Abstract: This essay examines the Cold War cultural politics of Asian inclusion through the Cold War novels of the popular mid-twentieth-century American writer James A. Michener. An analysis of his Korean War novel, The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1953), and his historical novel, Hawaii (1959), draws out the transnational dimension of his representation of Asian inclusion and the constitutive role that US militarism plays in this. Michener’s novels show a cultural vision of an American way of life for Asians built from the sites of combat and war ruins. By tracing what it calls a racial pedagogy of a

Abstract In the novel Space by James Michener, the fictional Apollo astronauts encounter a situation that fortunately did not occur during the real program [1]. In the book, the astronauts are on the surface of the Moon when the radiation from a solar ?are arrives. They receive fatal doses. The inspiration for this scenario may have been the solar storm of August 4, 1972, which over half a day delivered a radiation dose that could have caused radiation sickness or death had it reached the crew while they were out on the lunar surface or in the thinly shielded lunar module [2]. The chapter begins with an analysis of “The Inherited Wish,” his introduction to William F. Nolan’s Ray Bradbury Companion. The phrase was originally Sir Lawrence Olivier’s way of explaining his inherent love of his acting life, and Bradbury adapted it to explain his own inherent love of his writer’s life. The chapter continues to track Bradbury’s abiding resistance to the intellectual establishment’s occasional attacks on science fiction’s rise into the literary mainstream. Where lies the future of the shortgrass steppe? In prior chapters we have described the remarkable resilience of the shortgrass steppe ecosystem and its organisms to past drought and grazing, and their sensitivity to other types of change. Emerging from this analysis is the idea of vulnerability to two main forces: future changes in precipitation or water availability, and direct human impacts. What are the likely changes in the shortgrass steppe during the next several decades? Which of the changes are most likely to affect major responses in the plants, animals, and ecosystem services of the

The central grassland region of North America (Fig. 1.1) is the largest contiguous grassland environment on earth. Prior to European settlement, it was a vast, treeless area characterized by dense head-high grasses in the wet eastern portion, and very short sparse grasses in the dry west. As settlers swept across the area, they replaced native grasslands with croplands, most intensively in the east, and less so in the west (Fig. 1.2). The most drought-prone and least productive areas have survived as native grasslands, and the shortgrass steppe occupies the warmest, driest, least productive lo
