Abstract:
The rapid evolution of the microcomputer has changed the software needs of today's naval architects. The Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at The University of Michigan has been a leader in the application of computers in ship design education. The computer environment readily available to the department's students has changed dramatically in the past few years with the evolution of the Computer-Aided Marine Design Laboratory within the department and the creation of the Computer Aided Engineering Network (CAEN) within the College of Engineering. The microcomputer facilities available to the students are briefly described. To fully integrate this capability into the department's curriculum, a coordinated suite of computer-aided ship design software has been developed for use on the Macintosh and IBM-PC/XT/AT microcomputers provided for the students. To support the use of this and other software on a wide range of computers, a portable, device-independent computer graphics subprogram package M-PLOT has been developed. The educational philosophy behind this design software and its scope, capabilities, and use in ship design education are described. Examples of the use of selected programs are presented to illustrate these capabilities. Plans for further work are outlined. The effort is well toward the goal of a complete, microcomputer-based ship design software environment.

Abstract:
The technology is based on a semiconductor CdZnTe-portable (almost the size of a mobile phone) gamma-ray spectrometer with high resolution, which provides high efficiency of rapid identification of radionuclides and assessment of radiation dose from low to moderately high levels. The CdZnTe gamma-ray spectrometer is a highly efficient device based on the use of CdZnTe (CZT) semiconductor detectors operating at room temperature with very low power consumption, a digital multichannel analyzer, and a microcomputer. CdZnTe-portable spectrometer is a self-contained device and consists of three modules - a detector module, a multichannel analyzer, and a microcomputer. The detector module contains a high-quality CdZnTe detector, a preamplifier, and a high voltage power supply for the detector. There are detector modules with different volumes of the CZT detector from 5 mm3 to 1600 mm3. It is possible to use a multi-detector system. The analyzer module contains an amplifier, a digital signal processor, a low voltage power supply, and a computer interface. The microcomputer software interacts with the multichannel analyzer, analyzes gamma spectra, and provides the accumulation of time profiles of the dose of gamma radiation, communication with other information systems. Spectrometric measurements in real-time make it possible to use "electronic collimation" technologies to build a map of the radiation field and localize sources of ionizing radiation, with the subsequent certification of identified sources, creation of an effective radiation monitoring system with the functions of certification of ionizing sources radiation. The corresponding software allows you to solve the following tasks – building a three-dimensional map of the fields of ionizing radiation of various degrees of spatial detailing, taking into account the radiation energy, localization, and certification of gamma radiation sources. The special laboratory kit is based on μSPEC microspectrometers. A LattePanda single board computer is used to control the operation of spectrometers, collect and analyze data. LattePanda – A Windows 10 Computer with integrated Arduino. This explains the choice of LattePanda. Windows 10 application allows you to use the WinSPEC software to control the multichannel analyzer operation supplied with the spectrometer. The built-in Arduino allows you to remote control the movement of the radiation source during laboratory experiment. Both the traditional problems of calibrating spectrometers (energy calibration and efficiency curves), including those for various source geometries, processing the measured spectra using standard programs, calculating the activity of sources, and the problem of creating a spectra processing program and a spectrometer control program are considered. The values of the minimum detectable activity are given.

Abstract:
This study proposes a design for unmanned chemical factories and implementation based on ultra-low-cost Internet of Things technology, to combat the impact of COVID-19 on industrial factories. A safety and private blockchain network architecture was established, including a three-layer network structure comprising edge, fog, and cloud calculators. Edge computing uses a programmable logic controller and a single-chip microcomputer to transmit and control the motion path of a four-axis robotic arm motor. The fog computing architecture is implemented using Python software. The structure is integrated and applied using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative controller (FOPID). In addition, edge computing and fog computing signals are transmitted through the blockchain, and can be directly uploaded to the cloud computing controller for signal integration. The integrated application of the production line sensor and image recognition based on the network layer was addressed. We verified the image recognition of the CNN and the robot motor signal control of the FOPID. This study proposes that a CNN + FOPID method can improve the efficiency of the factory by more than 50% compared with traditional manual operators. The low-cost, high-efficiency equipment of the new method has substantial contribution and application potential.

Abstract:
The use of the notorious synthetic dye, rhodamine B, in food and beverage products has been widely reported. This application urges the need to develop an analytical method that can provide reliable rhodamine B data with an easy operational technique. Therefore, this research is aimed to develop an Arduino Uno-based TCS3200 color sensor and study its application to determine rhodamine B levels in syrup. The design of the analytical instrument included TCS3200, an Arduino Uno microcomputer, an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) software, a black box container, and a 24 × 2 matrix display screen, where samples were prepared via absorption using wool thread. With a linear range of 1–20 mg/L, our proposed colorimetric sensor had recoveries of 96.25–110.3%, which was better compared to that was obtained from the UV-vis (81.8–100.6%) method. The detection and quantification limits of the sensor were 2.766 and 8.383 mg/L, respectively. The syrup samples used in this study were purchased from the local stores in Banda Aceh. Based on the proposed TCS3200 color sensor, the highest rhodamine B concentration from the syrup sample was 16.74 mg/L. The t-test analysis in this study revealed that the Rhodamine B levels quantified using the newly developed TCS3200 color sensor were not statistically or significantly different from the UV-Vis spectrophotometer method.

Abstract:
In the first part of this thesis, we present a new development platform especially tailored to Bioinformatics research and software development called Bias (Bioinformatics Integrated Application Software) designed to provide the tools necessary for carrying out integrative Bioinformatics research. Bias follows an object-relational strategy for providing persistent objects, allows third-party tools to be easily incorporated within the system, and it supports standards and data-exchange protocols common to Bioinformatics. The second part of this thesis is on the design and implementation of modules and libraries within Bias related to transcription factors. We present a module in Bias that focuses on discovering competitive relationships between mouse and yeast transcription factors. By competitive relationships we mean the competitive binding of two transcription factors for a given binding site. We also present a method that divides a transcription factor's set of binding sites into two or more different sets when constructing PSSMs.

Abstract:
Program Comprehension is a key factor in providing effective software maintenance and enabling successful evolution of software systems. The objective of this research is to provide a framework and mechanism to facilitate the understanding of large software systems. There exist a number of theories and models of Program Comprehension where each favours a different approach to comprehension. It is evident that there is no real consensus on how maintainers understand software systems. The disparities in the comprehension strategies are largely dependent on the personal and circumstantial factors. Factors such as the level of technical competence of the maintainers, the size and complexity of the piece of software, and the types and goals of the maintenance activities can influence the process of comprehension. This research proposes an alternative approach to Program Comprehension. It acknowledges that the process of comprehension is opportunistic, and that the current comprehension theories are inadequate in addressing this. There is a need for a more flexible approach towards comprehension, and the Integrated Approach proposed in this thesis provides a way for the utilisation of the various comprehension theories under a single environment. It recognises that any one of the comprehension theories may become active during comprehension. Under the Integrated Approach, maintainers have the option of selecting and executing the various comprehension strategies as they see fit. The Integrated Approach to comprehension is based on a matrix of Program Relationships between Program Elements of a programming language. In this thesis, these Program Relationships are derived for the C programming language constructs. This work also involves the investigation of the roles of both textual and graphical representations during the comprehension process. Both representations are commonly used to alleviate the problem of information overloading when maintainers trying to understand and maintain a software system. The Integrated Approach is realised in a tool named PUI (program understanding implements) which provides an environment enabling the utilisation of various comprehension theories.

Delivering quality user experience is the most critical goal of any product development and marketing team in any organization. With the advancement of technologies in the fields of data science and data computation, it is now possible to know users more efficiently and create solutions that satisfy their needs to the fullest. In this thesis, I explore how the digital e-commerce and online content provider companies are utilizing many different personalization methods which are helpful in increasing the rate of successful transactions, however, a similar trend is not visible in SaaS applications. Cloud computation has made software both easily accessible and replaceable, putting a lot of stress on both the value of the product as well as the user experience. Many software companies still follow the traditional approach of creating static personas for product design and marketing purposes and create one fits all solution. Machine/application data, which is continuously generated by the software applications, tracking each and every user activity, can be extremely useful in understanding the user behavior and thus giving companies the ability to create more personalized and adaptive solutions. I explore data generated about a pedagogical website at MIT which is used to support instruction in computation-open to students from all the departments. I applied machine learning algorithms to show that there are different clusters/classes of students in a class. By tracking student activity and performance on class website, it can be predicted which class they belong to. This information can be used to develop customized solutions for all the students.

Abstract:
AbstractImagine that you are a product manager at a software company. When users disclose some information to your product, they can use all the great features you and your team have integrated into the software. Utilizing these features is essential for the success of your product: it makes users satisfied and encourages others to use the software as well. Furthermore, the user and usage data can be used to improve the product and help implementing new features over time. However, since your product collects users’ data, you are worried about privacy-related issues. What causes users’ privacy concerns, and what are the potential consequences of those concerns? The APCO (Antecedents → Privacy Concerns → Outcomes) and enhanced APCO models provide a summary of the current scientific findings related to these questions and present them in a conceptual model. The APCO framework will help practitioners and scholars to bring different privacy-related aspects of a product to their attention and suggests how these aspects can interrelate. Throughout this chapter, we will consider a use case scenario of a fitness tracker application and discuss how APCO applies to this scenario.

Compared to the structure of a centralized system, a distribuited structure gives the following advantages: functional flexibility, maintainability, software rangeability and friendly interface with the operator. Based on several years of field experience. Nuovo Pignone has developed an on-line diagnostic system for turbomachines made up of integrated hardware and software modules designed for optimum management of information coming from turbomachines. The system controls the mechanical and thermodynamic behaviour of the machines, thus providing an effective support to their operation and maintenance. This results in an increased availability lower maintainance costs and improved plant efficiency. A mathematical model, based on Gas Path Analysis (G.P.A.) methodology, has been implemented in the system and has already been successfully tested in several industrial applications, quite similar to Cortemaggiore plant. The experience gained in the Cortemaggiore gas compression station indicates that the main problem arises in interpretation of the data coming from the system. The Diagnostic System gives plenty of data, suitably arranged, to support the maintenance staff in their duties. Nevertheless is the operator who had to interpretate data, correlate thermodynamic information with mechanical data and decide on the best course of action. Taking into account that many plants are not continuously attended by highly experienced technicians in this domain, Nuovo Pignone has developed an Expert System, integrated with the Diagnostic Packages, that incorporates all the information acquired from skilled field engineers during years of activities.

Abstract:
This report introduces the first release of CORPS-STIF (Concrete Observations Repository and Predictive Software – Structural and Thermodynamical Integrated Framework). CORPS-STIF is envisioned to be used as a tool to optimize material constituents and geometries of mass concrete placements specifically for ultra-high performance concretes (UHPCs). An observations repository (OR) containing results of 649 mechanical property tests and 10 thermodynamical tests were recorded to be used as inputs for current and future releases. A thermodynamical integrated framework (TIF) was developed where the heat transfer coefficient was a function of temperature and determined at each time step. A structural integrated framework (SIF) modeled strength development in cylinders that underwent isothermal curing. CORPS-STIF represents a step toward understanding and predicting strength gain of UHPC for full-scale structures and specifically in mass concrete.

Lasko, Kristofer, and Sean Griffin. Monitoring Ecological Restoration with Imagery Tools (MERIT) : Python-based decision support tools integrated into ArcGIS for satellite and UAS image processing, analysis, and classification. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/40262.

Full text
Abstract:
Monitoring the impacts of ecosystem restoration strategies requires both short-term and long-term land surface monitoring. The combined use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and satellite imagery enable effective landscape and natural resource management. However, processing, analyzing, and creating derivative imagery products can be time consuming, manually intensive, and cost prohibitive. In order to provide fast, accurate, and standardized UAS and satellite imagery processing, we have developed a suite of easy-to-use tools integrated into the graphical user interface (GUI) of ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro as well as open-source solutions using NodeOpenDroneMap. We built the Monitoring Ecological Restoration with Imagery Tools (MERIT) using Python and leveraging third-party libraries and open-source software capabilities typically unavailable within ArcGIS. MERIT will save US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) districts significant time in data acquisition, processing, and analysis by allowing a user to move from image acquisition and preprocessing to a final output for decision-making with one application. Although we designed MERIT for use in wetlands research, many tools have regional or global relevancy for a variety of environmental monitoring initiatives.

Full text
Abstract:
Riprap rock and aggregates are extensively used in structural, transportation, geotechnical, and hydraulic engineering applications. Field determination of morphological properties of aggregates such as size and shape can greatly facilitate the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) process for proper aggregate material selection and engineering use. Many aggregate imaging approaches have been developed to characterize the size and morphology of individual aggregates by computer vision. However, 3D field characterization of aggregate particle morphology is challenging both during the quarry production process and at construction sites, particularly for aggregates in stockpile form. This research study presents a 3D reconstruction-segmentation-completion approach based on deep learning techniques by combining three developed research components: field 3D reconstruction procedures, 3D stockpile instance segmentation, and 3D shape completion. The approach was designed to reconstruct aggregate stockpiles from multi-view images, segment the stockpile into individual instances, and predict the unseen side of each instance (particle) based on the partial visible shapes. Based on the dataset constructed from individual aggregate models, a state-of-the-art 3D instance segmentation network and a 3D shape completion network were implemented and trained, respectively. The application of the integrated approach was demonstrated on re-engineered stockpiles and field stockpiles. The validation of results using ground-truth measurements showed satisfactory algorithm performance in capturing and predicting the unseen sides of aggregates. The algorithms are integrated into a software application with a user-friendly graphical user interface. Based on the findings of this study, this stockpile aggregate analysis approach is envisioned to provide efficient field evaluation of aggregate stockpiles by offering convenient and reliable solutions for on-site QA/QC tasks of riprap rock and aggregate stockpiles.
