Abstract:
The discussion about media literacy today goes far beyond the traditional understanding of media competence. At the same time, very different meanings are attributed to the term. This book brings together 14 contributions on different dimensions of media literacy: in addition to definitions of terms, it addresses media and information literacy in dealing with journalistic content; it discusses media literacy in the contexts of social media, organisations and in specific roles; and sheds light on technological, social and aesthetic aspects of media literacy. These contributions build a bridge between the findings of media and communication research, educational science and the concept of media literacy. Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract:
The series ‘Health Research. Interdisciplinary Perspectives’ is published annually and focuses on topics relating to all aspects of health. Our aim is to take interdisciplinarity as an aspiration seriously and provide the latest findings on current issues from different disciplinary perspectives. This volume addresses the highly topical subject of the environment and health, considering the general relationship between humans and the environment as well as their specific interdependence and the consequences they have on each other. From the history of environmental medicine to the statutory framework or practical (supra-) regional phenomena that could have an effect on human health, this book takes into account a broad variety of aspects and disciplinary viewpoints. Abstract:
Friedrich Schiller, the grand master of the classical aesthetic of autonomy, was also a political thinker. In the 1790s, reading Immanuel Kant upset him, as did the French Revolution: abuse of power, political resistance, conspiracy and tyrannicide are just a few of the genuinely political themes that he repeatedly varies in literary terms. The articles in this volume consider the connection between the political, legal and ethical dimensions of Schiller's work. In addition to his 'big' dramas as well as his philosophical and historical writings, they examine the nexus of ethics, law and politics at the 'margins' of his work, in both his short works and his literary fragments. Abstract:
The intensively discussed term transformation refers to the comprehensive restructuring of processes and behaviour in order to address societal challenges posed by far-reaching changes in energy, transport, production and agricultural systems. Since such complex transformations are always accompanied by uncertainties about their effects and consequences, the contributions in this volume critically examine the opportunities and risks involved in these processes and discuss the possibilities and limits of technology assessment in the context of societal transformations. The volume brings together the academic contributions to the 8th international conference of the Technology Assessment Network, which took place in Karlsruhe from 7th to 8th November 2018. Abstract:
The answer to legal questions related to the end of life is subject to strong cultural and religious influences. Medical, philosophical and historical aspects must also be taken into account. Because of the close connection between law and culture, countries with different cultural and religious backgrounds were selected for a comparative study on end-of-life issues. In France, Germany and Switzerland with a continental legal system, in Great Britain with a common law system, in India and Japan, the different religions and cultures exert an important influence on the modernisation of the relevant legislation. The book deals with recent changes in the law and developments in the countries included in the study. With contributions by Florence Bellivier, Kartina A. Veverková, Kamila. Bernard Bolzano. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2022. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781666985207.

Full text
Abstract:
This book introduces the ethical, philosophical, and social legacy of the work of Bernard Bolzano (1781–1848), highlighting the theological element of Bolzano’s thought. Bolzano influenced several key thinkers (primarily Catholic priests) such as Vincenc Zahradník, Josef Michael Fesl, Anton Krombholz, František Schneider, and their pupils and successors. Zahradník co-founded an important professional Czech periodical and created much of modern Czech theological terminology. Anton Krombholz became an important representative of Austrian education after 1848, working at the Vienna Ministry of Education. Based on her previous comprehensive Czech monograph, the author now highlights other new manuscripts from Krombholz’s literary legacy. She underscores connections between Bolzano's legacy and the reform movement of the Czech Catholic clergy, emphasizing that Bolzano's ideas resonated in Czech Catholic modernism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Notwithstanding the tumultuous national development of Czechs and Germans in nineteenth-century Bohemia, Bolzano's conception of a peaceful coexistence between the two nationalities in Bohemia very favorably contributed to the preservation of the unity of the Catholic Church during such ethnically complex times. The author’s theological conception draws upon the works of Jan Milíc Lochman (1922–2004), who, in addition to writing on contemporary ecumenical themes, also dealt with the spiritual legacy of the Czech National Revival.

Saaler, Sven, and Christopher W. A. Szpilman. Pan-Asianism. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2011. https://doi.org/10.5040/9798881815684.

Full text
Abstract:
This first volume in a two-volume set provides the only comprehensive, Western-language history of Pan-Asianism through primary sources and commentaries. The book argues that Pan-Asianism, often—though unfairly—associated with the Yellow Peril, has been a powerful political and ideological force in modern Asia. It has shaped national identities and strongly influenced the development of international relations across Asia and the Pacific. Scholars have long recognized the importance of Pan-Asianism as an ideal of Asian solidarity, regional cooperation, and integration but also as an ideology that justified imperialist expansion and military aggression. Yet sustained research has been hampered by the difficulty of accessing primary sources. Thoroughly remedying this problem, this unique sourcebook provides a wealth of documents on Pan-Asianism from 1850 to 1920, many translated for the first time from Asian languages. All sources are accompanied by expert commentaries that provide essential background information. Providing an essential overview of Pan-Asianism as it developed throughout modern Asia, this collection will be an indispensable tool for scholars in history, political science, international relations, and sociology. Its accessible presentation makes it a valuable resource for non-specialists as well. Contributions by: Cemil Aydin, Yuan P. Abstract:
Terrorism is first and foremost viewed as a matter of security policy; however, its emergence, perception, effects, prevention and mitigation actually involve a multitude of societal sectors as well as academic fields, which also means that numerous academics, practitioners and decision-makers are in a position to contribute to analysing and countering terrorism. This handbook serves as the first German-language reference work on terrorism studies, capturing the complexity of this subject in its entirety. By using theories and perspectives from various academic disciplines, the handbook encourages scholars and students to apply their expertise to the field of terrorism studies and to emphasise interdisciplinary work. Abstract:
This book addresses the controversies surrounding smallholders’ opportunities for economic and social upgrading by joining global agricultural value chains (AVC). While international organizations encourage small farmers to become part of AVC, critics point out its risks. Unlike previous single case studies, researchers from three continents compared the influence of the characteristics of the crop (coffee, mango, rice), the end markets, and the national political economic contexts on the social and economic conditions for smallholders and agricultural workers. Their findings highlight the importance of collective action by smallholders and of a supportive state for economic and social upgrading. Abstract:
In recent decades, the cultural, social, medical and political handling of the end of life has been subject to fundamental change. Against the background of the rise of chronic diseases and longer dying processes, new problems have occurred, leading, amongst other things, to new conceptions of terminal care. In this volume, experts from various disciplines (ethnology, history, media and communication studies, medicine, nursing science and sociology) analyse the current debate on dying, death and bereavement and its relevance to society. The articles the book contains focus on key developments at the end of a life, such as current concepts in palliative and hospice care, individual prevention practices and public representations in the (digital) media landscape, and address their institutional and sociocultural contexts. In doing so, they challenge several truisms of previous research that arose due to close connections between social protest and scholarship. Abstract:
This handbook aims to provide an overview of knowledge about age and ageing in ‘Western’ societies at the beginning of the 21st century, which is intended to be equally suitable for research and practice. It focuses on relevant contributions from the social and behavioural sciences and their access to selected aspects of age and ageing. Its main topics can be described as quintessential core subjects, e.g. theories of ageing, socio-economic situation and inequalities, mental and physical health, social networks and social participation. These are supplemented by contributions on often marginalised topics and ‘emerging topics’ such as very old age, experiences of violence and delinquency, sexuality, and the spirituality and ethics of ageing. Finally, a series of topics relevant to everyday life and research practice (e.g. age and technology and data collection among the elderly) form a third central component of the book.
