and a will to think experimentally, are offered as the abiding principles of my art practice; as well as being universal tools that all human beings can depend upon.

Integration was done between MFA, energy and greenhouse gas (GHG).Technologies in all production related processes of aluminium cycle were analyzed. Energy consumption and emissions were calculated throughout the aluminium cycle. This technology information and calculations were used in my scenarios for possible reduction of emissions. After the agreement with my supervisor the historical in-use stock was not done. Assumption here is that demand will increase.A sensitivity analyze was not conducted due the fact that that type of analyze can not be used for large changes in the system. If all scenarios are implemented then the decrease of total GHG emissions in aluminium production in Russia will equal to 22.3% and decrease in the total energy consumption will equal to 38,4%.

Abstract:
Kayaking is a watersport activity that involves paddling performed within leisure purposes. Although kayaking provides pleasure to the practitioners, there are some adverse environmental issues concerning the site used to perform kayaking due to the equipment. This paper identifies and analyzes the lifecycle stages in which negative environmental impacts are generated. Melker of Sweden is an outdoor company specialized in delivering high-quality kayaks. This study aims to present an overview of the current environmental performance of Melker of Sweden’s kayaks. For this purpose, two environmental assessment tools are applied: material flow analysis and life cycle assessment. The Material Flow Analysis (MFA) results show that the transport of material to the manufacturing unit generates a considerable amount of emissions. Additionally, hull manufacturing and assembling accessories were found to be the least resource-efficient operation among all. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results identify the transport of material and the manufacturing phase as the primary sources responsible for environmental impacts. On the one hand, the use of epoxy resin and gel coat is the root cause of high contribution of the manufacturing phase. On the other hand, the use of flax fiber found to be the least contributing material to adverse environmental impacts. This report also presents a list of recommendations regarding the import of material, the efficacy of the manufacturing operations, the type of raw material, and waste treatment alternatives.<br>Fysisk aktivitet kan innefatta olika fritidsaktiviteter, däribland friluftsliv.

Xia, Yan. "The impact of the removal of the Multi-Fiber Arrangement on textile and cotton trade of the United States and China." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3311.

Abstract:
Textiles and apparel trade has been governed by the Multi-Fiber Arrangement (MFA) for three decades. Trade restrictions have generated substantial welfare losses and price wedges in exporting and importing countries through trade distortions. Beginning in 1995, textiles and apparel trade underwent fundamental changes in trade flows and patterns. The World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (ATC) aimed to remove all MFA quotas by January 2005. This study established an equilibrium displacement model to investigate the impact on textile and cotton sectors of different countries and country-groups of removing the MFA quota. The model specifies the basic linkages of textile and cotton markets in the United States, China and four other country-groups. With different assumptions about U.S. textile supply elasticity, foreign cotton exporters’ reaction and changes in the U.S. farm program payments, alternative scenarios are simulated to predict changes in domestic and import demand for textiles and apparel, import demand for U.S. cotton, domestic and import price of textiles and apparel, U.S. cotton price and adjusted world cotton price. Uniform distribution was imposed for selected parameters involved in the model to overcome the deficiency of equilibrium displacement models of assuming certainty of known related parameters. Results indicate increased import demand for U.S. cotton by China, higher U.S. cotton supply, more textile and apparel supply from China, decreased domestic demand for U.S. cotton, and lower U.S. domestic demand for textiles and apparel. However, prices of both textile and cotton markets experience both positive and negative changes under different scenarios. Holding other assumptions unchanged, when farm program payments increase, U.S. cotton price and adjusted world cotton price declined. When farm program payments are held constant, prices rise. The changes expected in U.S. cotton price are, in absolute value, greater than those of the adjusted world price.

Abstract:
Power grids have a high content of metal, mainly copper and aluminium. When old cables reach their end-of-life, or in some way lose their intended purpose, they are usually left lying in their subsurface position. Material no longer used, but not yet discarded as waste, is in a state known as hibernation. Over time there is an accumulation of hibernating cables under ground that potentially could be recovered or “mined”. The aim of this study is to examine the total hibernating metal content of an urban, subsurface power grid, how it is distributed and also what reasons for disconnection are the most common. The focus of the study is the power grid of Linköping. Using a GIS based variant of material flow analysis the hibernating metal stock is examined both in terms of size and spatial distribution. The results of the study show a significant amount of hibernating copper and aluminium; in total 240 tons of metal were identified. By comparing the results with previous studies both similar and differing patterns appear. The main differences lie in the distribution of the stock within the city which is affected by the characteristics of the cities. When examining the reasons for disconnection continuous repair and maintenance work seems to be the most common reason for disconnection of cables. Further studies on how the characteristics of a city affects the formation of hibernating metal stocks in the infrastructure are suggested.

Abstract:
This thesis paper explores the mixed-media MFA installation show, Family Secrets: The Secrets That Lie Within. The show is a culmination of the author’s work during her time in the MFA in Media Arts Program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The show uses a variety of mediums including sound, video and illustration to tell this tale of family secrets and betrayal. As a young child, the author thought her family was perfect. They gathered every week at her grandparents’ house and were very close, or so she thought. As she started to move into adulthood, the idyllic childhood seemed like a distant memory. A series of events happened that changed her family dynamic forever. In the show, Family Secrets, viewers are led through a series of scenes taken from the author’s life. Each room reveals a little more until you are faced with the family’s biggest secret.

I was watching the tele the other night and a commercial came on exclaiming that scientists have found a way to translate waveforms into text to help the deaf. I realized at that moment; I am as much a scientist as I am an artist. In this regard, composition is deemed a scientific recipe. Ingredients such as conveying the rhythm of linguistic discoveries to further guide fragmented responses of memories. Analyzing frequencies emerging upon application of colors adjacent as well as finding the visual balance that coheres with a particular tempo as relating to sound and vibration to exploit the untold conversations between traditional means and contemporary constructions. There’s a sync button for everything we do, finding that button is the test. I do not confine myself as a scientist, tomorrow I may think I’m a surgeon. Abstract:
In the beginning of the 2004 video essay Los Angeles plays itself, the Hollywood critical film theorist Thom Andersen states ‘The city is big. The image is small’. What Andersen refers to, as a long-time citizen of Los Angeles, is the way Hollywood tends to create a romanticised and narrowed image of its city through film. The three-hour long documentary by Andersen is built up mainly by the use of clips from different Hollywood movies through its history of filmmaking. By representing and reproducing these clips, he examines the ways the city has been depicted through decades. Utilizing and disassembling these misinterpreted images and stories, Andersen creates his own story which further reveals what he believes to be the truth. What interests me in Andersen’s case is the way he works with a city and its architecture, displaying the embedded social and political structures, by twisting the perspectives through the use and repetition of these historically recognizable clips. When he takes something that already exists and alters its presence or meaning, other questions might be evoked, making it more visible by exposing its opposites.

Kim, Eun Hee. "Effects of Quantitative Restrictions on U.S. Textile and Apparel Imports over 1995-2010: An Analysis using Gravity Models." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/64915.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects on U.S. textile and apparel imports of the quantitative restrictions imposed under the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (ATC) (1995-2005), the post-ATC U.S. safeguard quotas on 21 categories of Chinese textile and apparel products (2006-2008), and no quantitative restrictions on U.S. textile and apparel imports (2009-2010). Data were sourced from the Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) in the U.S. Department of Commerce, the GeoDist dataset from the Centre d'Etudes Prospectives et d'Informations Internationales (CEPII), and the United Nations Commodity Trade (U.N. Comtrade) database. In this research, three gravity equations were developed and estimated based on the existing gravity model. The first gravity equation was estimated to assess the effects of the independent variables commonly included in gravity models on the total value of U.S. textile and apparel imports from 187 exporting countries with a scaled dependent variable and from 177 without it. The result of the first gravity equation indicated that distance and the per capita GDPs of the exporting countries, exchange rates, and the total GDPs of the exporting countries are statistically significant and have the expected signs in the model with the scaled dependent variable. The second gravity equation was estimated to access the overall effect of the presence or absence of quotas and VERs on U.S. textile and apparel import quantity from the 187 exporting countries. The results from the second gravity model showed that the presence or absence of quotas or VERs is significant and has an unexpected positive sign because the United States tended to impose quotas and VERs on textile and apparel products that it imported in large amounts. The third gravity equation was estimated to assess trade creation and trade diversion effect of the quota and VER levels of U.S. textile and apparel imports with separate equations by product types considering the endogeneity by applying instrumental variables. The result from the third gravity equation showed that the quota and VER level is significant for fabric, apparel, and made-up products with expected signs but the variable is not significant for yarn products. These findings suggest that U.S. textile and apparel imports from the exporting countries limited by quotas and VERs on U.S. textile and apparel imports increased more than rest of world (ROW) imports from those countries as the quota and VER levels on U.S textile and apparel imports increased. Therefore, trade creation occurred between the United States and the exporting countries as the total SME quota or VER levels on those imports increased during the ATC and safeguard period. However, these findings show the demand of yarn as intermediates does not increase much in the United States; therefore, the increase of the total yarn quota or VER level has less of an effect on the yarn imports than other product types.<br>Ph. Wilkens, Díaz-Muñoz Camila. "Análisis Comparativo del Metabolismo de Lactato para Células CHO en Glucosa y Galactosa." Tesis, Universidad de Chile, 2011. http://repositorio.uchile.cl/handle/2250/102663.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper explores the `creative' process of postmemory in relation to family photographs, story telling, the absence of memory, and the subsequent construction of new and elastic family histories in my MFA thesis artwork. I define postmemory and how it relates to the limited number of existing photographs that document my family's experience as displaced persons and immigrants. I also discuss how literalist art has influenced the works in my thesis exhibition and outline the reasons for the absence of actual photographs in my work. Then, drawing from Freud's ideas of the condensation of dreams and the formation of screen memories, I discuss the relationship between historical family photographs, the memories elicited by them, and the act of forgetting to reveal the elasticity of truth in postmemory and how my work represents the beginnings of a personal understanding of a fragmented family history riddled with holes and unknowns. I also describe and discuss the two installation works found in my thesis exhibition, which are titled Descendant and Lineage. Finally, I outline the influence of other artists and describe how these ideas are tied together in my artwork.
