In the present work Mg and MgAl thin films were fabricated using physical vapour deposition (PVD) technologies as non-traditional and new nanotechnology methods for designing high performance hydrogen storage materials. The physical vapour deposition technologies allow the formation of metastable metal, alloy and chemical compounds with strictly controlled composition, microstructure and stoichiometry at low temperatures. The synthesis of MgH2, MgAl and Mg(AlH4)2 films has been conducted in two steps: (i) fabrication of thin films employing magnetron sputtering in Ar gas, and (ii) hydrogenati

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate pyroborates, M2B2O5, and orthoborates, M3(BO3)2, where M = Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, as high capacity and high voltage Li- and Mg-ion cathode materials. We explore the layered orthoborates (M3(BO3)2 which, to our knowledge, have not been previously considered as Li- or Mg-ion cathodes, perhaps due to the lack of Li analogues. Structural analysis shows that mixed metal orthoborates form a solid solution, with cation order driven by the presence of directional d orbitals. Electrochemical studies show that Mg can be removed from the structure and replaced with Li in

Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with evaluation of electrochemical corrosion characteristics of Mg-Zn systems prepared by powder metallurgy in SBF solution. The main aim of the thesis is to analyze the influence of chemical composition, achieved structure and parameters of the process of production of Mg-Zn systems on their electrochemical corrosion characteristics. The basic electrochemical properties of the prepared materials will be evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In order to clarify the mechanism of corrosion of materials, the immersion tests will be used, accompanied by meta

Madeddu, Silvia. "Alkaline-based extraction of Mg(OH)2 from magnesium silicate minerals for CO2 capture and storage." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2015. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/11429/.

Abstract:
Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2, has great potential for CO2 capture and storage (CCS) as it can capture CO2 in aqueous and solid systems. However, the utilisation of Mg(OH)2 for CCS has been hindered due to its rare occurrence in mineral deposits, and Mg silicate minerals, despite their slow kinetics of carbonation, have been the prime focus of the investigations for CO2 sequestration owing to their abundance in nature. In the present study, the extraction of Mg(OH)2 from Mg silicate minerals was investigated in NaOH aqueous and solid systems. The effective extraction of Mg(OH)2 from Mg silicate

Polychlorinated biphenyls are a ubiquitous environmental contaminant that can be found today throughout the world in soils and sediments, lakes and rivers, and flora and fauna. PCBs have percolated throughout the food chain, so that almost every human being has a detectable amount of the contaminant within their blood stream. Existing remediation methods include incineration, dredging and landfilling, and microbial degradation, but all of these methods have drawbacks that limit their effectiveness as treatment options. Recently, the use of zero-valent metals as a means of reductive dechlorinat

A study was carried out on the selection of processing condition that would yield Mg-Ti with most favourable hydrogenation properties. Processing routes under consideration were<br>mechanical milling under inert atmosphere, reactive milling i.e. milling under hydrogen atmosphere, ECAP (equal channel angular pressing) and thermal plasma synthesis. Structure resulting from each of these processing routes was characterized with respect to size reduction, coherently diffracting volume and the distribution of Ti catalyst. Mechanical milling yielded a particulate structure made up of large Mg agglom
