Abstract:
Michael Scot was a central figure both for the transmission of Arabic philosophy to the Latin West and for the development of medieval science and astrology, yet much still remains unknown about his life and career. In part of a longer article dedicated to teasing out some of the strands of Michael Scot's influences and impact, Charles Burnett poses intriguing questions about the importance of his early sojourn in Toledo. He shows that Michael, along with Salio of Padua and Mark of Toledo, continued the translating activity begun in the twelfth century in Toledo, and he wonders whether Michael — like the twelfth-century translators Dominicus Gundissalinus, Gerard of Cremona, and John Hispanus — was closely associated with the cathedral of Toledo. Burnett hypothesizes that Toledo could have been the place where Michael first came across the works of Aristotle, Avicenna, and Averroes that he is credited with translating from the Arabic, and he notes that many of Michael's sources for his astrological treatise, the Liber introductorius (hereafter LI), were available in Toledo. Burnett suggests that by Michael's final departure from Spain to Italy, around 1220, he may have already made considerable headway in both his translating and astrological activities.

We apply a physical and historical analysis to a passage by the medieval scholar Michael Scot concerning multiple rainbows, a meteorological phenomenon whose existence has only been acknowledged in recent history. We survey various types of physical models to best decipher Scot’s description of four parallel rainbows as well as a linguistic analysis of Scot’s special etymology. The conclusions have implications on Scot’s whereabouts at the turn of the 13th century.

Abstract:
Michael Scot was a translator of Arabic treatises in the early thirteenth century who was credited by Roger Bacon with introducing parts of the Aristotelian corpus to the Latin West. He was associated with Emperor Frederick II and left a reputation as a wizard and necromancer that endured until the nineteenth century. In spite of this prominence, we know very few facts about his life. This lack of evidence did not deter nineteenth-century antiquarians from writing whole books about him, using conjecture to fill in what is otherwise lacking.

Abstract:
Necromancy, the practice of conjuring and controlling evil spirits, was a popular pursuit in the courts and cloisters of late medieval and early modern Europe. Books that gave details on how to conduct magical experiments circulated widely. Written pseudonymously under the name of the astrologer and translator Michael Scot (d. 1236), Latin MS 105 from the John Rylands Library, Manchester, is notable for the inclusion, at the beginning of the manuscript, of a corrupted, unreadable text that purports to be the Arabic original. Other recensions of the handbook, which generally travelled under the pseudo-Arabic title of Almuchabola Absegalim Alkakib Albaon, also stressed the experiments non-Western origins. Using Latin MS 105 as the main case study, this article aims to investigate the extent to which a magic books paratextual data conveyed a sense of authority to its contemporary audience.

Abstract:
One of the most mysterious and haunting of all medieval halakhic figures must certainly be the fourteenth-century sage Rabbi Jeruham b. Meshullam. During the sixteenth century, he was known as “Tamiri”—“the concealed one”—a moniker given to him by Joseph Karo's heavenly interlocutor, the Maggid. Years later, David Azulai, the eminent eighteenth-century rabbinic bibliographer, reported that “a number of Rabbis who had composed commentaries on his work … were summoned to the heavenly academy [i.e., they died prematurely] or their work was lost.” Even today, scholars who have never opened Jeruham's books are nevertheless aware of the “curse” hanging over the work of this medieval author.

Abstract:
AbstractThe activities of the rural blacksmiths of Cascia, operating beyond the environs of Dante's Florence, and their employers, an urban company of mercers, indicate that the relationship between the city and the countryside was not separated by any differences in cultural outlook. The ties were close rather than antagonistic not only because of an inherent sense of mobility shared by both parties, but also on account of the standard of craftsmanship demonstrated by the Cascian ironworkers. The skullcaps, or cervelliere, manufactured by these provincial artisans were of the highest quality and were prominent articles in the trade of the expanding European markets of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Worn primarily by infantrymen, they were essentially the product of increased populations, capitalizing on the new opportunities created by urban growth. Whether or not Michael Scot, the close associate of the German emperor Frederick II, invented the cervelliera in 1233 poses a distinct quandary. If the Aristotelian astrologer, alchemist, and physician was a mediator between philosopher and artisan, much more qualified information would be needed to substantiate the connection. Only the possibility, not the certainty, that Michael was integrally involved in the metallurgy of iron can be introduced within a thirteenth-century milieu where philosophical emphasis was on the close observation of everyday experience.

Abstract:
AbstractA short astrological treatise about the properties of the planets in the zodiac, called De motibus / iudiciis planetarum and attributed to Ptolemy (inc. Sub Saturno sunt hec signa Capricornus et Aquarius et sunt eius domus), appears from the thirteenth century onwards in two distinct traditions: in the encyclopedias of Bartholomew the Englishman and Arnold of Saxony, both written around 1230–1240, and in astronomical miscellanies copied in the fifteenth century either in or around Basel and in Northern Italy. These fifteenth-century manuscripts fall into two distinct groups of astronomical texts: the first is copied together with the De signis of Michael Scot, the second together with a part of the third book of Hyginus' De astronomia. The present article aims to describe the characteristics of the distinct textual filiations of De m. / iud. pl. and gives the first critical edition of the text.

Froidevaux, Vincent.

Full text
Abstract:
Polysulfide sealants are widely used in aviation because of their good resistance to low temperature and to fuels. Most of them are bycomponent (a polysulfide polymer and a crosslinking agent and, eventually a curing catalyst in one of them). These sealant formulations, crosslinked with MnO2, have a gel time of two days, with a full curing after 70 days. However, because of this short gel time, the curing time is too long. Thus, the objective of this thesis was to create a new type of sealant, monocomponent, with still a long gel time, ideally infinite, that could react on demand after stimulus, in order to have a short curing time. This concept is called SCOD concept (sealant cure on demand). These criteria require to block one of the three products, and this one should be unblocked on demand using an ease stimulus such as temperature. The system chosen as blocking principle is the Diels-Alder reaction of a Michaël acceptor. Indeed, this reaction is reversible and the cycloreversion allows to unprotect the reactive double bond. After the unblocking reaction, the Michaël acceptor may react with the polysulfide. A primary study, on Michael acceptors, allowed to determine that maleimide function, in the presence of triethylamine, gives the best kinetics for reaction with polysulfide's thiol. A second study, this time on the Diels-Alder and retroDiels-Alder reaction, proved the feasibility of the project and allowed to select furan derivatives as blocking agents. Then, aliphatic polymaleimides hardeners were synthesized using Huntsman's Jeffamine and were blocked with the acetate furfuryl, so as to be used for creating SCOD materials. The gel time obtained with blocked hardener was 7 days at room temperature and after heating for 17 hours, a material was obtained; the SCOD concept has been demonstrated. The study was, then, extrapolated to Hutchinson's research and development department on bigger quantities to do some basic formulation. In addition, the sealant's characteristics have been determined and have shown very interesting results. Unblocking time was improved after adding tetrafunctional thiols (co-agent) and one another catalyst (DBU). The unblocking time was too long and the blocking agent, once released into the formulation, formed porosities into the sealant and, because of it, damaged the properties of the sealant. A latter part was done to improve the SCOD concept. Two new generations of hardener, aromatic this time, and blocking agent, acting as a non-volatile plasticizer, were created and tested in laboratory. These have presented very good preliminary results. Indeed, the unblocking time is much shorter and the unblocking agent is less volatile at high temperature compare to acetate furfuryl. The scaling up to pilot level is under way (end of 2014)

Abstract:
The treatise of Disputatio Scoti is an additional example of an erudite alchemy in close conformity with the Scholastic philosophy. To better understand this text, we must examine the standing of alchemy within Western medieval society and present a coherent and detailed overview of this issue (existing works on this theme are often too synthetic or inconsistent). My study therefore focuses on the links between alchemy and the Scholastic philosophy as viewed by scholars and philosophers. After presenting the historical and economic context in which the questions for producing gold artificially and discovering a long-life elixir arose, I highlight the known connections between the lay and ecclesiastic princes and alchemy. The third part of my thesis deals with a comment and a critical edition of the Disputatio, wrongly ascribed to Michel Scot

Muller, Cornelis Hermanus. "Coercive agrarian work in South Africa, 1948 - 1965 : 'farm labour scandals'?" Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/30300.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation puts into historical context allegations of farm labour abuse during the period 1948 to 1960 on the eastern Transvaal Highveld. It not only gives an exposition of these events, but importantly analyses these allegations of abuse in the context of the South African government’s intervention into farm labour for this period. The dissertation, however, first gives an overview of the government’s policies of regulating and providing farmers with black labour in the period 1910 to 1948. It deals specifically with the dubious measures introduced and coercive actions taken by the National Party government after 1948 to provide farmers with “cheap and plentiful labour”. The reactions to the accusations of abuse by the South African government, the farmers, the conservative, liberal and leftist press, and other independent bodies, such as the churches, Black Sash and the South African Institute of Race Relations, are also explored. The reaction of the African National Congress and the Potato Boycott launched in 1959 by this organisation in response to the mistreatment of farm labourers, also receives specific attention. It concludes with a discussion of how the farm labour scandals and the reaction during the 1950s and more specifically the Potato Boycott of 1959 are still relevant today by considering the contested nature of the commemoration of this event in 2009 AFRIKAANS : Hierdie verhandeling plaas bewerings van die misbruik van plaasarbeid gedurende die periode 1948 tot 1960 op die oostelike Transvaalse Hoëveld in historiese konteks.

Abstract:
The PhD is concerned with the intellectual life at the court of Frederick II, emperor and king of Sicily. A big part of it is dedicated to inedited works linked to this cultural milieu, important for the history of sciences and letters of the thirteenth century Europe : Michael Scot's Liber introductorius, a huge astrological and cosmological summa (1230 ca. ), Peter of Eboli's poem "Baths of Pozzuoli", an illustrated Liber astrologiae by Zotorus etc. In the Annexes, an edition of these treatises is proposed. The combination of methods of the history of art and of the history of science has been imposed by the subject itself ; the scientific lore at the Frederick's court, with its research for new approaches to the empirical reality, is parallel to reach artistic activity, with its strong predilection for naturalistic forms

Abstract:
Over the course of the last few years, a new movement has taken the American political system by storm, the Tea Party. The movement has not only captivated our media but also the minds of ordinary Americans and political elites. According to popular consensus and academic opinion, the Tea Party is comprised of a group of conservative-leaning Republicans who want a smaller government and a lesser tax burden. This is what we think of the Tea Party, but is it true? It is perceived that Tea Party members differ significantly from their Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives, but do they? Do they truly represent the Tea Party philosophy and agenda? By creating an original data set on the Republican members of the United States House of Representatives, and examining variables such as the political lean, economic and employment make-up of a member's district, their endorsements and incumbency, as well as high priority legislative votes from the 112th Congress, I will be able to investigate the characteristics and tendencies of Tea Party Caucus members. Once one looks at the 242 member House Republican Caucus and further examines the sixty members of the Tea Party Caucus, the data shows that Tea Party Caucus members largely originate from safe Republican districts and have served in previous congressional terms. Analysis shows that Tea Party Caucus members do vary significantly from their House Republican colleagues when examining their districts, but do not vary as considerably when examining their voting patterns.

Abstract:
In February 1980, Ridley Scott signed on to direct a film based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? During development of the project the film became Blade Runner, a highly influential science fiction film set in a dystopian Los Angeles of the near future. The production was highly inventive and the narrative experimental. Scott pushed the cast and crew hard because of the limited amount of time he had to put his vision on film. The producers were constantly hounding him over what they considered excesses and lack of respect for the schedule, actually firing him and his producer Michael Deeley at one point, only to rehire them days later, although they constantly threatened to take the film over. Narration included for clarity slowed the film down and was eventually removed after the initial release. Blade Runner is a landmark film in visual effects and for its sophisticated narrative and complex characters.
