Abstract:
Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW) are a separatist Manosphere group (digital manifestation of the Men’s Liberation Movement) who focus on individualistic, self-empowering actions as opposed to traditional collective actions typical of Men’s Rights Activists and Incels. This study investigates how the ideology and rhetoric of MGTOW propagates and normalises misogynistic beliefs through online harassment, using a multi-phased content and thematic analysis of 10,280 tweets from three of the most active MGTOW users on Twitter. The findings document a link between the MGTOW ideology and toxic masculi

Abstract:
Backlash and hostility towards feminism are on the rise, as demonstrated by the growth of the ›manosphere‹: a loose network of men’s social media communities who argue that men are the real victims of sexism and feminists conceal these facts (Ging 2019). One manosphere group, »Men Going Their Own Way« (MGTOW), argue that heterosexual relationships are oppressive to men and consequently should be avoided. In this paper, I take a discourse-historical approach to critical discourse studies (Reisigl/Wodak 2016) to examine how MGTOW construct themselves as marginalised or oppressed. I identify four

From a Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Lakoff, 1992) starting point, this paper combines discourse analysis and corpus-linguistics methods informed with a textual approach drawn from cultural studies to demonstrate that members of r/MGTOW engage with plantation metaphorically to i) discursively construct a narrative of perceived masculine oppression and ii) underline in- and out-group divisions. Critical masculinity scholars have recently suggested that men recognizing their own vulnerability, as well as the vulnerability of others, could be a tool for feminist masculinity politics. These arguments are inspired by feminist debates, particularly the work of Judith Butler, who stresses the importance of recognizing a universally shared vulnerability to counter masculinist discourses of sovereignty. Butler’s argument has been criticized for making vulnerability an ethical issue, rather than highlighting the social and material processes that render some bodies more vulnerable than others

Premièrement, une quantification par sondage de la culture scientifique de ces hommes révèle des niveaux de connaissance et d'éducation scientifique dans le supérieur assez élevés.
